Thanks SamSprint! (words I thought I'd never say) - Epic 4G General

So, I don't post too often, but I lurk a lot and like to think I'm pretty experienced with different ROMs. I've used Midnight, ACE, Bonsai, Frankenstein, and a few others. All of them pretty great in their own way. The devs involved are dedicated and brilliant and when you think of the base they were working from, they did nothing short of dark magic. I can't wait to see what they do with this amazing release.
Today, I'm officially back to (rooted) stock. Here's why:
The things I look for in a ROM are battery life, speed, and stability. I think that's a pretty standard list for your average XDA member. EF02 meets and exceeds every item on that list.
First for foremost is battery life. I see that some users are reporting atrocious battery life and some (like me) amazingly (ridiculously good!) battery life. I've been using the phone almost non-stop for 5.5 hours now and I'm still at 58%. That's with some netflix, Rdio streaming, calls, tons of txts, Doggcatcher through the main speaker at full volume, and endless configuration, installs, and tweaking. I'm coming from Bonsai which has some pretty amazing battery life, but it's (seemingly) geared more towards "standby" battery endurance and always drained quickly when I was using my phone a lot. I thought this might be a fluke, but I've rebooted twice now and battery stayed within 2%. All I did was plug in over night and ran battery calibration (the market app) this morning.
Other than that, everything just WORKS. GPS locks stupid fast (after clearing a-data state). 3g/4g. Almost no FCs. Wi-Fi doesn't disconnect. No volume stuttering. No bluetooth weirdness. Nada. It just WORKS!
I was playing asphault, Backbreaker football, and recording HD video today, everything was snappy and flawless. When you consider it's RFS, stock speeds, with bloat and no governor or scheduler tweaks I really am in awe of what the Epic has under the hood and how solid SamSprint have made this.
There's been a lot of contention about how to apply this. There's a flashable rooted/deoxed version out now, but just by nature of that install procedure, I think you're best to use Odin to flash the EF02 tar and then the CWM tar and then flash the su in recovery. Those are the steps I did and I'm running rock solid.
My setup:
EF02 Odin'd
Launcher Pro w/ twitter and gmail widgets (although TW was feeling great when I was tweaking the phone)
Rdio widget
Data and background sync enabled
Screen timeout 30 seconds
Wi-Fi on most the time
SwiftKey (although the new Swype is pretty great)
PS I flashed the zip version last night and had endless issues. Battery heat, no GPS, no audio, wonky data, and eventually a boot loop of death. Odin the way I described above got rid of all the issues.

Ya. Samsung... Thnx u skanky sweaty hog! U pissed with off with the delay on froyo. But u made it up with ginger. I was already convinced froyo would be the end. So thxs u hor.

I have to agree. I followed the OP steps myself as soon as it launched. I am debating on flashing the kernel out but will wait till something else is out. I prefer more app space so staying on odex for now. I have been removing bloat apps that I dont want slowly to ensure nothing is acting funny. I didn't have to clear agps o nothing for my gps to work properly with that set up. I am running ef10 modem.

JI6 - No LagFix, etc.

So, OCLF breaks the vibration on JI6 and while Ryan figures out the problem (I already gave him a logcat) I decided to remove it.
My verdict so far without running any lagfix whatsoever, stock JI6 and the stock kernel is that the phone is tons smoother than what it has ever been. If I didn't know better I could swear that a lagfix was installed solely based on my prior experiences before and after installing one.
Whatever Samsung did in JI6 really helped out. Now, if you run a quadrant you will still get scores within the 900s but that doesn't seem to have any bearing on how fast the phone runs.
I remember when running stock JFD that my phone would constantly freeze while even trying to wake it. Really embarrassing when trying to show off to your friends
Anyhow, so far I'm really satisfied with just the stock rom, although I do have root. My only problem so far is the battery. I believe there is something wrong with the modem that it drains the battery way too fast. As a test, I have been streaming Pandora via Wi-Fi for 2 hours. The battery has only gone down 10%. While using 3G, that battery would have been decimated.
So, does anyone want to take a wild guess at what Samsung did to make JI6 faster? The UI doesn't seem to have been changed and it is still RFS.

Uh....decimated? As in reduced by 10%?
Sorry couldn't resist. No idea what's different.
I was saying, that if I were using 3G the battery would have dropped well below 10%. The other day I was using 3G just to browse the web and the battery literally dropped to about 74% in 30 mins. That was when I was using Bionx 1.5 or 1.6.

So, is 2.2 on the Fascinate better than 2.1?

