Looks like the Epic 4G will be receiving an official build of Gingerbread Android 2.3.4 while we may be stuck at 2.3.3.....Did Sammy finally beat HTC when it comes to firmware updates???

Yeah who really gives? I'm on 2.3.4 already without the need to wait for an official buggy OTA update.

How is sprint an android being kept up to date a bad thing for evo people? It can only bode well for phones to have a healthy lifespan on our carrier.

New Feature

Ok, I don't know how many people would use this...
Improvements included with Android 2.3.3 update
1. Improved and extended support for NFC – this allows applications to interact with more types of tags and access them in new ways. The new APIs have included wider range of tag technologies and allow limited peer to peer communication.
Also it has a feature for developers to request Android Market to not to show their applications to users if the device does not support NFC. In Android 2.3 when an application is called by a user and if the device does not support NFC it returns a null object.

Well, since we don't have NFC...
2. Support for Bluetooth non-secure socket connections – this allows applications to communicate even with devices that is not having UI for authentication.

3. New bitmap region decoder added for applications to clip part of an image and features.

The only thing even close to important in 2.3.4.
So OP, explain to me again how much it really matters that we might be "one up'd" or "beaten" by the Epic?
meh, just a revision tick. HTC included a few things from 2.3.4 in our update already.
I was using gtalk video chat all the time so that my daughter could talk face-to-face with my mom, who lives 8 hours away. She doesn't have a phone with a front-facing camera, so being able to vchat phone-to-computer was awesome. Just another reason I'm pissed about not being able to root. And no, I did not accept the OTA.
All the respondents apparently aren't hip to the ongoing discussion of Sammy versus HTC.
I think I could shed some light...
In many threads throughout the forum there have been countless debates, SGSii or 3d, Nexus S 4g or ed or evo, and many other related discussions. One of the largest arguing points in each and every one of the threads has been that HTC keeps there devices updated AND that HTC is quicker to bring updates to devices... siting that Samsung is slow to update, if at all.
I think the point the OP is trying to make here is that HTC would concede to Samsung on that point in this situation. I think it matters very little what type of update it is, it's the point of the matter that is relevant.
Anyhow... hope that helps.
What's with the guy who said "I already got 2.3.4"... what a MOE'Ron. That's great dude, yeah you're rooted and on a custom rom like NEARLY EVERYONE ELSE is in this community. What's your point? Is your custom 2.3.4 rom going to disburse it's own OTA update to the rest of the millions of Evos out there? What a goob..
Doesn't the 2.3.4 google voice work in 2.3.3 anyhow?

Sure it does...if you are rooted, and can get it on your phone. Currently, I am not rooted. I just tried to install the 2.3.4 version by dling it from dev, and installing from the sdcard. No dice. Tried several times. It won't install.
Im speaking from experience, usually Samsungs updates create more problems than it solves. I really don't care if they got 2.2.3, watch it also break something on the phone also.

Now back on topic. Personally I am not too concerned about them getting the update since I am going to the EVO3D on Fri. any way. Most people that care about what 2.3.4 brings already have it cause they rooted and installed it.

nope, gingerbread has been held back for the nexus one because of security issues and the need for the api that will allow apps written for dual cores will run on single core phones
2.4 is still going to be gingerbread that will most likely be the offical update for the nexus one

Actually not true, it has been held back and 2.4 will be GB. They are adding in dual core support before they release it, well official carrier release that is.
No. That's simply not true.
2.3 is still being developed. In fact, an update from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3 was just released today. Today. Today!!!!
All of this speculation is based on one alleged Viewsonic leak that was probably far from accurate.
2.3 is Gingerbread. It is still being developed. Carriers are working on 2.3 updates as we speak. There is NO evidence otherwise.

Yes it was updated today for the Nexus s, the ONLY phone running an official 2.3 OS.
The speculation has been verified by several credible news outlets that google has indeed created a new branch of GB GRI17 which will be 2.4 GB which is the version that will be released to carriers. They have also verified that this will push back the release of GB to phones running froyo, since there is only 1 phone running 2.3. But dont let facts get in the way of it being incorrect though.

This is an email that I recieved from HTC after emailing them asking about the sense 2.0 update (some things removed from it for my privacy):
Dear ,
Good question! We understand how important it is to have the latest updates for your device.
I'm happy to inform you that your phone, the HTC Evo is definately on our list to recieve the 2.3 Android OS update. This update is expected to include an update to the Sense UI.
At this time, we don't have an exact launch date. However, we estimate that it will be available in the second quarter of 2011 (anywhere from the beginning of April, to the end of June), assuming that there are no major setbacks. Once we have a better idea of when this update will be availble for your phone, we'll be sure to announce it through Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/htc) and Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/htc), and of course, HTC.com.
Thank you for taking the time to contact us.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number.

