Where does my storage space go - Acer Iconia A500

Hello
I have a question.
I looked at my storage space today (in settings) and it shows as 16gb used and 11gb free. But i dont have apps that large.
So my question is. Is this an error or when its not what uses so much storage space?
I looked trough my apps and none uses enough storage to fill this much space.
What did i overlook?

Do you have the 32GB or 16GB model? Also, which section are you looking at?
I have the 16 GB model, so my "Internal Storage" section reads 12.51GB total space. The graph breaks it down as 4.55GB of media files and 0.49GB (500MB) for applications, with 7.47GB remaining free space.
Unfortunately, you have not provided near enough information for us to assist effectively. More detail please.

Google map takes 256 mb itself and can grow with cache .

Its the 32 gb model
The 16 gb used are just applications. 700MB for media and 11 gb free.
So the space adds up correctly to the 32 gb version
But i have only like 35 apps installed. Most of them i have on my phone too
I looked under applications and none of the downloaded apps (even with data and cache) are big enough by themself or summed together to fill 16gb. Did not look trough all app that came preinstalled though.
So i am wondering where the storage space goes.

memory capacity and usage on x10

im still a newbie for android so im a bit confused....
just got my x10 from rogers and so far im quite happy with it. im rather confused about the internal memory though. the x10 is advsertized at having 1gig of internal storage and about 384mb of ram. under settings-->sd card and phone storage, the available space for internal memory is around 409 mbs. i dont have much in here yet except for a few basic apps so i dont know where the rest of this space went to.
secondly im getting mixed info on the available ram. i got the taskiller app and after killing all apps (except for clock, batterylife, calendar), it tells me i have 155m available(dont know if this the total ram available). where was the other memory being used? i downloaded an app called peak memory usage which gives a breakdown of all apps running and how much memory they consume and it tells me there the total ram on phone which does not match the proposed memory size on the add. the detail that i saw were as follows:
total: 268
avail:143
active: 89
inactive: 90
furthermore these numbers doesnt seem to be adding up.
can someone please advise my on this. am i just missing something here? what happened to the rest of my ram and internal storage? is there an app out there to get more accurate info on this? any help would be appreciated. thanks

well i have similar issues.. may be sumone could help...
I also have a similar question. Not sure why there is only 268 of total memory in the x10.
I might be able to answer one question. The 1ggb of internal memory is not for storing only, it also contains the actuall Android OS therefor only giving about half of that to play around with and i belive this will furthermore fill up when future Android 2.x update arrives.
Cheers!
hi, i also have same question..
i recently installed program called "Android System Info"
it clearly says :
Internal Memory
Max: 465.0Mo Free: 336.9Mo
RAM
Max: 268Mo Free: 87Mo
you see is not 1 GB internal memory...., is this another lack from 1.6 android????
I don't know about 1Gb internal but i know that android 1.6 can access only 268Mb memory and after the upgrade to 2.x the phone will have access to all 384Mb of RAM.
Are you talking about the 1GHZ of processor confusing it with 1Gb internal storage?
I beleive so..
rogers site shows 1gb internal as well gsm arena shows it as 1gb internal memory

[Q] help. none of the app to SD card apps work!

I have tried every app to SD apps I can find and none of them work on my 3.1 tranformer.
All of them take me to the built in app management page and do not provide any move to SD BUTTON. I m nub to android .
android 3.0/3.1 manages the space for apps and data itself, you can use the space however you like, fill the whole 16/32gb up with apps if you like, or have just a few and tons of movies etc fill the space.
apps2sd isn't necessary or possible in honeycomb.
I was talking about the micro SD slot.
Are you saying that when it runs out of space on the internal storage it starts using the micro
SD if not how no I move apps onto the micro SD? That seem to be what those app to SD do. This is confusing.
The apps were for android 2.x devices that only had a small amount of storage and used SD cards for extra. Your transformer has 16GB of space to fill. If you keep your media on sd cards you'll have a hard time filling 16GB with apps.

