Goodbye Moto, you suck & I hope we never meet again - Xoom General

I took delivery of my UK Xoom 3G on 2 May 2011 and fell in love with it. I knew it had bugs but I still loved it because love is blind.
I knew updates would come....I had a Google Experience Device so I just knew I wouldn't be left with a crippled device, so I kept on loving it.
Then 3.1 was released in the US. EXCELLENT I thought, in a couple of weeks we in the UK would also be shown some love by the mighty Motorola. It never came.
Other devices came late to the party and were given these mysterious software updates, my friends mocked me and my wife pleaded with me to get an iPad which would show me the same amount of love as I would give it, but I kept faith...I loved my Xoom you see.
Its now June 19th and Motorola have abandoned me, they refuse to talk to me and refuse to love me back, my poor beautifully built Xoom sits there happily force closing at every opportunity and I sit here pondering how my investment so full of promise has become a mere missed opportunity. How sad....Some relationships aren't meant to be and I for one will now be looking for a divorce. Bye Moto, I hope you can live with yourself
Sent from my Motorola Xoom 3G (now on Ebay)

I have a bit the same feelings like you...! I like my xoom really, but it piss me off that the NEW update policy of google only works in US well! Thats unfair, and this is one point why i would go to apple! Yes i have a lot of rules and things what i CANT do but i get allways software updates, for the next 2years / generations. And everyone gets the updates at the same time...!
And to Moto, Motorola should push google to deliver more update or make it like samsung to update apps over the market!!
For me at the moment, it was my first Moto device and the last one, maybee the last android...

I hoped you signed the petition floating around in here!!

Hay can you send it too me I would love to have a second Xoom. I see your selling it, oh well. Sounded like you should throw it in the garbage as bad as it is.
Edit:
My device works perfect I rarely if ever get FCs. My ***** is LTE. I understand that I am one of the very, very few whos device works perfectly. I don't know maybe its the user.

You're also in the US. Where we got the 3.1 update. So ours is working better than theirs.

Yes mate spot on its me the user who is at fault, I also take responsibility for the unfinished OS Google allowed to be released and the lack of any updates outside of the US ruining my experience with this device! All my fault

I knew you were going to take it that way because that's how people think. I was referring to me overclocking, unlocking and rooting. Having a device that I can play with and not one locked down. Thats what I mean by the user.
Let me ask you this:
Do you have an Android phone?

Let me also add this:
If you would have said that you were going to a Transformer or a HTC View then I would have thought it was the device. Instead you said a iPad which means its the operating system and using the device that you don't like. Maybe your Xoom is defective. Did you try getting it replaced?

Yes I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 and its amazing. I also had a Dell Streak 5 and a Galaxy Tab (original) so am very used to the Android OS. I did not say I was getting an Ipad, I said my missus wants me to get one because she feels its the best available 10" finished tablet solution at the moment....
I have considered the Asus Transformer but I need 3G and a 3G version is not available yet. The Galaxy 10.1 is also not yet available in the UK. I do not feel confident rooting and installing custom ROM's and to be honest I shouldn't have to go down this route to get a working product, especially one which cost me £580

Ya it sucks that other country versions of the Xoom suck so bad that is lame. We don't do apple in our house as a matter of fact we don't even speak of it. Also I did not root to fix problems I root so I can overclock and backup my device. So basically you bring that baby home turn it on and its FC city, wow.

If you like your Xoom so much why havent you done what lots of others have done, Root it and Load the US Version, I have to say though its still not perfect.. There are no good Office apps out there so its far from being capable of being used for business. Facebook App force closes quite regularly, the mail app looks a bit mickey mouse and basic. What I wouldnt give for Thunderbird and Open Office on it!!!..

Non-US Xoom is not Google Experience device, thats what I read in many Xoom forum posts. So, thats why you dont get update directly from Google. I read from Moto forums that it will be updated in couple of months.
Granted, thats not good enough. Couple of months is way too long.

If i'd known on the 2nd May that it's wasn't a GED and updates would be this slow, I probably wouldn't have purchased it. I don't think anyone knew at that point!
People keep telling me to root and flash US ROM, but as well as losing my 3g and voiding my warranty, I'm not sure I want to risk it and why should I?