So what about the iphone 3g? Apple is no longer supporting that phone either. hmm...
The fact that you're posting in forums designed specifically to incite interest in rooting phones and installing the latest firmware tells me you are either an idiot or troll, op.
Likely both.

Whaaaa? I thought April Fool's Day was on the first. In so far as I can tell, the only thing Apple has to offer that Android doesn't is the number of higher quality games, and that gap is shrinking in a big hurry. Beyond that, my Evo does everything an iPhone does, and I don't have to put up with AT&T or Verizon. Bonus!
And at any rate, didn't Apple and AT&T brick a bunch of iPhones last year with OTAs?
Yea, and they will brick it remotely if its jailbroken now too, bunch of phone-nazis!

The evo will not be the first to get the GB update, but we should get it eventually

Yea sorry to burst your bubble, but im pretty sure his big announcements are going to be to announce upcoming nexus devices.
I doubt we are going to see an official Gingerbread release for the vibrant because it doesnt just pop up over night, an official release require extensive testing, the likes of which usually result in leaks or at the very least somewhat substantiated rumors. If you recall in our wait for Froyo we saw countless leaks over the span of several months.
I for one cannot wait to see the announcement for the prime and other nexus devices. Im through with carrier branded devices.

Ah my bad, i only read the first page :x lol
I got his attention:
SamsungJohn,
I'm not meaning to harrass you at all, but is there any way you could shed some light on whether or not the Samsung Vibrant will be getting a gingerbread update?
It has been in question for a long time now, seeing as the other SGS devices got it... we are all kind of wondering why it was left in the dust. I mean, Gingerbread improves on the CPU the Vibrant is equipped with, bringing it to its full potential more-so than Froyo.
I, and many others purchased the phone on a 2 year contract with updates in mind. Its only a year old phone, it seems kind of rude that it has already been abandoned (if that is the case) I know you don't make all the decisions there at Samsung, but If you can see it from our point of view, could you maybe speak with someone that does have control over the situation?
I love the Hardware, beautiful screen, and Samsung in general... But please John, tell them they are going to lose future customers if they drop phones after such a short amount of time. It irritates people who bought a phone with the SGS label, and already people are seeing it as inferior to device to those of the same timeframe, such as the G2... Because HTC has kept the phone updated and their customers happy, Many of them will return to HTC for their next device.
Thanks for your time, and being a part of this community.

I am not sure what SamsungJohn's official title or job is but he is certainly not in customer relations. He has never given a decent straight forward answer. I almost think I would rather have a lower quality phone that gets updates than a high quality hardware phone that never gets updated.
I love my phone but not releasing updates has made me think my next phone and tablet will not be a Samsung device. I have a 2.2.1 wifi Galaxy Tab that has never seen an update and a Vibrant with only one update. And to be fair, the update to FroYo on the Vibrant was something that it should have shipped with to begin with. To compound the issue we get no response or time frames on any updates. That is just horrible customer service.
Thanks for the hardworking of T-mobile or Samsung,
I wont get any Android products without "Nexus" in their ass
I will stay with T-mobile because it suits my current needs. 2 lines $130, unlimited un-throttled data on both; but I will never buy another phone that is not Nexus.
I almost rather be the douche with an Iphone, know it's being locked down, have less features, etc, but know I will have a working gps and support in 6 months. Being able to make calls....well they are all just holding the phone wrong anyway.

yep, and imagine how many end users dont root their phones and such..
its kinda sickening you need to be rooted just to even get rid of bloatware.
Android seems to be a breeding ground for this type of thing

If stock SE had it, all stock-based ROMs including WB would have it.
Since stock doesn't have it, WB ROM doesn't have it.

Only devices in the US apparently.
I could be wrong.
But that means...
Out of 20 of my friends... only I and one other friend have rooted.
So now that the JIG is up will phone manufacturers remove the trojan?
I've stock SE, run Logging checker by Treve and on CIQ checks it says "Check complete" and no aps is listed, so I think stock SE hasn't CIQ
Or am I wrong?
Ha, I'm not a president, not a minister or else so I don't care what they are going to do with what I type lol

