Battery life sucks

I've had my battery replaced, I've wiped my phone from ROMs, and I've used aggressive SetCPU profiles...
What is annoying though is setCPU recently updated and I decided to see how my phone ran without it.. battery life is horrific with a simple UV kernel.. Why is this?
I mean I take my phone off the charger at 11am and by 10pm its less than 15% remaining. I now have a second battery from HTC after a warranty replacement but I saw very little change. I have a task manager that auto kills everything now which helps but it is annoying since I lost my car charger my phone is discharging all day.
Is this normal and I'm just freaking out or do I have a real problem?
Running Kang-o-rama ROM with ~20 apps

I know 3 things about the N1 battery:
1) it took a couple of weeks for my battery life to max. Lithium batteries need a break-in period. They have no memory, and the recommended approach of not using the phone until it's full charged is bunk. Just use it normally and it will work as it should.
2) Switching between 2G and 3G constantly murders the battery, 4 hours and you're dead. If you're going to be in an area like that for a while, force it to one or the other.
3) Watch your apps. If your phone is acting even slightly sluggish it's CPU is maxed which is killing your battery. Slowly swipe between homescreen pages, it should be silky smooth without any stutter. Try and track down which one it is and either install/reinstall (which fixed an issue with Better Keyboard for me) or completely uninstall if you can't fix it. Check for apps that ping the network too often, or ones that start up on their own.
I will add that the built-in 2.1 battery usage tracker is not 100% accurate. In my Better Keyboard example, Android said it was the screen using all the juice, not the app. Might have to do with video graphics drivers, I really don't know. Point is, after uninstall/reinstall my screen used 55% of my battery instead of 75%, so don't trust it.

Are you kidding? You're running your N1 for nearly 12hours and you STILL have 15% juice left?!?
Search the forums, 12hrs and still having juice left would be considered excellent to many.
...Then again, you haven't mentioned what your usage is like. If we were talking about your phone being in sleep mode for most of those 12hrs with just an occasional call or 2 that only lasted very briefly...Then that's a different story.

Have a look at Juicedefender, it will limit your internet access to 1Min on every 15Mins when the phone is asleep/screen is off. Does wonders for battery life

Battery Life?

How has everyone's battery life been with the Vibrant? I'm having a few issues with mine, I barely used my phone today, and its down to 57%, with cell standby taking up 33% of the battery.

So is there a fix for it? Or is it all samsungs fault? Or will the update solve it? This sucks, my battery can loose 30 percent in a matter of 2 hours...

Your battery has and always will react to the way you use it. If you a new user and play with it all day then its going to go fast. If you use 3g, wifi, bright screen you are going to get crappy battery life.
If you use it like a normal person with 6 to 10 calls a day, light web usage, some text messages you should get a battery to last you all day.
Fire up the screen and watch videos or listen to mp3's all day well then your not.

I turned off every little thing, and i still get crappy battery. Wifi off, gps off, sync off, wallpaper off, the whole shabang.

Does your phone actually die, or does it just show a percentage you are unhappy with?
The measurement seems to be a bit off on the Vibrant.

I was disappointed woth my battery life as well. But I wiped the phone and the battery performs better in my mind. Anyone else have a similar experience?

After discharging/conditioning it a couple times, my battery is much better. 9 hours of standby overnight, it only lost 10% battery. That's pretty good IMO.

I just unplugged my phone an hour ago, watched some videos, browsed the web and my battery is down to 86%. It dropped 14% in less than an hour!

Is this your first smart/android phone? Your battery doesn't sound far off for an high end smart phone.you'll eventually learn how to extend the battery, especially after the newness wears off and your not playing with it 24/7 like most of us right now.remember this is an extremely high end phone, it takes a lot of juice to run the high end chip set.if you buy a high performance sports car do you expect to have some fun with it and get 30+mpg doing so? You've gotta understand what you've got. Soon enough there will be extended batteries available and if your willing to root, many devs are capable if tweaking the os to get the most out of the battery without hampering speed our features.

