Got a new guitar yesterday so we were sitting around outside testing it out. Had the tablet on a table next to a nearly-full can of Mountain Dew. When someone sat down, apparently the tablet was pushed into the can which knocked it over right on top of the tablet, spilling Dew all over it.
Wiped it off, and noticed it turned itself off. Wouldn't turn back on. Set it in front of a fan for a couple hours standing up, tried it again and it turned on, however there appears to be liquid between the LCD and the piece covering the screen.
Glad it still works, but hoping someone will have a disassembly guide soon so I can (gently) clean the internals...
I hope you're aware that the 3 main ingredients in Mountain Dew are sulfuric acid, urine & caffeine. That can do some nasty damage.

You're not suppose to turn a device on after getting wet. I put it on uncooked rice overnight to take the moisture out and then turn it on but glad to hear your tab still works.

I got my warranty through SquareTrade. They have an option to choose a higher plan which covers spills & screen damage. You have to purchase the warranty within 30 days of your purchase date. It was cheaper than the plan from BestBuy, & covers more. Doesn't cover theft though.

does square trade provide international warranties?
If not does any one know who does?
This wasn't purchased so I couldn't really get a warranty on it. It was a freebie from Google/Samsung at IO.
I know better than to turn it on when it's wet, but it was already on when it got liquid spilled on it, so didn't see how it could cause more damage trying to turn it on.

I did the same thing. Its 100$ for 2 years - it was 54.99 for the warranty and 45.00 for the spills and accidental damage. I think its a great deal especially that there is no deductible.

This works well, when all you are dealing with is water, or some other liquid that is not full of chemicals and sugars..
While the rice acts as a desiccant, it will draw out the moisture, but leave behind crystallized sugars and other sticky goodness.
Unfortunately, there is no good solution to cleaning out soda from things.. other then to do the best job you can, and live with whatever is left over.
Sorry to be a nag, but stupid is as stupid does. Just cuz u got it for free doesn't mean you should treat it as such.
Either way yahoo recently had an article testing the rice theory with 3 cellphones, only one of them ever turned back on so that is bunk.
I would be surprised if Ifixit.com hasn't done a teardown yet

I'm neither stupid nor do I treat my electronics poorly, free or not.
I'm glad you've never had an accident, but pull your all-mighty head out your ass. Stuff happens. I'm have been a geek for a long, long time. Never have I spilled a drink on any of my electronics until last night. You can see I've been on these forums for quite a long time, way longer than Android has been around.
And yes, the rice thing is useless.
OP, go to squaretrade.com and purchase a warranty right now. If you search around, you can find some 10-30% off codes. But, you'll be covered for everything including spills and drops. Wait a month and send it in. I believe there is no deductible, too.
EDIT: After typing that, I just remembered yours is an IO. Call them up and see if they can offer you something. Their customer service is exceptional. I plan to get a warranty of the kal-el version of this when it releases.

Square trade is awesome. They have, imo, the best warranty solutions anywhere. Dont ever buy store brand warranties as there are so many limitations.
The Square trade ones are not only cheaper, but cover more. I highly recommend it.

dropped my phone from like 3 feet and this is what happened. luckily there is a place here in sac that can replace the glass for $100. i called in and they have the part. hopefully its legit.
saw the same thing happen last night. Kid told me today that sprint insurance doesn't cover screens anymore. Said they won't even look at an EVO if the screen is cracked. Is that true?
The Sprint store here doesn't cover glass screens. Best Buy has their insurance policy and they will cover cracked screens though. My friend just dropped his Evo and it cracked the screen, when he had someone repair it they accidentally punctured the LCD with a piece of the broken glass. He now has a fairly dead Evo, but the guy is willing to replace the parts next week when he gets them in.
It honestly is very easy to repair the digitizer and the LCD screen (Depending on which one you need).
I knew fairly nothing about the phone, I did a little research and bought the "Type 1" LCD screen for the HTC Evo. The connector was too small so I did more searching, I eventually found the right screen at GlobalPartsDirect. (Search google).
It has the Wide Connector that you'll need if you have one of the HDW004/3. I personally would open up the back of the phone and check the connector myself, If i were you.
It's an easy fix, only question, do you have the money to buy two from globalpartsdirect (They only ship in multiples). Then you're golden, plus, you'll have an extra LCD screen to repair your phone if it happens again.

Damn I dropped mine off my lap on concrete from sitting in a car, glass down and not one crack or mark. Got super lucky.

TEP no longer covers cracks over an inch in length. A small crack can get replaced because it is covered under normal wear.

No, they won't even look at it. I was told exactly that by the rep of the repair center I went to. "We are not allowed to even touch the phone if the glass is cracked." They will not fix it. I even offered to buy the parts myself and pay for the labor, and that is when I was told they can't even look/touch it.

