Buying Galaxy tab tomorrow... how to root? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

I'm picking up my Galaxy on my lunchbreak tomorrow. I haven't seen a complete guide on how to root/mod etc..
Do I root first, and then install CWM? Does Galaxy come with 3.1 out of the box?I saw one that was Vanilla? I thought I wanted Gingerbread? Sorry for the stupid questions

There is a root/CWM thread in the dev section... Follow that guide. It comes preloaded with stock Honeycomb 3.1, with an optional Samsung Touchwiz OTA to come sometime soon. Gingerbread is the latest OS for phones, not tablets. Honeycomb 3.1 is the latest for tablets

Ya I meant HC, lol. So how come one of the OTA's in the dev section says Vanilla? And its root and THEN CWM right?

live in canada xoom still wont update

So my xoom is still stuck on 3.0.1 why wont it update? And is there a way to force it to?
Followed this guide for my canadian xoom.

I wouldn't expect the Canadian update any time soon. The google buyout seems to have put a hold on the android updates Moto was releasing for non-US customers. Just last week on the official moto forums we were told if we want 'early' access to it, we should sign up for their testing program. What does that tell you? Nevermind it's almost the end of august now.....
Rob
I!m in canada as well, just root and install the hammerhead rom that's around. I have a smoother device for it and have absolutely no regrets!
Some user on the official moto forums said the Canadian OTA 3.1 update is live now with working sd card support (r/w). I can't test, I returned my Xoom and got a Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Rob
Canadian 3.1 OTA updates are indeed live. My 3.0.1 Xoom just now offered to upgrade itself to 3.1.
"Your tablet has been upgraded to 64.0.20.en.CA version"
Yup mine just updated today. Crazy timing
were you guys rooted with tiamat kernel when you updated?
I got the update but I hit "later" to make sure I:
1) don't lose root
2) don't brick due to custom kernel
Any thoughts?

Don't try to OTA update if you are rooted/with or without a custom kernel. Being just unlocked appears to be ok.
The Tiamat ROM has been known to cause some issues with the OTA updates, but that is due to the nature of the device being rooted. A few members have experienced bootloader issues where the device will stay stuck on the Honeycomb boot animation.
When that happens, all you can do is wipe and restore. You shouldn't have to do that now seeing that both Tiamat and the official US ROM are now up to 3.2.
I'm not on the Tiamat ROM, I have the kernel only (3.0.1 official from google, bootloader unlocked, rooted and running Tiamat Kernel 1.3.2)
I should wait then?

I would say yes, don't do it, but if you want to experiment, just make sure you are prepared to come back from a soft brick.
yeah I'll wait I hate starting over... I'll wait for a patched update.zip or something!
Thanks (hey at least 3.1 for Canada is finally out... 3.2 is out for the U.S. and 4.0 is coming... geez)
Can't wait for 4.0.

I can confirm this. Downloading nao!
For those of us who rooted our device and want to update OTA, what are our options? If I wipe my device, does that eliminate root which will allow me to update OTA?
Any news on 3.1 Canada? I get a popup every couple of hours and I hit "LATER" everytime ... waiting for the right way to do it

Finally... Although I wanted it to be a surprise, after all the wait.
Tablet PCs Acer's A100 and A500 tablets getting Ice Cream Sandwich on April 27th
"With April nearly over, it's high time Acer came clean on when exactly its promised Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for the A100 and A500 would land. Today the company did just that, revealing that US owners of either tablet can opt-in for their frozen makeovers starting on the 27th. Bad news if you're rocking AT&T's variant of the latter though, as the listing on the company's support page for the A501 says "no update planned." Those not tied Ma Bell can expect Acer's skin -- including that ring launcher -- grafted onto Google's latest, much like the A200's ICS upgrade back in February. Already pumped? Go ahead and bookmark that source link. Do it, we won't judge."

Well, lets hope Acer has solved the Tegra driver issues that have plagued other devices running ICS like the Asus Transformer. We shall soon see.

I am currently running the leaked version of the 4.0.3 when it first was available. I flashed it so I have no root, etc. Now that the update is coming out, will I be able to flash right over it, or do I need to root and downgrade back to 3.2.1 to be able to update to the official 4.0.3? I highly doubt I will get a OTA if Im already running the leaked 4.0.3 right? Please advise. I ask because I cant seem to find the official 3.2.1 rom and a working link for the drivers and such to be able to downgrade it.

Huh? Seems that the leaked ICS roms for the A500 had no such problems with tegra 2 unless I missed something.
Cannot find a date for us in the UK or Europe
I don't know specifically about the UK, but I guess it's just going to be the same as for Europe.
For France the website "Les Numériques" said it's starting tomorrow until the 27th of april.
http://www.lesnumeriques.com/tablet...-jour-android-4-0-ics-en-approche-n24110.html
I don't know their source, but it looks that the update started yesterday for the A100 and when we look at the Acer America's planning there is a two-day delay between the A100 ICS release and the A500 ICS release, so it seems possible for it to roll out from tomorrow on.
ahahhahahahahaha!!!!!
Finally !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im now F*cking love you man for tell us about it
im sure that all the a500 owners are wait to long for it

Its very unknown what will happen. If you will even get a fota notice to update or not. then if you do get the notice will it install. will it fail due to unknown version. I WOULD SAY if you are pushed the update Proceed with caution. But if there is a boot loader unlock mech in the update as expected They may not do the data checking as in the past boot loaders..
SO The answer in short is NOBODY KNOWS Until its OUT.
Hope this lack of information is Helpful.