I'd be tempted to mention your dissatisfaction on the Motorola Facebook page too. Perhaps a little naming and shaming will push them a little harder, other than that, it may give other prospective European customers a little insight into the current support situation?
http://www.facebook.com/motorolaeurope

hey you guys I just popped in here from the transformer forum, I would think that google is not at fault with OTA updates only the state of 3.1 at the moment. my transformer was on 3.0 when it arrived on the first of June, and an update was available straight away. Ordered in the UK and shipped to spain. Same with my desire HD quickly updated to gingerbread. Its a Moto Thing.
Just glad Asus have gone down the same route as HTC, Great design and features just need the bugs in honeycomb ironing out now.

Just done mine this afternoon. Now on 3.1 with SD card support and 3G. Like you say though, shame I had to void my warranty in order to get a working device....

It really is a shame that moto has gone down this route of misleading its customers. I have owned a few android devices over the past 2 years from different manufacturers ; however the Xoom is my first device from moto and will most definitely be the last one from them.
The only reason that the US Xoom has gotten the 3.1 update (which isn't perfect, but addresses many of the 3.0 glitches) is because its backed by Google (GED)
Many many people outside the US have bought the Xoom fully expecting it to be a GED and rightfully so. Seems that once moto got their money the relationship was promptly ended.
I'm not sure if this applies to you, but over here, the Xoom does NOT come with the Google logo on the back.. this seems to be the indicator as to whether or not its a GE.

What I really need is a simple step by step guide to rooting, flashing the US ROM and get my 3g working. Sounds a lot to ask but if anyone can help I would be really grateful and might convince me to keep it.
I've looked at some of the threads in the development section but they are a little complicated to follow

Some sad news on XOOM

So Koush on twitter just announced he is returning his xoom.
which ****en sucks, i hope he is kind enough to give us RM when the sdcard is supported.
and also reports all over the net today say the motorola will stop production on xooms in June...OF THIS YEAR
this all kinda sucks in the eyes of consumers (me + you) for software developers and even accessories. I dont know, maybe im kinda freaking but, it looks as though the motorola xoom is the nexus one of android tablets....i just hope it stays that way in the dev world.
Today seems to be a dark day for the Xoom community as well. All these bad news about the end of production, people canceling Xoom orders for the new G-Tab, now Koush leaving. But life goes on and I love my Xoom! After all, the Xoom is just the vessel for Honeycomb, isn't it? And as long as the bee lives we'll be supported by great developers
Hey Honestly,
Koush is a cool guy and he holds a ton of weight in the android community and I personally respect him and his talent, that being said I could give 2 ****s about what he or anyone else buys, never buys, or returns, and so should everyone else.
Personally the Xoom does what I need it to, and I like it. Some people will feel the same way about the Ipad 2, some people feel the same way about the galaxy tab, and some people feel the same way about Cheese. Out of all of us whos right? Every single one
If you like the Xoom be happy with it, if not return it. Simple as that. My only request is you dont post on here about how awsome your new device is because honestly you can go post that in the forum of the new device and it will not make people angry or sound like your gloating
The Xoom is the Nexus One of the Tab community, because with all of these new devices coming out who knows how much bloat ware or sense or blur or other crap they will have on them. Samsung for one does a totally steller job of providing updates for their devices (thats sarcasm) so I wouldn’t buy anything from them, but again this is my opinion, and someone may totally love their devices and want to catch them all (just like the pokemon) .
As for Motorola, what they’re doing is pretty standard. Think about it they probably have been producing units since Jan possibly even December for a early march release, a 6 month production run in a market where every week a newer shinnier toy comes out I feel is pretty standard.
Thats all just my opinion hope it makes you feel a little better tho And in the great words of Bob Marley, dont worry be happy

Honestly, I doubt this is completely true. It just says that they are stepping down production, and with good reason.
Things like this happen all the time in industry. You build 1 million devices, and then you use your manufacturing capabilities to build other things while you sell down the inventory, then you start pushing out units again once you get to another level.
All this means is that they are selling alot less than they are making, which may or may not change when the wifi version is released.

