What exactly is ext4 because I don't notice any difference at all in the performance of my phone. I'm also running voodoo lagfix on GingerReal 5.1.

hi, a little bit of info.
EXT4 is another Filesystem that we use instead of the stock RFS offered by Samsung
It IS faster but since 2.2.1 (IMO) you really can't see the difference in performance because Samsung optimised the Filesystem (god help them as they STILL didn't change it) It is faster in read write and is more robust than RFS
Anyone wanting to correct me may do so
EDIT: your benchmark scores, like quadrant will be higher
Everyone is always saying to get the ultimate experience you need to flash a custom rom, apply a lagfix and change to ext4. I have done all these and cannot see the difference in performance at all.

well, the stock roms got way better over time. 2.1 was unusable and 2.2 just bad. with 2.2.1 things changed and the phone got pretty good without root or custom roms ... or lagfixes
If you don't feel any difference after applying a lagfix decide what you're more comfortable with and leave the phone on that file system. consider the fact that you'll have to be on rfs to flash a rom via odin.
If you want to speed up your phone try juwe's memory optimization
a different launcher might also help (launcher pro and gingerbread stock are fast ones I know)
what else... don't install IM clients or anti virus programs, they tend to kill battery and sometimes performance.
you could also look into overclocking but I was never either comfortable with the idea nor did I feel any need to.
EDIT:
instead of flashing the zip file from juwe you can download Galaxy tuner, go to memory manager and set up everything yourself
values are as following (juwe's)
VM: 50; 10; 50; 100; 90; 5
EDIT II:
praveen6585 did the math for the lowmemkill settings, those are:
10; 16; 24; 48; 56; 72
mine are a bit lower, I feel it's a bit faster in daily use because applications that were just used stay in the RAM longer

yes, that's correct, I added the lowmem kill settings to my previous post
thanks mate, giving them ago now, ill give it a day or so. rfs is fast but i do notice the difference with ext4
I don't know, but I surely felt aspeed difference when removing the ext4 partition both on froyo and gb. Also gb seems to be a lot smoother stock than froyo, even with the 500hz kernel. Also I prefer hardcore's speedmod on both versions.
PS: I used android assistant's hourly boost on both and it helped me much. I have yet to try these lowmem settings so I'd be glad for any info on their usefullness.

I put on the new Voodoo Lag fix and have had no problems. My phone is as fast its ever been. Because before that I was using ryanzas lagfix on the market and kind of made my phone faster. So I removed ryanzas and put on the voodoo, and found I could still apply ryanzas, so I did and my phone is super fast. At least I feel like its faster. So for the devs I know this isnt a q&a but is this actually working, and can u guys apply this into ur future work?

curious what tests have you run to determine it is indeed faster? I need to go back and read through Ryanzas lagfix but from memory I thought it created an EXT partition just as the Voodoo lag fix does.
If this is the case there would be no speed improvement as your system is only using one EXT partition so running the 2nd lagfix does nothing or changes the size of the EXT partition created by Voodoo.

Ok so all I do is try to make my phone faster when I have time. But I partioned my sd on my mytouch with amon ra then I put my sd on ext 4. Than I ran the voodoo lag fix using the the deodex rom. Voodoo lag fix put my quadrant scores at 1700 about which seems realistic. Because with ryanzas I was getting 2400-2500. But I only had 500mb of app space left bcuz of the partition. But after voodoo I have 1.4mb and I ran ryan zas on top of that and I have the same 1.4mb left. I think I can run both because the voodoo lag fix is a system partition and ryanzas is only virtual. At least thats what I think thats why im asking for help. But I run about about 2000 to 2100 on my quandrant scores and my phone has no lag at all.
I say try it if u can because my phone has never been faster. I dont know why it works but I believe it does because I can see and feel a difference in the phone. Everything runs so smooth. Its fantastic!!!!
Why stop there? Install another lagfix and I'm sure your phone will be 3X as fast!!!

