this is one of those topics that I am genuinely curious about, because on the surface, I can't wrap my head around how A2SD could be useful on a phone with 2gb of [usable] rom. what's more of a hoot to me is that people usually set up a 1gb ext partition for storage... which is less than the phone has internally... so what did that accomplish?
additionally, with the decent amount of ram we have, swap doesn't seem like it would do much good... maybe on sense? I don't know.
it's just interesting to me that, on paper, the vision has no use for a2sd, and yet it is even built in to several custom roms that were developed specifically for the vision. HMmmmmMMmMmM.
discuss!~
i never got that either... the idea of swap always worried me ... so whats the deal with A2SD really?
I take out you guys haven't seen the size of some of the newer apps on the market?
I see it as, why not? It's a feature we should be able to use.

Ummm...Maybe it's because I'm not a frantic app downloader, but I have not had a problem that I would need A2SD. I have the apps I need Stock, weather, social networking, Google Earth, some games on the side and etc. and I still have 0.96 GB free, so really A2SD is not greatly needed unless your Android device is your gaming device, and even then it would be hard to fill up.
I did a little looking on the market, and I found about the top game in space would be 29m which I assume is mb. This is one of the best developed games graphics wise that I see on Android, and I would need this app downloaded a lot of times to fill up my space which is not going to happen because I don't need a lot of of those types of those games on my phone at the same time, and on top of my other games.
If the developer feels like maintaining it for the G2/DZ then go ahead not my place to stop it, but really not needed anymore
I actually use my EXT partition. I have quite a number of games on my phone and the 2GB A2SD partition helps (out of 2.01 Titanium reads, I've got 1.12 free and my internal storage has 1.16 free).
Plants vs zombies is over 70mb.
You have a massive sd card, why not have the freedom to put what you want on there. It was added to froyo for a reason, why remove functionality?
When that 1gb app that makes pancakes for you comes out, you'll be wishing you could move it to your sd.
Sent from my T-mobile G2
Froyo is general could be for lower end phones which do not have as much internal space and we are talking about the Vision, and if a phone starts making decent pancakes the tech that we would have would not need A2SD, and it would not be a phone...it would be my cook.
And even still you would need multiple games like that to fill up my internal space.
Like I said, not needed, but if the developer feels like maintaining it, it's not my job to get in the way.

Actually, I CAN (and do) use the Froyo/GB A2FAT option. PyroMod doesn't restrict its users to just using the EXT partition.
And speaking of massive SD cards, Kingmax boasted last month that they created a 64GB card. How much do you think THAT would cost?
Some games take hundred of megabytes

Dont most of them games go automatically to the sd card anyways?
In general, would the system load an app faster off the internal storage or off an sd card? I'm assuming the internal memory. Like others have attested, i have 58 apps and still got about 1 gig of memory free. A2SD can be useful for some, but for the masses, it's not necessary on our phone. And any apps that are HUGE go to the sd card automatically anyways(as in they create their own folder and put the bulk of the files on there).
Lets not forget there is two different A2SD methods. The old school method of going to an EXT partition, and the built in one with froyo and on that goes on the regular fat partition. And then in a way there is a third, which is what i just explained, where no matter where you set your install location, it puts the bulk of it's file in a folder on the sd card(it's own folder, not .androidsecure).

Hi....
I just wanted to check what are the chances that someone makes a Hero rom that doesnt require the swapping crap which kills SD Cards eventually and doesnt actually make the rom still run as smooth as normal builds like JF 1.51 etc..
So What are the chances that someone can make a normal Hero rom that you just install and start using right away. Without any swap crap
No one is forcing you to use swap. You can load a hero rom without using swap.
^^ Like he said you don't have to use swap. It will be hella slow though and that is NEVER going to change because your G1 has 192mb RAM and the Hero has 288mb, and the Rosie/Hero stuff was designed to run on that amount of RAM. That is all there is to it and it will always be like that.
"eventually"
Your card should have at least a years warranty anyway by which time prices, sizes and performance will have moved on.
I just unearthed an old 64MB memory stick duo from a few years back, 4 times the size and 1/128 the capacity of my 8GB microSD which was 99p cheaper.

