best settings for CM7 for battery life? - Nexus S General

I've been playing around with my NS for a month now still i can't get more than 1 day under semi heavy use (ebuddy 24/7 - average 10 msg, 50 whatsapp msgs, play a few hours of games like angry bird, wifi and bluetooth off, 3g and data constant on)
I've heard people suggesting use wifi whenever i can and use things like juice defender. But i'm starting to think does it have anythign to do with the kernel (since i'm just using the stock one), and i saw something on the CM7 Nightly board about "UV to suggested volts within the app (saves battery)" which i have no idea what it is. I've also seen post saying the ADW Ex will also boost battery life anyone can confirm that?
Any suggestions as of what settings are additional stuff i should get on top of cm7 to boost battery life?
Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere

If you can get a few hours of games in, that's pretty amazing. I think I can only play Angry Birds for like 2 hours before it hits the 30% mark.

Battery life on CM6 RC2 vs FR007 vs R12

Give me your opinions?
I've never used any of the liberateds, but overclocked at 825 on RC1 and RC2 I get a day out of my battery give or take depending on use
Got any battery saving settings besides the normal obvious ones?
Honestly the only thing I do to conserve battery is not leave the gps and wifi on when I am not using them. The only thing I purposly do to save battery is underclock when I am running low on battery while I am at work, for instance.
I am running CM RC2, and I am overclocked to 806. I have been paying attention to the battery the last couple of days, and it seems once it hits below 50% it starts going down even quicker. I have it set to On Demand that when it hits 50% it drops to 400. I was sending some texts, just texts, and it dropped from 45 to 39 in less than 5 mins. I'm going to test again tomorrow and take some of my widgets off of the screen.
Granted, I do have my screen on at 100% all times, and I listen to music half of the day during work. Things that I am not going to do during testing.
I cant use CM for some wi-fi reasons (thread @ aria android development forum). Anyways, I use Liberated and I get estimated full battery life 27½ hours (with wifi, sense sync, facebook and twitter always on.)

And how many texts and phone calls is that with? I guarentee if you sent more than 50-100 texts and made about 15 calls each about 5-15/min ea you're battery wouldn't last near that long LOL!
Let's face it, this thing SUCKS the battery life!

I don't know what qualifies as "sucks", but I have no issue charging the phone every night. As long as I get a full day out of it, I'm happy. It's not like I'm doing anything better with the phone while I'm in bed.

What would you consider heavy usage?

I know a lot of people brag about great battery life, getting 20 hours or so of life, but really, unless you have a godly battery, I doubt with heavy usage you could get more than 6 hours of life.
I'm asking for opinions here, because I get about 2 and a half hours of Display usage before my battery dies.
Is this about normal? I'm sure the signal plays a part, as I average around 92 - 100 dBm signal in my city, which I know isn't very good.
I turn off my 3G whenever not in use, I have display set 30% brightness, auto-sync is off, gps, bluetooth, and sometimes I put the phone in airplane mode when signal is weak.
My point is, even with all the battery saving tricks, I get about no more than 2 hours and 30 minutes of Display usage, regardless of whether I'm playing a game or using the browser.
Running CM7, with Conservative, min 245, max 998 MHz as well, stock kernel.
What do you guys get?
Hit up the sprint CS chat. Complain about battery life. Ask them if they can comp you an extended battery. Took two tries but a csr refunded my battery purchase in full. In my case I bought first then asked for refund. Worst case you could just return it
i get about 3 hours screen on with stock and double with my chinese extended battery.
they're both more than enough for a full day. i dont see how i would be bored enough to be using my phone screen on for 3 hours in a whole day anyway haha.
i think some people consider playing music for a long time a "heavy" use of the battery which in my opinion isn't true. playing music barely drains anything when it's on for a few hours even with 3g.
but yeah i dont think the stock has enough juice for screen on more than 3 or 4 hours. i get 20 hours usage frequently but that doesnt mean the screen is on the whole time. in a day i probably play half an hour of games read news on the bus for 40 min to and back. read some news browse the web during lunch and listen to music throughout the day.
My opinion. About 100 texts, 15-20mins of angry birds 4G on, lots of web browsing. That's heavy usage.
With stock battery I get about 5-6hrs of heavy usage. On Myn RLS5 with #15 kernel. Moderate use (4G off but wifi on, no angry birds) I can get about 8-9 hrs with stock.
mmm... i dont use 4g so can take that out. I send about 300 texts, web browsing games all that stuff. get about 4.5 hours of screen on.
Heavy use to me is prob checking Facebook and twitter at least 3 times an hour. Receiving 2-5 email an hour from 2 different accounts GMail and Exchange. Playing Angry Birds, The Sims 3 and Bistro cook around an hour combined for all of these.
Reception at my job is not that great so I get around 4-6 hours if I am using it a lot. If I turn off the 3G when im not using it then I can get much more life out of my battery.

