[Q] Advice request for resetting my phone back to Vodafone stock - Galaxy S II General

Hi there, Ive had my SGS2 for a couple of days, and had nothing but hassle. First off is a 10 second delay in unlocking the phone when I press menu/power.
Second is battery drain. As an example, I had the phone charged fiully at midday today, now, Im at 54% with minimal use (checked email 3 times). 50% in 4 hours or so? Im currently running Litening 1.3, previously KE7 and originally Vodafone BUKE1. The phone is also rooted. Had the same issues on each one.
Seems to me that the handset is faulty.
Anyway, spoke ot Vodafone and they are swapping it out tomorrow (I ahvent told them I rooted/flashed roms). I just want to get the phone backl to original rom/original kernel without root. How do I go about that? I tried flashing BUKE1 and its stock kernel but root was still mentioned in the kernel version there in the info screen in About Phone. What do I need to do to completely revert the phone back to stock and wipe it completely (apart from resetting the binary counter, Ill fight that fight when they call me)
S

Flash original rom .
Source possible on dev section branded roms likewise binary counter removal post .
jje

In terms of removing root, is that done with flashing the Vodafone kernel and deleting the related root apps like superuser and busybox that are left on there? Specifically the mentioning of the "[email protected]" text that was left in my kernel version in About Phone Information screen...
S

[email protected]" text that says root not rooting is Android signature .
Any flash of full firmware removes root .

A Couple of Questions

hello guys,
here's a list of questions I have compiled which were bothering me since i bought my SGS, hope you take your time and answer these:
What is "root"-ing. How different is it from flashing a firmware on motherboard and installing an OS on to a hard drive?
Does rooting an android device kill its warranty?
Which way is the best and reliable way to root my SGS?
How do I bring back my SGS to Factory state after I root my phone?
Is there a way that I can download the AOSP off the android site and install it on my phone.
I'm with O2 (UK) and I'm required to send blank text to a number. My SGS doesnt allow me to send blank texts. How do I send blank texts? :/
How do I integrate my contacts with the ones from Facebook/Google, when I dont want all the contacts from other sources to be shown in my contacts?
regards,
emc
Quick answers:
1. Root = full control of os ( linux superuser capability) it has nothing to do with flashing firmwares
2. YES
3. search the forum or google for Galaxy s rooting (very easy 10 min max)
4. firmware reflash or
*#*#7780#*#*
This code can be used for a factory data reset. It'll remove following things:
Google account settings stored in your phone
System and application data and settings
Downloaded
5. no. that is vanilla android with no drivers. look for vanilla custom rom for SGS on forum
6. I work for a carrier in Romania so i know : IT DOESN'T MATTER IS YOU PUT TEXT IN IT (just put a letter in it and send)
7.CONTACTS->Menu-> Display options
Hope it helps. Good luck.
thanks, your answers were helpful, but raised a few more question now.
if rooting has nothing to do with flashing firmwares, why does one have to reflash fimware to return to factory state? (can you explain technically?)
I still need to figure out how to setup friends in contacts, I've already enabled contacts from facebook/google.. What I wanted to know is how do I filter people from the list so that I can see only selected of them in my contacts and not all?
-----------------------------------
edit:
just saw that my Kies asked me to upgrade to JM1. should I do it?
If I do it will *#*#7780#*#* bring my phone back to JF3 (default)? or will it bring to JM1

You don't HAVE to reflash the firmware technically, rooting basically just overwrites a few files (generally, the kernel). Technically, it should be possible to simply revert the files to unroot the phone. But the only reason you would probably want to unroot anyway is to send the phone in for service, and first thing they'll do is reflash your phone with a firmware which is known to work anyway.. So you might as well.
In regards to the warranty status after rooting, it's actually a grey area as to whether it affects the warranty. If you flash with the I9000M rom, yes, Samsung probably wont be impressed. It is always better to reflash with clean firmware before returning it to service, but unless there is evidence that rooting messed up the hardware on your phone, it's probably unlikely they would reject warranty. But better to be safe.
I don't think Samsung encrypted the bootloader sequence, and had they been concerned, they would have probably disabled USB debugging within the firmware.
ok thanks ^_^
now a few more questions:
whats a clockworkmod recovery?
whats a samset?
whats an odin?
do you suggest me to upgrade my firmware?
how do i backup my current firmware?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it is my moto . Do you experience any problems with your handset ? Like lags , lockups or anything of that sort? If you don't, then I think its better if you leave it as it is. Just apply the lagFix if you want to, but I see no reason to flash your phone to a different version right now.
I have flashed many phones before (where it was much riskier than Galaxy flashing) But I still didn't flash my Galaxy S , because I simply dont see the need to change to another 2.1. I'm waiting for Samsung to release official froyo 2.2. I suggest you wait for that too.
my phone lags a lot
I share phonix view and motto. If you do experience problems post symptoms before doing something like reflash or factory reset.

