Poor 3G signal? - EVO Shift 4G General

Hola, I've had my shift since it came out and have always experience poor 3G signal. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I have tried the different radios posted in the developers section and i can never seem to get any higher than -102dBm for my signal strength.
I'm running the x99 stock rooted 2.3 rom atm. Also had poor signal strength on every 2.2 rom i ran

I would bet its safe to say its sprints network I'm going on 3 months of poor data speeds and all I keep getting is credits on my account! Its lame

What do you say to the sprint people to get that ceedit

tell them the truth they know they suck lol i been dealing with it too hell they sent me new phones to help but still poor 3g

One more annoying question from me, do I need to talk to the sprint store people or call the annoying customer service people. I basically don't get any 3G and almost no Wi-Fi if it wasn't for 4G I would barely be able to use my phone and at that I stay at about -100. Lmao

my 3g is off and on crappy, but mostly when I try to download stuff from the market... 3g will be illuminated, then when is says starting download, the 3g icon is not illuminated, and the download will just hang there! its super annoying, especially when things auto update, and it just does nothing! x99 rooted 2.3.3 update rom seemsa little better, but I noticed a huge difference when I switched to cyanogenmod, my downloads are a **** ton faster, for internet, and market downloads are 10 times faster!

When I call sprint I tell them their network is a joke and a feature phones faster then what their network is I also tell them that the ROMS on the phone lie and say 3G constantly even though the speeds are 1X and that's wrong of them to bold face lie I tell them all kinds of **** I guess it depends on how mad I am, I'm getting ready to send yet another email to sprints escalation crew and they bout to get it this has been going on for months

i read somewhere that sprint purposely left out the 1x icon so that people think they are always on 3g, even though its apparent when you are not getting 3g speeds! very sneaky

3G a bit slow lately?

Anybody notice 3G to be a bit slow lately? I used speed test awhile back and got 1.5mbps, now I get half that! Not cool.

Fluctuation in speed will happen. Try it again in a hour and see what you get. Did you run the speed tests in the same location.

Check your mobile internet settings. I just flashed cm7 and it has a couple of new selections...like international roaming, which was preselected. Also, it was preselected to roam on national affiliate networks. Since a lot of these roms are from people "across the pond" as they say, it will default to their servers. So, de-select those options and it will find a server closer to where you live. It is pretty kewl as it does switch to another network, but it is only 1rt speed, not 3G, so it didn't make my connection any faster. There are several threads out there on this about slow 3G speeds. I can only hope that with the 4G coming online, maybe the spectrum will open up to allow faster 3G speeds.
Lol glad im not the only 1 seeing this.. I was testing my connection in Germany yesterday LOL...
Tho even swapped back to the closest server (Germantown WI) , my speed still sucked..So I called sprint when I got home and told him my results compared to an ATT and Verizon phones while they were right next to me, and they were 6-7x faster then mine.
The CSR told me that its possible with northern Ill. getting 4G its working its way north into Wisconsin, and that could be affecting towers here while they transition..
Frankly I dont buy it. 2-3 weeks ago it was great, since then, 360kb is common. Also in the phone call I told him that I have no issues paying the $10 premium data charge, but if my phone keeps chugging along as it is now, I will be calling back since there is no way in hell I can take advantage of this "premium data" when I cant even watch a video on YouTube without constant pauses and other downloads basically crawling along.

I chatted with a rep last night and they gave me the whole "there are no issues" song and dance. Clearly with so many people noticing this in so many different areas there is SOMETHING wrong with Sprints network. Either that or theyre throttling their speeds thinking people wont notice.
The csr i spoke to said he was going to push something thru to my phone and I should reboot it..which I did..
I see somewhat of an improvement at home (I THINK theres a relay on the watertower near my house but im not sure) and its now about 1.4mb down...Tho most of my issues are when im away from home and not near WiFi lol
I really hope Sprint isnt pulling a ninja throttle job on us to ease up the network for all the new subs

Sprint coverage

So how do you like the sprint coverage in your area. My contract is up and att has better coverage in my area. Anything bad about att. There new htc evo clone is coming out soon.

If your poor sprint coverage is just a problem in your house you can let them know and they will send you an antenna that "piggy backs" off of your broadband. Will give you full bars in and around your house. But if your general region has bad signal a new carrier might be the answer.
What is this new AT&T evo clone you speak of?