bad reception = crap battery
My 'heavy use'
usually everyday I have work which is 4-6 days a week.
Over 350 texts a day (incoming and outgoing)
3 hours total gps/navigation
about 20-30 mins of total talk time
oc'd to 1.228ghz
about 2.5 hours of 4g ON
gps on entire time
live wallpaper always on (nexus revamped pro, fps is at 32, speed at 150)
used multiple apps (psn, xda, mx moto game, setcpu, 7 widgets total)
use flashlight app on high settings for maybe 1 min total time
screen brightness is always at 100%
I get anywhere from 7-9 hrs total time unplugged, I usually have about 10% left when taking these numbers.
I bet I could get a pretty good number if I underclock and turn auto brightness on.
My heavy use:
Get to work at ten
browse almost nonstop
text in between
youtube a few times
...on the charger by 2
Like someone else said, low reception kills batts.
3+ hours a day of Words With Friends.
Guilty as charged!
I get 4.5 hours every day of listening to Mike and Mike in the morning on the new ESPN radio app. I also check facebook several times...and get a few texts. But im sure the 4.5 straightforward hours of streaming is what does the damage.
I stream Radioio.com on my phone for about 5-6 hours a day while I'm at work.....I have the extended battery...and when I get home, I have to toss it on the charger Good thing I have unlimited data....

I assume the bad reception must be the worse offender to my battery. I wasn't complaining or anything anyway, I was simply curious.
I have the stock battery, and 2 extra batteries for heavy usage. I primarily use my phone at work, as sometimes business is very slow and I rely on my phone entirely too much for entertainment.
I've been told my usage is moderate to heavy:
MikFroYo 4.5
MS79723's SBC #15 v7
Slayer's Cyan Dragon Theme
4g always on
gps only on when using Foursquare or Maps, otherwise off.
200-300 texts
5-10 minutes of phone calls
1/2 to an hour of angry birds
half a dozen feedr news widget articles I'll use the browser to read
30 minutes of general web browsing
Check e-mail several times
check calender once a day
Stream some music on Subsonic (only when I'm in the car but I have a car charger so I don't count this).
Check fantasy hockey leagues three times a night when there's games on
Check facebook/update status many times
Sometimes I'll use wireless tether and there's a chuck norris app I'm fond of, but that's not everyday. The kernel undervolts, I don't keep my screen on unless i'm doing something and with the SBC I get normally around 12-17 hours a day if I don't tether or dilly dally too much. Since I have a car charger and I charge at home when I'm in the shower or sitting at my desk, my phone rarely drops below 50% on my average day.
If I were in an office, I'd connect the phone to charge to my computer and the car charger has been invaluable. I highly recommend charging it whenever it's just sitting there (even if it's streaming something).
That's how I get through my day