Lag can be easely fixed with a patch. You get root and lag patch in one pack. Will try to post a link.

updgraded my phone and did a factory reset, phone DOES NOT GOES BACK TO JF3!
just for your info
that's because u upgraded/flashed a complete new rom which replaced the old one there for factory reset will give u the latest firmware/upgrade that u have installed.

Locking up straight out of the box

Just got my new i9500, turned it on and with in minute it locked up then rebooted (no sim or mem card at this stage).
Did't think much of it at the time. Went ahead and rooted it & flashed Omega rom.
Unfortunately it continues to lock up & reboot every few minutes of use. Looks like it is faulty and will have to go back for warranty. My concern is the rom counter and warranty. Will flashing a stock firmware with odin put the counter back to zero?
Flashing stock with odin will not reset Samsung's rom counter. From my understanding, there are ways to reset the counter, but you have to be very careful because it has the potential to really mess up the phone. If you flash back to stock rom and stock recovery and relock the bootloader, you will be able to exchange it wherever you bought it without an issue (assuming you are still within the 14 day period most carriers give you). No one will look that deeply into the software of the phone until it gets back to Samsung. And even then, it is not guaranteed they will check that. I'm not saying it won't happen, but the odds of you having any issues are slim.

TALE OF A HEART BROKEN ROOT ATTEMPT
hello xda members
i am a note 3 N900 (exynos)user from India. i bought this phone in december 2013. all was going pretty good for a while. after almost 6 months the battery life started to diminish. initially i could get 24 h total time with 3-4 hours screen time and with 3G data on intermittently. but once the battery life decreased and got heating issues near the camera i decided to root. I had taken my phone to authorized samsung service centres twice to know whether my phone has any battery issues to which they said " everything is fine ". i waited till the end of my warranty period and attempted to root in january 2015. i have been doing many researches by reading posts and watching videos online. Finally the D day came and i decided to go for it !! I tried everything as mentioned in the video by cursed4eva based on chainfires post. everything went fine and finally got a message : FAILED !! i tried once more and the end result was same. then on my 46k worth note 3 i saw this heart breaking message " "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.". i tried to do so in kies but it was also futile. finally i took my phone to a nearby mobile shop and they said this can be repaired but will take some time, pls come in the afternoon. I was totally disappointed and was thinking just because of this root attempt i have spoiled all these hard earned money of mine At around 5 pm in the evening i got the phone back . i was so happy to see it was working fine ! but i lost 500 indian rupees for that !
End result of that tiring day was like this : i tripped my knox counter, phone wasnt rooted and lost 500 rupees
later my battery life decreased. after a full charge now i get only 14 hrs with 2.5-3 h screen time( phone is just 1 year old). when i tried to search for any soft ware updates i got one more wonderful message which conveyed the message" your device has been modified and no OTA " When i hear that lollipop update is at the door steps i can only sit back with a heart full of sorrow
dear friends out here , i need your priceless help in this issue. I am not well versed with this rooting stuff , so need a simple explanation about what actually would have gone wrong with my rooting extravaganza !! i have read some posts that my mobile can be modified in such a way that knox counter will be 0x0 and system status original which will help me update via OTA. so please guide me through what all things have to be done and what to do in case i see the heart breaker "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." again !!! . After all these , i tried to format my phone thinking it will improve the battery life, but factory resetting both ways is impossible now.
in concise , my requirements
1. need to root my device safely- Warranty period is over now
( SM N900, Kitkat 4.4.2, base band version N900DDUENG1 , kernel version 3.4.39-1955999, Build number KOT49H.N900XXUENF3)
[email protected]#1 Mon jun 23 21:02:09 KST2014)
2. need to update to lollipop OTA and reset KNOX to 0x0 and system status to stock
3. is my battey life normal ?? dec 2013 model getting 14 hours 100 to 0 % with 2.5-3h screen time and 50mts of voice call and whatsapping and chrome browsing on H+ (3G) network with 2G plan
4. how to factory reset the phone ( i tried using settings and hard keys- both failed) . when i released the power button the galaxy note 3 logo vanished and reappeared and went straight to boot. i dint get the menu to reset the data)
Please , please give ur valuable advices rather than redirecting me to some links which will redirect me to some never ending loops !! if someone from the geniuses have time, please help me through my facebook messenger or whatsapp