Wifi will give a price point that more people can agree with.
I'm anxiously awaiting my Wifi order to ship from Amazon.
Motorola showed us in the past that if they don't make money with their device, they quickly stop to support it.
Knowing the Xoom is running on an early version of Honeycomb, this doesn't look good at all...Makes me want to cancel my preorder actually...

I really don't care what koush buys, he bought and sold the galaxy tab 7" in the same amount of time.
If he really cared about the xda community his bootloader would be open source...if he stops making it someone will step in and make one.
Edit: I know he does open source the code, but I'm unsure if the xoom support is in there.

I just got my xoom for the GPS maps and the turn by turn directions. It works good for that so Im keeping mine!
This is really one of the major downsides of the Internet. It used to be that somebody could have a knee-jerk reaction to something, but by the time it filtered through editors, producers, etc., and into the print and publication media it had already been toned down and made far more realistic.
Nowadays, somebody misunderstands or misquotes something, and five minutes later it's believed as fact by the majority of the population, which has been conditioned to get information in tiny little chunks without any appreciation for context.

This development might put the remaing xooms in high demand. Whatever happens I bet they will sell out FAST!. I am glad I allready have 2 of them in my home!. You know what they say..... a bird in the hand is worth 2 xooms on pre order at Amazon! LOL
i FREAKING LOVE my xoom. I have an ipad that also and I never touch it. Go android!!!
android ftw yo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTUwqxHpXMY
i love my xoom too and im pretty content with it. i sold my ipad, two weeks before the announcement of the ipad 2 (robbed the dude on craigslist)
my main concern at this point, and i think its to a certain degree, paranoia, that the pushing up updates, dev community mods and improvements all together will be few and far between.
after typing that i realize thats nonsense, motorola sliced off at least 1-2months of shipping delays by delaying adobe, the sdcard and the 4g...just to be ahead of the pack.
whether that option was smart in the longrun is a question for the finance people. but as a android geek im good with that, just as long as developers (like koush) still have at it.
Thank god Moto priced the Xoom so high that I(and other sane people) got the ipad 2. At least I know that Apple wont just drop their product like that less than 6 months after release.

Are we going to be outdated before we are Dated?

I know alot of peoples stance on the SD card, Motorola never officially said when the SD card will work blahblahblah. I don't care. There are three major factors in why I chose the xoom, one it came out around tax time, two it had an SD card, and three it had a 4g upgrade in 90 days. Now the SD card, if anyone remembers correctly wasn't announced nonfumctional till within a week of its launch, I don't exactly know cause I somehow missed that memo until after I purchased my xoom. But regardless of what some people think about it, I expected it within a timely manner. Now with news of the xoom 2 hitting motors site during that slip up, I am to wonder whether our xoom will be outdated before its even got all the features I expected from it.now I know all devises get outdated rather quickly, but when i spent my 800+ on the thing I expected a good 6-12 month period before that would happen. With my lack of 4g and SD card running on stock, it looks like well be outdated when the tab 10.1 releases. Maybe not with a quadcore, or any substantial hardware, but with the features I bought my xoom for over 3 months ago. I do enjoy my xoom, and its bezel is far supirior to any other android tablet out there, but I want my damn features!

I think you have a right to be disappointed and even angry, because the way things are advertised these days can be very misleading. The biggest issue for you, I think, is the promised 4G conversion...that would be a big one for me. I got a WiFi Xoom only because I aready have a mobile 4G hotspot that works well for me. But I really do sympathize. Do you want to do some of the customizing (rooting/custom kernels...) that can make this a really wonderful device? Or are you trying to stay stock so that the 4G upgrade will not be problemmatic when it happens? Either way, you've got a great device. With Moore's Law and the manufacturers' desire for more and more money, no one will be able to stay on the bleeding edge of this technology for long. Try to regret less and have more fun with your Xoom. Just my 2 cents worth.
Motorola support
Motorola support is virtually non-existant. They are already selling the Xoom to discount retailers and it is selling on Ebay for $499 ( Wi-Fi model ).
The Motorola support forum is helpful as is this one. But be careful on Motorola.
I got banned for criticizing their lack of support and communication.