Whatever coverage is best is what you should get. Company perks and phones don't mean anything if you can't use it.
As far as comparisons - Sprint is cheaper and has yearly upgrades. AT&T was just voted worst in every state in the US on it's network. Verizon is first, Sprint is second and T-Mobile is third.
The new htc phone is on att website. Its the same size as the evo with 16gb internal storage. It will also be able to use att lte whenever it rolls out.

You know I like you, I'm not bashing. But I have to ask.. Amidst all the discussion about Sprint changing their "Premier" program why would you, of all people, be selling others on yearly upgrades when that is available only to people who have the most expensive plans..
smh @ Sprint
OP- imo, Sprint is still the best service provider. If you get a spring Sprint signal then stock with them, just don't get your hopes up on that annual upgrade.

But it sounds like it is the Aluminum Uni-Body like the Desire HD which is pretty cool.
I love Sprint now that I have the Airave. When I moved to my new place, I had one bar if I was lucky, and it didn't make sense to walk out into the courtyard to make calls all the time. I just called to cancel due to lack of service, and was sent a free Airave. Set it up, and it's been the best thing ever.
OP, I just switched over from AT&T. My whole family has been on AT&T pretty much since they became a carrier. I've had their phones for at least 10 years. Loved my Tilt and Fuze to death but their service was horrible. My uncle has to drive 2 hours for work and would drop calls 4-5 times along the way. Since switching over to Sprint he's dropped none. I'd have the same call drop issue, even just sitting on my couch at home, no issue since coming to Sprint.
Also, just something an AT&T sales rep at a corporate store mentioned, AT&T is starting to worry about going out of business. From what the rep said, they're pretty sure most iPhone users will switch to Verizon once they get the phone. Mostly because of the poor customer service AT&T offers. Even the rep admitted that their way of looking at things was pretty much that they're the only carrier that offered the iPhone and could get away with the poor service since people wanted the phone so bad. Now with Verizon getting it, they're kind of SOL.
I don't know if the rep was just assuming things, or if that's something AT&T is truely concerned about. Either way, I won't be going back to them anytime soon - if ever.

Airave

Hey all,
So i just installed my Airave in my apartment, but I'm seing a lot of activity as far as the WAN light basically its rapidly blinking as if I Was making a phone call. Now here is my question... Can others beside me lock onto my Airave and use its signal? If so is there a way for me to block them out?
Yes,other people can use the airave. If you want to block them you have to call customer service. I believe that you can then give it permission based on phone numbers
yep anyone can. log into sprint website: click my devices: Update my air rave (on right side) :users: restrict accesses then add the numbers of people you want to be able to use it.
I was supposed to get an Airave but then Sprint screwed me because I get a discount for being in the military they said they will not give me one for free. Does it seem like you're getting a better signal?
Thank you guys
and yes, i get full signal, but mine doesn't allow me 3g, i only get 1X speeds with it, but I have wifi so whatever, also call quality is awesome.
no problem. and what? that doesn't sound right man... i would try calling customer service again.

Some versions of Airave don't give you 3g speeds, the earlier versions. A new revision was made recently that gives 3g, honestly i dont mind, i got my airave from my boss at work, he had it then canceled sprint.
The airave can not block phone numbers . I called the other day and ask about this problem and they said they can't fix it.also my airave also would set my evo to different time zone after 12 hours and my alarms wouldn't work.I have had mine off for a month now.but I get good signal now and don't pay for it anyways.

You can go to Sprint online and simply enter in the phone numbers you want to have access to the unit.
The way to test it is do a *99 from a number not entered and you wont get the message that you are going thru your personal tower.
Good luck

True but my neighbours have sprint so I wouldn't want them grubbing off of my airave
I own an airave myself and had it for a year now here's the deal; only 3 users can talk on it at a time meaning they don't even have to know there on ur airwave but once they make a call it will automatically connect. The problem with that is I live in a apt and people used to connect to my **** all the time and I couldn't use it lol. And even the newer airaves don't allow 3g its about 150kbps max on data correct me if I'm wrong. But I'm 100% positive about only 3 users at a time. Now here's the next problem, I believe the airave DOESN'T play nice with AOSP roms it only likes sense. Reason I say this is because on both my heroc and evo running aosp my airave had mad problems nothing would work right ; time zones, calls connecting and just wouldn't let me make calls on the airave. But on sense roms I had no problems whatsoever. Lastly, about locking your airave ;if you lock your airave on an aosp(vanilla, cm etc) it most likely will have problems. This is how my problem got started in the first place to where I came up with my theory. I tried to lock it so people couldn't steal it on an aosp rom and it wouldn't work at all. To make an already long story shorter lol if you lock it I myself believes it will only work on sense roms and that sucks for me cause I hate sense roms, so rock aosp then airave has to be open and people steal my airave so I still can't use it lmfao. Either way it goes I have one and can't use it lol.

