[Q] Overclocking? - Epic 4G General

How does overclocking "happen"? Is it just like a file that says "you can do 1200 now, so go ahead" or are they specific cpu instructions needed to over clock. I was just wondering because every gingerbread build for the epic cant over clock

They need the source kernal. Then, the commands can be found and adjusted, to put it over-simply.

Ok, I wasnt sure how simple it was. I knew they needed source, I just didnt know how overclocking was done at a kernel level. Or if it was at a kernel level.

What came first? The kernel or the microprocessor... lol
That's what I call a paradox

The microprocessor with a kernel in mind...

paradoxes!

Should we be able to overclock even more with gingerbread or is 1.4mhz pretty much the safe limit? (even though I can still remember one of the Eclair kernels having a 1.6mhz speed setting)

1.6 was absolutely fake. I run 1.4 all day but I have 1.45 and 1.48 test kernels and I can't run them at all. 1.4 seems to be it even though a couple of phones may be able to handle it.

Think of the rom as the body of a car with the ability to choose the trim level to your comfort. The kernel meanwhile would be the engine with the option to add and subtract cams, headers, etc to for your needs. The higher the performance the worse off you gas/battery milage will be. Undervolting it would be like getting a custom tune that optimizes mixture levels (think air/fuel) from from idle to top end.

Well that's probably it... I have had the phone since release but have been afraid to do anything until a couple weeks ago.
I just installed my first rom - Redemptive Revolution 1.8 (love it BTW) but it came with the newest HTC kernel, so that's what I am using. I dont even have SetCPU on my phone. You think the sub 1200 is about right for not having it?

The app is called "Quadrant" and you can find it in the android market. XD Theirs also "Linpack" that you can use to test out Mega Flops.
got these scores had to redo test becuase drocap didnt capture screen like i wanted as you can see.. had to use shootme for second test and score droped a little. Im on ROM The new guy v5 with the blue theme v2. with king kernal bfs #5..love the ROM
**edit
BTW i was reading above about app killing(which i usally do) and both these test were done w/o killing apps and such went straight to testing..

This is 100% legit & I currently hold the highest score I've ever seen. The system im running is in my sig & has no set cpu or overclocking enabled. It has parts of the operating system stored in the RAM which has much faster I/O than NAND.
quadrant honestly doesn't mean much

But how does the Scorpion score on 2.3?
This is excellent news, means the Dalvik Jit compiler is finally optimized to give the Hummingbird a performance boost.
But, what if this excitment is pre-mature? I want to see the nexus ONE(scorpion phone) running 2.3, what if 2.3 on a scorpion boosts their performance even more than it already did on 2.2!
Lets compare 2.3 vibrant to 2.3 scorpion, then we will know!

Also Quadrant doesn't test MFLOPS... linpack does
The purpose of my post to show the galaxy S phones take advantage of JIT just like the NS..even though we pretty much knew this
The scorpion CPU is nothing more than a snapdragon with updated adreno GPU will pretty much have same linpack score as N1 snapdragon

No, this is supercurio's rom. He's simply showing the performance results of it. There is no fully functional Gingerbread rom for SGS phones yet. However, if supercurio continues at this pace, it may not be much longer

Faux's OC Kernel 0.19 UV Settings

I just wanted to start a thread where people can post their working UV settings for faux's newest kernel. I'm at -25 for everything and -75 for 216MHz, but I know I can go lower. What do you guys have?
One thing to bare in mind was people list UV values in this thread is that not all phones are created equal. Just because someone can get down to certain settings doesn't mean your phone can as well.
Also, make sure you don't check off "set at boot" in the undervolting section of setCPU (or whatever app you are using) until you know that the settings are safe.

Yeh I'm thinking these settings are not actually being applied. From what I understand u can set the undervolting to whatever u want. Doesn't mean it will take and stick and actually work. Someone correct me if I'm wrong and this particular kernel allows more than a 100mv jump between.
