Acer Icona or ASUS Eepad

My birthday is next weekend and the fiance is thinking about purchasing a tablet for me. The Flyer is another option, however I'm thinking the dual cores may not get outdated as quickly. Unfortunately the Xoom is a little too much.

Despite some of the little quirks, the Asus is a solid tablet. Beautiful hardware quality.

Transformer has the best value for your fiance's money. Unless you can't live without a USB port built into the tablet, you can't beat the price for what you get. I love mine, can't imagine not having it now

Actually finding it next to impossible to locate the ASUS in stock. Sounds like I may be picking up a Galaxy Tab 10.1 on launch day. No Touchwiz and from the reviews sounds like it's the bomb.

ASUS has been ramping up production and supposed to be able to deliver enough for demand this month. So hopefully they start popping up before the tab

ASUS is dual-core, too.
Let me tell you this, the Iconia is junk. I played with it in store right next to the Transformer. The Iconia feels cheap, looks cheap, is thicker than the Xoom, the software is UGH, and the bootloader is locked down tighter than a royal virgin with a metal chastity belt. The development community is NOT behind this device like the TF101 and Xoom.
The ASUS feels great, it's noticeably lighter than both the Xoom and the Iconia. ASUS's significant lack of messing with the UI makes it great, imo. It has some good bundled apps that are actually useful unlike most other bundled apps. The screen is beautiful since it's an IPS display. Very responsive on 3.1 and fast.
I'm an ASUS fanboy but for very good reasons - they never fail to disappoint in quality. I love the Transformer over the Xoom and the Iconia. It's worth the $550 to get it with the keyboard dock. If the keyboard, touchpad, and 16 hours of total battery life don't sway you, then I don't know what will. Netarchy is also developing kernels for it.
As a previous owner of a Nook Color and a current owner of a Transformer, there's no competition. Don't go for the GTab or anything else. The Transformer is the best deal out there for bang for buck. It outperforms and out-classes all of the current Honeycomb tablets and is miles better than any of the Froyo/Gingerbread tablets. The only thing I find wanting is being able to use something like the HTC Scribe with it.

EEE Pad looks amazing!

definitely the eee pad. i have it and it's awesome. the dock is nice addition, and you'll need it for the USB (at least until the dedicated usb adapters are released)
rooting is not as easy as the shift, and you can only do it under certain firmwares (namely the stock) so don't do any updates until you do (you can always downgrade to the right firmware, but that's just additional steps you probably want to avoid). as tempted as you might be to jump immidiately to 3.1 (which btw, the iconia do not have yet, it's gonna come out eventually, but asus beat them to the punch)
there's some prevalent issues with it though, which if you have OCD, might drive you crazy, but if you're somewhere near normal, should be tolerable. the most prevalent issue being light bleed around the lower-left-to-right and right side. depending on how lucky you are, it might not even be there. and if you're unlucky, you'll only see it when you're screen is show black around the edges, and you have brightness set to 100%.
lastly, although the TF is now coming in stock, it's still a bit of a lottery whether or not you can actually find it in store. http://www.nowinstock.net is your friend.

I have a cr48, and it's been great, but since I hacked it and installed ubuntu, I rarely boot up the chrome os... It boots damn near as fast as it did before and I can do a lot more

Is Xoom the answer?

Hello all.
I am a owner of a new Asus Transformer Prime (it's my first tablet). I'm really frustrated with a few issues; mainly the wifi is spotty and the GPS is barely functional. I'm debating on whether or not I should return it and get a Xoom.
I know the Prime has a few better specs (super IPS, quad-core), but I would rather have a dependable and fully-functioning device than the latest and greatest with some issues that need to be kinked out.
Are there any annoying issues with Xoom or should I just pull the trigger?
Edit: Returned the Prime and got the Xoom. I've had it for a couple days now; I like it much better than the Prime. Everything works and the build quality is better.

You'll be disappointed with the screen coming from IPS. Going from the Xoom to the Xyboard, the screen quality difference is night and day. The Xoom will also be noticeably slower I'm sure, though it's better with some of the ICS builds out there. Does custom roms matter to you or do you want a tablet that has high build quality and works damned well? Xyboard would be my answer if it's the latter, unless you're considering the Xoom because of budget or for custom roms.

