Hi all,
I would like to know if it's possible to connect my Iconia A500 with the 3G connection from my mobilePhone like it's possible on the Xoom, (tethering)
is it possible to get the file from the Xoom to activate this feature on the iconia?
on the PDF manual from Acer, we can see in settings "tethering and portable hotspot" and "mobile network", but no access to these settings on my iconia
does something special to do to access or activate them?

Hi,
Its not the iconia that needs software, its the phone.
Set it up as hotspot/wifi tether, the iconia will pick it up in wifi settings, just touch it and connect to it.
Not sure what version built in hotspot/tether starts, but my blade has 2.3.3 CM7RC2 and it is built into the cyanogen settings within the phone settings.
Hope this helps, if not it is still probably clear as mud

@MJ-12
at first, many thanks for your very fast reply,
but, i must specify than the 3G connection via Tethering like the Xoom, is via Bluetooth,
it's maybe not fast as Wifi? i'll try this method, but that's what i used on my Archos 70it in native and it was pretty good, no soft to lunch on the phone.
if someone know how we must do for a BT method...
for information my mobile is a Nokia N8, so it must be possible.
Ah ok now i get you, i see what you mean now.
Unfortunately i am not familiar with n8 or symbian so that is as far as i can go.
Hope there is an n8/iconia owner out there who can help you soon.
Regards...

About the connection via BT, the advantage is that it's the tablet lunching the connection, and when is no more needed it stop automatically,
also with the wifi hotspot, you need to stop the connection yourself.
I used to own a N8 before switching to a DHD.
At that time I was using the application from 3W joiku dot com that turned my N8 into Wifi Hotspot.
Keep in mind that bluetooth is quite slow ( 1 Mb max ) SFR does provide 3 to 5 Mb/s of bandwith ... so bluetooth is really not the option you want to go for , uneless you want make you surfing experience as slow as possible.
I have downloaded Dolphin Browser HD on my iconia , because there is an easy option to change its user agent ( I set it to : Iphone) this way I can use the 3G connection provided by my DHD on SFR without letting them know that I am using my phone as a modem , and as a result of this I don't get charged of course ;-)
@hiroko83
can you connect your iconia to your N8 via joikuspot? 'cause i'd tryed and my iconia doesn't found my joikuspot hotspot.
can you giving to me your joikuspot soft version and wich parameters you'd used for you hotspot, and how to detect hotspot on iconia?

Your phone will create a Ad-hoc hotspot. However the iconia cannot connect to ad-hoc hotspots without a new wpa_supplicant (it's not working in stock android). SO you need to root and replace the wpa_supplicant before this will work. Check the development thread for instructions.
We're all waiting for the custom roms when this will all be fixed...
many thanks all for your help, i'd changed my wpa_supplicant as you told, and it works perfectally,
BUT, Not for the native web browser, for this one, you need to type:
about:debug [enter]
going in settings, débug, and select in UAstring something else than Android or Desktop.
i'd choose, Froyo of course ;P
many thanks all. it was a big problem for me, a tablet without internet!? useless.
********** UPDATE *************
some applications seems to be down as "facebook for android (no feeds, but chat works fine)" "native webbrowser (with the most of user Agent)" "Firefox"
i suppose that's my mobile provider SFR who limit access to some ports used by the apps.
please advise if it's different at yours to know if it's my iconia, my manipulation, or my mobile operator.

I'm giving up :-(
I tried all kind of things but seems that's impossible to share my 3G connection from my SE X10 mini pro to my Transformer 16Gb (updated to 3.1):
this is what I learned:
- using barnacle app is not working because android 3.1 cannot see ad-hoc WIFI spot, i wish someone can customize 3.1 FW to get this function implemented (there should be some kind of WPA-supplicant to add to the FW)
- apps like PDAnet and Easy tether don't work either!
- using wifi tether is no point bacause the X10MP kernel doesn't support netfilter, and it doesn't seem to be any X10MP rom that support this thing (if anyone knows one, please tell me, now I'm using MiniCM based on Froyo 2.2.1 with Kernel [email protected]#1)
anyone had any luck in tethering these two devices?
Thanks in advance.
What happens eveytime you try to connect? Have you tried using the "wireless tether" app?