CIQ is bundled in kernel, firmware contains only parts of it apparently.
Also here you can read the official statement from the company itself.
My personal opinion, according to everything I've experienced so far in real life,
the truth is always somewhere in the middle.
I am not a big fan of "hyper-hypes", if you will.
I certainly think that legally it is not right to collect any personal data without user's acknowledgement but, if you ask me, CIQ is hardly the Rootkit Of All Evil.
And don't jump into the conclusion that I do not have respect for personal privacy, because I really, really do.
To me, however, posting photos on Facebook and having Facebook recognise faces and suggest which friends to tag
(which means that they don't just collect numbers and statisticks, they get to know our FACE, the thing that singles out the most as individuals.)
is much, much more horrifying and orwellian than HTC or any other mobile company knowing when my device crashed, a call dropped or what launcher do I use.
I've looked through the CIQ reports and findings by TrevE and while I fully recognise the achievement, the effort and the skills of said developer,
I fail to see the "evil" part in the extend that it's been presented lately.
It certainly looks bad, but I just can't bring myself to panic over it.
Also now there's a paid app that will supposedly remove logging from some devices. I am not sure I like that.
Someone will make money out of this and maybe, just maybe, has motive to want to keep users in panic, fear and uncontrollable rage over this.
Of course, I could be totally wrong, but still, it's something to think about.
And last but not least, panic and sciolism has never ever been a good advisor nor they will be. EVER.

To me the point is you are paying exorbitant prices for cell phones only to have companies planting spyware and selling your private info to make even more money than you initially paid for the phone..
I'm shocked that I read a lot of people that are alright with this.
Does no one see what this kind of breach of our personal freedom leads to?

I want to see an official ICS on my Vibrant for a few reasons. So keep the comments to Sammy going folks. Don't let an announcement like this go out without voicing your support for it.
Sammy on G+ (with Facebook, YT & Twitter links)
Samsung is rethinking the update not T-Mobile...... If we didn't get an official gingerbread update we most likely won't get an ice cream sandwich update. It will most likely only be going to the original galaxy tab and the I9000 if any.

Developers have to start with something. Why not start with a ROM intended for a particular device with all features working, like e911?

Per this article and other, similar articles, Samsung is reconsidering. Not T-Mobile. The difference is, Samsung may roll out ICS for Galaxy S on other carriers and not T-Mobile, just like GB. Hopefully Samsung will atleast throw us a bone via Kies some day.
Squeek those wheels!
Yes the article sounds good but!, like someone above posted "tmobile [or samsung] hasnt rolled out gingerbread for the vibrant YET" !!
We need to up the pressure on both tmobile and samsung they cant afford to loose "millions of users over a dumb update" !
An thats what they are worried about!
So do what I do to every inane tweet by either tmobile or samsung retweet while working in the words > "...gingerbread for the vibrant..#shameonsamsung #boycottsamsung.."
Can I make a difference alone? no But Millions of us can!
Give them hell!
p.s. This is also the same for the pathetic excuse the cyanogenmod team came out with for them stopping support for the vibrant ie the 911 problem. The 911 problem was that way from day one with cm roms so cut the bs! The truth for the cm rom team is they got pissed off by someone and decided to screw all of us vibrant people over for the crap from one person!
yes different excuses but same results were getting screwed!
I most assuredly support cm rom team and all of the other developers on XDA but what happened to the team spirit? Come on guys post a disclaimer about the 911 and get back on the updates!
PLEASE!
No hope for us vibrant users. They are talking about international galaxy S, and probably US carrier versions that officially got gingerbread.
Ya this won't happen for the vibrant tmo doesn't even carry it anymore, they already have are money we had to ***** to even get froyo that had to be installed via kies mini. If one of the other us variants gets ics that would be are best bet, then again it won't be a easy port it never is.

I'm sure we will not get an official ICS from T-Mobile.
dont be so down guys, theres always a chance

Yeah, Rider.. that's also what you said about getting laid, but.. here you are. ;D
i'm sure samsung said this just to keep all the outcry to a minimum as possible. delay, delay, delay until the people give up and move on. it only makes sense to release a non carrier aosp version rather than figure out how to shrink touchwiz being that this is mainly targeting the tech savviests out there.
so if any of you haven't yet, sign it! show samsung we care and want them to improve.
we might need to start our own petition.
this is for the i9000, but hey it's close enough

thats for i9000, you know that, but i don't think us signing it will actually do any benefit for US... i signed it anyways.
Yeah the same chances as us winning the lottery...
Why do people give in so easily?
I admit Vibrant will probably never get an official Gingerbread or ICS update. Samsung is certain to skip us if they update international Galaxy S to ICS. That doesn't mean we should throw in the towel. Tweet them, who knows we might end up getting an update to either 2.3 or 4.0.
Make your voice heard.