Almost 30+ hours == EC01 + SuperClean 2.9.2

I again wanted to say thank you to all involved in making the Fascinate the best phone it can be.
I have instantly noticed a considerable battery life improvement using this radio.
Just thanks.
And juice defender doesn't hurt either..
You must not be using your phone at all, mine only gives my around 7 hours.
Really? Only 30 hours? My white fascinate could go for 3 days with light usage and 2 with moderate. I bet you it could last for 4 days if I didn't do anything but text or call people. Oh and don't use battery apps, they don't do crap honestly. The only thing that kills your phone is games and the screen being on. But if you use your stock Froyo task manager then you're good.
I am confused a little but mostly dissapointed in how people report usage and battery life around here. I think for the most part it is simply a result of how subjective the term "use" is defined in all it's various "states". For instance what I consider "heavy usage" might be beyond what a lot of people would consider to even be reasonably expected. On the other hand you can have another person who thinks using their phone once for a few minutes every hour is heavy usage. Some seem to be reporting standby time like it is normal usage, which depending on your definition could be true. Some people seem to be obviously "lengthening" their "epeen" for some unknown sad reason which is the part that is dissapointing.
I can say, once, I left mine on after using it all day Friday, set it on a table at home and I can't remember why but I didn't touch it again till Sunday afternoon. It literally only used a few percent battery life. This is abnormal usage to me. This might be "normal" for some people.
Some people like myself are device addicts. I don't go anywhere without my phone. I rarely make calls on it. I rarely use my powerful desktop for any casual pc use like web surfing, IRC, listening to music, personal gmail and work email via exchange. I do all of that on my phone. My day consists of picking up the phone fully charged at 7:30am, at work by 7:45, and then once in my cube the headphones get plugged in and between voodoo sound and power amp I get pretty lost in the tunes. All the while I am getting constant email delivery notices. I probably look something up on my phone a few times a day. It is on wifi all day at work and home.
Once home I stay on it after dinner....once the kids are away, the wife and I sit in the living room and she on her laptop and me on my phone we kinda watch shows together while surfing or whatever. So hours of constant use in the evening. My screen is on a lot because I don't go long without doing something on it.
I have recently been getting around 14-18 hours if I run it to dead on the 2.9.2 + latest Voodoo sound enabled kernel floating around but was on eb01 radio. I flashed ec01 radio tonight hopefully to see better battery life but there's no way in hell I would be expecting anything close to 30 hours or days!? Not unless I laid my phone down and walked away for a few days, then sure. I consider myself to be a fairly heavy user.

In my case Syn Ack is right about the screen. This past weekend I gave my phone a real test. I put EC01 on, got rid of most of the bloat and left the phone in that state. Didn't install any extra apps that would run in the background. Only had 1 home screen with nothing on it but a black wallpaper. The phone looks boring as ****. lol
From what I saw, the only things eating battery was having the screen on, a small bit of time with no signal, followed by android system and any other apps I may have used which didn't make up much compared to the screen.
I love the screen, but it's like a high maintenance girlfriend. Its sucking the life outta this phone.

That's pretty much par for the course. The screen is always the biggest battery drain in any phone out there, out of any piece of hardware in any phone. Trying to keep the screen's brightness as low as possible, and it off whenever you don't need it on, are probably the best things you can do to improve your battery life (followed by deleting crappy widgets like the Facebook one that keep your network up constantly).
Then again, I set my screen to have a 2 minute timeout, because the 15 or so second default way too often caused the screen to turn off on me while I was reading something and I generally use the power button to turn it off when I'm done. I figure, as long as I can make it till night, that's good enough for this phone 95% of the time (the other 5%, I can generally plan ahead).
I honestly don't see poor battery life as in issue for this phone.
Mine will last for 3 days of extremely light usage, 2 days with light-ish usage, and if I hammer on it and play some games, 14 hours or so, it'll beep at me.
IMO, this is not an issue. I have seen the battery life increase with the latest updates (OC Kernel from imnutz, SFC2.9.2, EC01 radio) - and I was happy before.
I also don;t think that you can really count on what other people see as anything but a hopeful ballpark figure. We all know that each of the phones HW is a little different. We all know that our setups vary greatly. We all know that we use the phone differently.
So, hoping that something will be a be all, end all guide as to how long your phone will stay powered depends on so many variables that you have to tweak it for your use.
FWIW, I run live wallpaper, 7 screens and use OC steps up to 1400 and I am very pleased, dare I say impressed with the life I get out of the phone. I also keep a spare battery fully charged - I guess this helps me care less and just ooh and ahh when it lasts more than a day.
Mine gets 150 hours...... Turned off.