Thanks man, that was pretty much the answer I was looking for !! I didnt understand why Hero required the use of swapper. But it makes sense now.
But thats not good news for me !! Coz I really liked the Hero build , its a joy to use!. But with the use of swapping I dont find it very enjoyable, its still lags when you start running various applications.
Anyway thanks for the replies guys........appreciate it !.
What size swap did you try? You can really go as high as you would like, although much over 96mb is overkill I imagine. Also it makes a huuuuuuge difference when you change the swappiness to 80 or 100.
I'm pretty sure your SD card is going to last more than 2 years despite having a swap partition. You make it seem like a swap partition will kill your SD card in months.
With a swap, your card will still last for a couple years. Cards at $10, so who the hell really cares anyways? Even if it lasted 6 months, big deal.
I'm not sure what settings you are running with, but you need to turn compcache and backing swap off, and ONLY use linux swap, 96mb with 80 swappiness. The rom is extremely fast, for me, just like the 1.5's. I was pretty much crazy shocked by just how fast hero is with a good swap running.
I use it daily wth exchange for work, with several widgets, i use the weather, the galleries, contacts with all the facebook integration, never a slowdown.
I have a 104Mb Swap partition, 1.6Gb ext3 partition.
I had set my swappiness to 80. But for example just trying to turn wifi tethering ON, completely killed my phone , it got soo slow that ended up freezing.
and Yes, i am running only Linux swap no comcache.
From your replies, I can see something is possibly wrong with setup.
Could it be due to the fact that my SD is a class 2 ?

Your swap size and ext3 is to big, thats prolly why you were having issues.
well, what do you recommend then ?
Swap size should be at 32 or 64. Some have gone higher but not recommended. And ext partitions shouldn't be more than about a gig.
I have searched, googled, etc, but I can not found a recommendation on partition size, for a 8GB SD, on swap, ext2.
Does a "recommended" exists?
Today I have 128 SWAP, and 896 Ext2.
What class sdcard? For a class 4/6 that seems pretty good it really depends on how many apps you have and how much multitasking you want to get done.
I basically want my phone to respond as fast as possible, to whatever i'm trying to do. So i do not mind using more, if needed.
Is not like I would be loading it with 7GB of music or videos.
It should be class 4, do not think it is 6.
Also depends on what rom you running. With Cyanogens 2.1 build its better that you don't use swap. So there's several factors to think about.
I'm currently using 4.x.
128mb swap is too big, fool! Drop it like it's hot.
You mean like it is going to do harm? or like it is a waste? you mean to totally drop it, or to drop it to 96, or 64 or 32?
Who let the dogs out?
Too big of swap size slows the phone. Many apps will be kept running in the background due to this. That's a bad thing. Go with 32 or 64 swap. And for an ext size, 528mb is sufficient. Unless, you have more than 200+ apps, which I doubt.
IMO, I avoid swap and use compcache instead. Swap slows down after a week. Only use swap if you like running a ton of Widgets and background apps.
am getting a bit concerned, only got 250mb, of ram left, and have only installed a few apps. Am just worried what will happen, when i download more apps, since most apps, despite being able to save them on the memory card willl still have to use the ram.?

I have 7 screens in the main menu full of games now on my Xperia Play. And have 149MB free space. Use the SD card for apps, thats why it came with a 16GB card. If you need to move your apps to make space go to "settings" then "applications" then "manage applications" then on the top "On SD card". Any that are not ticked can be moved to SD card to make room.

how do you add/remove homescreens? i am only using one at the moment and really want to get rid of the blank ones!!
39 games on my xperia play. You think this is low then you should know it was allot lower on my other phones especially my nexus one. This things a god send. Also bare in mine I have tango installed which takes 50mb almost.

You unfortunately can't. But it takes no processes extra so don't worry. You can remove on some custom roms but they haven't started on them yet, although CM will be on it me thinks maybe when this thing gets rooted.

