memory capacity and usage on x10 - XPERIA X10 General

im still a newbie for android so im a bit confused....
just got my x10 from rogers and so far im quite happy with it. im rather confused about the internal memory though. the x10 is advsertized at having 1gig of internal storage and about 384mb of ram. under settings-->sd card and phone storage, the available space for internal memory is around 409 mbs. i dont have much in here yet except for a few basic apps so i dont know where the rest of this space went to.
secondly im getting mixed info on the available ram. i got the taskiller app and after killing all apps (except for clock, batterylife, calendar), it tells me i have 155m available(dont know if this the total ram available). where was the other memory being used? i downloaded an app called peak memory usage which gives a breakdown of all apps running and how much memory they consume and it tells me there the total ram on phone which does not match the proposed memory size on the add. the detail that i saw were as follows:
total: 268
avail:143
active: 89
inactive: 90
furthermore these numbers doesnt seem to be adding up.
can someone please advise my on this. am i just missing something here? what happened to the rest of my ram and internal storage? is there an app out there to get more accurate info on this? any help would be appreciated. thanks

well i have similar issues.. may be sumone could help...

I also have a similar question. Not sure why there is only 268 of total memory in the x10.

I might be able to answer one question. The 1ggb of internal memory is not for storing only, it also contains the actuall Android OS therefor only giving about half of that to play around with and i belive this will furthermore fill up when future Android 2.x update arrives.
Cheers!

hi, i also have same question..
i recently installed program called "Android System Info"
it clearly says :
Internal Memory
Max: 465.0Mo Free: 336.9Mo
RAM
Max: 268Mo Free: 87Mo
you see is not 1 GB internal memory...., is this another lack from 1.6 android????

I don't know about 1Gb internal but i know that android 1.6 can access only 268Mb memory and after the upgrade to 2.x the phone will have access to all 384Mb of RAM.

Are you talking about the 1GHZ of processor confusing it with 1Gb internal storage?
I beleive so..

rogers site shows 1gb internal as well gsm arena shows it as 1gb internal memory

RAM? WTF?

rumours say the ram is 512mb, others say 256mb, some say 192mb, tmobile.com doesnt say anything..
does anyone have an answer for me? this is a perfect phone, the htc magic with a flashlight, 3.5mm jack, and a keyboard plus it works with wind mobile in canada..
but i dont want a slow device, 32b magic boards are terribly slow with just 192mb and my 32a magic is pretty decent with 256..if this device has 600mhz processor with 512mb ram then it should be flying..
Thats part of the mystery. The phone supposedly has 512 internal, but a lot of it is used up by the Sense bloat, and by a lot of the TMobile stuff here in the States. Mine out of the box had roughly 150mb internally available , and I am down to about 100mb free with some apps installed.
With that said, this thing is still pretty darn snappy. And when 2.2/Froyo comes along, it will have apps2sd available, which will help increase your internally available memory too. I'd say to go to a store and check it out, you'll be surprised how fast it is.
Reviews are claiming this phone runs faster then all the other android phones out there right now. Even with all the crap you can't uninstall from t-mobile its still very fast. I have yet to experiance any noticable lag.
No regrets here, I am glad my mytouch 3g died
145 m available for programs after hard reset....at least that's what mine had!
Android System Info on mine says 419MB of RAM. In the Slide's owner's manual it says 512MB of RAM.

Well the 145mb is how much internal storage you have for apps. It does have 512 for RAM. If I kill all my apps that are running I would have 250+ of RAM free. And this phone flies. I might kill all apps once a day and the phone stays fast at even 60mb of RAM free. No worries.

Yes i'm outta internal storage as well.need an apps2sd solution or root to remove all this bloatware.
RAM and storage are two completely different things. It has 512MB of both. Mine is showing 418MB of system ram, the rest presumably used for video, and the storage is partitioned into /system, /cache, and /data which is all that is usable for apps.