I have also had 0 problems with MIUI, CM6, or CM7 while using the airave/airvana
not sure about speeds as I never use it for data, i always connect to wifi while home.
so it would seem that there are a few just laying around at people homes who aren't even using them? I'm assuming that Sprint gave them to the people who have them free of charge as they had initially offered me?
That just makes me hate the customer service over at Sprint a little more right now.
Anyone willing to give up the one they aren't using? lol
The Rep told me only 3 users can use my device at once maybe mine is older, I have the white samsung airave that looks like a router. Even in the manual it says only 3 users can be on it at once. I've had mine a little over a year. When I get home ill try to find the manual. And I SAID BASED ON MY THEORY NOT ANYONE ELSES, for ME it never worked with any AOSP out there WHEN THE AIRAVE IS LOCKED. Meaning only the authorized numbers can use it and it only works on sense when its LOCKED. why don't you lock it and try for yourself. I've asked about this so many times in the heroc forums nobody had anything. When the airave is open it works on any rom. This is my exp not speaking for others.

im using cyanogenmod 7 the stable version, i dont know if these speeds are suppose to be like this or if just sprint service sucks donkey balls. also my upload speed is 0.13mbps which is even faster than my download speed, happens sometimes. On my 4g i get around 4mbps which is pretty good cause i can actually watch youtube videos without waiting so long and lagging, the 3g icon is 1x, i dont know if its suppose to be like that but thats what mine is, on my stock rom its 3g. my prl is 01115 just updated like last week or the week before, i live in cali by the bay area. any help? or r these the speeds, or sprint sucks donkey balls

Stock roms do not show 1x. So you could just have poor signal. Where in the bay area? In southbay I am having no problems.

1X is not 3g so your speeds are fine for 1x. When you do connect to 3g let us know your speeds.

i live in like modesto tracy area. if you know where that is
thats my point, when i go to stock rom i have 3g, but when i flast custom rom like cyanogenmod i always get 1x for 3g. idk y.
I constantly get 1x in Phoenix using CM7, it is quite annoying.
i never got my cm7 to say 3g always 1x
AOSP and Sense show different signal strengths. Did you guys run a speed test when on Sense? And is it any different?
Honestly I think it's a problem with AOSP rooms like CM and UD. When I've used those I would constantly get 1x connection. I was in a 3G area being that the other phones on my plan would have 4G and 3G and the internet would be quicker. It's a problem with the ROM itself I think.
Edit**
I just found this in Q&A
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=898882
Like stated earlier, sense Roms will say 3g but it may really be 1x because sense Rom do not show true signal strength! Aosp does which is why you are seeing 1x with cm7

Yup, but not all sense roms, the incredible 2 shows 1x and 3G so is some sense roms, I'm on 3G at home and I just run some speed test and my download speed is 0.21 mbps and 0.15 upload so is really bad for 3G and I thought it might be my phone but I tried my wife's too (Epic stock) and she gets same result, I ma start going out of town soon, so I think I ma have to cancel Sprint, I wanted the nexus s but T-Mobile sucks too, att don't really like it, so I guess I ma go back with Verizon which is where I came, just don't one the thunderbolt cause all specs rather I wait for the galaxy s 2(I doubt it cause I hate Samsung ) or go back to iPhone in Verizon I don't want to but that's probably my last choice

No. Stock roms will say 3G even when you are on 1X. Do your speeds increase on the stock rom?

Double post
prl does not affect speed, only roaming
My speeds are horrible too. I'm in Indiana. It took me about 2 minutes to load a text only page today on CM7. I'm going to switch to a Sense rom for a couple days and try that out. We'll see how it goes.
The most I can get in Daytona Beach is .6mb download and .13mb upload