yes i tried the wireless tether app but i get the "No Netfilter! Sorry, but your kernel does not have all necessary features for running this application", if i skip this message i can pair the two devices (via BT) and see the tethering service available on my X10 MP, but the problem is i cannot connect to the net... because of the net filter error.
exactly! ad hoc networks are not visible either in 3.0.1 or 3.1
finally i succeed in tethering with my ASUS Transformer and X10 Mini Pro
using barnacle wifi tether (http://it.appbrain.com/app/barnacle-wifi-tether/net.szym.barnacle)
and those guides:
PRIMORDIAL 3.1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1106587)
and
WPA_SUPPLICANT (http://www.android-support.com/guide-enable-ad-hoc-tethering-on-your-transformer-needs-root/)
now i'm rooted, tethered and happy
if you root your mini pro you can download quick settings and get the wifi hot spot option..rooting mini pro is a whole lot easier than the TF.

Tried pdanet-tablet yet?
So - rooted my Virgin Mobile Samsung Intercept (running froyo) and just got lucky enough to get a Acer Iconia Tablet (a500 32gb model) and would *love* to be able to use my intercept as a hot spot.
Downloaded Barnacle (and a few others) to my intercept - can start barnacle with no warnings or error messages from my Intercept - i get the message letting me know it is beaconing - but no matter what I try I cannot connect from my a500 (or other devices I tried for troubleshooting; my girlfriends Samsung Intercept and my friends Evo 4 do not see my hotspot.
Long post made short; any one out there got the rooted 2.2 ROM working as hotspot? Would be grateful for some help.
Barnacle wi-fi in ad-hoc mode so that's probably one of the reasons your devices could not detect the signal. Since you have rooted your phone, what Rom or Kernal is it running on?
Thanks for responding!
My intercept is running stock 2.2 from Virgin Mobile - rooted and cleaned out some of the more worthless apps it ships with.
Intercept-
Build number - froyo.ec07
Kernel version - 2.6.32.9
Android version - 2.2.2
Acer Iconia A500 (WiFi only tablet)
Android Version - 3.0.1
Kernel version - 2.6.36.3
Build number - 1.144.07
I feel I may be going at it all wrong - have read a few threads claiming the a500 supports connecting to an ad-hoc connection, some say it does not. Would think my next step would be to head over to the a500 section and see about getting the a500 to support ad-hoc.
Will be by a friends laptop with wifi in a few mins, will test barnacle there to verify I even have it working right in the first place
Tested!
My intercept is not the issue - was able to connect to my hotspot via a windows box.
So now to find out if the a500 can be convinced to connect to ad-hoc.
Search Hotspot Widget by Harold Muller on the market. Says it's a widget, not a tethering app, but my acer a500, rooted nook color, and laptop all connect perfectly to my stock Optimus V on virgin mobile
Sent from my VM670 using XDA App
hmmmmm
Now I am confused. Does the virgin mobile phone you have support proper infrastructure hotspot, or only ad-hoc via a rooted phone (like mine?)
From what I read, I need to mess with the wpa supplciant here on the a500 to get it to even connect to an ad-hoc network, I am a little nervous about trying it - some users reporting broken wifi and other pains.
Honestly, I dont know. Neither acer nor virgin mobile phone is rooted, but I tried this and it worked without having to change anything on either device. I put the widget on phone home screen to toggle it on, then scan wifi with acer and connect. I also secured it with a password. For $25/mo, this vmobile service is kicking att butt.
Sent from my VM670 using XDA App
hmmmm.
Sounds like your phone already has hotspot unlocked - which lets you run a normal infrastructure wifi hotspot - the intercept requires root to function as a hotspot, and even then it will be a ad-hoc network, which the a500 cannot connect to without a bit of patching some system files
Infrastructure Mode wi-fi
On rooted Intercept, Infrastructure Mode wi-fi is much better:
Infrastructure Mode 100% [Simplified]
Holy crap!
Educate: you just made my day. Works like a charm. Thank you ever so much - my Iconia tablet can now connect to my Intercept hotspot - and it works! Tested with multiple applications.
Thank you again for helping me. Very awesome of you!
Or.. do like I did.. install ultimate kernal v3 and then download wireless tether.. works great..