I'm having major issues too. Down to 28%(down to 25% now just typing this message) after 3 hours this morning. I just powered off and back on and I went from 50% down to 28%
Here we go again g1 all over again Seems like the only way to keep power is to uninstall everything.
I'm also seeing cell standby as a possible issue.
Frustrated... Guess it's time to reset to see if one of my apps is the issue...

I have 35 percent left after being off of the charger for 1 day and 5 hours. This is with light to moderate use, meaning some browsing, some phone calls, some market downloads, about 20 minutes of gaming, syncing, and reading e-mails. Of course my mileage varies if use the phone more. When the phone is about to die I'll snap a pic to share how long a full charge has lasted me.
Already this battery is lasting me 2-3x longer than the G1.

I tried a different battery and it's been really good to me =)

What percent do you show for "cell standby" from setting->about phone->battery use? I'm starting to think that my poor reception area is my issue.

I think the battery percentage shown in the Status is off compared to what is shown on the battery icon. That said, my battery lasts all day with normal use. If i use the web more than normal, of course the battery goes faster but still i usually get all day out of it. May have to charge it some in the evening.
Was hoping it would be better like the iPhone 4 battery seems to be. It is said that 2.2 will have a bit battery life but we'll see. Believe it when i see it.....if we ever get the update

My wife and I got Vibrants at the same time. She was getting great battery life, around 70% by the end of they day, and I was dying just after 1pm. I assumed that i had a defective phone, but decided to wipe it and try running "stock" prior to returning it for a new one.
After wiping the phone and starting over, I'm getting much better battery life, but I think that it's because I didn't use "push" email. I have a corporate Exchange email/calendar/contacts account, and before I had it set to 'push" (or something like that, my phone is syncing DoubleTwist right now, so I can't check. ) When I re-setup my email account, I told it to check only every 15 minutes.
My battery life has been much better this time around, and I think the email sync setting is 1/2 the reason, the other half being that T-Mobile coverage isn't great where I've been the last week. I'm guessing that the "push" sync meant that the phone needs to keep a data link to the server, which is fine if you have strong coverage. When it's weak, then the radio has to work overtime trying to maintain a link, which drains the battery.
I'm going to try this out today and tomorrow, and if the battery life is better than I'll keep it rather than try trading for a new one.

For one, if you're having a battery issue, buy a charger or spare battery. Get a task manager to kill your apps after a certain time and check into what services are running in the background. Just cause you're not playing with the phone doesn't mean its not running or using the battery.

Cell Standby is at 24 percent.

Maybe its some quality control issue in the batteries? Everyone is getting such varied battery performance. I'm thinking of calling T-Mobile and requesting a new battery.

I notice on reboots many apps get started automatically. I've gotten better battery life just by manually shutting them down with astro file manager app. Ultimately any time an app is running even if its not using cpu cycles it still costs power to keep it in ram. Manually shutting down will minimize this obviously.

Battery Life?

Is anyone else having issues with battery life? My wife reported that she was at 70% when she went to take a nap and when she woke up (around an hour later) it was at 30%. I don't have it with me so I can't look up battery stats but I know wifi was off. Even if GPS was still on, you'd think that 40% of a giant battery wouldn't go by in an hour.
I just want to see if its worth investigating as faulty hardware or if there is a software issue involved. She did have meebo running which is a battery drain but even on my captivate with trillian running I don't lose battery like that!

Mine has been absolutely disappointing to say the least. Seems to last less time than my N1.
MILES worse than my iPhone 4.

Is meebo a instant messaging app? A lot of them aren't coded very well and constantly use data therefore killing the battery terribly. I've had my phone on wifi all day since 8am and i'm still at 70%

2.2 isnt designed to take advantage of 2 cores. Therefore its probably horribly optimized. 2.3 if it gets around soon - should be far better.