I'll be rooting, and I know I could now and enjoy more. My main reason for not originally had been to just make it past the 4g upgrade, but with that possibly taking another 90 days I might look into it sooner. All I really would be rooting for is the SD card, until icecream comes out and we can get some devs to make some custom roms, I really don't have that big a reason 'sides SD, and ocing. Are there any other benefits in doing so? I do have to read up on it all, cause the closest thing I did to rooting was jailbreaking the iPhone (which I did that from day one). I guess I don't really know the point of this thread besides to see if others feel the same, I mean I feel like I was straight lied too. People on here keep saying just because the SD card slot was included doesn't mean we should expect it, well that may be true for a 100$ device, but when you pay as much as some of us, it had better work, and damn fast. But I guess not, and I guess there isn't much that can be done about that. My anger isn't at the Xoom, I love this thing so much even at stock. It simply is directed towards Motorola. I wouldnt have been a hard early adopter to please, just my 4g, my SD, and with 3.1 my face literally would have stayed this way XD for days.

What happens is the Motorola fanboys gang bang people with negative opinions of Motorola. They are allowed to personally attack you, but as soon as fight back, Matt starts sending you threats of being banned.
Hell, between how I've been treated in that forum, and the obvious hardware design problems Motorola is having (see work-in-progress Xoom and the back-to-the-drawingboard Bionic), while wasting resources and time on turning Blur into Big Brother and locked bootloaders, I'm never buying a Motorola product again.

Let me preface this by saying I don't give a damn about Motorola...I followed a link to that forum once and one visit was enough.
However, I think the problem also resides with Google. It's clear that the Xoom hardward supports the external SD card, but for whatever reason, out of the box Honeycomb didn't. The development community enabled it straight away. The manufaturers all want to offer the best specs (and at least the Xoom is well built) but they are operating at the commercial edge of this rapidly changing technology. Still, if they (Moto) make promises they should keep them.
I don't care who is at fault or who is to blame. When you release a product that has features they all better work and i find this to be BS on both Google and Motorola's part! As for the 4G not being enabled withing 90 days like it was promised we should get something in return for being lied to! Maybe a free camera cable!
Motorola builds good quality products but the service and lies are by far starting to outweigh all the good things. If Moto keeps locking down things and going, in my opinion, downhill I will be forced to buy other products that are not of such good quality just to distance myself from all their BS!
As much as I like android and I hate to say this but if things don't change with Google, Motorola, and the rest of the Android manufactures I for one will be going to IOS.

How do you figure we're being "lied to"? The parts just ain't there yet- they didn't even- for whatever reason- pass FCC approval 'till very recently, and you're not gonna put an uncertified part on the air unless you wanna get your butt reamed by the Government (i.e., it wasn't gonna happen any sooner).
I'm sure there's some sound technical reasons the Mobicom/Sierra Wireless/etc. cards aren't/weren't ready yet, and considering how new LTE is, and how much battery the technology can gobble up if not properly optimized (and I can only imagine how much *****ing and moaning there WILL be when we finally do get the LTE upgrade ) I think we all should chill a little and be more patient.

I read your BS excuses and so many other excuses for over 3 months now, and the time where excuses matter is done.
Xoom is still a work-in-progress.
The Bionic went back to the drawing board.
Motorola announces Blur will now nag users about non-Motorola apps battery usage, which is hysterical, since the best battery savings move I ever made on an Android phone is putting a ROM with Blur removed on my Droid 2.
Meanwhile LG and Samsung both have LTE phones, and it's looking more and more likely that Samsung will have the first LTE Tablet.
Not to mention that Asus and xda both beat Motorola to getting a working SD card reader.
Sorry, but Motorola's incompetence is plainly seen, when not seen through the rose-tinted glasses of fanboyism.

Do you know for certain the LTE card that passed FCC certification last month is destined for the Xoom?

used to support acer...now?