What I'd like to accomplish is to access the Internet through my cell phone's data service using Bluetooth, not WiFi.
I've tested, and it is possible on other Honeycomb tablets (ie., Eee Pad, Galaxy Tab, both with HC 3.2. On those, I can go through the bluetooth settings screen while connected to my cell phone, and the tethering profile is available, but it is not on my Acer A500.
It seems as though at least one custom ROM solves this: The PRIMEE ROM with David's Mod lists 'enhanced network driver (tethering enabled for Bluetooth / wifi / usb)' among it's features, seen here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1201802
I am willing to root and maybe install a different kernel, but would like to keep the software as close to stock as I can. Is it possible to get this feature on the A500 without flashing a whole new ROM?
Much thanks to any pointers or solutions.
This is the only ROM that has it for iconia and everything works perfect for me.
http://www.tegraowners.com/
I am running latest version of
Thor Transformer Revolver 3.6 port v7
Thank you very much, though I am looking to avoid flashing a new ROM altogether.
Any further information is greatly appreciated.
I looked for the same thing for over a month and it looks like the profile cant be exported or imported.
That is really your only option.
good luck
Thanks again, you may have saved me a bunch of mucking around (though I did spend much time Googling...) Have you by chance tried any other ROMs recently?
I have tried all the ROM's out there for A500 for the same reason as you.
I wanted to Bluetooth tether to my iPhone.
Only the transformer has the option and Xoom, but Xoom with their latest release broke the function, so any ROM coming from xoom will have the option but not connect.
again the Thor ROM is awesome ROM and works great.
and he is always providing updates and keeping in touch with the users on his site.
good luck
Hm. Im trying Thor's ROM now, and it kinda sucks that my camera no longer works, the backlight isn't automatic anymore, sound doesnt seem tobe as crisp, and the battery seems to be discharging way more quickly. I'll probably end up going back to my original rooted/stock. Oh well, thanks anyway.
That is not true
everything works perfect, including the camera and sound, did you grab the latest version? only back lite sensor does not work, which is same for other roms as well.
beside that everything else works perfect.
make sure you are grabbing the right one, Thor transformer revolver 3.6 V8 and also update you kernel to A500/501 Kernel 3.7 Android 3.2 + the-rest: for roms with custom kernel buildin
ok,
I have a blackberry torch 9800 phone, with unlimited data
I have an acer a500 tablet I would like to tether to my phone
according to what I have read here, I should be able to do this with Thor's revolver.
so I went to tegraowners as suggested
rolled back my 3.2 OTA to 3.0.1
factory reset
rooted tablet
installed acer recovery installer
installed thor recovery
put thor recover latest version on microsd card
updated thor recovery
during this process I mentioned to thor I wanted bluetooth DUN, and he replied if revolver v7 worked for it, then thors a500 rom v12 should as well
so I downloaded and installed v12, and now when paired with phone, there are no DUN options showing at all, I just get paired but not connected, same as stock image.....
what am I doing wrong here?
I had the same problem when upgraded, just do a clean install of V12 and it works perfect, I did that yesterday.
reboot to recovery, format everything and install V12.
SO WHEN YOU PAIR YOUR ANDROID TABLET TO THE PHONE, WHAT DO YOU SEE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO INITIATE BLUETOOTH DUN?
All I have seen so far is device paired but not connected, and the wrench icon doesn't have anything in it other than change name of the connection, and option to unpair.
nothing else shows.

You should be able to pair the tablet w/ your phone, via BT, not sure if you need the bluetooth tethering on the tablet enabled or not, and you should be connected. Just did this on my tablet today w/ my droid x. Currently streaming breaking bad via netflix on the tablet
with my blackberry torch 9800 you have to use bluetooth Dial Up Networking or DUN to initiate the connection. I do it from my windows 7 laptop and it works fine, but no dice on the acer a500 , and running the rom that is supposed to have bluetooth DUN profile built in..... very frustrated at this point.
I am considering just waiting until I am eligible for a new phone in February, and see if I can get a newer phone that supports wifi tethering....
You can create a pan network (at least using an android phone). Let's say your phone is the master/server: turn on bluetooth and make it discoverable. Then run "pand -c <macaddress-of-phone>" on your tablet. You will see an icon for bluetooth tethering in the status bar on the phone. Find the bnep0 ipaddress on the phone by running "netcfg". This will also have created a network interface called bnep0 on the tablet and you can run "ifconfig bnep0 <bnep0 ip of the phone + 1> netmask 255.255.255.0 up" to create the interface. Finally run "route add default gw <bnep0 ip address of the phone> dev bnep0" and "setprop net.dns1 8.8.8.8" and you're done. As for dun, get an rfcomm binary from a cm7 zip , grab profile/chatscript of your operator of the internet, create your interface, and you should be able to dial up using any smartphone. (pand & pppd are installed on the taboonay rom)
Has there been any progress on this? Is there any bluetooth DUN support in the new ICS roms? I'd really like to tether to my phone (works perfect with laptop).