I haven't read too much praise about the 2.2 update. My impression right now is it's just nice to have the latest and greatest even though nothing really stands out.
So what do you like about 2.2 vs 2.1? Give me a reason to go through the process of flashing 2.2
My opinion so far: Not ready for prime time.
The recent drops of EA28 (Eclair DL09 Dailer Fix) and EB01 (FroYo update of unknown content) tell me that DL30 will not be the final release. My personal usage backs that up.
My main problem with stock DL30 is the battery life. It's quite frankly horrible for me. Even using tasker to adjust some things that should help save battery life, I can't get through the day without hitting the charger. I could go all day and end up plugging in for the night with anywhere from 35-60% left on my battery depending on what time I went to bed and how much I messed with my phone during the day.
I'm currently restoring my DL09 nandroid backup so I can wait it out.
If you need a reason, then dont flash 2.2?
With kernels and roms that support them yet to come, I dont find that much difference between 2.2 and 2.1.
Some people experience horrible battery life, others better or same (my battery is better with 2.2). Some experience a lot of different problems once they changed to 2.2 while others people experienced 0 problems.
I don't think anyone here should really be saying too much about how 2.2 works on the Fascinate (sans the people with EB01- possibly). The DL30 version is, quite apparently, a very rough version with lots of problems, so not an accurate portrayal of Froyo (and Kaosinate, I believe, is still running an older kernel with v4... and no JIT).
Just find stuff comparing Android 2.1 with Android 2.2, that isn't phone specific, to see why 2.2 will be better once our roms & kernels have a chance to mature. Anything Fascinate specific, at this point in time, will be highly implementation-specific, and not a good representation of 2.2.
DL09 - Stocke 2.2 leak - Superdark Rom
Exchange feature - company requires Android 2.2 Roms to use company email (+1)
GPS - Does not lock as fast with 2.2 (-1)
Flash (+1)

if you have to ask - do not flash

I've been doing a lot of my own investigations on EB01, and found something interesting about WIFI battery usage. First, there are lots of posts that tell you to change the WIFI sleep policy to "When screen turns off" or "Never when plugged in" in order to get back to DL09 type WIFI battery performance. However, even when I did this, I still lost lots of battery with WIFI enabled and phone inactive (screen off). I found that going into Location & security and disabling "Google location services" makes a big difference. With this disabled, I now get the extremely slow battery loss (< 1% / hr) when phone is inactive and WIFI enabled. Of course, if WIFI sleep policy is set to "Never", the power consumption goes way up. Note, in all cases, I'm leaving "Mobile data" enabled. Now then, GPS is another issue. Whenever I enable that, even though I have no background apps or active apps using GPS, it still drains the battery in a way DL09 never did. That I don't know how to solve.
Its awesome

My GPS is fine. The phone isn't as snappy as it was with the custom kernels on 2.1 though, and 2.2 is still buggy. Both issues are Samsung's fault, not our devs, though.
What it boils down to is that if you want flash, you have to upgrade. If you want your phone to run super fast and stable then stay on DL09 with custom kernels until FroYo matures.
Hyatt updated this morning. Everything seems better so far. Battery seems at least a little better. Gps locks just as fast if not a little faster. Overall everything seems to be far more fluid and faster.
Came from blackhole latest dl09 to superclean 2.3 eb01.

It's nice having Flash again. And I see apps in the Market that I couldn't on 2.1. And it's noticeably faster in day to day use. At the same time, it can also be "choppy". I can't wait for custom kernels to fix this.
2.2 is great... especially when combined with a Voodoo kernel. The only thing that I miss about 2.1 is Voodoo sound and maybe slightly better battery life.
Also having access to Flash and Adobe Air apps is great.
Just put EBO1 on my phone yesterday. For me the changes to the stock theme are almost reason enough. Just a lot of small ways they have toned it down a little bit. Plus lots of little ways it works better or you get more options.
I installed it to get better at flashing, and wanted more experience with different ROMS before OTA is released. I'm glad I did EBO1.
Today I'm going to start playing with it, loading accurate battery stuff like that and will most likely try super clean in the next day or so.
But if you are happy with your phone and there is no Froyo feature you want, then no there is no strong reason not to wait for OTA.

Ditto on all that. Coming from DL09 Super Clean with Voodoo, EB01 Super Clean without Voodoo was horribly laggy. After reinstalling Voodoo though, EB01 SC is flying! The few remaining lag points I used to have are now gone, such as the entering the helicopter view in LauncherPro, waking the phone up (pretty much instant on now, used to be a few second lag), etc. Also, the theme I installed added a ton of fancy animations, and I haven't noticed any lag on any of them. Whatever CPU enhancements Froyo brings are definitely an improvement.
The only real problem I have is noticeably reduced battery life (can still make it through a day at least, most of the time anyway). Oh, and I'm definitely missing the Voodoo sound driver. I had to crank the EQ in PowerAmp way up to compensate, and it's just not the same, since that increases audio distortion to audible levels.