Rsfaze already explained to you why it wouldn't, both of the fixes do the same thing and by doing the same fix twice they do not combine to give you double the benefit.
Imagine your hard drive is fragmented and your PC is slow, well you defragment it and it becomes faster. What you are essentially saying is that if you keep on defragmenting it it will continue to become faster which is ludicrous, unless you can post a quadrant score of 3000
Iirc the virtual ext lag fix simply cached some of the data for quicker access, and that's the increase you're seeing.

Ryanzas one click 2400 not believable but thats what quadrant says
Voodoo 1700 can see a real difference
Jacs kernal and no wake 1400 can feel diffrence mainly bcuz of overclock
Voodoo + ryanzas 2100 feels smoother and faster than just voodoo
Dont believe me than try for yourself.

I just go off of how many phone feels and what it does and it has never been snappier, my bro has same phone and he has the vodoo lag fix and we did a side by side comparison and mine was faster so I will let the people be the judge and let them try for them selves.

The voodoo lagfix uses ext4, which is a little slower but far safer. By installing ryan's virtual ext2, youve merely regained ext2's speed at the expense of ext4' safety along with the improvements gained from an optimized kernel.

Ext2 has a faster write but Ext4 has a faster read when tests where done on the two. You already mentioned the safety of ext4 which would be the journaling that Ext2 does not do.
I still don't think ext2 would be faster than ext4 but I could be wrong.

I don't get it. Why is this in the Vibrant forum at all?!!
I've just finished in working on my phone since this morning, and i'm finally completely satisfied: this is my configuration: jpo new firmware, cf root, speedmod 340 mb kernel and oclf for android 2.2. I've also removed touch wiz and installed launcher pro, bought the plus features and beautiful widgets.
It's very smooth, lag free and nice to see. quadrant score is 1796!!
Hope this helps, and sorry for my poor english!!
Alessandro
You just wait a bit, .. within a week or so most sgss will urge to lagg because of the slightly fragmenting underlaying filesystem.. so it feels =/
hehe, no idea, i just fear it .. but let's hope it's all good!
Mines flying too with Docs 7.5 jpo rom, 314mb kernel and autokiller.. i also applied the no rfs e4 lagfix lol
Until now, everithing's just fine.. anyway we'll wait and see!!
i have to agree with pijastomig
i upgraded to jpa and added z4mod (ext2) + 341mb SO kernel
i know its diff but this combo is really good even the combo pijastomig is using is too.
the phone never felt this fast, ever. tho my quadrant score is 1690 the interface is very fast, gallery opens/loads does everything really fast, call log, msgs, pretty much every thing i touch is blazing fast
im just glad i made the jump from eclair, currently very happy with the phones performance... reliable gps is next on the list and i'll be a happy guy for atleast 2011/12 if i dont get the urge to get the next big thing in line

I too use Launcher Pro and only use touchwiz to connect to keis. I don't TW but LP is just frickin awesome.

I have OCLF and SuperOneClick root, no custom kernel.
Would putting another kernel on boost my score?
forget about quadrant scores and oclf. to be blunt its plain ignorance. native ext2 or ext4 or jfs if you will are the way to go. oclf will slow down overtime not the others. quadrant value 100% bogus. forget about it. the reason is over the dev forums in countless posts if youre curious. ext4 from hardcore gives me the best perf actually and it doesnt even drain the batt anymore.

I'm guessing OCLF doesn't actually install an EXT2 kernel then?