For the last TWO AND A HALF MONTHS Ive been *****ing at Sprint for this same reason of slow 3G speeds. When I got my EVO in December, I didnt have any issue pulling in decent 3G speeds at my house in San Francisco (I live in Mission District, and speeds were 900-1100kbps). I currently get between 50kbps to a max 300kbps. Sprint says this is fine for 3G and I say its not.
If you go to Downtown San Jose near "Almaden and Santa Clara" at times the speed will be 1100kbps-2200kbps, but even recently the speed has dropped down.
4G - forget it, it basically doesnt exist where the coverage maps claim. Sprint or Clearwire or BOTH are lying on that one. Where it does work, its slower than 3G in the areas I mentioned above.
Ive gone back and forth with test after test on my phone, reset after reset, visits to the store repair centers everything. Its got to the point Ive filed with the FCC and BBB and still no response from EITHER!
Im now looking at eating the ETF and going to small claims to recoup the fees and a MINIMUM of 3 months of the "highest priced data plan" Sprint offers due to them not being able to deliver what we both contractually agreed to deliver, yet I am forced to continue to pay for. They made out with the better end of the bargain, and that isnt what a contract is about.
So where are you in the Bay Area? Id love to get a hold of you and find out more about your debug settings so I can notify Sprint this isnt just a ME issue, its a network issue.

Just a random question

Was sprint version of 4g some sick joke that no one seem to get?

Huh? Do you mean the Wimax they puchased from Clearwire? It works well in my area when it's not down. About 5X faster than 3G.
I get good 4G in my area
EDIT - but don't really have a need for it
I have to agree with OP ... even when i can get 4g i don't use it b/c it's never been alot faster than 3g for me ...
I feel that when you make purchase like a cellphone you should do some research first. Especially about signal quality. Im not upset about the 2 mile radius of 4g I get in davenport, iowa. I knew it was weak. And I know that signal quality can drop alot by going inside a building or even in a car. I know from my experience that 4g in chicago and orlando has far exceeded my expectations. Either deal with it or go away. Complaints here wont make your 4g better.

My honest opinion:
It was a bold and possibly masterful move which serves to fulfill both a short and long-term goal.
In the short-term, it allowed them to lay claim to being the first US carrier to feature "4g". In hindsight this may seem trivial, but it had the immediate impact of gaining a lot of new and upgrading subscribers locked into 2 year contracts due only to the fact that they were the only ones around with 4g, and the idea sounded intriguing to many users. They of course had to have known of wimax's poor performance compared to LTE, but a company (clearwire) had already laid some groundwork so it would allow them a window to be the only one with 4g. That, combined with my next reason, is why I think they went with wimax. A pretty bold move by only the 3rd largest wireless carrier.
The long-term goal and the possibly masterful explantion deals with, of course as we've all heard before, the possibility that Sprint may convert their iden network (which is huge) to LTE. If/when Sprint officially confirms this, it should solidify my thoery. What I have learned here is that wimax and LTE can operate simultaneously on a device. This would be an ideal setup as a user can have the best of both worlds: wimax with it's higher operating frequency has the potential to have a higher data density, where as LTE provides much better building and terrain penetration with it's lower frequency. Should Sprint in fact decide to do this, they would near instantly have the largest and possibly most reliable 4g network.
This could also possibly explain Sprint's previously sudden decision to go with wimax when it had appeared they were dead set on LTE. It seems very possible that the idea might have popped in to their head back when all this debate was happening, and after crunching the numbers decided they could afford such a longterm plan. The fruition of this down-the-road decision combined with the boost they got in the short-run from being the first 4g carrier would decisively increase both their stature an their revenue.
This is, of course, entirely speculation and conjecture. But remember that Dan Hesse is no idiot.

Stupid double post
My 4g kills 3g. Two days ago I was downloading at just under 10000 Kbps, and I routinely get 6500-7000 outside and 2500-4500 inside buildings. This is easily 4-15x faster than the 600-800 I get on 3g. I can tether to my laptop at my house and stream Netflix without constant interruptions and buffering.
I cannot and will not complain about data speeds over 4g.
Please excuse any erors or typos as this massage was sent from my mobil device.

Same here. I find 3G almost unusuable since they basically launched 4G in my area the week Epic came out. 5000-8000 kbps download and a steady 1400 kbps upload speed. If you haven't had it yet then that's probably better because its worse to have it for a brief time then have to give it up

The only thing Wimax is faster than is ATT "4G" joke but ATT is still better because it's actually 3G that you can use all the time. Tmo "4G" is faster than than wimax and Verizon is faster than any other carrier. So other than wasting a lot of money that they don't have, I don't see why Sprint kept building wimax towers after they saw how poor the frequency was. And before everyone goes bananas with "sprint has truly unlimited" blah blah blah, that's not going to work forever. Their 3G network is so far behind all the other carriers and it's not getting any better.

Let's see if Verizon and T-Mobile's speeds stay that high as more people get 4G. Sprint sold a ton of Epics and Evos...maybe I am just making excuses