Can someone confirm the amount of RAM available?? (Only takes a few seconds)

Can someone confirm the amount of RAM that is available to the user? There were rumors that only 512mb was available (leaving the other 512 for the laptop dock). However, I've also heard that around 800mb was available to the user (meaning the full gig, essentially). To easily see this, download Android System Info from the market, open it, and on the first page/tab you can see RAM (total available, etc.)....
Thanks in advance!
I, too, would like to know the answer to this. It would be pretty weak of Motorola if it only allowed 512 of it to be used.
+1.
I would like to know this as well.
Bump
It says 425M available + 172 if I'm not mistaken.
From android system info there is 818MB RAM available, but after killing all threads the free RAM is no more than 510MB
motoblur/android cant be gobbling up 512mb worth of RAM. perhaps some is allocated to webtop? i would be very dissapointed if that were the case.
Thanks guys
Mine says 818MB with 432 available.

Bit advanced task killer only shows 394 + 111
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Mine says..
Max: 818MB
Free: 280MB
Maybe it allocates 512mb for webtop and when the other 512mb (or whatever size after format) runs out it starts using the 512mb from the webtop
Jesus i hope that's not true, there has to be a way to disable that.
Hey guys, those of you with the device, go into the "tasks" tab of Android System Info.....here you should be able to see EVERYTHING that is consuming memory.....in a task killer, you likely won't be able to kill everything (and you shouldn't). For example, on my inspire, there are a lot of core processes and things that wouldnt show up in a task killer (like phone, etc.). A close look in this tab should give us a clearer picture. It does, however, appear that the full gig (essentially) is available. My inspire's ram is 768 and my max ram is 623, so the atrix seems somewhat comparable in the proportion of available ram.

[DISCUSS] Low Ram Fears (400mb)

am getting a bit concerned, only got 250mb, of ram left, and have only installed a few apps. Am just worried what will happen, when i download more apps, since most apps, despite being able to save them on the memory card willl still have to use the ram.?

I have 7 screens in the main menu full of games now on my Xperia Play. And have 149MB free space. Use the SD card for apps, thats why it came with a 16GB card. If you need to move your apps to make space go to "settings" then "applications" then "manage applications" then on the top "On SD card". Any that are not ticked can be moved to SD card to make room.

Matthew

39 games on my xperia play. You think this is low then you should know it was allot lower on my other phones especially my nexus one. This things a god send. Also bare in mine I have tango installed which takes 50mb almost.

You unfortunately can't. But it takes no processes extra so don't worry. You can remove on some custom roms but they haven't started on them yet, although CM will be on it me thinks maybe when this thing gets rooted.

Hmm, when you say "loading a lot of apps and games" do you mean running two games at once?
Downloading doesn't have to do with Ram availability. You can download everything as long as you have free space in your memory card .... But running them all is not a good idea even if you have 1gb free ram

this isn't windows mobile you guys... windows mobile stored applications in ram, and most winmo devices need a hud battery (hold-up battery) to maintain that application store when the main battery died. ANYWAY...
ram does not equal app storeage on android. Your apps can be downloaded to nand or sd card...
the xperia play has like 1GB nand/flash for the OS and data partition, plus apps2sd gives you virtually limitless app storeage. That is in the addition to the 400mb of RAM. Remember RAM and NAND/FLASH are 2 completely separate things. Volitile and non-volitile. RAM needs constant flow of power to retain information, NAND does not.
the 400mb of ram is useable at all times regardless of the quanity of applications installed, it's only effected by current running apps, and even with only 100-200mb free ram... that's plenty of any program you want to run, the memory management in android will assure that the active running app will have adaquate resources to run the app you are wanting to run, it silently closes inactive apps in the background to make most efficent use of that 400mb
sorry for breaking it down like barney, but it appears it was needed from the question and the responces that some people maybe didn't understand the question or situation exactly.

Lol, it's not a good idea to generalize your post like that, it's really insulting to talk to us like we don't know the difference between a Ram and Nand/Flash Rom
My understanding of the question as is 400mb Ram enough or not? Hence my answer is yes, having 100 mb free ram space is more than enough

I wasn't meaning it to be insulting and it's hard to tell where people are at on the technical level, but as a first time android person, and in sometimes first time smartphone person things can be a little confusing.
I just wanted to make sure the foundation was good in case there was any confusion.
Like I said I didn't mean it to be insulting, I'm honestly trying to help.
is'nt it really 512mb ram? but i think the system holds off a certain amount to run the OS or something so we're kinda left with 400mb. that said i think the real thing here is WE are'nt left with anything as WE dont do anything with the 400mb, the OS uses as it pleases depending on how many apps are running, surely? but i think johnsongrantr put it well....