no it doesn't, the stock kernel already supports ext2
oclf creates a ext2 partition on top of rfs instead of native ext2. it works and artificially boost quadrant scores (making scores irrelevant)
over time the underlaying rfs still lags the ext2 file system on top and you have to "reapply" lag fix to get the performance back
native does not need such tricks, it just works (and its faster overall also - just not on quadrant)
Which do you guys prefer?
When choosing Voodoo kernels or OC kernels
lagfix hands down
i prefer both at the same time.. but if i can only go with one i'd go with lagfix myself
it really doesnt matter...you COULD have both if you know what you're doin...me personally im running a lagfix....
My cpu can't handle the OC so I don't even bother. Just use a lagfix, you really don't need to overclock. It's not like we use our phones for scientific computing.
I've tryed all three ways.
I've found that some of the newer roms run just fine without either, but at the moment I'm only running overclock.(1.12 ghz)
just before this I was running 1.3 GHZ overclock and JFS advanced lagfix and I really dont see a ton of difference beyond benchmark scores and battery drainage lol.
although addmittedly it is fun to show off your benchmark scores :-D
in real life performance you probably wont notice much difference.
but try all three ways and see which you like better I'm sure some people really do have a need for overclock and lagfix, heck, if I could find a way to compile the android os from my phone I'd probably want the extra power :-D
but just find whats right for you
I am by no means an expert on this hardware, but as with any device you are only ever as fast as the system that bottle necks first. From what I have been able to gather thus far, on the Vibrant, that is I/O hands down. The rest of the hardware keeps up with most tasks quite well, and the lag fix helps to alleviate the bottlenecks in I/O by speeding up the read/write operations fairly well.
That would be where I put my money. Overclock sounds cool, but on these phones seems unnecessary.
Just my 2/100 of a $

Choosing one or the other is stupid, use both! Voodoo was a good idea months ago but it's outdated now, stop using it. Use a kernel like the one in my sig, it supports Ext4 lagfix (just like voodoo) AND overclocking, it's stable, and you won't softbrick if you flash over it.
Ok can someone explain the difference between EXT4 and the regular software the I'm running..... right now I'm using roto jmi firmware version 2, my tab feels fast, quadrant score of 1006 but I hear everyone saying converting to EXT4 will make it that much faster......

EXT4 is a filesystem, not software. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ext4
Its faster than the rfs filesystem the galaxy tab uses by default because of the way it manages **** writes.
So yeah, if you experience random lagging, this will fix it and should make it generally more fluid

Personally, I think you see more performance gains going from stock to a JMI ROM, than you will going to EXT4 from RFS on a JMI ROM.
Yes, quadrant appears much faster, but in real world usage there isn't as much difference.
So my advice is, if you're happy with what you've got, leave it alone for now.
Regards,
Dave
I disagree, I ran on a JMI rom with the original file system for about 2 weeks and then upgraded to EXT4 and I definitely noticed a speed improvement. Well worth the conversion since it only took about 10 minutes and went very smoothly.
this is my point exactly, my tab runs smooths, feels fast enough so i wonder how much faster can EXT4 make it??
i suppose theres a part of me inside thats never satisfied and even knowing that there is a possibility that i could potentially make my tab faster makes me wanna switch to EXT4.....
but i have 3 questions..
1) what does quadrant scores actually mean in real life?
2) does using EXT4 over the standard RFS effect or improve battery life?
3) and will samsung revert back to RFS if i ever decided to change roms?

In my experience, converting to EXT4 (first) made a remarkable improvement even on the stock ROM, then installing the Overcome ROM was icing on the cake.
1) quadrant scores don't mean squat (IMHO)
2) possibly -- due to more efficient I/O
3) doesn't matter -- once you do change ROMs, you will never go back to any "Samsung" (oem) ROM.