Hmm, when you say "loading a lot of apps and games" do you mean running two games at once?
Downloading doesn't have to do with Ram availability. You can download everything as long as you have free space in your memory card .... But running them all is not a good idea even if you have 1gb free ram

this isn't windows mobile you guys... windows mobile stored applications in ram, and most winmo devices need a hud battery (hold-up battery) to maintain that application store when the main battery died. ANYWAY...
ram does not equal app storeage on android. Your apps can be downloaded to nand or sd card...
the xperia play has like 1GB nand/flash for the OS and data partition, plus apps2sd gives you virtually limitless app storeage. That is in the addition to the 400mb of RAM. Remember RAM and NAND/FLASH are 2 completely separate things. Volitile and non-volitile. RAM needs constant flow of power to retain information, NAND does not.
the 400mb of ram is useable at all times regardless of the quanity of applications installed, it's only effected by current running apps, and even with only 100-200mb free ram... that's plenty of any program you want to run, the memory management in android will assure that the active running app will have adaquate resources to run the app you are wanting to run, it silently closes inactive apps in the background to make most efficent use of that 400mb
sorry for breaking it down like barney, but it appears it was needed from the question and the responces that some people maybe didn't understand the question or situation exactly.

Lol, it's not a good idea to generalize your post like that, it's really insulting to talk to us like we don't know the difference between a Ram and Nand/Flash Rom
My understanding of the question as is 400mb Ram enough or not? Hence my answer is yes, having 100 mb free ram space is more than enough

I wasn't meaning it to be insulting and it's hard to tell where people are at on the technical level, but as a first time android person, and in sometimes first time smartphone person things can be a little confusing.
I just wanted to make sure the foundation was good in case there was any confusion.
Like I said I didn't mean it to be insulting, I'm honestly trying to help.
is'nt it really 512mb ram? but i think the system holds off a certain amount to run the OS or something so we're kinda left with 400mb. that said i think the real thing here is WE are'nt left with anything as WE dont do anything with the 400mb, the OS uses as it pleases depending on how many apps are running, surely? but i think johnsongrantr put it well....

yea I have no idea how they got 400, base 2 doesn't land on 400. Maybe 256 + 128 chips and they rounded to 400? No clue, I'd be curious to find that out myself.
I bet that ~112mb is probably shared video memory or something stupid like that. Everywhere I read has said 400mb though.
EDIT: it's 512, with 112 reserved for something that is not identified. Check the first couple paragraphs.
http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/2011/04/01/xperia™-play-hits-the-stores/
A lot of people here seem a little confused on what the Xperia Play has in terms of memory. I'll do my best to explain this without insulting anyones intelligence.
So the Xperia Play has 1GB of app storage which is basically the equivalent of hard drive space that a PC would have. This is used in conjunction with the SD card to store apps. It's also the same memory used for the OS. So it has 1gb of this memory, but ONLY 400mb is usable because most of it is used by the OS and bloatware.
So where the Xperia Play had 1gb, the DroidX has 8gbs. So really the Play has crap for storage.
Then on top of that the Xperia Play has 512mb of Ram. Everyone knows what that is, so I wont explain that. But this really isn't different from most high end Android phones.

@tornlogic- The Xperia play has dual channel RAM which is first in class and provides 2x performance boost to normal ram. Its the quality that matters, not the quantity.