Well, it's total equipment protection in the same sense that a bumper-to-bumper warranty covers your car. If your car's engine takes a crap on you and your car is under warranty, they will fix it. However, if there is a rock on the road and you go over it with your car and crack the oil pan, all the oil leaks out and then your engine gets seized, you wouldn't really take it to the dealer for a warranty repair, would you?
In that case, you would call your car insurance company which is where Asurion comes in.
Gravity is not Sprint's fault. However, I think they should fix the phone if you are willing to pay for it instead of having to find some 3rd party electronics repair shop to do it. If they did, then maybe people wouldn't be committing insurance fraud like DirtyShroomz mentioned.
See, if I drop my phone now again and I call Asurion, they will replace it and then refuse to give me coverage until a year passes by, since you're only allowed two claims per year. If Sprint would have fixed my phone for $100, I would have given them the $100 instead of Asurion and saved the claim for the day I lose it or damage it beyond repair. I think Sprint is actually losing revenue by turning away repair jobs from phones that fall under the "physical damage" category.
Correct, Sprint's coverage has never been accidental. They used to occasionally cover drops, but spills and water damage have always been out of the question. It's the reason I buy my phones at Best Buy. I don't have to wait for a rebate, and I can get 100% accidental (full submersion included) protection on my phone, with a loaner phone if it needs to be sent out. It's 10 bucks a month, but compared to a new phone it's not bad.
That being said, I don't have it on my Evo as I know how to change out LCD panels now.
Assurion covers it.
I called in Friday about a broken screen(the entire piece of glass was shattered) and I got my brand spankin new Evo on Monday
That screen replacement deal was good while it lasted. Had my TP2 screen replaced under TEP before selling ur on here. Well, actually they ordered me a whole other phone, as they had no screens in stock. Too bad they are so whack about it now.
I've seen official policy posted before. It's anything over an inch is not supposed to be repaired. But what the hell is the difference? 1" vs shattered screen, you still replace the same pieces right?

I have a broken screen as well. Anyone knows where I can send it in for repairs? I am not that good with small parts so I cannot repair it myself.
I was curious if anyone can tell me where the moisture indicators are on the Epic, and what they look like in regular state and tripped state. I only see a sticker on my battery (which I think is one) but it is completely white.
My phone isn't acting right, and it is quite a drive for me to the service center. I don't want to waste my time if they aren't going to warranty it. I didn't get it wet or anything, but I have heard of so many stories where due to the Florida humidity they falsely activate.

I don't think that is a very good place for one. WAY too exposed to humidity. Not only that, but it sucks if my headset plug has moisture and I plug it in. INSTANT trip.

I believe not tripped it'll have blue markings on it, and tripped is completely white, but...
At our store we don't go by the sticker, it's more of a flag than anything else. What we're really looking for are burns and corrosion.
If you want, it's really easy to take off the back of your epic. Just remove battery and cover, unscrew the small phillips screws in the back, and wedge something small and plastic around the seam between the back plate and the chrome trim. You just have to keep a lookout for the buttons falling so you don't lose them.
What you would be looking for is discoloration on any of the metal.
But if you don't feel that adventurous, here's a little piece of advice: you can start a service repair ticket online before you head to the store. They'll be a little a more lenient when you get there and if there's only a tiny amount of corrosion, they'll probably help you out; they don't want their customer satisfaction score to take a hit if they tell you to go pound sand and you already have a ticket created.

ugh my battery sticker is completely white. The thing is that I have submerged two phones before, and didn't even go to the store. I knew the phone was fried and called asurian (sp?). This one is TOTALLY legit not a water problem and I am going to REALLY be upset if they give me a hard time over it.
I don't feel like taking the phone apart, and I checked the website, but couldn't find where to open a repair ticket. Are you simply just talking about clicking the "make an appointment" link at my local branch?
If you are talking about the make an appointment link, it isn't working for my local Sprint Repair center (I assume because they are not a corporate store).
SIGH. I am seriously going to be upset if they try playing the water gimmick with me.
Well, I've had plenty of phones that had some water damage come in but aren't completely inoperable, just little quirks that hard resets and reflashing don't solve. You'd be surprised what a tiny amount of water can do.
So are you saying your store is one of those 3rd party authorized retailers? I didn't know they did repairs...
There's always the possibility there isn't any water damage lol

Yeah, this one does repairs. They are exclusively a Sprint store, just not corporate, but they do repairs. Have brought my wifes phone in there before.
You are right, it may not be water, but I use my phone every day at the gym + Florida moisture. I am concerned that these stupid sensors may be too sensitive and I may be dinged for something that I shouldn't.
I guess we will see tomorrow.

