Full Review of Atrix 4G

Hey all!
I've posted my full review of the Motorola Atrix 4G. Overall, I think it's a solid phone.
I compared it to the Samsung Captivate specifically, but also talked about HDMI-out, GPS performance, battery life, speed, etc.

I'm really looking forward to upgrading to this phone when it launches in the UK
I'm sure I read a review a while ago that implied that, when using the multimedia dock, it was possible to wirekesslt stream media from locally networked storage. but I cannot find it now
is there any way you could test this?

Unfortunately, I don't have a WiFi network to test it over (I'm connected via LAN) on video.
However, I have already tried out this feature, called DLNA, and it works seamlessly with Windows Media Player. You simply set up a shared playlist in Windows Media Player and then click on the DLNA application on your Atrix while connected to the same WiFi network as the server (computer).
It works well. My only gripe is that the Atrix cannot play back .MKV files.

But I took a screenshot of the DLNA application. Overall, fairly easy to set up.

I have a TV upstairs in the bedroom, and rather than run an aerial wire to it I was going to buy something like a Revo and set up media streaming (I have a couple of TBs of DVD rips on a NAS) Then I saw the Atrix + multimedia dock and it all became so clear

Many of the folks here are seeing average to below performance with the battery. But you have rated it as exceptional. Can you provide more details on your usage during those 16 hrs?

Nearly every topic you listed had negatives for the phone but you say its a solid device? Id give it 2/5 stars at best. Really disappointed.
The screen is horrible - cant even display yellow properly. Not to mention its pixelated and washed out.
Battery life is abysmal.
Really the only thing I found "good" with this phone, was the call quality.

Im quite sure the color issue is software related. This phone was rushed out the door, lets not forget. I also think the camera could be optimized better through software also. This phone is just an infant. If we can get some custom roms on it the future is sky high for this phone. Right now it feels like a beta.

I read your review and while it was thorough I do have one criticism, and it can be levied against pretty much anyone who has used an AMOLED device prior to the Atrix.
Everyone falls prey to the "Ohh shiny!" problem of the AMOLED screen. Oversaturated color is NOT accurate color. It's just like in big box retailers where they crank up the contrast and backlighting to make TVs "pop". My Blu-Ray player even has a "store" mode in the settings menu that turns on different lights and displays that aren't normally running just to draw your attention. If you had it setup that way at home you'd go insane (not to mention not being able to sleep from the light in the room). Just because it's bright and shiny does not mean that it's at all representative of the real world, and the average person just doesn't understand that.
Also, the picture you used in the screen portion of your review comparing the two phones has to do much more with the different screens' viewing angles than their perceived color reproduction accuracy.

Oh it doesn't feel like a beta maybe not polished but The Nexus S with 2.3 feels like a beta or RC;-)

I usually use the device every other minute while I'm in classes or at work. I surf the net, usually visiting my blog and other tech blogs. Then I check out Analytics applications. I also watched a full episode of The Daily Show during my test... which was the biggest drain (Flash over browser). I don't know how anyone could say battery life was terrible. Battery life on this device matches my iPhone... and it's better than the battery life on any of my past Android devices.

It might seem like every category was negative, because I was trying to be critical of the device and point out its flaws. You must remember that all of the categories are weighted more than others. Speed and processing power is more important than the lack of video codecs... for example.

Have you used the device? You really believe it feels beta? I'm pretty shocked to hear that. This thing is incredibly fast, efficient, and sleek. I'm loving it so far.

This is partly true. Over-saturated colors aren't accurate. It is also true that the angle of the picture makes the Atrix's colors look worse.
I did that angle for a reason. It was the only way that I could show how the two screens look side by side in true life. Every other time, the camera would balance the colors and the Atrix would look equal with the Captivate. The picture under the screen section is actually a very accurate view of the comparison between the two screens.

I understand the reason but it really provides a skewed view of the phone which is unfortunately a common problem in the media.
You must have a very sophisticated camera for it to compensate for different colors in different areas of an image. Mine (Canon Powershot S90) is only capable of adjusting white balance or hue/saturation/brightness/contrast over the whole of the image.