This is where people are confused. I said that the Xperia Play has 512mb of Ram which is what most highend Android phones have. And that's great! I mean the Bionic will have a gig, but who cares? So why would you tell me quality matters not quantity when I said that 512mb is fine and dandy?
Its the 400mb of user storage, which is NOT dual channel I have a problem with.
Think of the 400mb storage as the phone's hard drive. You can throw the sd card in the trash, and the phone will work just fine. You can still dl apps, save photo, documents and whatever your little heart desires without an SD card. Its all stored on the 400mb of space Sony thinks is a lot, but actually isn't.
Again, my DX has 8gb of storage. The Sony has 400mb. Both phones have 512mb of RAM, with the Sony having dual channel RAM, NOT dual channel storage. Clear?
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
Lol, see now I was the one confused, I have seen the 400mb number quoted as the ram on many websites, I think even engadget. But that makes much more sense now that it's 400mb free NAND after the system image. Something wasn't matching up right with the numbers.
Thanks for the info about the dual channel ram, I didnt know that either.
I have tried every app to SD apps I can find and none of them work on my 3.1 tranformer.
All of them take me to the built in app management page and do not provide any move to SD BUTTON. I m nub to android .
android 3.0/3.1 manages the space for apps and data itself, you can use the space however you like, fill the whole 16/32gb up with apps if you like, or have just a few and tons of movies etc fill the space.
apps2sd isn't necessary or possible in honeycomb.
I was talking about the micro SD slot.
Are you saying that when it runs out of space on the internal storage it starts using the micro
SD if not how no I move apps onto the micro SD? That seem to be what those app to SD do. This is confusing.
The apps were for android 2.x devices that only had a small amount of storage and used SD cards for extra. Your transformer has 16GB of space to fill. If you keep your media on sd cards you'll have a hard time filling 16GB with apps.

Pre Honeycomb, you generally had a limited amount of space to install apps (say 512mb Max). With Honeycomb, pretty much all the space you have can be taken up by apps if required, but the SD card is still available for media.

Just add sat nav programs.
Copilot, Aura and Google Nav, theres almost 10gig. lol..
Even the Froyo A2SD doesn't help much to clear up internal space as only the app itself get move, any data related to the apps still reside in the phone.
Like already stated, even the 16G TF there's a lot of space.
I see everyone saying they'll get the 16GB and even complaining that's not enough for them. Here's the thing. I'm a pretty tidy person when it comes to memory. I only keep in my phone the music that I know I'll be listening, not my whole collection (1GB max). When I take photos, I either delete them whenever I go across them or if I want to keep them I send them to my dropbox. Same for videos. I'm that kind of person that if he sees his gallery is becoming big, will save the few photos and videos that are really important and delete the other 200 without heasisating. I might play one of these big hd games, but I'll install it, play it and uninstall it afterwards. Last but not least, when it comes to movies or series that I plan to see on my phone, I download them on the PC, transfer them to the phone and delete them as soon as I've seen them.
So, right now I'm using a galaxy S with an external 8gb micro sd. That's a total of 16GB, and I'm using 6GB after some time of not cleaning. Normally it's 4-5GB.
My logic is, if I get the 8GB model and use an external pendrive and usb OTG for the movies/series, wouldn't it be enough? 50€ is a big deal for me
You've talked yourself into it and, going from what you've said, I'd agree with you. I'm gonna get the 16GB version cause I can not because I need to
When 8GB prevents you from doing something you really want to do, that $50 won't be as big a deal then. But seriously, I think that the 16GB model will even have better resell when it comes time to upgrade as most people prefer the larger storage as evidenced by this forum. Everybody's needs and wants are different, but as for me, I'm not even hesistating, it's 16GB for me.
Here is my breakdown:
Sygic GPS - 4.5GB storage space (maps stored locally on the device)
Pictures - around 3GB
Nandroid backups - I have usually 1-2 on my phone which usually means 1-2GB
This usually results in about 3-4GB of storage space to play with for me....
See, I do backups but I don't store them on my phone (sounds a bit stupid if you ask me), and I always use the maps navigation for gps. The reselling argument seems like a good point though.
The thing you need to keep in mind is that that 8 or 16GB is your total storage for the device. the 8GB Nexus 7 has 5.92GB of free space with no apps installed (except the system ones that come with it, obviously). And, if I remember correctly, the Galaxy S has 1GB of application storage in addition. With the Nexus 4, every application you install, even if it doesn't have to download additional files to the "sdcard", will be eating into that 5.92GB of storage you have.
^This! Will definitely get 16gb!!
Use the cloud and Google music. If your using Tmo get unlimited data and you will be fine streaming on hspa 42