I just emailed acer to stress to them (as if they care) my upsets. I own an acer netbook that i loved. It was a good product, never caused me any problems that wernt user error. When i saw they had a tablet i didnt even hesitate to buy it. I figured it would be a great product like the experience ive previously had.
When i saw all of the hate threads about the bugs and lack of updates i patiently waited by with faith on acer.
3.2 is around the corner and there is still no "official" 3.1 update for most countries. There are still huge bugs in the open with no official fix. This is my first android device, and im disappointed.
I will most likely be looking for another tablet. One with support from its manufacturer. The support from the community here have been great though, so thank you to everyonewho contributes.
I may hang on to this device a little longer and see what happens but right now im feeling like i made the wrong decision when i bought this.
I dont normally make posts like this but i just felt like saying something.

The 3.1 update is already released in many countries and others will get it in a few weeks. And to be honest, Acer told you that the update will come in late June, early July, so it's pointless to expect it any earlier than that.

This is my first Android device too, and well, I'm actually very happy with it. A few niggles here and there, but those are all Google's doing and they'll exist on all the other Honeycomb tablets, too. One can only hope Google puts some effort into polishing it.
Still, there's no way in hell I'm gonna let go of my tablet.
Unless you can return the device for a refund/exchange I'd say hold onto it until Kal-El is out. That hardware is going to be nice and hopefully Google will have worked on the code side some too.

Many countries? Please do show me. And hacked roms/ ports dont count, i never said i expected it before the release date (which btw has not been 'told' officially for the US.) But the fact they are this many weeks behind competitors is bad for their business.

Kal-El is the Tegra 3 chipset iirc. So not just any one tablet. Although unless Acer changes their bootloader stance I'll go with Asus' the next time around.
Patience is a virtue
wait until 5th july to start be upset.
and you expect what more???
for the price and the quality really!!!! this tablet is far better than some others all things compared... depends what you need.
I bought 2 tablets and 2 phone from ACER the same month. and I am purely satisfied with what I got.
I do not expect perfection at the first release... wait for the A100 or the future Iconia Tablet.... I think that will be something really awesome.
This is not the right attitude to have on xda!
Very few tablets have gotten 3.1 and none of the manufacturers has released it world wide.
Today we got the 3.1 update (unofficial) and the 3.1 kernel.
It is by all means a day of joy and the bootloader barely makes a difference. We got clockwork anyway!

What Bec said -
Had my tablet for two weeks now - used vcache's thread in the dev section to get the most recent OTA upgrade - rooted with modded Gingerbreak - removed bloatware apk's (and backed them up) and spent a couple days learning about the system. Thanks to xda - my tablet is able to pick up on a ad-hoc wi-fi network hotspotted from my cheapo VM Samsung Intercept (25$ USD a month for unlimited 3g - cannot do much better then that) - and I have perfect video playback for watching movies on the go (assuming I take the time to convert those pesky 720/1020 .mkv files to something the a500 can hardware decode).
16 gb internal storage - 32 gb on my microsd - 32 more gb on a USB stick I can plug in - this thing runs like greased lightning! Running the 144.07 official Acer version (as far as I can tell - early releases of 3.1 for this device do not yet support hardware decoding for video - i have been away a few days and this may be outdated).
Again - patience is a virtue. In the meantime - have you made sure you are running the latest OTA version and have you tried rooting your device and trimming away some of the fat? It is literally a 10 min fool proof process - the only thing you need to remember is to keep a safe backup of any system files you remove. Once Acer updates with another OTA version - you simply restore the system files and update. Very simple.

I i think I came off to strong. I don't hate this tablet. The device itself is great, and being a first time android user, I already like it more than ios.
And honeycomb 3.0.1 is not a bad firmware.
My beef is with Acer, maybe I was just expecting to much from them. And maybe they are slow to the gun for good reasons we/I don't know about. I just think as a company who is in direct competition with motorola and Asus they should be more responsive to what's happening around them. But again this is my opinion, and I know you all will have yours,
And I don't have an attitude directed at xda as a couple of you seem to think, xda community has done nothing but provide support and advice when needed. The short time I've been here I've learned a lot from many of you, so thank you. (Excuse my typos, my soft keyboard keeps force closing some reason)

Have you checked out the OTA update thread in the dev section and made sure you are running a updated version? If anything - patching to the latest OTA dramatically improved my browser experience.