My battery life is great here.... no complains havent charge my phone since last night at 6pm... i still have 40% left

so far my battery lasts about 20 hours.
I turn off blue-tooth
turn off GPS, wireless is only on when I am near wireless spots
Normal day yesturday:
60 minutes playing WSOP game
40 minutes cell calls
40 texts messages
30 emails
40 minutes playing with settings exploring the phone...

look at whats sucking up your battering in the battery manager, then take adequate measures to fix the battery hogs. My battery gives me more than a full day of play and talk

mine's been off a charger for about 8.5 hours, and it's down to 20%. But it has been streaming pandora continuously for about 6 of those hours, so i'd say i'm doing pretty good. Mix in an odd phone call, playing, downloading apps, setting stuff back up, etc, and i'm not at all unhappy with battery so far.

Stop spreading misinformation.
The kernel (which handles all low-level I/O on the device) is compiled for multiple cores (hence the SMP tag, which stands for symmetrical multiprocessing, under About Phone, under Kernel Version).
On top of that, the Android SDK supports threads, which is in turn supported by the kernel and therefore spread across cores.

I'm suspicious that Motorola is using a bugged battery level scheme or calibration. I ran the battery down from 100% to 5% yesterday. When I got the 5% alert, it was still going strong afterwards for 30 minutes of continual use (downloading apps over wifi and configuring them, browsing the web, etc) after. I eventually got too tired to keep going and see how much longer it'd last.

Does the atrix have better battery life then a captivate?

Of the charger at 7am, its now 2:42pm and im at 80%. I use the phone heavily but auto sync is off.

meebo is awful, awful, awful at battery drain. Utterly awful. It uses a fairly inefficient way of checking for new messages and it kills battery life. Do not use it.
My Atrix battery life has been great so far.

cool, thanks for the info! I've never used it before I just use trillian but its what she downloaded.

My battery life is impressive. Yesterday off of the charger at 10am and I didn't charge overnight. When I woke up today it was still at 40%. I did a ton of downloading apps, setup, playing games and web browsing including flash videos. I played a 14 track cd from it when I went to bed, but I had it in airplane mode while sleeping. I use the apps for FB and Twitter instead of having Motoblur do everything. My brightness is over 3/4 too so I'm not handicapping the device for battery.

Hmm interesting..i have been getting HORRIBLE battery life. Off charger at 7am, by 12 i was at 20%. Some background data but ive tried to limit all refreshing apps to once a hour.

ok I don't know how to check useage by app but...
under "battery manager" I can get to a screen that looks like my captivate battery useage screen.
unplugged at 70%, useage is as follows...
time since last unplugged:3h 27m
Display: 50% Time On: 30 mins
Phone Idle: 36% Time on: 2 hours 54 mins
Cell Standby: 16% Time on 3 hr 23mins
Currently sitting at 30%

I took mine off the charger at 7 this morning. After very heavy use, and auto sync with facebook and gmail on. I'm at 30%
By heavy use I mean downloading apps, emailing, texting, gtalk all day.
I would say it's pretty good. Much better then my nexus one.

i expected it to be very good, its huge! The whole reason i'm posting this is to see if there is something wrong with her battery. The screen is usually the biggest battery drain on my phone (samsung captivate) but hers was only on 20 mins.

From my battery manager:
1d 3h 26m 13s since unplugged
That is 27.5 hours, including a whole day of heavy use. I'm at 15% battery.
This phone kicks ass.

Atrix Battery Life

I have been letting a couple of days go by to see how the battery is and I have got to say that I am highly not impressed. I love the phone and even like Blur but the battery is really a let down. I know that the first day or so that I use the phone heavily because of course.. ITS NEW. But today I have been real busy at work and have maybe text a few people, made 2 calls, and looked up a number using google maps and my battery is now down to 60%. In battery manager, it says 5h 2m 25s since unplugged which would be me taking the phone off the charger this morning and heading to work. Other stats are:
Display 35% 29m 52s
Phone Idle 26% 4h 32m 47s
Voice Calls 24% 6m 45s
Cell Standby 11% 5h 4m 5s
Wi-Fi 6% 1h 51m 56s
From looking at these battery stats and usage, does it even seem correct to be at 60% battery? This is at the least very minimal usage for a phone.