yea I have no idea how they got 400, base 2 doesn't land on 400. Maybe 256 + 128 chips and they rounded to 400? No clue, I'd be curious to find that out myself.
I bet that ~112mb is probably shared video memory or something stupid like that. Everywhere I read has said 400mb though.
EDIT: it's 512, with 112 reserved for something that is not identified. Check the first couple paragraphs.
http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/2011/04/01/xperia™-play-hits-the-stores/
A lot of people here seem a little confused on what the Xperia Play has in terms of memory. I'll do my best to explain this without insulting anyones intelligence.
So the Xperia Play has 1GB of app storage which is basically the equivalent of hard drive space that a PC would have. This is used in conjunction with the SD card to store apps. It's also the same memory used for the OS. So it has 1gb of this memory, but ONLY 400mb is usable because most of it is used by the OS and bloatware.
So where the Xperia Play had 1gb, the DroidX has 8gbs. So really the Play has crap for storage.
Then on top of that the Xperia Play has 512mb of Ram. Everyone knows what that is, so I wont explain that. But this really isn't different from most high end Android phones.

@tornlogic- The Xperia play has dual channel RAM which is first in class and provides 2x performance boost to normal ram. Its the quality that matters, not the quantity.

This is where people are confused. I said that the Xperia Play has 512mb of Ram which is what most highend Android phones have. And that's great! I mean the Bionic will have a gig, but who cares? So why would you tell me quality matters not quantity when I said that 512mb is fine and dandy?
Its the 400mb of user storage, which is NOT dual channel I have a problem with.
Think of the 400mb storage as the phone's hard drive. You can throw the sd card in the trash, and the phone will work just fine. You can still dl apps, save photo, documents and whatever your little heart desires without an SD card. Its all stored on the 400mb of space Sony thinks is a lot, but actually isn't.
Again, my DX has 8gb of storage. The Sony has 400mb. Both phones have 512mb of RAM, with the Sony having dual channel RAM, NOT dual channel storage. Clear?
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
Lol, see now I was the one confused, I have seen the 400mb number quoted as the ram on many websites, I think even engadget. But that makes much more sense now that it's 400mb free NAND after the system image. Something wasn't matching up right with the numbers.
Thanks for the info about the dual channel ram, I didnt know that either.

[Q] (Q)T-Mobile hd2 shows 403 MB RAM

I have T-Mobile HD2 with T-mobile logo and colored buttons. But ram size and device memory size shown low in hardware info. I have 2.0.8 HSPL.
Is this a fake T-Mobile..
Hardware info:
RAM: 403 MB
Device Memory:663MB
SD:14,2 GB
running android? all hd2's show around 400 - 411 meg ram when running android.
Also, the first 128 meg is taken by the graphics hardware, so it is only showing 40meg lower than expected, not 160+
Yes andoroid is running on it, I read about 128MB ram but still 40 MB is lost. and why device memory is 663MB . mgldr and clockwordmod is also installed , is it related with them. Is there a way to see the physicall memory from android .

What's your maximum available ram and how to increase it?

I'm only getting 1.58 GB and after the reboot my ram usage is like 1.31/1.58. I know it's 2GB device. So the question is why only 1.58gb can be used and how to increase it to 2.0gb? Anyone?
Cause probably the rest of the ram is used by core (not Android os) and hardware
Mine is 1.82 GB. Which is normal due to the conversion discrepancy between MB/GB.
1.82 or 1.72. Can't remember and don't want to look right now
The only way to increase it is by using swap. Either with an app like the rhoesoft ram expander (I think thats how it's wrote), or with a rom feature. But the ram you get with swap is not as fast as real ram. It will also degrade the life of the storage in that it is being stored. You can google more info about swap.
Are you sure you're reading it right? I usually have 1.2 GB ram free.
If you have 1.31 from 1.58 free then maybe you should consider uninstalling some apps. Cuz that's an unusual lot of ram usage

2000/1024 isn't 1.82. And I don't know why mine shows 1.5. That's a 300 missing. I'm on 4.4 tw.
It's just like HDD's. You buy one with 500 GB storage and when you set it up it shows only 480 GB or so.
And yes, samsung kinda ripped us off. 9 GB of internal storage is not 16! and 1.82 GB ram is not 2 GB! It's basically false advertisement what they are doing..