I'm happy with my Xoom and with motorola

Hi. Just wanted to start a thread to counter all those complaint threads about not having everything we want from the xoom. It seems that about half of the Xoom threads on this site degrade after a page or two of posts into complaints about how either motorola or google is failing their customers. I for one am pretty happy with my xoom. I understood when I got it that this is an early adopter situation, and that the kinks are being worked out. I don't mind not having 4g yet; most cities don't have it either and, really, I can't think of anything that I need it for (that 3g isn't sufficiently quick enough to handle). I don't mind not having an SD card since I really don't want to spend the money on one that will significantly increase the 32g that's already in my xoom. I don't mind that motorola missed their deadline; kind of hoping they'll put together some package to thank users, like a free peripheral or some kind of upgrade discount to the xoom 2. I like my xoom, even though I still use my laptop more. I don't think the 3.1 update was that great, so I'm not sure I get all the non-US users freaking out about not having it. I just think we need to calm down, take a deep breath, and enjoy this new tablet experience. This tech stuff moves pretty quick; but our collective ADD is going a bit crazy with expecting a seven-month-old tech to be everything we want and more; getting angry that there's new things out that cost less (really? suprised that the first one cost more? come on now...); flipping out over not having perfected hardware.
If you agree that the Xoom is a great piece of tech, comment below. Please don't comment if all you want to do is complain about motorola or google. There's plenty of other threads for complaining.
Me too!

I completely agree. There is always a cost for being an early adopter and there will always be something newer, cheaper, etc. on the horizon. I am very happy with my Xoom and am using it more and more each day. I hardly ever turn my laptop on at home anymore.
You post on xda and still don't have a working SD card reader?
well, his nickname suggests he's a slacker. lol. just joking.
but slack, I'm glad you loved your xoom. as do I. but I recommend rooting so that you can at least work around some of the issues.

Agreed. There is nothing my xoom can't do that I expected it too when I shelled out for it.

Sure the Xoom has its shortcomings, but doesn't almost every device?
The fact that it's a Google Experience device keeps it at the head of the pack for me, honestly. I just wish we had more correspondence from Motorola updating about the LTE and microSD card updates.
Then again, now with Google Music and Plex, I really don't need that much local storage, so the microSD card affects me less today than it did before Google Music.
I have since sold my MacBook and use my tablet for browsing on the couch or bed. Sure, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 looks great, but it has Touch Wiz, and it came out 4-5 months later.
Thanks for this thread. It's nice to read positive comments with all of the complaining going on. I've been happily surprised by the Xoom...the build quality and hardware potential, the OS and the smoothness of use, the the apps, the wonderful kernels and roms from our developers, all have contributed to a great experience. I do wish that some of the apps that were available for the Xoom before would be available again. The Xoom has replaced my laptop and I use it all the time.
the only things i really want are a bluetooth + keyboard compatability fix, and netflix.
I am quite content with my xoom as well. I agree with pekosROB that Motorola could communicate with their customers better but that is my main criticism. (In reality I can't think of any android manufacturer who communicates with their customers as clearly as I would like. Ah well)
Cheers
Well lets see, 3.1 adds support for a bluetooth mouse and USB host capability. Those two things alone make the update nessescary. Theres rumours of 3.2 coming out within the next few days and the rest of the world doesnt even have 3.1. Since your in the states you have the 3.1 update and soon to have 3.2 so you don't really see the point of everyones argument that doesn't have the update, all we get is a *soon*
I love my Xoom as well and yes I knew what I was buying, the problem I have with Motorola and as many many others have is they announced an update to 3.1 soon , In Canada that was over 2 months ago, then rumors of Xoom 2 start, then 3.2 is mentioned it could be here within days and the world outside the USA doe not even have 3.1 yet, then the 3.1 roll out starts but very slow and it starts in Asia, so yes many people ticked at Motorola, and yes I still love my Xoom, even though it cant do yet what it was promised it would or could do.