Yet another battery thread... One thing before people start complaining: don't estimate battery life based on battery gauge! Complain once the battery is dead and you HAVE to charge. That's the real mileage you'll get from your battery (and give it a few days to calibrate). The gauge is not a good indicator.

I am a new Atrix user too and so far the battery life is 12hrs or less. Maybe that is not impressive. Coming from the N1, its alright in my book.
I do want to say to everyone complaining about the battery life:
It can take a week or more for the battery to settle into the routine and perform to its maximum ability. Lets start the conversation again later next week on where our battery is at.

Yesterday I got 13 hrs between unplugging the phone, and getting the 15% warning. Not all that bad. Not great, but definitely could be worse.

mine has yet to drop below 30% and im pretty much browsing the web and texting all day. I dont care what kind of phone you have but making voice calls and playing games/watching videos kills battery with a quickness no matter how big a battery you have. . The atrix in my personal usage is just as good as my ip4 was.

Have the Atrix and Epic 4G and the Atrix lasts easily twice as long as the Epic.
I have to keep he Epic pluged in for my hour comute with pandora, just to make sure I have enough battery to make it for the trip home. Normal usage during the day with brightness all the way down, wifi off, BT off, sync On.
Had the Atrix today (day one after full night charge, unpluged at 6:30a), kept BT On, WiFi On, Brightness 100%, Sync On, Exchange Sync On, Auto off/standby set to 15 minutes, Pandora on via BT for my hour trip (unpluged), forest Live Background, Weather Widget etc.,downloaded everyting I could think of/find, constant e-mail, and constant "whatsApp" till noon (lunch), wache YouTube Videos for my whole hour lunch (still full bright mind you). Created 10 minute Install Video with 720p for work, then uploaded via WiFi, not USB. More Texing, Calls and Downloads. .... FINALLY haed to plug it in at 2:30p, with 5% battery left, I think I could have made it till 3 for sure.
That's a full 8 hours of NonStop Use of everything. I expect to get Morning-Night life from normal usage.
Final word. Test it first. I did and it's Great, not just good. The receiving end of all my texts and e-mail blasting and video look ups has an iPhone. He had to charge his at 2:30 too, but has his iPhone set to max battery save (brightness 15%, wifi off, sync off, etc.) But was using as intensly as I was

may be you have several internet connected background service running behind the scene?

My attitude towards the battery is a mixed bag.
1) PRO: It blows away the battery for the Eris (which I'm coming from)
2) CON: As these phones come to be computers with phone capability, it's really time for manufacturers to try their hardest for better batteries. I'd eagerly accept a phone twice as thick as this one if it meant double the battery life.
I find mine is only good for 10 hours (much less with heavy usage, but low calling time). I expected more.

I really call bull on this.
Coming from the world of Airsoft, I'm no stranger to battery performance.
Most of these performance myths are hold overs from the Ni-Cad days and don't apply to modern batteries.

Call Bull all you want. But it was true to the N1 and so far its been true to my battery. It does not last the first few days and gets better after a few charge cycles.
Frankly, everyone believes whatever they want on batteries. I for one take it as a user by user experience. I watch my battery life a lot, but I also like to have Google Reader and Google Listen syncing.

I'm at 30% right now and 12 hours unplugged. What I wouldcall moderate use. Its not as good as my captivate on custom rom / kernel but its far from bad enough.for me to complain about

Andriod sucks the battery, bigger battery on Atrix didn't help much. Google need to optimize the OS for better battery management. I am disappointed coming from Samsung Focus & iPhone 4, both have superior battery life. BTW, I am on Day#4, conditioning the battery didn't help any so far..