With the phone sleeping (screen off), my battery drops at MOST 2% per hour. I don't use but a couple of widgets, Facebook and weather. My sync time for Facebook is 1 hour and weather is 2 hours.
For me, when I was referring to my 2-3 days of battery life:
Light usage (3 days): a few phone calls a day, < 25 texts, no internet, no market, no games, no battery control apps except using Task Manager wisely.
Moderate usage (2 days): regular phone calls, < 50 texts, some internet, maybe a game or 2 but not for long, Task manager.
Heavy usage (1.5 days): regular phone calls, texting all the time, heavy internet, games, rom flashing, playing music a bunch.
Super ridiculously heavy (1 day): phone/text/internet/games/music, all nonstop heavy usage.
Super light (3+): Data (3G) off, a couple calls, light texting, using Task manager wisely. It can happen...
One thing I have come to find out is that not only your screen is the number 1 factor but if you live in an area that phases your phone in and out of 3G very often, your phone could easily drain 10% per hour. The IT building here on my campus has god awful reception and it drains at 10% per hour but when I go home I only see 1-2% not doing anything at all. Wifi is a battery drainer too.
There were a few nights where I remember hitting task manager and clearing out every single task and everything possible running, turning off data, and turning the screen off and the phone did not even lose 1% of battery over 9 hours. Perfect reception.
So if you see terrible battery, try using your screen a little less, or turn down the brightness. Try a *228 for your radio towers update. Cell standby can you get hard if you're in bad reception.
The best thing you could do to save your battery is kill all of your tasks, turn off data, turn your screen off, and change your sync intervals to 1hour+.

[Q] HELP in Extending Xperia Play Battery Usage

problem solved by gingerbread 2.3.3 update
The problem is that gaming takes a lot of battery power. I haven't attempted to game for 6 or 7 hours straight but generally speaking, the Play has the best battery of all the handsets I've played with in a really long time. I jumped from a Captivate to the Play and even with little use, the only way I would get through a day is by charging while at work. No problem anymore with the Play, which always has way more charge than I expect to see when I check out my battery life. On the Captivate, you'd be lucky to get 3 or 4 hours of non-stop gaming before it was dead. My first charge, I went 36 hours on my Play with quite a lot of gaming (though not all in one sitting and probably not as concentrated as you). I can hit the promised 5 hours of straight gaming.
I've rooted and removed a few small apps here and there, nothing too huge. I don't bother with attempting to save battery life by going GSM only or just using a headset. Not sure what else you can do. Maybe your apps are more battery-hungry than mine.
Well I havnt modden not even rooted my play but I get 24 hrs or more easily with 1-2 hours gaming and moderate web browsing

One thing I ha e noticed is if you are in a poor signal area and the phone is constantly searching for signal it will drain the battery quite fast.... just a tip to check out... I came from the iPone 3GS to the Play and the iphone had great battery life for movies, music and web. But when you played games the battery died fast. I still need to try with my Play but I think I get more playtime from it. Download Advance Task Manager and run it when you are finished playing around with your phone each time, great little app. I also killed the widgets. Widgets are awesome and I wish I could use them but they seem to kill my battery fast. I'm going to order the charger with extra battery from Ebay soon. (Probably today)
It charges a separate battery on a stand so if you have a big game day you can swap out the battery during the day.
I love this phone for games. The iphone has a lot of games but 1 in 100 are worth the time. And the touch screen sucks for playing games. But the iphone beats the android for ease of use for thing like managing space.
Also get App to SD Pro. It is worth it and I like to buy cool tools if it saves me time of going through all my games to see which ones I can move to the SD card.

I hear that at work I have to put it on Airplane Mode.
For to increase battery you can put advance task killer on or something and get it to auto kill after lock like I did for my HTC Hero but with new advancements in the custom roms I didn't need it. I expect custom roms to help battery. Untill then, think about getting a new bigger battery. Look in the accessaries thread and find mugan batteries.

If any of those make you nervous, have a look at this thread for details on each (look for the entry from "constin").