Some issues with Nils business sense rom.

I am having some issues, and hopefully you all can help. Btw, I did try reinstalling it with a full wipe again. Anyway, the issues I am having is pretty fast battery drain, and my notification led doesn't go off when I get a message or text. What can I do to fix these issues ?
Thanks.
Help please
I have had my phone since day one, and I must be the only one who has neveer ever used the notification led. I seriously never paid attention. as far as battery, i found bus z to have fantastic life with ziggys 3/11 bfs wo havs, ocd to 1.114. Check your brightness settings, i run about 25%, and do you have gps on all the time, are you using bt all the time. this is the most stable rom ive ever used.

No gps on, no 3rd party apps, no bt on. I just re flashed and my battery was charged to 100% and it dropped to 80% while phone was on idle. What kernel
are you using?? Also are you on version 6.2?
I think the notification led is an issue with z roms, when I've flashed them in the past I use the app blink to get it working again.

I also am having very fast battery drain. I dropped brightness to 50% and I tihnk I have had GPS going all the time. I will fix that now. I also want to know should I be using Version 3.0 >>>> Download or Version 2.2 >> Download
I know that sounds like a dumb question but as far as dates go it looks like 2.2 is the latest.
It "doesn't matter" which version you use depending on what you want as both are essentially the same minus a few, subtle differences. Nils provides several battery saving tips in the first page of both roms.
Nils Business Gingersense 3.0 v2.2 is based on Sense 3.0 thus it is more resource heavy. I personally use this rom and notice more battery life (as with any rom I use) when I don't use 3g. Not everyone is in my situation but I'm a grad student and I spend a good chunk of time at home so I primarily use wifi and extend battery life.
Nils Business Gingersense 2.1/3.0 v3.0 is a mix of Sense 2.1 and Sense 3.0. It may be more toward you're liking if you can deal without several Sense 3.0 elements like widgets and rotating home screen.
What is it you do when you notice poor battery life? Also, ate you comparing your battery life to an AOSP rom?
Since I can't post in the dev thread yet....
I've had the ROM for a couple weeks with few issues. I am noticing problems with the camera saving pictures. Sometimes it's fine, other times the images don't show up for several minutes, then today, several never showed up in the gallery. Just looking through the gallery, sometimes older pictures show an error, or on some occasions, duplicate. The image never sharpens on zoom as it used to either. Tried a reboot and fixing permissions to no avail. Is there a known issue with the gallery in GB or with Sense 3 on these phones?

Big fan here, NilsP. Thank you!
Regarding battery life, I've been running this ROM for a couple of weeks and am getting good battery life, but I spend most of the day on WiFi (WiFi sleep policy = Never). I use the kernel included in the ROM and the stock radio.
Go in Settings > About Phone > Battery > Battery Use, then click on the battery graph. Check the line at the bottom that says Awake and compare it to Screen On. Your phone should not be awake constantly when the screen is off. If it is, then something is preventing your phone from sleeping. You can use an app like System Panel to monitor apps and figure out which is the culprit. This has helped me identify battery-hogging apps.
After flashing from 2.2 to 2.3 my available memory has gone from 130 to about 80 something. I don't know what i'm doing wrong here. Also I don't have anatase as an option in setcpu. any help errors be greatly appreciated. I love the ROM and can't wait to see 3.5.

I think the fast battery drain is not really the battery draining that fast. When I flashed this ROM, I had to wipe the battery stats and it slowed the drain amount down. At 1st I was losing like 10% every 10 minutes till I hit about 40% then it would hang there for most of the day. after wiping the stats it's a more accurate slow drain.

Hope this helps, if this is not the problem then it's because I suck, but it did help my situation.

Felt like sharing my experience..

Anyone running stock ec05 with the geno kernel? Decided to do this a few days ago. Despite the rfs, overclocked at 1.4 stable is giving me the best experience I've had yet. Also ran titanium backup and froze every piece of crap I found. My battery is amazing. Just yesterday I went 26 hours. For stock that's pwnage. Everything is extremely stable. Xda is the number one force closing app for me and it hasn't happened once. Everything is speedy and snappy even with rfs. And I dunno if its me but custom epic roms seem to screw up gpu drivers somewhere. Dungeon defenders is running better than it ever has at a smooth 40 plus fps. Scoring a 1300 in quadrant, 2700 in antutu. Here's my smartbench 2010 for kicks ) cheers lentlemen.
also found this weird battery snapshot I took of ef02 or something last week.

