[Q] Does Acer A500 supports edge modem? - Acer Iconia A500

I have an edge modem that need gsm sim to get connected with the internet. Will the acer A500 work with it?

not in STOCK
support MAYBE if
- rooted
- modify some file in A500
- get lucky
I was wondering, people using the tablet doesn't have a phone ?
tethering the phone with the tablet is much more easy (by wifi)
A500 -> wifi -> phone -> EDGE/3G

[Q] iconia 3G connection from My Phone as Xoom

Hi all,
I would like to know if it's possible to connect my Iconia A500 with the 3G connection from my mobilePhone like it's possible on the Xoom, (tethering)
is it possible to get the file from the Xoom to activate this feature on the iconia?
on the PDF manual from Acer, we can see in settings "tethering and portable hotspot" and "mobile network", but no access to these settings on my iconia
does something special to do to access or activate them?

Hi,
Its not the iconia that needs software, its the phone.
Set it up as hotspot/wifi tether, the iconia will pick it up in wifi settings, just touch it and connect to it.
Not sure what version built in hotspot/tether starts, but my blade has 2.3.3 CM7RC2 and it is built into the cyanogen settings within the phone settings.
Hope this helps, if not it is still probably clear as mud

@MJ-12
at first, many thanks for your very fast reply,
but, i must specify than the 3G connection via Tethering like the Xoom, is via Bluetooth,
it's maybe not fast as Wifi? i'll try this method, but that's what i used on my Archos 70it in native and it was pretty good, no soft to lunch on the phone.
if someone know how we must do for a BT method...
for information my mobile is a Nokia N8, so it must be possible.
Ah ok now i get you, i see what you mean now.
Unfortunately i am not familiar with n8 or symbian so that is as far as i can go.
Hope there is an n8/iconia owner out there who can help you soon.
Regards...

About the connection via BT, the advantage is that it's the tablet lunching the connection, and when is no more needed it stop automatically,
also with the wifi hotspot, you need to stop the connection yourself.
I used to own a N8 before switching to a DHD.
At that time I was using the application from 3W joiku dot com that turned my N8 into Wifi Hotspot.
Keep in mind that bluetooth is quite slow ( 1 Mb max ) SFR does provide 3 to 5 Mb/s of bandwith ... so bluetooth is really not the option you want to go for , uneless you want make you surfing experience as slow as possible.
I have downloaded Dolphin Browser HD on my iconia , because there is an easy option to change its user agent ( I set it to : Iphone) this way I can use the 3G connection provided by my DHD on SFR without letting them know that I am using my phone as a modem , and as a result of this I don't get charged of course ;-)
@hiroko83
can you connect your iconia to your N8 via joikuspot? 'cause i'd tryed and my iconia doesn't found my joikuspot hotspot.
can you giving to me your joikuspot soft version and wich parameters you'd used for you hotspot, and how to detect hotspot on iconia?

Your phone will create a Ad-hoc hotspot. However the iconia cannot connect to ad-hoc hotspots without a new wpa_supplicant (it's not working in stock android). SO you need to root and replace the wpa_supplicant before this will work. Check the development thread for instructions.
We're all waiting for the custom roms when this will all be fixed...
many thanks all for your help, i'd changed my wpa_supplicant as you told, and it works perfectally,
BUT, Not for the native web browser, for this one, you need to type:
about:debug [enter]
going in settings, débug, and select in UAstring something else than Android or Desktop.
i'd choose, Froyo of course ;P
many thanks all. it was a big problem for me, a tablet without internet!? useless.
********** UPDATE *************
some applications seems to be down as "facebook for android (no feeds, but chat works fine)" "native webbrowser (with the most of user Agent)" "Firefox"
i suppose that's my mobile provider SFR who limit access to some ports used by the apps.
please advise if it's different at yours to know if it's my iconia, my manipulation, or my mobile operator.