As always, freeze first Oh, and kill your music service when not in use also.
I leave my house at 7 am for work with a fully charged phone.
I play with it at work for about 2-3 hours on and off. (my work place is really easy going, not much to do atm )
I get home at 4pm (which is now) and battery is 48%.
Then i play with it around 1-2 hours at night when i am in bed after 10 pm.
Normally the battery is around 15% then and i put it back on charge.
So i guess 6-7 hours worth of non-stop gaming sounds about right tbh.
For no signal situations, you might want to grab NoBars from the market. When it sees that you have no signal, it puts the phone into airplane mode to save your battery and then checks for signal again every ten minutes or hour or whatever you set it to.

[DISCUSS] Battery Life.

Most threads about battery are quite outdated, so I decided to start a new one.
And so recently my battery is starting to get less muscular.. My Xperia Play is 4 and a half months old, and one hour of consistent 3G usage can drop the battery down from 65% to 24%. I'm not very sure whether that is the norm, but if it is, that's bad battery life, in my opinion.
The Android 'Battery Use' page shows that most of my battery is drained from Cell Standby and System Idle (30%).
My wireless and GPS is always off. Am on 2.3.4 rooted.
Also, Gameboid consumes battery like a beast (even more than 3G), but I guess that's due to the high processing power required for emulation..
Is there any way I can improve the battery life?
Personally I found battery life to be terrible on 2.3.4 so I downgraded to R800i_4.0.A.2.368_World. I'm running 122M-1.5Ghz with scary and BFQ, on top of that I undervolted every frequency as much as I could using incredicontrol (Id give you the values but they vary by device). I always leave wifi, bluetooth, gps and data off when not using them, turned off automatic clock updates (there was a battery draining bug with this a while ago) and I run at 10% brightness with autobrightness off. With this set up I lose maybe 3-5% per night, so for around 6-8hrs in standby while I sleep. Ive got similar results on both cyanogen and stock. That being said I don't have a data plan so I do save a lot by not having data on, but a 40% drop in an hour isn't normal - Ive played an N64 emu which runs the processor full speed for that long and only experienced a 15-20% drop.
imho, the best battery life i've experienced is on 2.3.4.. when i'm on 2.3.3 i always lost 30-40% overnight (wifi, bluetooth, 3g, etc are turned off) stock rom, locked BL..
According to some folks, if you're charging your phone and let it stay plugged in for a while after it hits 100% that screws with the battery life.
On 2.3.4 rooted with all the facebook, timescape and other bloat removed my battery is pretty good. Wifi is on 247 and it reverts to hspda when out. Data syncs hourly, and i have contacts, hotmail and gmail syncing.
The other day i was sitting at 57% after 1 day 3 hours, and that included a half hour go on fpse, might have been more.
Battery life seems good to me. I get 1 day usage then charge over night. I do use my phone quite a lot for this (Tapatalk), Phandroid app, Engadget app, Joystiq app and browser. Wifi and GPS is always on.
At a guess I'm using the phone for about 1 hour a time, about 7 times a day... So like 7 hours web use, phone calls and texts, syncing is set to every hour with FiX on.
When I was on 2.3.3 I'd be lucky to get 10 hours out of the battery but 2.3.4 is awesome.
Edit. Obviously I play games too. Forgot to mention that.

Actually I get similar idle battery drain rates as you, but personally I'm not very concerned with battery drain as long as it's not so much. I'm more troubled with battery life on consistent usage, which I feel the Xperia Play (or at least mine) sucks at.
When I play Gameboid, I get the same fast battery drop too - 40-50% in one hour.

Yep, I read that from a lot of places too. I admit I used to do that (and have since stopped doing that), but sometimes I can't help it if I forgot to charge at night before I sleep (and have to charge overnight to ensure I have battery the next day).

I envy your battery life One thing, if you remove Facebook, will your Facebook contacts picture sync go away too?
And did you remove the bloat stuff by deleting them from /system/app?