Hello there ,
i would like to tell you that you can easily root your phone by kingo root. it is safe. dont forget ti on USB debugging.
and no way to reset knox counter. so better forget about that.
1. You can use towel root not sure if it still applies forgot the required date for it to work. CF root also works make sure its for your model nlsm-n900. Tried kingo root it also works.
2. No way to reset knox to 0x0 but that wont hurt your phone. You can install russian lollipop you can download it at sammobile again make sure its sm-n900.
If your phone is currently rooted you may want to use triangle away to reset binary then flash stock russian lollipop rom but it wont again changr knox to 0x0. You will then be able to do ota.
3. For battery normally a battery needs to be replace after a certain charge cycle and usually after one year but it really depends on how often and what you use the phone for.
4. While phone is off did you press volume up and home(not sure if required) and power buttom at the same time?
I dont usually use this since i have a reboot application option.
I can understand what you were been through so if you arent rooted go to towel root down load it ( press the button named make it ra1n ) this will root your phone and you dont have to worry about brick it again ... If you want to upadate your device you have to download odin is windows pc programm which can help you to flash stock roms or update your device ..
If you want to download official rom go to sammobile sign in and find your device .
About the battery problem you can do better with your phone so if you root you your note install greenify app from playstore , download gsam to see which app is draining your battery ,reboot your phone once a while

@drheart the shop person nay have flashed a custom rom.
Now you can flash a fresh rom via odin and get the rom from sammobile.com. also use the cf root method on xda for the rom that you will flash.

1. You have to update your binaries first (like in the pic attached). You will have to reboot then
2. Next step is READ XDA forum (about cwm, xposed and custom roms) and no hurry to flash anything if you aren't sure.

Yes, but follow the instructions carefuly :highfive:
Guys . I have rooted my device and has installed titanium and cwm. Everything has been backed up. I have an exynos variant ,india version and is currently on 4.4.2. As of now official lollipop is unavailable in india. I would like to install the russian lollipop. Have a few questions.
1. After installing the lollipop will i lose my root status
2. Can i install the kitkat version via odin if i ever want to revert.
3. Will it be possible to change the language fron russian to English
4. Finally if anything goes wrong and the screen show firmware update encountered an error ,what to do rather than panicking
Thanks in advance
First a general warning - from my experience and reading, a major cause for bootloops and phone issues is NOT doing a physical Download Mode. i.e. rebooting into DL mode or simply restarting and holding the keys. If you want to flash a new ROM (or Stock AFAIK) you must do a physical Download Mode. i.e. you take out the battery, wait about 10 secs, then put the battery back in and hold down Home+Down Vol+Power. Note you need to take out the USB cable BEFORE doing this.
Also, most people don't seem to know that even the latest batteries need to have recharge cycles done - every so often, at least once a month, make sure you run the battery down under at least 20% - lower is better. Also make sure you never take it to 0%. This is the single reason most laptop batteries fail 1 month outside the warranty - people leave them plugged in. It might seem a good idea to keep your phone charged always above (say) 60% but it isn't.