Pre Honeycomb, you generally had a limited amount of space to install apps (say 512mb Max). With Honeycomb, pretty much all the space you have can be taken up by apps if required, but the SD card is still available for media.

Dave

honeycomb is different from android 2.x ...the whole internal storage is like the old microsd....it will take quite a bit effort to fill in its 16 or 32gb space ....

Just add sat nav programs.
Copilot, Aura and Google Nav, theres almost 10gig. lol..
Even the Froyo A2SD doesn't help much to clear up internal space as only the app itself get move, any data related to the apps still reside in the phone.
Like already stated, even the 16G TF there's a lot of space.

Nexus 4 storage

I just checked my available storage and it says I have less than what I should have available. Is this a glitch or am I over looking something?

That missing space is reserved for the system. Ram is advertised as 2gb but is 1.8gb. Same goes with if you're to buy a hard drive.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the total space already excluding the reserved space?

The way you word is kind of confusing.
You buy 16GB
16GB - Whatevers reserved for Android = comes out to be 12.96GB
It's the same thing if you were to buy CPU RAM, Internal & External Hard Drives, microSD, SD, USB drives etc.
Yea but look at my remaining space it's not supposed to be that small according to the graph and what space is being occupied by everything else on the list

Do you have a bunch nandroid backups?
You could use DiskUsage to figure out whats eating your space. Nicely shows you graphically your entire "SD card". If the System Data section in DiskUsage is huge, then like jr67 said, maybe backups.

Would that be the cause of this?

How much useable space on 128GB version?

Hey guys I was looking at my storage space today and i noticed I only have 111GB useable. I know that several GB are consumed by the system image and that the whole 128GB is not available, but 17GB used by the system image seems excessive.
you usually get 119GB after format, 128 x 7%, 119GB remains then OS partition and then more since its 64bit.
My 64gb has 54gb free
They define GB by 1000 where it's really 1024 so formatted capacity is less,
http://www.ussscctv.com/harddrivesizecapacitiescalculator.aspx
Mine had 111 GB free straight out of the box.

Same here!
The larger the amount of storage, the larger the system partition. Dunno why, but it has been this way as long as I can remember.
Ok cool. Thanks for the replys

S10+ 1TB System Memory usage

Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if everyone else has a ton of bloat on system for their 1TB version? My current system memory is at 86.4GB which is quite a lot.
If you do have the 1TB version, how much storage is system memory taking up?
Verizon 1TB, 87.4GB for system
Memory ≠ storage!
I'm seeing similar, ~83GB from fresh reset on unlocked USA version.
As far as memory is concerned it frequently goes over 6GB used. That's a lot however the device does have 12GB and unused memory is wasted memory.
Indeed memory does not equal storage, I'm just a bit surprised that overall storage used by the system is a beefy 80+GB, I'm curious if the other models with different storage configurations have different sizes and what are some under the hood differences due to such.
Edit: Forgot to mention, thanks for replying! I'll try and look into some other models with different storage configs and see what they have.
I don't know how you got that screen but on my 128gb model the system partition (guessing) is around 20-25 GB,. I have 99gb showing as available with very few apps and no data (2 day old phone) so system size must be somewhere in the 20 to 25 range

It's in Device Care > Storage > Storage Settings (3 dot menu)
On my old 64GB S8+ the system took up 10GB but is independent from the 64GB free space on it.
Edit: Misquoted, fixed.
Thanks, according to that page, system is 19gigs on my 128model
This is the 512GB model for reference.

The system has to allocate a certain amount of storage aside for switching storage sectors since all memory types have a finite amount of write and erase cycles. The system will take a block of storage that has been written to and erased, and reserve it as unavailable to the user. It will then free up an unused section of storage equal to what it had taken away. The more storage your phone has, the larger the system reserved storage is going to be. It's to prolong the life of the storage module and account for any bad sectors on the storage module.