Hail Motorola! You can do no wrong. And even if you do wrong, I'll make believe that it's greatest thing since the invention of breast implants.
By the way, I like my Xoom, I just will never by another Motorola product again, because Motorola's support of their work-in-progress Xoom has been incompetent bordering on negligent.
After releasing their incomplete Xoom 4 and a half months ago, to beat the iPad 2 to market, completing the Xoom should have been Motorola's first support priority.
To me, lack of actions speak louder than excuses.
It's over 4 months now, and all we have to show for our wait is nothing, nada, zilch!
And that's also describes the future relationship between me and Motorola....nothing, nada, zilch!

I'm also happy with my Xoom 3G.
I am pretty happy with the Xoom as well. I rooted mine minutes after buying and haven't looked back. I have SDCard support and can't recall ever really using it outside of flashing ROMS. I don't see what the big deal is about a SDCard when you have Google Music, Dropbox and Plex. 32GB of storage is more than enough for books, magazines, apps and games. I think when Moto does release the SDcard update, people will realize on a tablet with 32gb of storage, SDcards aren't really needed.
My only gripe is that Google and Moto have not done enough to get app developers on board with Honeycomb. Google has a great platform to build on. We need a bigger selection of Honeycomb apps. I don't think simply dropping the SDK and saying "Here you go guys", in a keynote is going to bring on the Android adoption. Google may want to start adding some financial incentive to some of the really talented iOS devs. Hardware alone won't sell these tablets. Great apps are what draw people from one device to the next.

I'm very happy with mine. It does everything I need it to do. It has offloaded a great deal of work from my work laptop. I now do personal travel only with my Xoom rather than carrying the laptop and all those peripherals.
I will be happier when I can use my SD cards. I will be happier when we go to 4G. However, I am not going to dis the Xoom or Motorola for my buying a product that many of you consider defective. I did my research and knew what I was getting.
I love my Xoom, nothing is wrong with it. However, Motorola really needs to get in gear. I understand early adopting, but promises shouldn't be broken, whether 4g lte is a necissary upgrade or not, after the 90 day promise we should have been greater not only with a reason for the failure, but also an expected timeframe. We are just left to sit and wonder. Its not even like i feel like sending my xoom in for a business week, but its something they used to advertise the tablet with, which means it should have just happened when it was suppose too. I dont know if it didnt because of 4g radio shortages or because motorola decided to put the time and effort into more money making products, and thats the problem i have, i dont know why i didnt get it. And about the SD card, I think we all know that won't be fixed till icecream sandwich, so whatever.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
agree too. but for me 3.1 was a big improvement.. atleast for speed n browser... no more fc
Me tooo...of all the android tabs out there as far as build quality goes xoom is on par with apple thing is bulletproof. Also that fact that moto hasnt released 100 different verisons of its tablet says a lot about the company Xoom is there main tablet focus until the new stuff comes out. Not like the other that have a 10 7 9 5 inch tablet. I think some folks complain to complain. No device is perfect but xoom is pretty damn close. Only thing missing are a few more local case choices.
my xoom has replaced my laptop for most everything, besides the most power hungry tasks. While I'm in Canada and still don't have an official 3.1 update, lets be honest here..... who hasn't impatienty waited for official android updates in the past? Waited for close to a year for my hero to be upgraded, my liquid e was 8 months, oh and my galaxy s? That took forever too. I think all we can do is thank our lucky stars that sites like xda exist, and that such talented devs work so hard to bring us all the roms and upgrades we need before even the manufacturers can

Shafted by Motorola!

Motorola have been promising Australian Xoom WI-FI owners an upgrade to ICS for a while now, to be delivered on Thursday June 21st.
Right up until yesterday the info was the same, so did we get it?
Of course not, they shafted us!
They released WI-FI and 3G ICS to Telstra, their biggest Australian customer, and told the rest of us they have no idea when we will now get it.
They even trot out the old rubbish about the WI-FI version being tested by carriers, as if we are all stupid.
I predict this will seriously reflect badly on Motorola, with many people on Facebook letting it be known that they will never buy from the company again.
Motorola, you blew it, big time!
Hence I moved to custom roms sometime last year. I was sick of delayed OTA updates and the like
They claim to be on Facebook all day, from 9am til 6pm, and have been every day, until today!
They sneaked on at 9am, posted the bad news, and haven't been back all day.