I have owned the Wifi only Xoom since April and it was already my third Android tablet. I had wanted to buy the original transformer, but they weren't available, so I bought the Xoom, and I'm so glad I did!
The Xoom has a super build, great wifi and real, not 'assisted,' gps, fast dual core cpu that can be overclocked up to 1.7 ghz (I can run stable at 1.6) with custom Honeycomb roms/kernels and active ICS development. My screen is just fine...naturalistic colors won't pop your eyes out, but a non-glare screen protector makes it easier to see in sunlight. That's not been a problem for me. In case you can't tell, I love my Xoom. Some of these guys just want newest/fastest and couldn't care less about what really works.

I have both and definitely returning this second prime I have. The xoom might be slower in what, game?! maybe, not that I notice. Benchmark I could careless, more interested real world performance. The xoom with 5 megapixel camera is better in my comparison, beside megapixel means nada. Xoom video recording in low light blows the Prime out the water, high light doesn't matter they all perform well, hell even my 2 year old Evo 4 g is good in high or day light. Only thing I like about the prime over the xoom is super IPS for outdoor, weight, and battery (a bit better than the xoom). But with the screen bleed, dead pixel on both unit I have, flipping non usable GPS, IMO the Prime RIGHT now is not worth the high price. I got my xoom a couple week ago from best buy open box for 348.
If you can get the xoom for cheap I say go for it. if your paying over 400 I say wait til the problem for Prime to get sorted out or wait for something to drop after CES, that's my thought.

Well, I returned the prime and got the wifi xoom for 399. Better product. Really happy with it!
Looking forward to overclocking this thing. I know that Google has released AOSP ICS for the xoom... looking forward to messing with that too.
The internet speed is EXTREMELY faster on the Xoom. The browsing experience is much better.
I went through the GPS fiasco with the Galaxy S. I have learned not to tolerate a malfunctioning device with hope that the bug can/will be fixed through an OTA.

Great choice...I don't think you'll regret it. There are lots of resources/guides for rooting/flashing custom roms/kernels, including the quite stable ICS alpha nightlies, and I think you'll enjoy your Xoom for quite a while to come.

I would have stuck it out cause once the few launch issues are fixed it will be an awesome tablet. I understand the budget and wanting in on the tablet fun now though. The xoom is really easily the next choice. I like it and I can't wait to see how much better it gets with ICS coming from motorola to fix the last few items missing.

Thanks! I've been playing with it for a few hours now and I love it so far. The Prime had a better screen but the Xoom seems to be a solid device. The Prime had touch screen issues, GPS issues, WiFi issues, the SINGLE speaker was too quiet, and the Xoom is much more comfortable to hold. The Prime's thin, tapered edges gave it an awkward feeling.
I'm going to mess around with it stock for a few days and then I'm going to dig into the development section.

When I first bought my Galaxy S, there were issues with lag and GPS. I "stuck it out" thinking that the issues would be fixed with OTA's and development. They haven't. Like I said in the OP, I have learned my lesson and won't put up with a product that malfunctions on day of purchase.

Then you would have sold your xoom on its initial release. Don't get me wrong I love my xoom...but would have gladly traded it for your prime

What was wrong with the Xoom on release? And yes, I would have returned the Xoom if it wasn't working properly either. Its dumb to keep a device that is flawed until you're certain that it can/will be fixed. That isn't the case for the Prime. Considering that the Prime's WiFi gets 1/10 of the speeds as my phone and Xoom (in addition to cutting out completely) it was very frustrating to use. There was also a non-functional GPS, touch screen response issues, yellow/washed out screen, and too many force closes. Who knows which if these issues are fixable and will be fixed. Comparing the Xoom and Prime in their CURRENT state, the Xoom is better.
A device needs more than fancy hardware to work properly.
Edit: Oh, and the single speaker on the Prime is horrible.

@Skinien: glad to hear you're enjoying your new Xoom, bro. Of the 1st generation crop of 10.1" Honeycomb tablets the Xoom is, IMHO, the most well-rounded of the bunch as far as function and, to a lesser extent, form. I was all but dead set on buying a Transformer Prime until reading about your experience with it.

@LatinMaxima: I agree. I flashed an ICS ROM for a few minutes a few days ago and loved it. The little pet peeves I have with Honeycomb like having to refresh the GMail widgets and the Market two or three times before each use are fixed. It looks and feels much more polished but the lack of camera functionality and bluetooth are dealbreakers for me so it's Honeycomb until those issues are fixed.
For now, my Xoom serves my needs well and will stay with me...pending any upcoming CES and MWC announcements.