You're right... sorry about that.
1. After installing the lollipop will i lose my root status
If it is Stock firmware and you use Odin, yes. It will remove root, so you would need to do it again. Is there a reason you'd want stock rather than a custom ROM? I've used Alliance ROM and Temasek's CM12 and both are excellent, fast and smooth. Temasek's is not stock based but it is very nice to use. Alliance is probably the most customisable ROM I ahve seen that doesn't use Xposed or other 3rd party system to provide the ability to set it up how you want.
2. Can i install the kitkat version via odin if i ever want to revert.
You should be able to. I am unsure why you'd want to as so far, I am very impressed with LP, even the stock from Sammobile. I say 'should' only because I am unsure if the updated bootloader from the LP flash would support KK firmware.
3. Will it be possible to change the language fron russian to English
Yes. I have yet to see a ROM where you can't pick your language on startup.
4. Finally if anything goes wrong and the screen show firmware update encountered an error ,what to do rather than panicking
This is kinda answered in previous post about doing the physical boot to download - it's the only time I have seen issues coming from an Odin flash process - doing a restart into DL mode rather than pulling the battery to get there.
The other possibility is wrong PIT file or partition size. e.g. I had a Hong Kong S3 and had all kinds of problems trying to get a custom ROM onto it - managed it eventually but for a while I thought I'd only ever be able to use HK variants. So I'd make sure I have a firmware based on where your phone is from on my hard drive so if something DOES go wrong you can simply use Odin to flash that version.

Help Needed, 5.0.1, hanging and restarting

Hello Everyone
I need urgent help as my phone is not working and it is too irritating to keep switching it on and off. Just to give a brief history of my phone, I rooted it 3 months back thru ODIN, I actually wanted to install xmod games and that required a root. The root went fine and my purpose was solved.
Now today after three months my phone yesterday I got a message for software update and on which i clicked, it said i can't update it and post that the phone is constantly hanging and restarting. Launching an app seems to take ages. I am seriously very annoyed. I thought it is the root hence I clicked on full unroot and uninstalled SuperSU. But this didn't solve the problem.
The KNOX counter reads 0x1 (4) warranty void. I am unable to use the phone for a single minute and its heating up too much.
I want to know what to do next.
Should I flash a custom rom? If yes please suggest some. ( my model is 910G factory unlocked)
Should I flash a factory rom?
Should I re-root & set counter to 0 using triangle away and then try to update it over wifi?
Any other suggestions?
From what I have read lurking around XDA, if you are on stock ROM with root capabilities, you can't use OTA updates, you must use odin. You can download the stock 5.1.1 for your model/region on Sammobile. Also, you may find the ROM you need here on XDA hope I could help.

Looking for the right stock ROM

Hello all, first post here so please be gentle, I've searched and been at this for the better part of the last 12 hours.
I have a US Cellular Note 3 and I plan on trading it in towards a new phone soon (hopefully tomorrow if I can get everything going.) I've never had a custom ROM, I rooted it with towelroot and have used supersu for superuser access and have been using it like that for the past year and a half. From what I understand in order for everything to go over smooth trading it in I need knox to be at 0x0, and for it to show stock official ROM and official device status. As of right now knox is at 0x0, it shows official ROM, but device status shows custom, also in device status in my settings it shows custom and it won't update. I deleted all of my root apps, did a full unroot with supersu, still says custom. I unmounted my SD card and wiped my partition cache, still says custom.
at this point here's what I'm attempting to do based on a few hours of digging, download and flash a stock ROM (Have Odin ready, phones plugged in, drivers installed, downloading what I hope is a good ROM) re root my phone with towelroot, reinstall supersu, run triangle away, full unroot with supersu again, factory reset.
I can't post my download link due to being a new user, I went to sammobile firmwares and punched in my model number and found a download link.
my device model number (SM-N900R4)
Also my baseband version is N900R4TYUCNAB and I'm running 4.4.2.
Now for my questions: Will flashing a stock ROM trip Knox? How do I know for sure if it's a good stock ROM? Is this the appropriate course of action? In hindsight I probably should have asked that question first.
I really hope somebody can help me out with this, I've rooted every phone I've ever had but I feel pretty over my head at the moment.
UPDATE:::: I'M AN IDIOT!
Updated to lollipop through kies fixed the issue. If google leads anybody here in the future just use kies to update.
In all my years of flashing stock Samsung ROMs, none of them have ever tripped the Knox counter.
