I've just got my Iconia after switching from an Advent Vega, and I'm rooting about the net for a microHDMI adapter.
In the meantime though, I'd like to know if the Iconia suffers the same problem as the Vega did: does using HDMI slow down the graphics ever so slightly?
On my Vega, hooking up HDMI incurred a performance penalty, and if you were playing games/emulators it got pretty noticeable; in fact in emulators like FPSE it actually rendered the games unplayable, whereas before I had to turn on the FPS limiter if HDMI was disconnected.
So chaps and chappettes, does your Iconia slow down at all when your telly/monitor is hooked up?

I have used the hdmi out alot and I have not noticed any slow down at all. Google earth is really cool over hdmi.
Groovy, thanks. That could be the difference between the Harmony board and whatever the Iconia uses.
Is it fluid with games too? No slowdown at all?
Me
For me, the screen resolution is buggy.
It only shows like 80% of the A500 screen.
It's fluid yeah but the resolution glitch is making me angry.
3.1 with 1080p will be nice,

wondering how the transformer does video? i.e. netflix, youtube, flash, streaming, rather general but common video. does it do well and output to a hdtv well? i have an atrix with lapdock and it's great for what it is. light duty browsing and what not. what does suck is android is emulated inside webtop, and i keep running across the transformer and the dock and it keeps appealing to the part of my brain that says you need more cool toys. i like the dock idea, and asus saying that future transformers will be compatible with the dock. it's hard these days to hold and believe a corporations word on stuff like that, but i gotta admit, it seems like a better overall solution than atrix lapdock combo. anyways, it is eating away at me. i am contemplating returning the lapdock and getting the dock. but the other part of me is saying wait for a quad core/better dual core gpu solution and then get that and the dock. i have a very nice sager laptop that does everything of course. what i really like about the lapdock is it's more portable and has more "fun" built into it. i like playing emulators and surfing the web and reading a lot. when i don't need the light duty aspect of the dock, i can undock it and get comfortable. so how well does it output/mirror to a hdtv also? don't tell me what i want to hear please. tell me what i need to know. i am thinking i should return the lapdock and wait for asus' next upgraded transformer that will probably be more suitable for my light and entertainment needs.
with proper vid players, the TF can handle hi-profile 720p videos (check out dice player). with the latest update, the TF now supports netflix. however, netflix hasn't enabled their app officially for the TF, so you can't get it from the market...but you can easily find the app somewhere and side-load it. and yes it does work.
netflix doesn't stream the highest quality videos to the android app it seems, so it's not the greatest quality, i'd say quality is somewhere between tolerable and good. and you can output the video via hdmi.

The transformer can mirror to a HDTV correct? Portrait and landscape? Sorry I am not researching a these details definitively on my own. I don't want to make an impulse buy. If I did buy this it would have to be a two year solution/toy to justify the expense. And I am not enticed by tablets that much until transformer blipped on my radar. I could impulsively buy it if I return my lapdock and only shell out ~$320 more but I just don't think tegra 2 could make a two year grind justifiably.
I voided my warranty.
you can view your movie on your tv using HDMI out.(except soft subtitles)
Netflix sometimes takes minute to buffer then it looks high quality. other HD videos look great too.
The only problem I've encountered so far with the HDMI out is that movies rented through Google's Android Market will not play properly. They play fine on the device itself, but the screen goes blank when hooked up to HDMI. It is unknown whether this is going to be fixed, as it could likely be a HDCP issue.

This limitation also bothers me, I loathe having to burn in subtitles bleh.

I heard something similar, supposedly the xoom folks can output rented movies.

My setup: wired USB Logitech gamepad hooked up to Iconia, which is hooked up to TV by HDMI, playing emulators.
I've noticed a small 'delay' in a few games I've tested, Mario for NES for example, from when I push a button to when I see the jump animation. It's not a horrible delay, but it's noticeable and I can't figure out if it's being caused by the emulator, the controller (brand new), the Iconia, or the HDMI. I haven't played these kind of games with a controller in so long, maybe I just suck at it?
Is it even possible that the delay is because of the HDMI output to the TV? I've seen so many people talk about playing games this way I wouldn't think so.
Well, when not hooked up to the TV, do you have the same delay on the tablet's screen?
I just tested it, and there is a slight millisecond delay from what I see on the TV compared to what I see on the Iconia.
As miniscule as that seems, it is noticeable on some games. Knowing this, is this something that can be fixed by perhaps a different HDMI cable (yeah I know, they're all the same pretty much), a change of settings, or is this something you just have to live with?
'Cause it's really a let-down
You're running an emulator on an Android device, and you believe it's the HDMI cable giving you a millisecond delay?
Really?!?