i tried this with Custom ROM ICS 4.0.4
Bluetooth is able to pair with my Phone (Iphone 4s) and connect as a personal Hotspot
but when i type the command ifconfig bnep0 .........
i alway get the Message "Cannot assign the requested IP Adress"
the same as i got with "dhcpcd bnep0"
any Ideas ?
Thanks

What do you mean you can connect as a personal hotspot? And what about the other instructions before ifconfig bnep0?
Hello XDA Forum Members,
First of thanks to all you guys that take their time and help us to fix problems or let us understand things clearly about Android.
My question is that I just bought Acer Iconia A500 and love it and I was expecting to use my LG Optimus V wifi tethering (I can use the wifi tethering easily to my laptop using wireless tether app). I cannot seem to connect it to my Acer tablet. I used PDA Net app for tablets and others wifi tethering app using Bluetooth but the problem comes to only one thing. When I try to connect bluetooth to my Acer tablet, I seem to pair it easily but on both end i.e. on my phone as well as Acer tablet I get a message "Paired but not connected". I also cannot seem to see any proxy settings in Acer tablet settings so that I can tweak it plus after pairing I cannot seem to see Internet Connection in Bluetooth Profile section to connect to internet. But on the other hand I can flawlessly (with out any problem) use my Virgin Mobile LG Optimus internet to my laptop.
I tried everything but unsuccessful and here I am asking you guys to help me.
I am pretty sure you guys out there smarter than me to give me a simple solution.
Thanks
Nick

I have no idea about using bluetooth to tether so I cant help you there. But what happens when you try and tether over wifi?
I've got an Optimus V running CM7 and I'm able to wirelessly tether perfectly via wifi using QuickSettings off the marketplace. I've been doing it with my A500 or my old CM7 Nook Color for a good 4 or 5 months now.
Once you get your mobile hotspot set up, you literally open the app and hit a button to turn on the tethering. It's really easy.
I'm tethering a connection with my Xperia X10 using 'Wifi Tether for root users' app. I'm sure it work's fine cause I'm able to connect to this network via laptop or another android phone. What I'm not able to do is connect to this network from my Transformer. I click on the network and it just changes the state to Remembered but it won't connect to it no matter how many times I cick the thing.
Have any of you managed to solve this already?
I'm running an official ICS, no root or stuff. Completly clean.
What type of hotspot is it putting out? Ad hoc?
I think so
I don't know if it can help, but the issue you describe is exactly the one I had when I used my HTC Sensation (with any ICS custom ROM) as a Wifi AP : I could browse the web from any peripheral connected to the "HTC Portable Hotspot"... except from my TF101 !
I thought the problem came from the TF101 itself (and I'm still thinking it...), but curiously I solved it by flashing my HTC Sensation back to stock ROM (Android 2.3.4) !
Now my TF101 can browse the web through my Sensation like any other device...
I'm still thinking it's Transformer. I was flashing several softs before I started posting. It was always only the bloody transformer that couldn't connect... funny thing is that exactly week ago on the exactly same ICS I've managed to connect. Then it started to fail.
I thin your router needs to support Infrastructure and not adhoc networks to work wth the transformer.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Dude - it's a phone, not a router. It supports ad-hoc only. And as I said - it worked ocassionally. Myabe it's a reason to call a guarantee services?
if your TF is already rooted, then try the free app wifiadhocenabler from the market. i used this for my galaxy s2 because samsung disabled adhoc connections.
I can connect to my x10 just fine using the native tethering (via settings). I am still on HC though...
Sent from my X10a using The Force
I'm just a user, but I had the same problem when I was running Gingerbread on my HTC Legend. Now, there aren't really any proper drivers for that on Gingerbread, so it was done ad-hoc. When I updated to ICS on the TF101 it lost the ability to connect to ad-hoc hotspots. Installing a ROM that uses Froyo fixed it.
I think Prime users faced the same issue, but managed to enable ad-hoc support. Root on the tablet was of course needed.
This is really weird. One day it's connecting and week later it's not. And I haven't been changing ROM since then (neither on the phone or transformer)
Ad-hoc wireless support was supposed to be fixed in the latest .17 ICS update; however, I am still unable to use my TF101 to connect to an ad-hoc network.
