Hey all, just a head up to those afraid to root because of warranty. I rooted mine and the phone stopped charging the following day. I returned it for repair thinking it won't be repaired but it has been fixed with a new IMEI given. So if you are scared, fear not. ROOT AWAY.
I think it does but if they find out the has been rooted

Hey, my phone just stopped charging today and Rogers said it doesn't matter if it's rooted since the phone is meant to be open-source. I am also getting my phone replaced by them... Does the charging matter have to do with the root?
Ps- wtf is a loggex backon? lol?
How about when the phone has been unlocked?

Wow... that is so unlike Rogers! But, good to know anyways.
By the way my phone stopped charging within days of me first getting the phone. Turns out that the USB cable was faulty.
How about the condition when you have unlocked the phone?
Does Rogers respect the warranty if the phone has been unlocked by entering the SIM unlock code?
Just spent an hour on the phone with Sprint, talking about my account. Awesome rep, really knew his stuff and helped me save some money on my bill.
Anyhow, I told him I wanted to talk to a supervisor and give the man props for being good at his job.
In passing, I brought up the threads on here about Sprint tracking rooted phones and cancelling contracts.
From the supervisor's own words:
"Sprint cannot and will not cancel a contract due to a device being rooted or modified. Sprint can only void the warranty. Also, they do NOT have the capability of knowing if a phone is rooted with out physically examining it"
Now, a certain troll started some BS here a few weeks ago about the OTA and Sprint knowing if you're rooted by whether you accept it or not.
THIS IS FALSE!!!!!!
"Sprint cannot force an end user to accept any updates"
End of Story!
Thanks, the dude on the other thread claims the he ran RUU, but I think he forgot to flash s-on, so that is how the sprint tech department knew that he had root. I was very shocked by his statement of packet sniffing and root checking etc.
EDIT: the other thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1137063
The other thread is an example of what happens when 16 year olds root their phone and thether xbox 360.
Now he got everyone paranoid, a day before E3d launch.
Boehner.....
Also under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 if you are rooted only your software warranty is invalid (bootloop, and 4G key loss for example). If your USB port breaks they still have to honor the hardware warranty.
An exception is if you root your phone, load the wrong, or a defective ROM which causes the CPU to peg then overheat causing the CPU chip to China Syndrome into the system board.
i knew they couldnt cancel your contract b/c your rooted! thanks for the info hipkat!

No Prob. I had him specifically say, with no uncertainty, you cannot be cancelled for rooting your phone and they cannot magically track whether you're rooted or not from a remote location.
Now he DID say that if you are abusing by having 45 gigs of data transfer a month, you are definitely getting a red flag, and I cited the post in this forum when I asked him about it.
From what Ive heard the new phones will be have an OTA with a boot loader. I have also seen that you can uninstall sprint apps on the new EVO 3D without root. This, to me, says that sprint will have to be ok with rooted phones whether they like it or not... Also, if someone is using that much data, that someone needs to lift their head up and put the damn thing down for a little while.
Deep down, I think we all knew this to be true. That other dude was just careless

Which is EXACTLY why I put this thread up. I just got tired of seeing this fear mongering being spread over the forums, and since the rep I was talking to was super cool, and knew just how to hook me up on my account, I knew he'd be a guy to ask, then when I talked to his supervisor, I just laid it out with a direct question; "Will Sprint cancel an account because of a rooted device and can you see if my phone is rooted from a remote location?"
Well, now y'all know the answers
Do you know how many people would be purposely rooting their phones just so that they could leave Sprint without an ETF? Especially the week iPhone 5 drops?

So it's odd to me how phone forums get locked and policed based on certain policies yet are totally contradicted in themselves.
For example, insurance fraud or any kind of proposed dishonesty is frowned upon and closed. Yet tutorials on how to root and unroot (which is mainly done to return a phone or for advanced in house tecnical assistance) is considered ok.
Yes, I'm rooted. And, yes I'm running a custom rom and love the freedom to do so. But to unroot and hide the fact that I was originally rooted for purposes of tecnical support or phone replacement purposes poses the same illegitimacy as the aformentioned example. Couldn't one argue that anything can be done for "development sake."
Now I haven't actually had the need to unroot (knock on wood) and am greatful to know how to do so. But, how is this different from all the other so called immoral threads.
No, I'm not flaming, nor am I affliated with any posters on here in anyway. I just think it's ridiculous that some posts are considered some kind of breech of morality that seem to lie on the same grounds as those that aren't.
P.S. I own my phone legitimately.

There was a court case against Apple for jailbrwaking the iJoke phones. The person won against Apple and the courts said the only way they could deny warranty on any phone was if Apple gave them away for free, but since they make customers pay for the phone, it is the customers property to do as they wanted and that jailbreaking in itself could not void warranty.
Search online, it is all there.

Insurance fraud is deliberately breaking your phone in order to get a new free replacement. This is a criminal offence.
Rooting/unrooting is not a criminal offence.
Spot the difference?
I do and as mentioned am not affliated with any of that illegal activity as some might be.
But to me it's all illegal.
The intent is still the same. Just my opinion. The phone is being modified in a way not intended by the manufacturer.
Not looking to get banned as I haven't been to date.
I enjoy the benefits of the devs on here.