USB 3g for a500 wifi only

HI
I just got my a500 - 32gb
Is there a way or work around to connect my USB 3g to my a500 wifi only?
I really dont want to root it.
Anyone?
Thanks,

[Q] Rooted! need help with wifi hotspot

So - rooted my Virgin Mobile Samsung Intercept (running froyo) and just got lucky enough to get a Acer Iconia Tablet (a500 32gb model) and would *love* to be able to use my intercept as a hot spot.
Downloaded Barnacle (and a few others) to my intercept - can start barnacle with no warnings or error messages from my Intercept - i get the message letting me know it is beaconing - but no matter what I try I cannot connect from my a500 (or other devices I tried for troubleshooting; my girlfriends Samsung Intercept and my friends Evo 4 do not see my hotspot.
Long post made short; any one out there got the rooted 2.2 ROM working as hotspot? Would be grateful for some help.
Barnacle wi-fi in ad-hoc mode so that's probably one of the reasons your devices could not detect the signal. Since you have rooted your phone, what Rom or Kernal is it running on?
Thanks for responding!
My intercept is running stock 2.2 from Virgin Mobile - rooted and cleaned out some of the more worthless apps it ships with.
Intercept-
Build number - froyo.ec07
Kernel version - 2.6.32.9
Android version - 2.2.2
Acer Iconia A500 (WiFi only tablet)
Android Version - 3.0.1
Kernel version - 2.6.36.3
Build number - 1.144.07
I feel I may be going at it all wrong - have read a few threads claiming the a500 supports connecting to an ad-hoc connection, some say it does not. Would think my next step would be to head over to the a500 section and see about getting the a500 to support ad-hoc.
Will be by a friends laptop with wifi in a few mins, will test barnacle there to verify I even have it working right in the first place
Tested!
My intercept is not the issue - was able to connect to my hotspot via a windows box.
So now to find out if the a500 can be convinced to connect to ad-hoc.
Search Hotspot Widget by Harold Muller on the market. Says it's a widget, not a tethering app, but my acer a500, rooted nook color, and laptop all connect perfectly to my stock Optimus V on virgin mobile

hmmmmm
Now I am confused. Does the virgin mobile phone you have support proper infrastructure hotspot, or only ad-hoc via a rooted phone (like mine?)
From what I read, I need to mess with the wpa supplciant here on the a500 to get it to even connect to an ad-hoc network, I am a little nervous about trying it - some users reporting broken wifi and other pains.
Honestly, I dont know. Neither acer nor virgin mobile phone is rooted, but I tried this and it worked without having to change anything on either device. I put the widget on phone home screen to toggle it on, then scan wifi with acer and connect. I also secured it with a password. For $25/mo, this vmobile service is kicking att butt.

hmmmm.
Sounds like your phone already has hotspot unlocked - which lets you run a normal infrastructure wifi hotspot - the intercept requires root to function as a hotspot, and even then it will be a ad-hoc network, which the a500 cannot connect to without a bit of patching some system files
Infrastructure Mode wi-fi
On rooted Intercept, Infrastructure Mode wi-fi is much better:
Infrastructure Mode 100% [Simplified]
Holy crap!
Educate: you just made my day. Works like a charm. Thank you ever so much - my Iconia tablet can now connect to my Intercept hotspot - and it works! Tested with multiple applications.
Thank you again for helping me. Very awesome of you!
Or.. do like I did.. install ultimate kernal v3 and then download wireless tether.. works great..

[Q] A500 wifi connection - Help Needed

hi,
i'm french using freebox ADSL modem (Full dégroupé) V5. I've bought an Acer Iconia 500...all was great no problem with wifi connection.
I've just changed 5 days ago my frebbox V5 for the new one the V6...and then no more wifi connection for my Iconia A500.
I don't understand because all parameters of the V5 freebox are pushed by the free management operator's site in the new one.
I've checked in the freebox management software all informations are the same like old version.
All my others PC (notebooks & Netbooks) or Smartphones (Samsung Galaxy S) find and can use the wifi signal of the new Freebox.
In this new box (Freebox) diffrence is just an 802.11n implementation (V5 = G mode).
I've tried to downsize wifi signal from N to G, but problem still continue.
Has some one an idea or solution???
Thank you all for your help.
BR
Marc
Is there an option to set the network to Ad-Hoc or Infrastructure? The A500 can not use Ad-Hoc, so you need to set it to Infrastructure. If the A500 does not even display the network, then this is probably the problem. I had the same problem when using my iPhone as an access point. All other pcs could see the network except the A500.
if there is a reset button on the modem, just pressed it and reset all settings..
my friends problem gone with that..

[Q] A500 Voice telephony through 3G stick

Here's what I have:
Acer Iconia A500 running Civato's Flexstriker ROM
Huawei e153 3G USB stick
I can send REAL SMS using my SIM card through GOSms without any problems but I want to be able to do GSM calls too. I know that the USB stick is compatible because I already tried calling my house when the 3G stick is connected to the PC. I think the problem is the Iconia A500 doesn't have phone.apk and telephony.apk. I tried downloading them from other sources but it's not compatible. If anyone is interested and able to help, thanks a lot!!!