Canon Rebel T21. It's a friend's.
Not sure if it was balancing colors or if my lighting was just poor, but it wasn't communicating the major color difference when I took a straight shot.
I did include a straight shot with screens on in the gallery of pictures within the review FYI.
But, the color difference is much more dramatic in real life. Whites look more accurate on the Atrix. Other than that, blacks and ROYGBIV look way better on the Super AMOLED.
However, I would still buy this phone over the Captivate any day. The screen is still wonderful... and the resolution is useful.

[INFO] So far, I am impressed - I think ASUS has a potential winner, here

Early feelings, keep in mind -- I've only used the device for a few hours.
- IPS screen is wonderful. Beats out the Xoom and it's the first thing I tested. I don't have an iPad(2) to compare it with, but if my R10 is any indication the screen is probably similar to an iPad, at least the screen angles and color balance. Yellows are yellow, not a bluish yellow.
- 16:10 screen is the best screen for comics. Yep, I'm all about comics. Superior to an 4:3 screen (sorry Apple).
- microSD card actually works. Moto, you reading this?
- ASUS Reader supports epub. Drop them into the ebooks folder, and they "just work" (assuming no DRM, of course). Give me a night mode and this would easily replace Aldiko for me (and if there is a night mode, I just haven't found it yet).
- When you force Portrait mode, the power button is on the top. They got that right, they could have just as easily screwed that up, but they didn't. And I like the power button on top vs. in the back (Xoom).
- Speakers sound good, and are not in the back.
- It's aesthetically pleasing. I like the ridges on the back and the edges. And brown is almost a welcome change in a world of black and white. It LOOKS good.
- It's US $400 for the 16GB device. That's the most important thing of all. Remember, the Viewsonic GTablet was $400 until recently and that doesn't have a GPS, an IPS screen, a 1280x800 screen, 1GB of RAM or Honeycomb support (although it does have 32GB onboard). And the 32GB Wifi Xoom is $600. I think some of these tablet makers will need to take a long hard look at their price points as ASUS is about to alter the tablet market.
Is it perfect? Nope. I hate the proprietary cable, the lack of a real AC adapter for charging, the lack of a full USB port on the tablet itself, the problematic video playback (so far), and of course Honeycomb itself needs some work. And, unlike an iPad or even a Xoom, accessories are non-existent right now and even the dock and the device itself is as hard to find as an iPad2, right now. But, time should correct at least some of these things. I think this thing is going to fly off the shelves and today's insanity was just a taste of things to come - assuming some major defect doesn't manifest itself, of course.

I'll be mainly using my TF to read comics as well, so the 16:9 screen seems like a winner.
Robebeet, can you post some more screenshots of internal comic pages on the device? Also does it take a long time for the pages to load or to turn the pages?

16:10 not 9. Just didn't want people confused. I think 16:10 is going to be better when using thumb keyboard of swiftkey beta for tablets.

Normally I loathe proprietary cables as well, but I don't think you can knock them for this since it charges at a higher voltage than standard USB can accommodate.
That said... I think Asus would have a winner if the rest of us could actually get out hands on one.

How is the gps? I'm thinking of selling my xoom for the transformer if it matches the xoom wifi's gps strength or better.

It's still not as fast as I'd like, but it's because of the apps I use, NOT the device. I have yet to find the perfect cbr/cbz reader for Android.

The Xoom is not a bad device - but I didn't like some of the design choices and, at $600 for the 32GB Wifi, it's about to be overpriced. I think Moto is going to need to drop that by at least $50, very soon

The GTAB , Adam and Xoom have a separate AC port. So, I can charge it and connect it to my PC at the same time, with the USB cable. You can't do that with this tablet - you'd need the dock to do that.
It becomes annoying very quickly as you have to basically put the device aside and charge it. It basically forces me to buy the (non-existent so far) keyboard dock.

Correct. The GTAB is 16:9 and is too long for comics. And 4:3 (iPad, and my R10) is too wide. 16:10 is the sweet spot for comics reading.