Looking at all the comments - I would say the Atrix is within range -- I knew when I saw the 1950 mAh (or whatever the exact spec) that the tegra processor must really be a power hog -- the new processor, along with the huge screen is going to draw a lot of power. Comparing to other phones with single core processors and screens even 20% smaller is not reasonable.

Definitely a good point... going to be interesting to see how well other dual core are going to hold up. That will be a better comparison.

Is that battery really a 1930mAH? The size looks like any 1500mAH battery isn't it?

I managed to get close to 16 hours of 'normal' use, meaning I wasn't trying to drain it, nor was I trying to conserve battery. I took the phone off the charger at 3pm and made it all the way to 2pm the following day with about 20% left. That's 23 hours, but I subtracted out the time the phone was on while I was asleep, 8 hours (nighttime mode).

Hmm hearing all these replies i believe i have a defective battery. I unplugged mine today at 5:15AM and now it's 2:18PM and it's just gave me the 15% beep. I've sent about 25 texts and played some words with friends. I've got watchdog installed and no apps seem to be out of control. I'm wondering if a factory reset would fix the issue or if i should return it.

try going to your dialer and entering *#*#INFO#*#*
Look under the battery usage and check the different items. Is anything using a significant amount? it could be a rogue app.
I will say MotoBlur has a lot running in the background. About twice as much as vanilla android.
I have turned most of this off and I do know that is helping my battery life.

Extreme battery drain with new Nexus S

Bought a AT&T Nexus S yesterday. I was using it last night, getting it all set up, battery drain seemed to be about normal. I put it on the charger overnight and took it off at 7:40 this morning. By the time I got to work a bit before 8 it was at 94%, when I pulled it out at 9, it was at 73%. Restarted the phone, but by 9:30 it was in the high 50s. Checked battery use stats, didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Figured one of the apps I installed last night was running rampant so I did a factory reset at this point. Checked back about 20 minutes later, it had dropped into the high 40s, so I tried another factory reset just to be sure, and when it was done resetting.....the battery was showing at 7%!
At this point I just turned the phone off in case I needed it working to make a call or something. Turned it on at lunch to check for mail/missed messages, used it for maybe 2 minutes with the battery still showing 7% and turned it back off. Tried to turn it on around 3 o'clock and the phone was completely dead, it refused to turn on at all. The only strange thing I noticed was that the back of the phone, above the google logo but below the camera was warm to the touch. Any ideas what's going on with the phone?

The Nexus will only charge to 94-98%. If you haven't done a few charge cycles yet, give it some time.

The phone shouldn't be able to consume the battery that fast. Normally I'd recommend troubleshooting, but since you just got the thing you might as well just replace it.

Well I bought it from someone who bought it last week. I messaged him asking him to get me a copy of the receipt in case I need to exchange it and he's not sure he knows where it is so that might not be an option. I'm charging it now, I guess I'll just see how it works tomorrow.

The battery life was crap on my nexus s for about week and a half. But after that the battery life got better and better and now as long as I'm not syncing my exchange account my phone will go from 6:30am to 10-11pm and still have 30-40% battery left.
Side note, anyone know why the corporate exchange account draws so much battery?

Which technology is used to keep the corporate exchange acc in sync by Android/Google? If it ain't the same as gCal, gMail, gContacts etc then there's your reason.
I do think it's some kind of idling process, which takes obviously more power then a push-type of thing.

Its the native program on the nexus s I'm using and I have it set to check only once an hour. But if I have it active or set to fetch once an hour it doesn't change how much more of the battery is used. But when I use it I'm lucky if I leave work with more than 50% of my battery left. Delete the account from my phone and I leave work with 80-85% battery left.

drain the battery a few times, then charge it to full. its normal seeing this kind of drain at first. it6 needs to be "calibrated".

mess with your display settings. lower the brightness and take it off auto. Turn the timeout to like 15/30 secs and see if that helps.
How hot is hot? Mine gets warm occasionally but spends most of its day in my pocket, but not hot.