ASC's do repairs, which is probably what the store close to you is. They're graded based off of surveys generated on tickets too. What you need to do is call customer support (*2), they'll create a ticket on your device and direct you to the store where the ASC will pull up that ticket and probably get graded.
Also, there's no moisture stickers that I know of besides the mentioned, as was said before, they won't look at those anyway. It's corrosion that's the killer.
So just to follow-up, I pulled into the parking lot, and realized that I totally forgot to call customer service and create a ticket. I was pissed off at myself, but drove all the way out there so I figured I had to try it.
Got there and he tried updating my PRL/Profile, but as I got into the conversation with him, he realized that I did a great deal of troubleshooting, and didn't give it a second look. He created the ticket, and the phone will be in tomorrow.
So basically all of my angst was for nothing. I am thinking that since the phone was working, and turned on, that they probably figured that it wasn't any "abuse" of water damage. Thanks for all of the information.
I was the proud owner of a shiny brand-new Galaxy S3 as of 7 p.m. July 14. On my way to the mall just before 3 p.m. the next day to purchase a cover, it slipped out of my hand and hit the pavement. Damage to screen and bezel from a fall of only 2 1/2 feet. The back cover even popped off! I had watched the drop tests for this phone and knew that with this one there was no way I'd think about not getting a protective cover. It is definitely not as tough as the other previous Galaxy S models. But I never would have expected so much damage from such a short fall. Anyways, it is going to cost me 130.00 for the deductible through the insurance claim, plus the aggravation that is already starting. It was supposed to be easy-peasy. Instead of helping me in store (they kept saying they couldn't do that-access to my account purchases at their fingertips plus me there in person with ID!), I have to print out an affidavit along with proof of ID. I totally understand that, but why not just help me in store! You guessed it, I don't have my own printer (I've been meaning to rectify this) although I do have a scanner. Long story short, lack of a scanner means I lose 24 hours-can't do this until tomorrow. Then barring any further BS from T-Mob or Asurion, I'm told I get a new phone the next day. Too bad I'll be out of town by then, but, oh, well. That's what I get for not having a printer. Now for the real rant! Gorilla glass my a$$! If Samsung is going to make a phone with this slick plastic back and with a plastic bezel, they should just ship it with some cheap plastic protective cover so that you can make it out of the store and have time to shop for a cover to your own liking! Don't get me wrong, I love my new phone, however I'll really consider the build quality of the next phone I buy. I will especially pay attention to slick edges and plastic bezels.

The guy at Car Toys brought out the ugliest case I'd ever seen, so I refused it. Went out the next day at my earliest convenience to buy a decent case. One block from home, disaster struck! Would have been cheaper to buy that case and throw it away the next day. It is costing me $130.00 in deductible fees for the replacement. Now I've read that some guy dropped his while in a case and it still broke.

Simple solution: don't drop your phone. I didn't drop my HD2 in the whole year I had it.
I have to tell customers the same thing, we have nothing to do with Asurion, you can use my phone but I cant file anything for you unfortunately.
The only reason you have to jump through so many hoops with Asurion is because since you just got it, it hasnt registered on your account, so there is really not way for them to know if you actually own the phone unless you provide that affidavit and proof or purchase.............I broke my S3 after 2 days and even though i work for T-Mo and still had to go through the same thing

That's what I wanted from them, to use their phone. Also would've saved me time if I could have printed that form right in the store. I had everything I needed with me at the store: receipt, box with IMEI, my ID. I wasn't asking them to do it for me, just to call from there and confirm from their records that I purchased the phone. Anyway, a couple of calls today to Asurion got them to approve my claim a little faster, but not in time for the replacement to arrive before i leave for Seattle. So it's being shipped to where I will be there.
Mine broke within 6 hours of having it. I got it, late at night, fell asleep while texting, and when i woke up it was on the floor and the screen was cracked to hell. I silently weeped. I was suppose to get a case the next day.

OP I think you can sign up online for insurance within 14 days of getting the phone. Check your plan/phone options on AT&T website. You do not have to prove to them that the phone is in impeccable condition.
You might want to look into 3rd party insurance that covers that type of thing, such as Square Trade for future phone purchases. Accidents will happen, but most warranties don't cover things like this.
And in terms of the crack itself, I think this proves what I always suspected about Gorilla Glass 3 - it is stronger by design, so they make the layer thinner so the phone is thinner. The layer of smaller thickness is just as strong (hopefully not less strong) than the thicker layer of GG2 on SGS3.
With the screen larger than the one on SGS3, there is less bezel on sides of the screen, less support for the glass layer, and that makes the whole screen less rigid.

Yeah unfortunately I did the same thing, and mine got a crack in it, what is really unfortunate is the fact that the lcd touchscreen and glass may be glued or so close together, you might have to get the whole thing fixed and samsung charges 169.95 to do it and I've been told if you wait a few months it will get cheaper, but I don't know by how much.