Why yes I actually do believe it might be the HDMI cable, among other possibilities. It doesn't matter whether it's an emulator or not, there is a delay.

I shouldn't have worded it that way - the delay happens whether I'm using an emulator or any other program. It's not specific to emulation, it's the whole device.

Now that it's clear, I can see as how you might believe it's related to your cable, even though that's most likely not the issue. Have you tried another cable to rule that variable out?
Apparently certain TV's are better than others when it comes to input lag.
I think mine's one of the problem children. Case closed, I guess. Nothing I can do to fix it.
I also hook up my iconia via HDMI and play emulators. I noticed a small lag as well. Its just barely noticable
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
typically TV's do some processing on the input image, this takes some miliseconds up to 200 milliseconds. No problem usually, but now you see both source (Iconia) and target (TV) and notice a small delay...
Try switching off all 'enhancements' on the TV, that may show some improvement...
The delay is not caused by a cable, unless it is hundreds of miles long
It's only a 6 ft cable. And the TV has no fancy options to turn off. It's a budget model (which is why I have this issue to begin with).
I tested some more, and it doesn't make things unplayable, I'm just used to millisecond timing on games like Mario and so I have to re-learn how to play. Some games are better than others.
Hello,
Here's my situation, I want the original resolution of my movies in order to watch movies thanks to the hdmi output on my 40' Sharp, but I have lot of lag with 1080p movies (no lag with 720p movies with original resolution).
Is the Iconia Tab A500 capable of that ? I'm using Dice Player with Thor Rom v14.2.
Thank you !
It "might be". According to Acer, the device is capable of porting 1080p to a TV via HDMI but there are plenty of sites out on the web stating it will require a patch that Acer has not provided. Also, the Tegra 2 processor should process 1080p but that too might be questionable. There are also other sites that discuss this too.
So, it should be capable, might be able to, but likely might not as well.
Good discussion over in the General forum if you want to read that.
Thank you, i'm wondering if overclocking my Iconia Tab A500 could be usefull for this problem...