Sigh, I could never get such good battery life..
All the more reason to undervolt, in standby undervolting doesn't have much of an effect on the phone since the processor is either in deep sleep or running at its lowest speed. Also using a governer like scary or smartass helps keep your device running at a lower frequency when possible. Like I said 2.3.4 was terrible for me, 10% drain overnight or more, but apparently YMMV with this. That being said 40-50% drain in an hour is crazy no matter what you're doing on the phone, like I said running N64oid for an hour drops me 15-20% keeping in mind this is at 1.5GHz with sound and the backlight constantly on. If all else fails you can always wipe everything and start fresh, carrying over the same settings while jumping around firmware can lead to some undesirable results. Anyway good luck and keep us posted
The facebook sync option doesn't appear on my anymore, although it used to. To clean it up all i did was :
Purchase Titanium Bakup
Freeze the things I wanted to remove and test rebooting, only freezing a few more each time
Backed up every app
Slowly uninstalled each one with a reboot every couple of apps
Enjoyed my faster phone with better battery life
I use the gmail sync and life.contacts for contact pics
I get amazing battery life on 2.3.4.
In stand-by I lose 1% every 3'rd hours. It's very good in use too. Yesterday I had my day with heaviest use so far and texted like crazy the whole day and a lot of phone calls. Some surfing, gaming and updating of apps between that. Basically the phone was frequently used the whole day with short periods of stand-by in between. At night when I went to bed the battery was at 40%.
Earlier this week I used it minimally for 2 days. The battery dropped 10% for each of those days. But that was very minimal use.
So in short. I have not experiences better battery life on any other Android phone. What takes the most power is emulating. It can suck up like 20% in an hour depending on which emulator I use.
I got my Play at the beginning of the week and with quite intensive use, without WiFi or 3g, I scraped an 8am to 6pmish day on the battery. Admittedly with a fair bit of gaming.
However, that was only waiting for my 2600mAh battery to arrive and now I'm using it, I would recommend it for the bulk. You don't notice it after half an hour or so and I have no issues with gaming on the go whereas I always thought it may die on the stock.
mine drops 4 - 5% /hour..... much faster than b4.... dn no w is goin on w/ ma PLAY.....
I found that since updating to 2.3.4 my battery drains quicker. Usually charge overnight and battery would be around 15% bedtime. (7am - 11pm approximately)
Now I'm finding that by 6pm I'm having to charge it and that's without gaming
brought to you by the XDA app on my badass Android toy
Three times in my first week and a half of ownership I awoke to find it completely dead despite fully charging it or nearly fully charging it before bed. I usually sleep with my phone next to my head so that I can ensure that the alarm will wake me up. That and the lack of a timer function really irk me about this phone. I really hate having to create and save an alarm when I know I only have 45 minutes or 2 hours to sleep (I work a grave shift and have inconsistent sleep schedules during the day). It adds insult to injury when something changes that lets me get another 5, 10, 20 minutes or so and I can't easily add it. On top of that, I have to go back and delete all the alarms I made throughout the day!

According to some folks, if you're charging your phone and let it stay plugged in for a while after it hits 100% that screws with the battery life.

Thats crap. Infact you should leave your phone plugged in a good 30/45 mins after it says fully charged if you want a full charge

Isn't it also beneficial to Li-ion's health to keep them at max charge whenever possible?...

Not at true max but at what the battery controller considers max. True maximum will drastically decrease the total cycles just like true minimum only to gain longer cycles in the short-term. When you store a battery it's best to stop at 75-80% because it will lose stored energy slower and not spend nearly as much time near 100%, which is still a trade-off between long cycles and more cycles.
What do you guys think to this?

Its the same size as the standard stock battery so there's no extra bulk... But gives an extra 930mah?
To be honest, I am somewhat tempted... However the question is, will it explode in my pocket and result in me losing half my leg? It's quite a big risk to take! There also might be a voltage difference, however I cannot see anything on that.
Im currently on 1.6Ghz, undervolted. And I just played Order and Chaos for 35 minutes and went from 86% to 63% - I've had bad luck in the past regarding phone batteries, I remember replacing my G1 battery around 7 times, but at these rates my Play would be dead after around 3 hours or less of gaming.
how do you update to 2.3.4 it wont show me =[ please someone answer me :/

You have to expect that with any phone playing an online game. Wifi/screen/GPU/CPU are going at full wack at the same time. What dya expect?