Sounds good to me. Not that the leak isn't any good, just would rather have the official if I don't plan on rooting anyways. I'll wait and see if I read about nightmares or sucess.
Thanks for your reply
I just read on twitter (@Acer_NL) that tomorrow Acer will start unrolling official ICS for all Dutch owners. Maybe some devs could look into this..

I remember my last update was from a link, not automatically pushed to my device. So as soon as an official update is available, I think no matter where you are, you eventually will get it. I don't mind to wait a month or so more, but a definite time table makes me feel settled that we will get that.

You guys know a lot more about this stuff then I do. Im only good at following instructions. Rooted many things and many custom roms, just not on the a500. Just the leak and that's nothing special as all I did was flash the stock rom. I'll wait to hear from the pros.

[q] rooted HC to ICS - how?

OK, I rooted my A500 towards the end of last year since it didn't seem like Acer was going to keep up with the latest Android operating systems.
I checked in here recently and saw that ICS has been released for the A500. Joy.
So, I used CWM v5.0.0.0(thor2002ro rev1.3.4) to try and flash the rooted Acer OTA ICS. I figured I'd try the original ICS before I start flashing other people's ICS roms.
All went well until the reboot. It froze on the ACER screen and would go no farther. I figured that perhaps the cache/data/dalvik didn't clear the first time so I repeated those steps. format data user reset, clear caches, clear bat stats. Reflashed rom.
Reboot.
Stuck at ACER screen again.
I searched the forums and found that I need a different bootloader? There are a bunch of threads, but I can't seem to make sense of them.
Can someone please give me a step-by-step plan to get this thing from where I'm at to ICS?
I did get my tab working again by repeating whole process but installed HC 3.2.1 Flexstriker r9.6. It booted up into the rom just fine.
I guess this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425 - is close to what I need but it's tough to follow with all the different options and colors/fonts...
Can anyone help me down the right path?
Thanks in advance.
You can flash one of Civato's old Flexreaper roms on a HC bootloader. Since it is an ICS rom you can just update the boatloader as mentioned in the thread you linked.
I would suggest flashing Flexreaper 9 or something, his newer roms require you already have the ICS BL on. After you update the BL then just upgrade to one of his newer roms. They work very well. I've personally had no problems at all with his roms.
but....
If you want the stock Acer ICS, you have to downgrade all the way back to the old 3.x unstable rom and let it update from there. It will take a few updates, but it should get you to ICS.
Sorry, but this is a development forum not questions and answer, xda is strict about keeping things organize, please read the rules and guidelines.

Any guide on this? I need it for warranty issues (charging stops after few minutes with power light flashing white / amber) Search is not working and there is no "going back to stock" thread in the dev section sticky roll-up thread.
The thought of going back down and then upgrading back up didn't appeal to me.. So, I bit the bullet and tried to make sense of the thread I mentioned... I managed to get through it and I now have the sandwich on my tablet.
What a pain in the.......
OK... ready for the jelly bean leaks now.

I did read the rules/guidelines..
It's a question about development (or at least how to use some developed tools), so I put it here..
If it doesn't belong here, then perhaps a mod would be so kind as to move it..
At this point, the thread really could be deleted as the original query is handled.
However, tkolev has added a question.

[Q] Is root available for Thinkpad Tablet updated to Ice Cream Sandwich?

I just got me one of these tablets, only had it for a week or so before an upgrade notification came through (about 1 week ago), so I did it and ended up with Android 4.0.3.
I was looking to root the device and came across this thread, however it seems to be all about rooting an earlier version of Android and being a noob here, I can not post to that thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459619&page=10
My exact model is a 183823M
Android Version 4.03
Kernel version 2.6.39.4-g9b8008b
Build number ThinkPadTablet_A400_03_0069_0121_ROW
EC Version V0021T00
My question is as per the title, has anybody successfully rooted, or working on rooting a 4.0.3 device?
Mike P
No love for Android 4 ?
Seems my post has had a small number of views, but not a single response.
Am I right to assume there is not much love for Android 4 then?
Mike P
Problem is there just isn't much dev support for our device. Right now there isn't root for Ice Cream Sandwich but you never know what might happen in the future. I never expected to see the second root exploit to come out but it did and gave root to a lot of think pad owners. Cross your fingers and sing the happy dance and maybe in the future we will see something.

Thanks for that reply.
I think I may have found some useful information at the thinkpadtabletforums.com under "Guide to installing OTA 3 (ISC4.03)
I am not yet permitted to post links to external forums, the message bookmark is #msg5501 if that helps.

I had rooted mine with the exploits for HC 3.0, and Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper worked for me upgrading to 3.1 and then ICS 4.0.3. I'm currently on build ThinkPadTablet_A400_03_0069_0130_US and am still rooted. However, I don't think there's, currently, a way to root on ICS if it wasn't rooted in the first place.

[Q] Upgrading to ICS or CM10 from Honeycomb

I have a US 32GB TPT running Honeycomb US0075/OTA1. It's rooted and has CWM and is running quite wonderfully. What's the least-risky way to update to ICS (I have to for some firmware thing, right?) and eventually to CM10?