Couldn't you change your regional settings and receive the update? When I ordered my first wifi xoom, I received it and it had the singapore install on it. I then google'd how to change to USA, and it took me all of 10 minutes. Once I rebooted, it automatically updated.
Just a thought.
Hi, I'm looking into turning my Xoom into a GED, like the US ones, but I need to be in the mood, as I'm quite a n00b at these things, it also wipes, which I wanted to avoid.
http://www.simonjstuart.com/2011/07/23/gedify-your-non-us-wifi-xoom-for-n00bs/ this should be.what you are looking for deanbilly
Thanks Tech, that's the one I found, I'm just plucking up the courage to do it. :good:
I know how you feel, here in the UK we also receive absolutely no support from Motorola, all owners still waiting on the ICS update.
Go drop the GED image on it, I did.
... and steer clear of buying any more Motorola products unless you move to the US.
I too was waited for ages and was let down. A question if you change regional settings do you lose what's on your tablet? Same question when you update is it a clean install or does all games/app data stay on?? I have never upgraded tablet or android
I feel for you, man, but on the other side, it can't be as bad as it is in Brazil. Motorola here is simply absent. They give no feedback, no suport whatsoever.
A few weeks ago I called them inquiring about the ICS upgrade for the Xoom (3G, MZ605), and whoever was on the other side barely knew what ICS was.
Prior to the Xoom, the last Motorola device I had was the StarTac Elite, back in the 90's, and that was one great phone. I had 3 Motorola phones in a row back then. I got the Xoom based on that experience, and the only reason I don't regret it is because I've taken the plunge and gone ICS 4.0.4 with my Xoom (EOS Nightlies 79). If it was up to Motorola, I'd be sorry I got that device.
Seriously People..... Shafted by Motorola.....You're on XDA FFS. This is not really the place to have this sort of discussion.... Have you read the Samsung Galaxy Tab Forum, Full of people whining about lack of manufacturer support, Please don't take the Motorola Forums the same way.
I can understand your frustration, eagerly awaiting for an official device update only to receive what looks like a "shafting" from motorola......but again, WTF are you at XDA for if it's not to customize your device with the shiny new toys and all the info on upgrading, changing to a GED/US Version and getting said update etc are contained to in these forums, most are noob friendly.
If voiding the warranty etc bothers you than you're probably in the wrong place, Screw the Warranty, Screw the manufacturer, they've already screwed you. It's your device don't rely on them for anything after you've bought it, they've already had you're money and it's already an obsolete device to them......Interestingly lets not forget who owns Motorola! (although that's just Trivia)
Not to come across as a complete A*hole, here's the guide/update I used last to take a UK WIFI Xoom to ICS.... I don't even know if Motorola have released ICS on WIFI in europe, more to the point It doesn't matter/I don't care, I've had ICS since December on the Xoom.
With regard to losing all your data....Yes It will wipe your device. Here's what you do
get a good backup program, one that backs up the individual databases.
Sync your contacts to your google account,
Backup your apps to your google account - than it will download them all when you sign back in after update.
Backup the device fully using a nandroid backup from recovery then if anything goes wrong you can always return to that.
Sorry If this comes across as "Stand-offish" and don't take it personally after all I'm just some guy on the internet It just needed to be said as I've started to notice a few threads like this, for something that isn't an really an issue we have everything to workaround this.

Who the **** are you to tell me, or anyone else, what I should post here?
It's people like you who ruin this place for so many people, why can't you just do your thing and mind your own business?
i understand the frustration, im also using mz 601. install custom rom is not my thing. but what i dont understand why motorola took so long to update to ics. and why asus user doesn't have to wait so long to update hence asus is not using stock pure android.