You don't even have to unroot to have your phone fixed at sprint. People do it just in case. And I don't care how HTC wanted me to use this phone. I paid 500$ for this and I have every right to do what I want with it.

I have the phone as payment for rooting his new phone (I offered ten bucks for it but he said just keep it) I just wanted to know if it could be used as a phone. Maybe you should have read what I wrote instead of accusing me of insurance fraud. Now my friend who dropped the phone you can accuse of many things and he would be guilty of most of them. If you had a problem with the post you could have first answered my question. then let me know i couldn't talk about fixing broken phones before shutting the first one down so I wouldn't have had to start a second one. I have my EVO rooted. Once in the past I unrooted it to bring it to the store. I did absolutely not do anything immoral, unethical or illegal. The USB port stopped charging and actually pulled partially out when I unplugged the phone. There is a known problem with the EVO that this can happen so the phone is covered under the manufacturers warranty. I did not want my account flagged for rooting so I unrooted it before I brought it in for service. The very first thing they did when I walked in the store was unlock my phone, and asked if the phone was rooted (I think they asked because it looked different- I use launcher pro). There is no way that the USB port problem was caused by rooting. Is anything I did illegitimate? No. I only did it to avoid problems in the future. If you brick the phone you can not unroot for a replacement, you would have to claim it was damaged in another way, which would be fraud. The only unethical unroot I have seen people doing is losing their RSA keys and unrooting then claiming 4g just stopped working, but those threads are often flamed by people that think this is wrong.
All you had to do is say no it can't. I say thank you and I move on, its that easy. Good day sir

And that is my point. We don't allow discussion of phones that have been obtained/replaced by means of insurance fraud. I know you are just asking a question, but it's a question that is about a phone that was replaced with a new one by a fraudulent insurance claim.

It is not about hiding the fact it was rooted, it is about re-installing the stock ROM so Sprint repair can do a proper diagnosis. I'm sure step one of the troubleshooting manual says something like:
1. Is the phone software correct and up to date?
Which is why Sprint doesn't care that you are S-OFF, and why they have to install the latest version of the ROM if not already installed.

Install PLAN B from play.google.com now.
If the battery hasn't shut down, you might still be able to find it.
Though, you should've done it before you deactivate it. Even if you recover it, it's now been blacklisted by Sprint as stolen and there's no way to undo that.
You cannot remote install an app if you change your Google password.

There is actually a way to clear up a blacklisted phone. It is not easy but if you prove you HAVE the phone and you ARE its original owner it can be done. Sprint reps will give you a number to call and what not.

If you do this they'll reping and get the correct phone model. I don't just want the MT4GS to DISPLAY, I want T-Mobile to think I'm actually using it.
I bought the N4 from Google Play and I kind of don't want them to know I have it.
You kinda can't since T-Mobile just gets that information from your IMEI which is hardcoded in your phone. Each time you make a phone call or connect to the network in anyway your IMEI is sent (along with your SIM IMSI) to authenticate you to the network.
As such they've made tampering with IMEIs illegal as well

At&t knows I'm using an N4 based on the IMEI, and they don't sell it, so unless you're willing to possibly destroy your phone/spend some time in jail, I would just forget about it.

It was just a joke, the phone is actually damaged (cracked screen and kb double presses buttons) this is why I got the N4.
When I called Asurion they told me they no longer carry the phone and tried to give me a G2 (which I already own), I then got some documents in the mail showing that the N4 is now in my device bracket, so I want to raise hell and trade it in.
...and even if I did want to commit fraud it's no ones business but mine. What is this? The moral police forum? Why is everyone sweating the details instead of helping me with my inquiry? This is the most hostile (though it IS at a minimum) group of posts I've encountered since 2007! lol
Regular Law Abiding Folk....?

Haha that is awesome. How does a thread, to regular law abiding folks, make "tons of sense" if the thread itself is a scheme to commit fraud? Damn, how could we not have thought of that?
Like the other poster said, this is the best thing I've read all week.

I guess I'm the only one from the hood, the only torrent user, the only one who has ever used a cracked program, and the only one planning to rob my local bank this Friday with a banana in my pocket....lol
But seriously, stop being prudes guys... -_-
Your not going to be able to trick t mobile into thinking your phone is anything other than what it is. If your intent is to swap out an older phone through insurance your going to have to actually use the phone you want to claim so that t mobile can inform assurion or whoever of when the phone was last used. Your device sends a lot of info to its carrier every time you use it and editing a build.prop or whatever will not change that.

Not that I agree with what you are doing, but how was anybody supposed to come to this conclusion based on what you submitted in the OP?
Secondly, whether you have a secondary phone or not (N4) has absolutely no bearing on your ability to file for insurance for. Especially considering you purchased the phone at full value without a contract from a non-carrier vendor.

Having a secondary phone does not matter but when making a claim on the insured device they have to be able to verify that the damage occured within the last 30 days. If the phone has not been used in over 30 days they can deny the claim.

location : brooklyn. figures......lmao j/k bro lol but honestly you should know that XDA doesnt generally like helping people "get over" on cell phone compnaies. I mean, I personally dont care or look down on you for it. Heck if it works more power to ya. I think you knew this already hence why your OP mentioned nothing of the reasoning for you wanting to do this.