Buy 8 GB version
And I was thinking that if I do not get memory sometimes can get a USB OTG and resolve. Rather than give so much money, better give one dollar for such a cable.
And who knows? Usually use the most how much memory you have. Those who will buy the 16 GB version I bet from her to him and USB OTG.
So there's no point to invest so for 8 GB.
Now Nexus 7 16GB is $ 200 .. perfect for everyone!
If you want more put something nice to sit wi-fi, 3G and 32 GB!
This about the real space available being around 5.7GB bugs me really hard now. Thinking that the amazing new phone I'm gonna get has less space than I'm using at this very moment doesn't sound right. Guess I'll go for the 16GB. Better regret something I did than something I didn't do.
I also think I can manage 8gb (not even coming close to using it up on my current phone, thouh lately I havent been using it that much as a smart phone), but I think I will get the 16gb. One of the main reason why is that I plan on having the phone for a while. I think this is a significant point, since while I'd currently be able to manage with the 6gb (don't count on more than 8) my usage might change (ex. I mihgt have some heavy games installed), and I'd probably want to have at least a gb free (so that'd leave 5 gb) for just in case situations, ex for making a nandroid, or shooting a 30-second-turned-15-minute HD video, or to try out a new very big game, or to download a new distro I want to try out and dd it to a usb (via otg, ofc) using my phone because I'm feeling lazy and dont want to get up and the usb and cable were right next to me (I am joking, but I have done this, though, on a tablet but similar situation).
This brings me to something else that might pop up in the future and that could use up space (though, if it does come, it may be possible to put it onto a usb, or they may immediately ship the software in a dock, psst, don't tell canonical, I want to profit of off this idea ); ubuntu for android (or something similar). Seeing as how canonical ported/is porting (native) ubuntu to the nexus 7 I think there is a chance they might port ubuntu for android to the nexus 4, especially if it sells a lot, which we all know it will. Oh, yeah. Don't mix up Ubuntu on the nexus 7 (if you already heard about it, or google it) with ubuntu for android (the former replaces android, the latter supplements it). While I'm not a fan of Ubuntu, and I probably wouldn't use it that much, the geeky coolness of it would definitely overrule the practical usage of space but thats just me, you might find it useful, or not have it at all.
just buy the 8gb version, that 299 price tag looks damn sexy

Today I did an excercise with my LG G2x to see if 8Gb will be enough:
Here is my current setup:
1) Internal storage: 1.48GB (788 MB used, it has OS and sys apps)
2) Internal SD card: 5.22GB (4GB used)
3) SDCard: 32GB (12GB used)
The goal of this experiment was to see if I can do without 32GB sd card as I will have about the same storage space as 8gb N4.
1.48 + 5.22 = 6.7Gb
And N4 has 7.45GB (Not 8GB, as 8GB is in decimal system which equates to 7.45GB)
8,000,000,000 / (1024 x 1024 x 1024) = 7.45Gb
Anyways, assuming N4 will be left with 5.92GB after OS and System apps (people from N7 8Gb have this much available).
I deleted all possible crap from the Internal SD card (#2) but the "Android" folder was huge, over a gb. Plus there were tons of other folders created by apps equating to 600 mb.
Mind you I dont have much useful stuff in my 32gb sd card. So I moved my camera pictures and music to Internal SD card and moved backups to 32gb SD card.
So now I could barely fit everything in my Internal SDcard: its 5.11GB full. With no crap: Only has Music, camera taken pics and 700mb of videos and ofcourse "data" from android and app data.
So if I add 788MB from the Internal storage (from #1) which has OS I will be at 5.8 GB
That leaves me with 100 mb in my brand new N4 for taking what 50 pics? Maybe? Or 25 Photosphers?
For those interested: I am running clean lean CM7 with 32 apps, 2 of which are games.

See, I do backups but I don't store them on my phone (sounds a bit stupid if you ask me), and I always use the maps navigation for gps. The reselling argument seems like a good point though.

Lucky guy to be in an area that lets you use maps over the air. I could not manage on google alone, and use Sygic.