It is not fraud. You are NOT obliged to have a functioning device while signing up for this insurance online. They just make the sign up window short, to protect themselves.
But speaking of this insurance, yes, i just checked, AT&T will charge you $199 deductible for SGS4!!!!!!!!!! That is on top of $7/month ($84/year) they want you to pay for insurance.

Better to invest in the ugly (to some) otterbox or kraken.
unless you have insurance, or you must pay some money for this damage:laugh:
Sorry for not posting, I've been busy with work.
An update: I talked to AT&T and told them I received the phone like that and must have happened when it was shipped. There's no physical damage as I can tell. The crack is on the inside of the screen. I sent the phone out to them and they said they'll inspect it and ship me a new one.
I would def recommend getting a case, something that can survive a fall because I had a case on this but it's pretty lightweight compared to others.

Maybe I missed it. But did you have any kind of case on it at all?
While on this topic, it should be noted that many major credit cards offer protection for free against exactly this kind of stuff. I know Amex does.

i had this one on:

it's so lightweight and didn't really protect anything.

Damn that sucks. Sometimes it's just the angle of the hit that gets you. I'm wondering if it caught a corner or edge of something on the screen. It really sucks if the glass cracked from the tension produced by the corner of the shell hitting the ground.

Heh, critics weren't lying when they said the Galaxy S4 is way more fragile than the S3. I knocked off my nightstand in the middle of the night, landed on my wooden floor and have this dumb hairline crack.
The phone is only 5 days old and this may seem like a dumb question but is it possible for AT&T to switch it out?

Just keep it and use it until we can buy replacement screens.

So quick run down, I pre-ordered the phone on launch day of announcement, and the phone came in today. i was so excited! anyways messing around with it some, and it was pretty damn cool! got on my car, had the phone on my lap, took a turn and it went in between the car seat, and the center console ( "pit of death", or "the void" as i call it ). Once i got home, and started to fish for the phone, and when i grabbed it i heard a crack. This is the result....
im now contacting google to see how much it would cost to get it fixed since i didnt get the protection plan (first phone that ever broke on me so i thought i would be fine), if not just repair it myself.
Edit:
So to give users a TL,DR version of the scenario, I was handed over to another company for no warranty support. OEM parts so not bad. replacement cost for screen is $150.
damnnnnnn that hurts i have already ordered the few cases.
I'm gonna go by Verizon in the morning, see if they have a case for a decent price. I dropped my Note 7 in the void a few times, but since it was on recall I couldn't care less. Now that I'm stuck with the Pixel XL for 2 years, I am gonna protect it lol. Keep us updated on the cost of repairs, though. I didn't get the insurance either
That sucks man. Let us know how much will be to fix it.
That blows... :/ Makes me kinda glad I ordered it with a case and glass screen protector.
So after calling Google, i pretty much got bounced back and forth between them and HTC. I'm not gonna deal with that crap.
There seems to be a shop close to me that seems to have replacement screens available for $150, thinking of just biting the bullet because looking around online, doesn't seem to have much options without being stuck waiting.
Sort of blows cause my tempered glass protector was scheduled to arrive either tomorrow or saturday.

:crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:
for you.....
One reviewer had a 5 inch pixel that broke the screen. Seems even with gorilla glass these phones are fragile. Waiting on mine from the google but ordering a good case now...
As I'm fretting about why my order has been processing for 50 hours now I see this and now I feel less crappy.
My condolences OP.
If you used a Credit card to purchase it you may have some kind of protection

I was worried about this exact thing. Does Google not have an official repair service set up for incidents like this? If so, this is going to be really bad for anyone who hasn't purchased the protection..

Can you not add the insurance after the purchase within a certain time? Make the claim afterwards? Just a thought

Wow major bummer.. ordering one of those rhinobumper thingy's that xda promoted... the video sold me, I'll try it to protect my baby.
Bummer! Although hearing you called Google and are getting bounced between them AND HTC is very disheartening! Thought this phone was "the first by Google"?! And that HTC was basically a silent partner. If indeed the case, Google should be handling this themselves, not bouncing people off to HTC...a vendor who isn't even on the marketing materials!

This. Most of these policies have a week or two grave period where you can opt in.

For some reason, Google won't let you add warranty after placing the order (preorder). It has to be at order time itself.
I tried to add warranty even before my phone was shipped, and was told "No"
If paid with credit card, there may be hope. Or add square trade warranty.

Yeah sucked getting bounced back to each other. I'll probably try giving them a call again in the morning to see what happens then. Hopefully I wont get bounced around by them and get this resolved by them, I would like to try to avoid a 3rd party if possible.
so i just realized not too long ago after removing the case that there is a slight bump on the back side of it too. I really hope it doesn't affect the internals in any way shape for form.
I was on the fence about buying a case. I am now buying a crazy fancy one.
$900 for a phone that easily cracks?
HTC is handling repairs I read somewhere. It sounds like they may not have all their ducks in a row yet between HTC and Google on repairs.