The Touchpad was really a niche device in comparison. I always felt like it was a half baked product - and apparently so did HP because of that cost cutting they did.

Native android devices will always run better than ported devices.

If you can get a decent price for the touchpad (~150) and can then front the rest of the cash for a used xoom (50-100), I would recommend it. The Xoom has a lot more going for it than the touchpad.

I had a touchpad running android for about 8 months. Just got a XOOM a couple of weeks ago. I LOVED the touchpad, but I wouldn't go back. Xoom is equal to or better than it in all things, plus it's native.
Touchpad has Wifi issues and random screen unresponsiveness issues when running any ROM of the many I tried.
They were'nt deal breakers and happened rarely, but the Xoom doesn't have the same issues. Also, XOOM has external SD and HELLA BETTER battery life.
Touchpad was a 6 hours of heavy use then charge for 8 hours device. Xoom is a 12 hours of heavy use then charge for 1 hour device.

That what I would have speculated the outcome would have been. I don't know that the Xoom would be that much better but a native Android device (especially a GED should be significantly better.)

Well, if you've the right ROM, the Xoom is one hell of an overclockable monster.

Motorolas build quality is by far superior. Hp makes good computers; however the Kindle Fire is a better tablet than Hp touchpad. Not being rude. My gf has had them both, one bought by me and the other her mom. My mom has the XOOM family edition and it is q very nice tablet. Everything that you would want in a tablet.

I own both a 32 GB HP Touchpad (which I'm now selling) and a 32GB Verizon 3G Motorola Xoom I just bought refurbished from Daily Steals a couple weeks ago. If I were you, I would go ahead and get yourself a Xoom. Here's my thoughts on the two devices compared:
Screen
The colors on the HP Touchpad are beautiful, and are vastly superior to the Xoom (which honestly looks washed out in comparison), though the Xoom has the high screen resolution (and is slightly larger), which is important to me. Responsiveness I haven't found to be very different--the CM9 build I was running on my Touchpad was exceptionally smooth for the most part, so I'd say that the Xoom isn't a major improvement, but your results may vary depending on your experience with the ROMs you've been running on your Touchpad. Touchpad/Xoom draw, or perhaps a slight advantage to the Xoom, but it will depend on what you want.
Battery Life
Battery Life on the Xoom is superior, no doubt. Xoom win.
Hardware/Build
I personally liked the hardware on the Touchpad just fine--I felt it had good build quality, and it was nice and light. The Xoom is also very well built, however, and I prefer the metal case. I will say the Xoom's volume buttons are a bit more difficult to press than the Touchpad's, but this isn't a big deal to me. The Xoom is also a bit heavier, but not enough to be a problem. Xoom win (only slightly, IMO).
Accessories (Case)
Yes, this matters to me. The OEM case I had for the Touchpad was perfect. It conformed to the shape of the tablet perfectly, and covered the entire device without limiting button functionality. The screen cover also doubled as a nice stand for the tablet, which I used extensively. I bought that case for $20. I have not found a case that is anywhere near as good for the Xoom, though I do like the one I finally found (Bear Motion Leather Case http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ZAZMKE/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00). Touchpad win here (again, IMO. You may find a case that works better for your needs)
Speakers
The speakers on the Touchpad sounded much better, and their placement I found to be more convenient (at the bottom of the tablet). The Xoom's speakers are decent, though their placement on the back of the device is not entirely ideal. Touchpad win.
Usability
This is the biggest reason I am ditching my Touchpad for the Xoom. The Touchpad's camera does not work on any Android build, while the Xoom has two you can choose from (both front facing and rear facing). My Touchpad also experienced Force Closes on many apps randomly, and I would often have to restart my device. Additionally, I ran into many apps on the Touchpad that were not compatible, and I could not even install. The Xoom has a big win here, because, as a native Android device, I don't have any of these issues.
Anyhow, these are just my two cents, as somebody who just moved from the Touchpad to the Xoom. I still really like the Touchpad, and it was a great, cheap way to get into Android tablets, but the Xoom was a good step up. If I could tolerate a 7" screen, I would have grabbed the Nexus 7, but I really prefer the larger screen size.
I think you'd do well to get yourself a Xoom. I love mine, and don't regret the move one bit.