It auto double pages - I don't see an option to change it (that's one bad thing about the app - very few options. I just wish it had a night mode. But it is FAST).

I got mine yesterday... Very pleased so far.
1st, the screen is awesome. Absolutely destroys the Xoom and Galaxy Tab. The iPad screen might be a little better, but not much. It's lighter than I expected, and the build quality seems really good to me. I know some reviews commented on it, but just think Asus netbook quality.
When I first started the device it already had an update. Not sure what it fixed. Very speedy using the web browser. Tried a few apps, then downloaded the game Samurai II which I had seen in some Honeycomb YouTube videos. Signed up for the Amazon App Store. Much nicer than the Marketplace, although it is a lot better than when I used it about a year back.
So far I'm really liking Honeycomb. I think this tablet is totally worth the $400. Can't wait until I get my hand on the dock. I put in a 16gb microsd and it works perfect. Also really happy there was 12gb+ free on the device from the start...
EDIT: Very disappointed Zinio isn't available on Android yet. I thought I read it was.

I purchased a USB 3 Cable that has the correct amount of pins needed to be used as an extension cable (Male to Female) with the Asus charger, so with a 2 meter cable i can now sit on the sofa with it plugged into the charger to get full charge whilst using the transformer.
Saves having to put it down close to a power point to charge it with the silly short cable that it came with.

I think we need a Tegra 3 for that. All these T2 devices are going to have this same problem, I think.
Hi-Def video is not high on my list of needs, so it doesn't bother me too much. If XVid AVI's work, then I'm fairly happy. But I would like to see it work, regardless. WMV's, for example, are broken - I believe the Xoom is the same. And I bet WMA's are broken too, just like the Xoom.

I think the Xoom's is better, but I have to test it more. I'm in my "man cave" and the Xoom GPS actually worked there. Not so on the Transformer. It also likes to eat battery life so I actually turned it off, for now.
EDIT: I went upstairs and it STILL doesn't work. I have this same issue with the Adam, but the Xoom is definitely better. The compass works, though.

Keep in mind that it may take 10-20 minutes for a new GPS to get it's initial fix and download the satellite ephemeris data, assuming a good signal. Once it has that, subsequent fixes will be a whole lot faster, unless it has been months since you turned it on and the data is too out of date.
I'm finding the GPS on the TF to be good, it works in my basement for example, where my LG Optimus will not lock on. I can't compare to the Xoom though.

I haven't been able to get my hands on this device yet. From what I can tell Asus sent out 60 total to retailers in Canada, so the odds were not good.
I am glad to see that Roebeet's on board. He's the reason I bought and enjoyed my Gtab. I'm also a big comic reader and have about 11,000 digital comics just waiting to be read on my TF, when and if I can get one.

Reading cbr's/cbz's on this thing versus the GTAB is like night and day. The GTAB used to give me a headache. I really am an IPS convert - I want to see the yellowing of the pages. Of course, I expect that when there's a 10 inch OLED or color eInk device in two years, I'll port over to that. But right now IPS is king.
Now just get me an Android device that has "smell-o-vision" so I can get that new comic smell, and I'll be all set.

Download Twonky. It is completely free, and with a strong wifi signal, streams content to Apple TV without problem.

I have rooted Desire and I just love Android, so I'm buying Android tablet for browsing web, watching movies and some gaming. It was hard to figure out which tablet to buy but I think I'll get Transformer instead of Galaxy Tab 10.1 as it is more functional. So it would be nice if you Transfomer owners could share some impressions.
How good is build quality?
How responsive it is?
How fast it is?
How good does it play 1080p vidos?
Does it work with turn-by-turn navigation?
And would you recommend it?

People have had issues with build quality but I personally haven't. My TF101 has been fine.
Responsiveness is top notch, no issues here.
Depends on what you're comparing it to, it's benchmarks are above the Xoom and Galaxy tab 10.1, but if this relates to real world performance I don't know.
It plays low profile 1080p flawlessly, and 720p high profile flawlessly. Don't quite know why you'd want to watch 1080p on a 750p screen though.