I can't really answer about Roto's for sure -- I started with the stock (JJB) ROM and first applied MoDaCo's r3 kernel
(+ext4 conversion +clockwork recovery).
The MoDaCo conversion was very easy & I rebooted back to the stock ROM with no problem -- then flashed Overcome via CWM a day or so later.
The Overcome (and MoDaCo) ROMs were meant for EXT4 specifically -- not sure about Roto's, maybe someone else can answer that. If I were you I would have the Overcome zip ready to go on the sdcard, so you can easily get back to CWM and flash it if Roto's doesn't work out.
If I switch to EXT4, will this cause a compatibility problem with my PC which runs windows vista? More specifically, can my windows vista laptop read the EXT4 formatted microSD in my gtab ?
Converting to EXT4 only converts the OS partition. It does nothing to your SD cards, which I believe are in the FAT32 file system.
....So while we are talking about EXT4...Has anyone considered EXT4 on android with consideration of read/write cycles?
Some background: I've had several netbook and still have a dell mini 9. They have always run linux (specifically fedora). All have had SSDs. SSD have (and I guess newer SSDs still have) and number of read/write cycles that are finite (before you should expect failure). This is somewhat like the mean time to failure for spinny/mechnical HDs.
There was mild concern in the netbook forums that journalling filesystems would 'encourage' premature failure of SSDs. By 'premature', I mean happen sooner than expected as journalling FSs do all sorts of read/writes for the journal maintenance....For many, my self included, it was felt that this is not a huge issue as the number of read/writes was pretty big and that you would 'grow out' of the device before the time it takes to get to the number (or the device is obsoluted).
So, SSDs are flashed based. Is the android file system devices like an SSD? No idea and I think not. I bet many internal android storage devices, including SGT's, are flash based. I suspect the read/write cycles are a characteristice of flash memory and not an SSD thing.
So are journalling filesystems (specifically ext4) a concern on andorid for this reason? For me, probably not (i'll want something new in a year anyway...)
FWIW: ext4 and probably other journalling FSs have a way to turn off the journal features. The idea is that you'd get the other good stuff of ext4, but not the excessive read/writes (i.e. wear and tear on HD or SSD). Some netbookers, opted to do this while using EXT4; I never did. I wonder if the android ext4 'stuff' has this on or off?
Well, the Samsung RFS stands for Robust FAT File System, and it is basically FAT with Journaling slapped on top for protection, so I am guessing the journaling isn't too big a problem
But, this is exactly where the problems with RFS come in, it is a rather slapped together filesystem, and the drivers are none too great either. Whereas, EXT4 is a filesystem made for linux, and all the drivers etc are a heck of a lot better.
To the OP, the major benefits come in when writing files, such as installing programs etc, which is a LOT quicker. One of the main problems with the RFS setup is it takes comparatively forever to sync/write each file to the flash because of the slapped on journaling on a filesystem not really meant for it. There is a slight increase in speed/responsiveness all around because of the more efficient I/O, but yeah that is the major benefit.
Personally, I have gone to Overcome's v1.2.0 rom and kernel, ext4 filesystem etc, and will not be looking back. I also have the good fortune of being in a household with 2 tabs, the other being my father's which he does not want to even root let alone flash, so I will be doing a video comparison between stock and mine in the next few days, for all those interested in seeing the benefits compared to stock.
anybody tried the v6 supercharger and loopy????
Yes v6 works fine, didn't really see such a great improvement in speed but I presume that's mostly just because of our phones low end spec, I prefer not to tweak so much now though so I don't use any memory tweaks anymore........
Tried v6. Didn't notice any difference at all.
Ahh the good old placebo scripts. Don't bother with them, they either don't do anything or tweak stuff that android/Linux are perfectly good at managing for themselves.

Just because there are lots of scripts in a rom doesn't make them any good.
Have you looked at what the supercharger script is doing? Do you understand the changes it makes? There are a lot of things in that script that simply do not apply to android, the rest are placebo effects or "tweaks" that do nothing for real world usage and just boost scores in quadrant.

Even if you do go for the V6 Script,a bit of advice - stay away from the network / 3g tweaks. There are quite a few not-so-happy endings on the Wildfire forum for people who used them. (Which involved using an RUU to go back to a stock sense ROM, rerooting and coming back to CM)
I respect everyone's view on this kind of stuff and each to there own. Here's my take on them.
After numerous attempts of getting v6 to run I managed it only to have it screw my phone up totally and as 3xeno stated I had a ballache getting my phone back lol.
Juuwes script thing was easy to install but I seriously couldn't tell you if it was doing anything as I noticed no improvement.
Now at the times when everyone was going mad for these kind of tweaks I came across an app called autokiller memory optimizer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1267425
To this day I swear by this little beauty. Some may say I be under the placebo spell but I doubt it with the amount of times I've run my phone with and without the app through numerous scenarios and I always end up setting it back up again. To me this is my preferred method as I can set exactly what I want tweaking, lower certain apps oom levels and set totally custom low memory kill levels too,I've yet to see a script that gives me that control.!!! The advanced options are very good too e.g changing my sdread speed and lowering my wifi scan time. Ok enough of the selling lol I have no connection to this app or the dev but I seriously recommend everyone to try it. Hey if its not for you then go try one of the others mentioned.