Pros:
Itś very thin and the weight is really light. iś very responsive and the android 4.0 works right. The camera is better than I expected and it does not overhead too much (and just from the right side). And of course its price , it is a real good price!!! The shippment was good, it was free and it took about 12 days to come to USA, so it was really good!!! (And it has not problem going through customs).
Cons:
Sometimes gets a little slow or freeze but not much, in theses cases you just have to wait or to close some apps and it will become normal again. You have to think that it is not a top tablet, as you can see by the screen or the graphics but anyway I have to say that both are really good for this price.
Also I have problems with the charger, it didnt work but it doesnt matter, beacuse it can be charge with a mini usb charger, so it is perfect!!!!

Wow. $60! Yeah the screen resolution is as low as it gets but my kids don't care. I might order them for Christmas for my kids so my wife and I can use our N7s once in a while.

I upgraded to a Nexus 7 and gave this one to my lil girl. She LOVES this thing. Low resolution be damned. Temple Run and Angry Birds are her favorites. Plus I slapped a couple doodling apps on there and some educational stuff for her ABC's and numbers. It'd be a great gift.

I bought this tablet from aliexpress. Also $59.30 (cover and shipment to spain included). It works ok for its price, but it has no GPS (this is for the one who asked it). Now I'm trying to root it and perhaps try another rom (still looking). If anybody's got more info it would be appreciated.

My impressions:
Screen: Nice and comfortable. Better than expected.

I have one, from the same geekbuying link posted in the first post. Definitely not screaming fast (wish I could downgrade to GB), but it works. I have not had good luck with getting the Google Market to run, so I have sideloaded everything.
The good news, it is already rooted. You won't find an su type app in the app drawer, but you can run apps that require root. The thing never bothers to ask you if you will grant root to the app. It just assumes you do
I'd like to find an updated ROM, but for now, as a 1-2 app device, it does the job.

Just do it...

Don't see how some people are on the fence. The screen alone is worth the price of admission. Pictures and videos look very sharp and realistic. Other than that it's super fast, and very light.

Kindles suck. If you don't root, the only thing they have going for them
Is prime video. The launcher sucks, the app content on the amazon appstore is laughable. I'd buy the n7 I bet the specs aren't far off and you get an aosp tablet with the latest upgrades

I don't like them either, but I doubt that they "suck". Not everyone uses a tablet the same way as you do. Some people who are wedded to Amazon's ecosystem will simply never leverage the full capabilities of a "stock" Android ecosystem. Sure, the Kindle locks down a lot of things (a little a la iOS), but as we've seen both approaches can be successful with consumers.

Actually just returned mine back to BestBuy. At the end of the day I really didn't/don't need a tablet. Convinced myself that I did and had this bug to go get one (combined with all the hype). Fine, got one and then what... I already have a Note 2 that I do most stuff on, so this would just be a stretched out duplicatory device in the end.
If I didn't already have the Note 2 I would have kept it. Nice screen, easy to hold in one hand etc, but honestly it would have ended up just being used when on the toilet..

I guess a gnote2 is nearly a tablet. Still, I think it makes a lot of sense to carry around a small tablet like the n7 so you can really immerse yourself in media (movies, reading, games) and have your smart phone for communication purposes, which also means for battery saving purposes. I know that the Note 2 has a huge battery, but not one sufficiently large to negate the benefit of having a secondary device for entertainment purposes. Another thing that comes to mind is that it's simply convenient to be able to make or receive a phone call or respond to a facebook message without interrupting your current game session and having to switch to a different app (as you would have to if you relied on a single device for all your technology needs at a given moment).

I already have the Nook HD+ 32gb for $80 less and has SD slot, plus dead simple to root and mod. Literally as easy as rebooting with an sd card to root and flash the roms.
Too many game roms, media and comics to not have the 64gb card in place. Clouds are not practical compared to local storage.
Still, I am tempted. Just not seeing how $80 more and less storage makes sense. I compared them a lot, but game emulators, media and comics perform the same. Difference in favor for comics goes to the Nook and newer 3D games like Asphalt 7 and Nova 3 go to the N7.
If the N7 had an sd slot, I would agree already.

I've got a Note 2 and an Asus Infinity (10.1" tablet), but i still bought the '13 N7. No, I never use all 3 at once. Actually, I'll probably never use just 1 as much as most people who don't have multiple devices. That said, they each have their strong points, and I use them each in different situations. Just depends on what I'm wanting to do at the moment. Everyone has their own wants an needs though, sorry that it didn't work out for ya.