I myself have had absolutely zero issues, like seshmaru, but buy it 4m a store, and open and check it, would be my recommendation. Light bleed is the most common issue, followed by some creakiness issues and speaker balance issues, very rare though

Mine eee pad had serial B5xxxxxxxx. So far no issues with it.
But it's quite heavy to hold the eee pad with one hand and using it while laying on the couch.

I got mine like two weeks ago, and I guess I'm lucky that it's pretty perfect (although there's a slight creakiness on one corner).
I don't have any complaints right now, but I'm scared to get the dock because I keep seeing problems about it (battery, lag, what else??).

As has been said many times on these forums, it's more about not having to re-encode 1080p movies you already have just to play them on the TF.

I am on my 2nd transformer now, the first one had some light bleeds along with head pixels in the midldle.
The only thing that i suggest is to root it when you get it and throw Prime 1.4 and a custom kernel on it so you see the true speed of it. Im semi please with it, still better then the ipad 2 imo. there are some issues but should be fixed over time. the only really annoying issue is when typing in the browser and how long it takes to show up on the screen.

Then I'll get one. Actually after some googling on iPad 2 I understood that I really wont get one, Transformer has so much better hardware and I love honeycomb. iPad has 0.3 Mpix front camera and 0.9Mpix back camera, lol.

With all the issue pointed out here I was a bit worried about buying one. I have not had any issues except for bugs which are part of honeycomb. When I got my Galaxy S2 there were a lot of people *****ing about various issues but when I got my phone I had none of these so called issues once I tweaked things! So each to their own.
You'll find that most posts are about complaints. Very few people come online and say how awesome something is. Most of the time there are solutions to issues but people don't want to search.
1. I chose it over the Galaxy Tab 10.1. I like how light the Tab is but I love the dock and the extra features that the Transformer has to offer.
2. Build quality on mine is outstanding. I have had a lot of android devices and you can see the extra effort Asus put into the dock and the tablet. I don't have any light bleed or flex on my device. Even the USB docks have magnetic port covers. How cool is that? Keyboard is very nice and the keys don't feel cheap.
3. Very fast device and very responsive. Interesting to see how both the Tegra processor and the Exonys (in my S2) differ in different tasks but both are blazing fast (the S2 is faster at rendering pages on wifi vs the transformer). Make sure to update to 3.1 firmware. Mine came with 3.0 which was not very responsive and sucked [email protected]
4. No idea about the 1080p. It is touchy at playing high def files (honeycomb hardware decoding issue). My S2 plays 1080 no problem. I find 720p MP4 videos plays perfectly fine if encoded with the proper specs for the transformer
5. Yes turn-by-turn works great. I tether with my phone and off I go
My only complaint is an issue with honeycomb and the stock browser lag when typing. Also, no auto correction when typing on the hardware keyboard.

I have used the Transformer for couple of weeks now having previously owned the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 inch.
All in all, my impressions are very positive and I would definetly recommend the device. The screen's great, device is quick to use, to comfortable hold in hand thanks to clever backside texture and reasonable weight, overall design is good. The keyboard dock has been a true surprise, it is way better than in many laptops and the integration with the tablet is seamless.
My unit (Scandinavian) is faultless, no cranky build quality or light bleeds.
However, there are some things to improve
- Flash performance: Flash being the most obvious advantage over iPad, I was disappointed that my old Galaxy Tab plays Flash better than this Dual Core Honeycomb device
- Browser is a bit buggy (closes unexpectedly once a while)
- Lack of Honeycomb apps evident, no way to sort out Honeycomb apps from all Android Market offerings (not a Transformer issue, though)