Roms aren't the answer for everyone. I kicked around going stock myself but the grip of the rom is too strong. I have been running the Urban Fury series' from CompKid and SRF 1.x.x. Haven't ran 1.2 yet and I doubt I will. Just doesn't have anything over 1.1 that I would want.
1.4 OC is very nice.
I have a similar experience with the GPU. Even though custom roms would give me better bench scores and overall snappiness, I'd get noticable lag and choppiness in some games. I've been back to stock for a while now and it pretty much runs every app smoothly. The Gingerbread leak was silky smooth and snappy, but after a while random reboots made me go back to Froyo. Between the game lag and clicks/pops I'd get in music playback with voodoo, stock has been the best for me even though there are several things I liked about a couple of the customs. I may have to give genocide another go around by itself rather than paired with a rom to see how it goes.
Ever since I nailed down what was draining my phone over wifi, I get excellent battery on stock. Went 30+ hours the other day with about an hour or so of display time on, and still had 25% left before I plugged it in. Most of the battery issues with this phone (from my experience anyway) is simply the phone not going into deep sleep properly, whether it's an app or in my case, something on wifi network. I have things like LP Facebook widget and weather syncs set to 3 hours.

What was draining your mini nuke over wifi?? Also app freezing is the ****. All drm and **** that drains my battery while in sleep mode is gone. Going to power cycle the battery and then give it a test run with the [email protected] 1.3 and 1.4 are awesome but require overvolting. Trying to go for amazing battery life here. Also running the phone @600MHz Compared to 1GHz you barely notice a difference.

[Q] My new experiences with ROMs

Essentially I am just posting this to get my count up so that I can post in the development section.
I have been using the Droid 2 since October 2010. 9 months is the longest time I have ever kept the same model. Prior to that the longest was 1 to 3 months. Even though this phone doesn't work perfectly, the length of time I've been able to endure its use says a lot.
I had my device rooted within a few weeks of acquisition. When the GB leak came out, I had it instantly.
I am still kind of confused as to why I was too scared to install a custom rom. My first rom was Liberty GB .8 And naturally it was AMAZING and EASY. I love the liberty toolbox. My battery life was insane! So many configurations and options built in! I figured if one rom was this great, why not try more...I then tried the latest APEX rom. To me, that rom seemed a little slower than liberty, so I reverted to liberty immediately. Only one known bug presented itself, and that was the adjusting of volume with a bluetooth device, the call would end. After a few days of use, I decided to take the plunge to the almighty Cyanogenmod7...
The installation process was really easy. I already had the sbf files downloaded from switching to the newer rooted GB leak. After sbf'ing z4 root would not work, so I just used the easy one click pc method.
Installing nightly updates every morning probably isn't necessary but that's what I've been doing. I gotta say, I can't wait for a stable release of this rom. I think that this rom probably isn't for the average consumer, and to definitely experiment with something like Liberty first.
There are a few things that aren't quite up to par with this rom (which will be fixed with time I know). The camera app on this rom is actually not that bad. I have gotten used to it. But I can tell that when I have it set on 5MP, that the picture quality is not as good as the stock app. The flash is also not as bright, and I have seen a setting to tweak that, just need to get around to doing it.
With Liberty, I was honestly able to make it 36 hours without having to recharge my device, and was using it heavily (gps always on, bluetooth connected, navigating, phone calls, texting tons, etc). However, with cm7, even with sync off, bluetooth off, and brightness set to low, the battery seems to just fade away, even after re-calibrating it. And yes I am sure the fact that the battery percentage is in the notification bar, that being able to see each percent, might have a little to do with it. Even with the governor set at 600mhz, and profiles with setcpu, still crummy.
Anyway, I am thankful to no longer have problems with my keyboard backlight, and having the ability to use wireless tether, and netflix. (And I don't want to hear any negative remarks about it, because I constantly use wifi when I can, and I rarely reach 1GB of data use). My phone now runs FAST.
Alright, only 9 more posts like this to go.
So, overall, you would recommend Liberty above the others at this time?
If it came down to battery life as the biggest concern, by far, liberty. Its pretty darn fast too. But if you have an extended battery and are able to endure a few kinks for a short time, then try CM7.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Speaking of, I went back to Liberty! May go to 0.9 but the changes aren't that significant. It was nice to be able to cm7>LGB without sbf'ing!