Possibly not. Probably, it`s not an issue related to the processor.
As our colleague said above, it requires a patch which wasn't released by Acer.
I've been scouring looking for something to help me with video performance, and this actually makes me think I should wait before I try overclocking. Thank you for saving me from a potentially horrible experience.
Nothing wrong with overclocking at all, I notice a way better experience on my tab oc'd to 1.6, but as they said above, and I can tell you from my own experience that even oc'd 1080p will still lag on the a500. If battery life is a priority to you stay away from ocing, and be sure to stability test if you decide to do so.
even playing 720p is too laggy for my a500
If you can get 720p files to play, consider yourself lucky. I have tried every single player I could find, and none can reliably play 720p mkv files. bsplayer and mirage beta are close, but still not watchable... dice was ok, but no better than the rest, from my experience...
I currently have the Asus prime and love the tablet, but it doesn't work for my needs as a multimedia device on the go. With the blue tooth and streaming video/audio issue, my main purpose of it is no longer functional. I could careless about the gps.
I was looking at the Acer 500 tablet. I know it would be a tegra2 compared to the tegera3 and there is the 510 model just released. After the mess that is happening with the prime I'm hesitant to try another brand spanking new model right out of the gates. I don't mind yesterdays technology if it's proven to work and tweaked already. Plus it should be a bit cheaper.
So my question is, how do you owners of the Acer brand of tablets like your devices? Particularly the media abilities of it. I use youtube, stream tv shows, stream cartoons, and internet radio. Being able to use my blue tooth headset is my sore spot and is what I'm looking to rectify with a different tablet.
I do some gaming but not much on the android platform has really taken me yet. If these Acer models play Order and Chaos then it would be a boon.
Thanks for any suggestions or advice.
THere are video limitations with 1080p . mosy 720 will play fine. Streaming for me works well,of course some of the roms are better then others.I will not make comments on any of them. I would say read the forums of those roms.Order and Chaos does actually run very well on my A500. as with most other android games. I can also say my Bluetooth motorola hd 9 headset works flawless.
Good Luck .
Its OK
I have an a500, video and audio streamig works fine, same goes for bluetooth, I hate how the browser auto closes when it runs out of memory specially when watching heavy loaded web sites (I mean heavy Flash content).
I am on stock 3.2.1 rom, no root.
I love the big usb port as I can connect almost anything, I have a USB hub and can connect 4 things at the same time (memory, keyboard, mouse and gamepad).
Sound is good, not top best but is ok.
No good 1080p playback as Erica already said.
No GPS issues unless you go for custom roms.
Planned to update to ICS by the end of the month.
I like my A500 but I would never go from a Prime to an A500.
I don't have any issues with my device per say. I run netflix, crunchyroll, etc. on there and I use plex as well as tversity so 1080p videos and anything out of the scope of compatibility for my tablet from my library aren't an issue for me. Like you, I use it for multimedia purposes and I am satisfied.
My unwanted 2c is you just wait for a patch that makes you LOVE your Prime. It took several software revisions before Acer got it right with Honeycomb on the A500 and Tegra3 as well as ICS is brand spanking new so I'd give it a bit more time. I stuck with the A500 because I liked it and I found the USB port useful but as I said, I would not go from a Prime to an A500 for the mere fact that the Prime is technically speaking, a newer device with better/faster hardware and a better screen....even if you THINK you don't care about Tegra3 vs. Tegra2, once Asus gets the software refined, overall it will be better than the A500. If it's a case where you have some disposable dollars and are thinking of getting the A500 in the interim, go ahead; but if you're going to swap/exchange the Prime and then buy an A500 I would heartily advise against it.
Good Luck to you, whatever you decide.
As for me, here is what I can say about the A500 :
- for the videos, I'm used to ripping my DVDs and blu-rays so I can read them on the tablet. My favorite format is MP4. Nothing special to say about DVDs, but as for the Blu-rays 720p main profile works fine (high profile does not), just as 1080p low profile (both main and high profile won't be readable with a comforable frame rate). It's also a matter of bit rate : for 720p main profile, 3500 Kbps is almost perfect, 4000 Kbps is fine 90% of the time but it can get really laggy for some minutes at times. For 1080p low profile, 5500 Kbps was fine, haven't tested anything else yet because anyway good 1080p compressed movies weighs like 8GB and with FAT32 you're supposed to be limited to 4GB. No noticeable quality differences with the tablet screen anyway, and very little on a large TV screen given the compression, so to me 720p main profile remains the best choice.
- Sound is surprisingly good but mic really (and I mean really) sucks. Barely usable.
- Screen isn't as accurate as on other tablets. It makes no differences at all for a normal use but if you intend to handwrite it is still possible but not perfect.
- Battery life is fine for me, but it lasts less than others. Like 6 to 8 hours in video, the same for a standard use (internet, reading,...).
- The screen is good, but again not as good as the Asus's screens or iPads and Galaxy tabs ones.
- The USB port is a huge feature for me, it works just fine with my NTFS external hard disk, with all my USB keys, with all my USB PC controllers (that are already set the right way !), with my keyboard, my mouse, and my USB hub so I can use my keyboard and mouse at the same time on the tablet !
- With Honeycomb, internet browsing is a little bit too slow and lacks smoothness for me with the default browser (I'm used to great smoothness and speed with my SGS 2), so I chose to use Dolphin Mini, which is fine. Hope the ICS update will fix that though.
In conclusion it's a good device but for 2011, you're likely to be disappointed coming from a Transformer Prime. Better wait for the A510 or the A700 to my mind.
Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm going to hold on to the prime for another 2 weeks or so and see how the 510 is holding up. It's always the customers that find the little quirks which are not noticed by the manufactures in their testing phases.
Thanks again!

i really love my tab
it supports all my needs
but on a500 you have to use external 3g modem (i dont use 3g on my tab)
if 3g is important i would rather a501
but the other things about it is really good
i use it for media too. i even dont use my pc since ive got it
and about the 1080p video playback
hardware codecs are kinda laggy but i use software decoders and its ok
I'm just posting this in case others are having this issue... When I got my backed out a it was slow on response and figured it was a wip and would get better...it never did...until I was at my friends showing them xbmc and decided to play ice rage and to my surprise it was buttery smooth....I figured the last update fixed it however when I got home it was dead slow again... So I switched HDMI cords and put it on my other TV and bam perfect.. So it could be something worth trying if your game is slow. This was all factory HDMI cable and all...the aftermarket Philips HDMI cable was way better. Hope this helps some.

I've already tested this too, but with old HDMI cable (1.2, 1.3, don't know) and nothing happened. Use Tegra Overclock OUYA, if you have stock cooling it might be noisy, but perfect. OUYA use Tegra profile for decoding I think it's about 200MHz - 350MHz and it's really too slow, if you are running at max 520MHz it's a way better.
That doesn't make any sense. An HDMI cable is just an HDMI cable. It could be that you're using 720p instead of 1080p now (you said you switched TVs), which would make a difference.

HDMI cable or TV theoretically can make a difference - I've had a couple inexpensive android sticks (the tiny ones that look like usb drives) not be able to drive a signal to my (crappy, off-brand, but generally decent) TV because the HDMI power draw was too great. (I know this seems like a really weird thing, right? common sense says "huh? it's just digital video and audio data right?" but there is in fact power requirements). shorter and better quality cable actually fixed it for me.
but - usually it's an all or nothing situation. you get the signal or you don't. lower machine performance wouldn't be indicated, I think.