I've had my Transformer for just over a week now and am absolutely loving it. I have had no problems with my Transformer apart from when I managed to brick it and then get it working again (my fault not ASUS ). The screen is great (though I wish it was SAMOLED+ because my SGSII has an amazing screen) and the build quality is very good - it feels a little heavy compared to an iPad but also very sturdy.
After updating to 3.1 the tablet is very smooth - with the possible exception of the browser when using the dock. Sometimes it takes a couple of seconds for the tablet to realise I'm typing something but generally not too bad. Using the tablet as a tablet (on-screen keyboard) there is no lag anywhere. Youtube 720p and normal 720p play flawlessly and look great. I haven't personally tried a 1080p video yet. Turn-by-turn navigation works well and it's nice they included a GPS chip in it, though you still need WiFi/3G for it work correctly.
The main attraction for me is the fact the Transformer is basically an Android Netbook! Good sized, clear screen with amazing battery life (I get about ~16 hours with Auto-Brightness and browsing/watching films). The best thing is when you root it and under/over clock it however! Under clocked to ~800Mhz I can browse for hours and hours, it's great! Over clock to 1.6Ghz and it's blazingly fast and everything (and can probably handle full 1080p video).
My only slight disappointment is in the rear camera which despite being 5MP is pretty crappy but it's not very often I use it. Bonus points for having Polaris Office and a Remote Desktop service packaged in for free which means I've been playing Portal on mine through my gaming laptop just for fun!

TF300T - Personal Thoughts And Why You Should Get One

Hey guys, I have seen many posts of people asking why should they buy a TF300T, what is good and what isn't, so I decided to create this post to share my personal experience with this device.
I bought this tablet back in July 2012. At the moment I had some money saved, waiting for something I like to pop up and to be able to buy it.
I've always been a kind of "techy" person. I have a desktop computer that I built myself piece by piece running Windows and Ubuntu (my favorite OS). I'm also familiar with various programming languages, on both OS's. At the moment, the only Android device I had (and the very first one) was a Sony Ericsson Xperia x10 Mini, all unlocked and running Gingerbread and full speed (I just loved flashing ROM and tweaking my little baby to the top). At the time I though tablets were kind of useless... After all, they are just extra-big Android phones that people just use to show off and which only purpose was to play silly games and visit Facebook, having to pay an exuberant amount of money just to buy them.
I was aware of the existence of Transformers - I liked them from the first moment
I set eyes on a video-presentation - but they were just too expensive.
One day I was surfing on an online shop and I found TF300T. I couldn't believe what I was sawing. A quad-core Transformer, 32GB of internal memory, 1GB of RAM, Ice Cream Sandwich, and 500€... Dock included. It was cheaper than an iPad 2, and had a dock with an extra battery and USB port. Not to mention SD-card's and HDMI. Some days later watching reviews and thinking about playing with ROMs, Java and HTML made me decide: I was going to buy a Transformer!

