Howto download and save gmail attachments ¿?

Hi all,
Well, the title says it all. In the gmail app or in the internet browser I cannot save attachments to the sd card.
Mainly the Galaxy tries to open it with the ThinkOffice app, but I only want to save the attach, be it .odt, .mp3, .epub, ...

i have the same problem, every format, pdf, exl, etc shows preview only in the message and if I hit preview it comes up Fetching attachment, then 'An SD card is required to download attachments' i have a SD card in aswell as an internal one.
Nothing i seem to do will let me open an attachment, not only with the standard office viewer even with Docs to go installed it wont let me save or open them.

My experience, on a quick test just now. Within the email app, the save feature is dependent on file type (I had two attachments, 1 being a pic and 1 being an excel file).
Picture: Options - download or preview (buttons right after the pic)
Excel file: Options -preview (button right after the pic). After getting put into ThinkFreeOffice (which you don't have to activate), you can click the menu button then click "File" to save to the SD card.

Sorry, this only works for apk´s.

I've found using the gmail through the web browser allows me to save attachments, rather than trying to open them like the gmail app does.

I would suggest you download and install the astro app and in preferences go and put a check mark against "enable browser download". This should enable you to save any kind of attachment via gmail app. Works very well for me.

I just use browsers for attachments. it is much quicker.

Someone please recommend me a decent email client

I tried bluetoothing an mp3 over to my phone to set as a ringtone, that doesn't want to work, so I thought no problem, I can just email it.
The only option I have is to open the mp3, no option to save it.
Earlier a friend sent me an email with jpgs in it, couldn't open them or even see them as attachments.
So please, all I want is a decent mail client like the WinMo one, but with the ability to connect to two exchange accounts.
Does one exist?

I can't offer any real help with the email client as I'm very happy with the native Android one. You can try K9, available free on the Market, but I can't say whether it will resolve your problem or not.
However, if you want a simple way to copy files over to your phone, without going down the USB route, try Dropbox. It's free to open an account and get the software running on your PC (you get 250MB with a free account - I think. Could be more.) There's also an Android client - again free.
Here's the order of things I do to get a file on my phone if I can't be arsed going getting a USB cable.
I copy the file on my PC into the folder "\My Dropbox\Android" ("My Dropbox" is the Dropbox folder that you can have anywhere you like on your PC. Android is a sub-folder so I know what's in there.)
Open Dropbox on my phone and navigate to the file
Long-hold on the file and select "Download"
It's that easy. The file is now in the folder \sdcard\Dropbox\Android on my phone.
Incidentally, if you do go for Dropbox, every time you refer someone to it and they sign up using a link created for you (with a referrer ID in it), you get an extra 250MB of space free. It goes up to 10GB, which I'm happy to say I have

Managed to get the file rebooting into WM and saving it from there, but I wouldn't be able to do that for my work account (WM is only set up for my exchange server at home) under android, and drop box isn't an option as I can't ask my boss/colleagues/clients to use it just so I can view a file they've already emailed out.

note app that saves in .txt file?

Hi, I would love to have an app similiar to colornote which saves the notes into a .txt file so that I can easily sync it with "FolderSync" (or smiliar) via my own server and simply open the .txt file on my computer. Is there anything like that? :S
Maybe a simple notepad would do it as well ?

Even dropbox saves ".txt" files.

I need an app on android which will let me edit .txt files.. which are saved on the SD-Card.
And **** dropbox. I want to sync the files on my own server. Preferable as soon as the file changes. Maybe FolderSync will do the syncing job. Still I need an note-taking app. ColorNote would be awesome but it doesn't save the notes on the sd-card?

Best way to download news from calibre wirelessly

I love the Fetch News option in Calibre to download RSS feeds into beautiful epubs but find it annoying that the Nook STR requires a USB connection to download news.
At first I decided to download the Calibre Library app, but was annoyed by having to be on the same network with my computer running.
Then I get around this by setting my Calibre library in my Dropbox folder, and using the Downloader for Dropbox app to download the entire folder daily. This works pretty well, but I still had to set my computer to wake up daily and was unable to figure out how to setup a script to have just the epubs "save to disk" in a single directory as opposed to the Calibre format... but I think I have found the best solution
If you want to use the B&N stock reader to open epubs sideloaded wirelessly:
1. Download and install ASTRO File Manager
2. Open Astro and go to preferences. Choose "Edit File Extensions" under Data. Choose "New Extension".
Extension Name: epub (no . in there, just epub)
Mime Type: application
SubType: epub (again, no . in there, just epub)
Save
Exit Astro
To automatically download news without having a computer running Calibre you will need to use Readbeam:
Readbeam hosts a Calibre server, and supports many devices (including the Nook STR). It has many stock recipes that are ready to use, and you can even use custom news recipes.
1. Go to readbeam.com and create an account.
2. There is an option for device email address - You may want to create a new gmail address just for your device.. more on this later.
3. Add recipes that you want to read and import your custom recipes if desired. Custom recipes can be found in: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\calibre\custom_recipes
NOTE that custom recipes will need to be approved by an admin (this may take a few hours)
Now you have set Readbeam to automatically create an email an epub of each news source daily! You are almost done...
Now you will need to download an app called Attachments Auto Download
NOTE this app is currently $0.99
This app will automatically download any attachment sent to a gmail address. Since this app downloads every attachment, that's why it's easy to make a new gmail for this purpose.
1. Open the Attachments app and add the account information to where your news will be sent.
2. You may also want to change the Check Interval to 2 minutes. I would also check the box Flat Folder (this will save time when opening files).
3. Click the back arrow in the upper left to exit
Now just connect to WiFi and wait as your news is emailed to you and automatically downloaded!
To read the epubs with the stock B&N reader, just open ASTRO and navigate to "/sdcard/Downloaded Attachments"
You can also set this folder as ASTRO's home directory (by long clicking on it) for easy access!