Battery was much better today, still shorter than it should be, but I'd rate it as "android normal", especially since it hasn't been power cycled at all. It's down to about 25% after 10 hours off the charger, and I'm assuming it will get better, as others have said, after a few charge cycles.
For those asking how hot I was talking, it's the same spot that gets warm when you charge the phone, but it was noticeably warmer than it gets when charging, and like I said it stayed that way the whole day until it died.

Also depends on the charger, I bought a new charger, not the normal one you get with the phone, but a different one, still samsung though, and for the first time it charged to F !
Normally I would get up to 94% with normal charger
furthermore my battery life is excellent, can use it all day with 30% left. Using, cm 7.1.0 rc and matr1x 5.5 kernel

I experienced sometimes extreme battery drain, too. Fortunately I could figured out 2 reasons:
- Always: Kick Ass battery drain while logged in to Latitude, horrible!!! My full loaded Nexus S ran out of battery within 6 hours!!!! Thats not acceptable.
- Rarely, when Facebook App has problems and keeps the device awake in the background. By the Way, FB App for Android is crap!
To have I workaround, I do not use Latitude any more. A Log off out of Latitude could solve the extreme battery drain. FB problem, as I said, is very rare.

Just over a week since I received my ns4g.....been calibrating for 3 days now. Hoping to start to see some better results soon. Right now its averaging about 10% drop per hour, with moderate use. Nothing synced. No widgets. Display at 25%. Cm7 nightlies, matrix 5.5 bfs and proton uv at recommended setting.
I usually use my phone alot so I ordered an extra battery and charger just to make sure I always have enough juice. Would prefer to get an extended battery, but I couldn't find any case/holster combos that would work....

Define "with moderate use". Because 10%/h is kinda crazy seeing you are pretty much runnig at max batt saving settings unless you doing at least 20mins of webbrowsing/actually working or playing with the phone per hour on average.

I discovered something interesting today. Charging the battery in the NS never gets past 94/95% (safety feature i've been told).
I received the 2 x battery and external charger dealio i bought on eBay ($9.99 ) and started charging one of the batteries. Fully charged i put it in the NS and the charge read 100%. So i put stock battery in the external charger and when it was fully charged i put it in NS and it read 100% as well. It's been 3 hrs on the hong kong eBay battery and i'm down to 89% (average loss of 3% / hour), definitely better than stock battery so far. Will evaluate and see which battery holds up more.
Also, the Go Launcher task manager thingy always shows a butt-load of apps just "running" in the background, stuff i haven't even launched at all, and they annoy me to no end.

About 10-15 mins perusing forums, reading up on the news and reading tweets. Maybe a few texts. Have had to restrain myself from doing much more than that per hour. Usually use it more, at least I did on my last two phones ....that's why I had a 2800 mha batt for my evo and an extra batt for my optimus......

Sounds like the same ones I ordered today......keep up with an update! Hopefully they do the job.

But if I have it active or set to fetch once an hour it doesn't change how much more of the battery is used. But when I use it I'm lucky if I leave work with more than 50% of my battery left. Delete the account from my phone and I leave work with 80-85% battery left.

Polling your exchange every hour uses way more battery than setting it to push notifications. Also if you get 100 corp emails a day then its gonna be consuming more battery than if you get 5-10 emails/day. I use exchange with push and it barely registers on my battery usage.

Day 2 since my phone killed itself in less than 4 hours, battery seems to be draining normally again today so I guess it was just a glitch.
At least I think it's normal even though it seems high to me. Took the phone off the charger and the battery status read 95%. Locked the phone and checked back exactly 1 hour later and it was at 90%. Is that normal, 5% an hour just idling? The only account I have syncing is my google account, and my gmail isn't very busy. I have twitter, facebook, google+ installed but none of them are set to sync. Checked what was using the battery and the top was cell standby, followed by android system, followed by phone idle.

Get Battery monitor widget and have a look at your history. That'll give you an idea about whether it's actually going to sleep when it should. You also need better battery stats and find out if you have apps keeping it in wakelocks.