The first impressions
The first time I used this tablet was magical. Everything worked as expected - it was fast, and the dock was just like I expected it to be. The tablet just felt good in my hands. The rear camera is amazing, at least in my opinion: great image quality. The screen has amazing colors and is really snappy (although it is kind of a fingerprint magnet).
Although it was good, there were some problems with it: browsing was extremely slow (in the beginning I didn't noticed this much because it was my first time with a tablet) and apps kept force closing, which was kind of annoying. Well, nothing that couldn't be solved with an custom ROM: but that would have to wait some time. There was also the problem with I/O. Transferring files with the cable was a pain in the ass: the only way I was able to transfer files to the device with efficiency was using Airdroid.
ASUS, the mighty ASUS
One of the things that I really liked (and was surprised by) was how ASUS handled its devices. Let's start with the software on the tablet.On my x10 Mini, Sony putted a lot of crappy software on it, that had nothing that other apps on Market couldn't do, filled the device internal storage/RAM and that were just annoying. They didn't even included a file manager, one of the basic things all devices should have! But that's not what happens on my TF300T - not at all. The tablet came with a super-useful-and-user-friendly-and-awesome file manager (that I use until now), a complete Office suite, an app for taking notes (one of my favorite from ASUS apps) Supernote, and app for backups, for locking other apps so nobody could open them without a password, Splashtop (watch me using Office and playing games on my tab), an amazing swipe-able keyboard with a super-friendly layout, among others. And the wallpapers! One that changes according with the time and weather, another with the battery juice, and one for slide-showing all your photos.
And now, the support. ASUS is the best regarding software updates: we were the first tablet having JellyBean, not to mention regular updates. And unlike Sony, ASUS seems to care about its older devices. Also, ASUS releases the source code of their ROMS: a developer dream.
ASUS also released their own tool to unlock their devices, making the task really easy. And, besides all their warnings about warranty, they still honor it if its proven not to be our fault to damage the device.
Unlocking, installing custom ROM's, Developers, Kernels
After a couple of months using the tab without any hardware problems, I decided to unlock. I read in the forums about some people that weren't able to unlock it, but everything went smooth. Reading instructions on the forum with extreme care, I was able to install TWRP in minutes and get a new ROM installed.I couldn't believe how fast my tablet became. Using CleanROM / Hydro / CM9/10 without a custom kernel proved to be like a miracle to the tablet. I can't explain how much has changed, you can only tell by using it before and after. It was a HUGE difference.
A few days ago, I decided to try a new kernel. I read a lot about untermensch's kernel and decided to go for it. The tablet just went from perfect to heaven-like. I can now reproduce 1080p movies WITHOUT ANY GLITCH AT ALL! It's just so amazing!
This tablet also has a big level of development, New (and good) ROMs keep appearing, along with mods and kernels to make our tab even better, if possible. This makes me really happy about this device. Of course, if you have the 3G version of the tablet, you probably won't be so happy. The development for it is almost nonexistent.
Camera
The 8MP rear camera of the tablet is awesome. It has a great image quality. But what really make me love it was the fact that it takes pictures so fast and is able to capture perfectly "things moving". Bellow you have a photo I took on a cyclist competition. I also would like to advert you to not go and take pictures with this beats at a public event like I did if you don't to end up with lots of people staring at you.
The video recording is astonishing. It records at 1080p and has perfect image quality.
Games
I'm not so much of a gamer, but all the games I tried to play with it ran smoothly and fine. Of course I don't play "hardcore" games, I prefer to stick with Cut The Rope, Angry Birds, Granny Smith and so on.
Once I installed GTA Vice City just to test it out and the game ran pretty well. The dock helped a lot when playing (specially for cheats )
Battery
Having a second battery on the dock, and being big, this tablet has a huge battery capacity, and can stay turned on for days with average use. Here's a print of my battery usage stats using CM10.
Final thoughts
If I didn't buy a tablet and was to buy one now, I would definitely buy this tablet again. It can do anything and even more. In the beginning, when I though that a tablet was useless, I was SO wrong. I ended up downloading torrents, playing lots of games, browsing every website, taking notes and lots of photos, even office stuff like spreadsheets. I pretty much do ANYTHING with it. It's so portable (because of its battery), flexible thanks to the dock and it's software and so stable. I take it everywhere I go (even to the bathroom - that's one of the things this tablet to best - take the place of a newspaper :laugh: ).
That's all I have to say about my tablet. I hope I helped you decide if you should or not get one TF300T. I'll keep updating this post with thinks I did with my tablet and maybe some hints. I would also like to thank all the developers that helped making this tablet such a marvelous device. Sea! :angel:

Reading comic books?

I've seen conjecture that the 12.2 should be great for reading comic books, but has anyone done so? If so, can you relate the 12.2 comic reading to the 10.1 experience? Have had a Toshiba Thrive for nearly 4 years but time to upgrade. Comic book reading (especially getting an entire page on the screen at one time with large enough text to read it) is important to new purchase. Thanks for feedback.

Yes, actually I got one two days ago and I'm still wondering if I keep it or not (don't really need a tab). One of the things I did meanwhile was reading comics. I read several of The Walking Dead comics using the free version of ComicRack, holding the tab vertically. This was one of the few things so far where my 5.5" Note 2 really didn't com close to being useful.
The size is just perfect, very crisp image, really good. You can read the whole page perfectly, using 100% of the screen. I used the volume up/down buttons to skip pages so almost didn't have to move at all.
The only problem is that it is a bit heavy to hold that way, but I guess even a 10 tablet would be, or an 8. None is as comfy a a book. Still, the reading experience itself is excellent.