I am using http://sendtodropbox.com. You receive a new mail and all attachments are saved to you dropbox folder.

For me the best solution is to use
ReadBeam to fetch news
send news from ReadBeam by mail to sendtodropbox
use Dropsync from Market to sync the "attachement" directory created by sendtodropbox on my Dropbox acount with "My Files/Magazines/" on my Nook

I assume this approach requires you to root the NST? I'm still concerned about the potential for battery drain so I'm trying to avoid this initially.
BTW, for us noobs, is there a quick way to see what this would look like on the Nook? I assume have Readbeam build the file and then just wire it over for a test?

Yes you have to root your NST to install dropsync

i use rss reader over wifi but it doesn't always download the articles properly for offline later so I'll look into this, thanks

Dropbox syncing files to phone without favorite

So I finally got the device where I wanted it yesterday. Today I notice that my available space is already down to 5gb without me putting much on the phone. After digging around, I found that there is a folder called documentsync that holds 2gb of my dropbox files and it seems to be putting more on there as I type. I think this is causing my phone to die a quick death as it was burning batteries on standby. Anyone have this problem?

I had the same problem. I can't believe that Samsung has this turned on by default. Go to settings > accounts > cloud and turn off Document Sync. This will then remove all the content from your device.

I never use Samsung 's implementation of Dropbox sync. It is poorly done and uses internal storage.
3rd party apps do a better job in folder to folder syncing with more controls over the directory location and sync schedules.

Yup, my god. After installing my apps and configuring my phone, I saw that the disk space was down to around 3GB. It made no sense, and I started cursing the pre-installed S4 software like everyone else. I removed stuff with Titanium, and even directly using a root folder browser, and I pray I didn't break anything. The next day, I finally noticed that "DocumentSync" folder and had no idea what it was, except obviously its directory structure matched my Dropbox account. I still couldn't find any info, so I simply deleted it. Somehow, I think I'm lucky that I didn't delete all my Dropbox content. After reading this thread, I check the setting and it was already turned off, so I have no idea how that happened (perhaps when I deleted that folder). Really stupid of them to background sync several gigabytes of data on you by default with no warning.
In fact, the first day after getting my phone, I got a warning that my disk space had been filled up. It completely made no sense, so I unlinked and re-linked my cloud apps, and cursed the one that's in beta that I assumed was at fault and then got all paranoid about it. All those complaints about the S4 are pretty much over minor annoyances, but this default stealth auto-sync makes it look like your phone is completely messed up. I have to say it's the phone's biggest hiccup. But even though it's easily fixed, it caused quite a bit of chaos and worry on my part, and I hope I didn't damage anything while trying to fix it.

I want to delete the folder but is it supposed to delete the files in your Dropbox account? I don't want to risk losing the files.

Thanks. I didn't get back to reading this forum until. I simply disconnected the dropbox account, disable sync,then reconnect my account. That had to be the dumbest default setting ever.

Yesterday I just delete this documentsync folder. DON'T DO THIS!!!! It have delete all the documents files Inside my dropbox account. Turn this option off in setting before delete anything or you will lose them.
Fortunately, the dropbox site offer a restore file option (the trash icon on top) . Whitout this, I had loose so much valuables files.

my queries are similar. I really want a way to sync files from my PC with my Note 3. My required files are all documents (docx, xlsx, pdf, txt etc) I’m not looking for music video syncs. I use many important docs and excels and I want them all 100% updated on my phone all time so that I can use them anywhere.
I’m not a dropbox fan and used it very less in past but after getting note 3 I realize there have less ways to sync and store files in external memory. I wanted them all to store in external card (32gb) as many files but I doesn’t. Still internal is fine. I started use Dropbox app and tried the stock file manager dropbox option. What happened, in the initial setup it downloaded all files in internal memory DocumentSync folder but then when I started changing those files, it did not updated those over dropbox. Make sure I was editing DocumentSync folders raw files by Polaris Office, not from dropbox application or either the file manager home screen dropbox icon shortcut as both of them downloading each files before editing. As these didn’t work, like you all I remove this and disable this option.
But as I always wanted all these dropbox files locally, even when offline/no network I can update/read those files. So can anyone tell me the purpose of DocumentSync folders local files? Also any way the Samsungs optional dropbox or dropbox app can store all in external memory card? Would this app be of use to you? You can store the files locally, then set the file to sync with your dropbox account and it be set up as a two-way sync between phone and dropbox and desktop/tablet/laptop/etc and dropbox.

I checked this apps and few similar like this before but none of them could store in external memory, so no help. But DropSync does, but problem is it stores files in external memory /Android/data/com.ttxapps.dropsync/files which is hard to navigate all time and then the free version only allows one folder to sync, no sub directories. And I’ve all documents set under separate directories. And I do not purchase apps . So didn’t found any other helpful app.

Update:
Yesterday again I linked to the My File Dropbox extinction, and play with it little bit and test few. Earlier I somehow saw it wasn’t correctly, not updating, not syncing properly etc so I removed it. But yesterday I only made Doc Sync, it downloaded all doc files and I did some test by file changes and it syncing instantly. I was changing in raw file in DocumentSync folder.
The only issue I found is if new files added and existing files deleted in dropbox its not immediately doing the same in that folder. Its taking time, and sometime long time. But if I disconnect and reconnect wifi, the changes appearing immediately, most probably this is due to as it set to sync over wifi only.
But its really great for me, as I can get all docs raw files even if no network and don’t have to download each time. But its not working very smoothly and its storing files internal memory but as my all docs are around 5mb no not a big issues. But I would love to get it in external memory. Overall this works great for me also no extra app require. But Samsung should make a way to sync all files locally.