This is my 3rd tablet, which I primarily use for comics.. I have about 10k comics that I store on it.. I started with the Ipad (which I never liked because of the screen shape), then the Transformer, and now this.. and I am in love.. With the Transformer I had to use a rooted app to use up the entire screen.. That's not needed on this..
The day I got it, I put the same comic up on my 12.2 and 10 inch and what a difference.. Brighter, the text is a little crisper and it gave me that little bit of size bump that I've been wanting for the past few years.. Scrolling the Comicrack menus is super smooth and fast..
I'm not sure why I see so many people saying how heavy this thing is.. After reading some reviews originally, I was worried.. But the 12" is just as heavy as my old 10" It's really not heavy or awkward at all.. Unless you read your books while walking down the street I guess..
For me personally, who owns this just for comics, It's as perfect as it gets..

Thanks to you both. The note 12.2 is only a few grams more than the hefty Thrive. Even though I unlock and root everything, I really don't worry about this device because my son doesn't care. He chose an iPhone because of some music syn. app but didn't even want ipad air because of comic reading. He'd never consider any computer but Apple. For a tablet, it's android. His brother (also imac and macbook pro) says his android N4 provides more productivity for his needs than his iPad 3.

I also had a Thrive, then a Voyo A15 to read comics...As soon as the 64 gig version is available, I am getting this. I also appreciate the comments above...it seems like this is the tablet I have been waiting for. I might just wait for the LTE version just for the Snapdragon, though. I can't wait to read on this thing!

The size is almost a 1:1 for comic book size. I took a photo of my NP12.2 with an actual comic book over the screen and the screen is slightly taller.

It's easy to read a comic full page with no zooming/scrolling. Even two page spreads are readable in landscape without much zooming/scrolling needed.
I find the comic reading experience is supurb. (Im using Comic Rack). The screen is just beautiful! Perfectly sharp, colors are vivid and nice inky blacks.
An obvious downside is ephasized when you hold the tablet in portrait... it's heavy! Holding it too far toward the bottom puts the full weight on your hands. To me it's a minor gripe... everything is so nice about this tablet that the weight is an easily acceptable trade off.
For extended reading you'll want a reader with good tap controls to prevent a lot ofawkward balancing-while-swiping due to the weight.
Now I pretty much don't want to read comics on anything else.

If the price was $500 and it was marketed solely as a video viewer/comic book reader, i would tell people to run to their closest store. Reading comics on the note pro 12.2 is the best experience i've had on a tablet. No need to fidget with zooming, just read and swipe pages. Everything is bright, colorful and crsip. The weight is not that bad in my opinion, it weighs about the same as a ipad 3.

I had a Nexus 10 before this and both so far has been great for comics, so whichever you get, the Note 10.1 or the Pro, you should love it. For me, larger is better, so the couple of inches does make a difference.
Also, with the $25 Google Play credit you'll receive, get the full version of ComicRack. Best reader out there.

The screen is great and the few graphic novels I have through the Kindle app look outstanding in full screen, it's just a damn shame that the marvel unlimited app is bad and only utilizes half of the screen. Really hope they fix it, but I'm not holding my breath.

Isn't the marvel unlimited a derivative of the comixology app? That app works fine for me....

Marvel unlimited is the app for the subscription they offer to their back library as well as comics that have been released a few months back.
That comixology app worked fine, but the unlimited app just doesn't use the whole screen. Not even close, actually. Pretty disappointing that the regular marvel app works properly and the one that requires a subscription of you to use doesn't.

I was absolutely shocked at how poor the marvel unlimited app looked on here. I'm really disappointed and hope this gets fixed soon as this is a perfect format for the app if it functions properly. I can deal with the bugs that the android version has always had, it usually just requires a few extra clicks to load something a second or third time, but having the scren size look the same on 7 inch or a 12 inch tablet is too much.
Out of curiosity, what other sources do people use for comics? The marvel unlimited account is my only experience with digital comics and I'm enjoying catching up on series that I haven't read in 20 years but I have a hard time seeing people paying $3-$4 per issue for new digital comics. Is this common? or our there other types of subscription services that people use?

Me, I use comixology and the dark horse app. Comixology's higher definition comics look amazing on the notepro.
