Dropbox syncing files to phone without favorite - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I finally got the device where I wanted it yesterday. Today I notice that my available space is already down to 5gb without me putting much on the phone. After digging around, I found that there is a folder called documentsync that holds 2gb of my dropbox files and it seems to be putting more on there as I type. I think this is causing my phone to die a quick death as it was burning batteries on standby. Anyone have this problem?

I had the same problem. I can't believe that Samsung has this turned on by default. Go to settings > accounts > cloud and turn off Document Sync. This will then remove all the content from your device.

I never use Samsung 's implementation of Dropbox sync. It is poorly done and uses internal storage.
3rd party apps do a better job in folder to folder syncing with more controls over the directory location and sync schedules.

Yup, my god. After installing my apps and configuring my phone, I saw that the disk space was down to around 3GB. It made no sense, and I started cursing the pre-installed S4 software like everyone else. I removed stuff with Titanium, and even directly using a root folder browser, and I pray I didn't break anything. The next day, I finally noticed that "DocumentSync" folder and had no idea what it was, except obviously its directory structure matched my Dropbox account. I still couldn't find any info, so I simply deleted it. Somehow, I think I'm lucky that I didn't delete all my Dropbox content. After reading this thread, I check the setting and it was already turned off, so I have no idea how that happened (perhaps when I deleted that folder). Really stupid of them to background sync several gigabytes of data on you by default with no warning.
In fact, the first day after getting my phone, I got a warning that my disk space had been filled up. It completely made no sense, so I unlinked and re-linked my cloud apps, and cursed the one that's in beta that I assumed was at fault and then got all paranoid about it. All those complaints about the S4 are pretty much over minor annoyances, but this default stealth auto-sync makes it look like your phone is completely messed up. I have to say it's the phone's biggest hiccup. But even though it's easily fixed, it caused quite a bit of chaos and worry on my part, and I hope I didn't damage anything while trying to fix it.

I want to delete the folder but is it supposed to delete the files in your Dropbox account? I don't want to risk losing the files.

I would make a backup before deleting just to be sure

Probably a good idea

Thanks. I didn't get back to reading this forum until. I simply disconnected the dropbox account, disable sync, then reconnect my account. That had to be the dumbest default setting ever.

Yesterday I just delete this documentsync folder. DON'T DO THIS!!!! It have delete all the documents files Inside my dropbox account. Turn this option off in setting before delete anything or you will lose them.
Fortunately, the dropbox site offer a restore file option (the trash icon on top) . Whitout this, I had loose so much valuables files.

Hi guys,
my queries are similar. I really want a way to sync files from my PC with my Note 3. My required files are all documents (docx, xlsx, pdf, txt etc) I’m not looking for music video syncs. I use many important docs and excels and I want them all 100% updated on my phone all time so that I can use them anywhere.
I’m not a dropbox fan and used it very less in past but after getting note 3 I realize there have less ways to sync and store files in external memory. I wanted them all to store in external card (32gb) as many files but I doesn’t. Still internal is fine. I started use Dropbox app and tried the stock file manager dropbox option. What happened, in the initial setup it downloaded all files in internal memory DocumentSync folder but then when I started changing those files, it did not updated those over dropbox. Make sure I was editing DocumentSync folders raw files by Polaris Office, not from dropbox application or either the file manager home screen dropbox icon shortcut as both of them downloading each files before editing. As these didn’t work, like you all I remove this and disable this option.
But as I always wanted all these dropbox files locally, even when offline/no network I can update/read those files. So can anyone tell me the purpose of DocumentSync folders local files? Also any way the Samsungs optional dropbox or dropbox app can store all in external memory card? I really don’t want this to way to download each files before reading/editing (due to slower internet).
Please advice, thanks in advance!

Would this app be of use to you? You can store the files locally, then set the file to sync with your dropbox account and it be set up as a two-way sync between phone and dropbox and desktop/tablet/laptop/etc and dropbox.

I checked this apps and few similar like this before but none of them could store in external memory, so no help. But DropSync does, but problem is it stores files in external memory /Android/data/com.ttxapps.dropsync/files which is hard to navigate all time and then the free version only allows one folder to sync, no sub directories. And I’ve all documents set under separate directories. And I do not purchase apps . So didn’t found any other helpful app.

Update:
Yesterday again I linked to the My File Dropbox extinction, and play with it little bit and test few. Earlier I somehow saw it wasn’t correctly, not updating, not syncing properly etc so I removed it. But yesterday I only made Doc Sync, it downloaded all doc files and I did some test by file changes and it syncing instantly. I was changing in raw file in DocumentSync folder.
The only issue I found is if new files added and existing files deleted in dropbox its not immediately doing the same in that folder. Its taking time, and sometime long time. But if I disconnect and reconnect wifi, the changes appearing immediately, most probably this is due to as it set to sync over wifi only.
But its really great for me, as I can get all docs raw files even if no network and don’t have to download each time. But its not working very smoothly and its storing files internal memory but as my all docs are around 5mb no not a big issues. But I would love to get it in external memory. Overall this works great for me also no extra app require. But Samsung should make a way to sync all files locally.

Activesync - syncing files

I recently setup Activesync to sync files but i really only wanted it to sync a single Word Document file in My Documents on my Vario.
When it syncs it syncs the whole of the My Documents folder, which is crap cos this contains all my camera photos and videos and I dont want that. is there a way to just do files you want.
I managed to delete the files on my PC and it removed them on my Vario!
Also any new files that appear in My Documents on my Vario get automatically synced!
TIA
Doug
That would be difficult. What I suggest would be to move your not-wanting-to-syn files to your storage card or some folder in your root (e.g. not in the My Documents). Yeah, that would cause problems with many of your applications as it will look for My Document first and you would have to go and find your customized folder.
Anyway, you can try this (I didn't try it before). Create a shortcut in your My Documents that point to another folder where you keep all your real files, so that if your app open My Document, it would be easy for you to find that folder. But, still any photo taken by your camera will be still in My Document.
Anyway, there isn't much harm syncing all files. I mean, as long as the files are not changed, the isn't much time consumed in synching them. Better just leave them as they are

Change the sync location of My Files in activesync to use storage card

I threw a few music files in the MY PDA folder under My Documents on my PC and expected them to sync accross to my Vario II. After connecting the phone it sent a couple across then I got a warning on the phone that 'Storage Memory is Critically Low'. Obviously the files had been synced onto the phone. Thought you would be able to specify to sync onto the phone storage card but there is no option for this anywhere.
Anyone know a way to do this?
if you set up the sync option for media player in active sync and then set up the playslists you want to sync in media player on your pc it will automatically set up the folders on your card and transfer the files. it does warn not to drag and drop onto the card of you want the sync process to work.
Cheers cdyat, but this was more of a test. For instance, what if I want to sync 30Mb of Office files with my phone. It would appear that I can't just put these in the My PDA Sync folder to be copied next time I connect, but I have to cut and paste from the relevant folders.
This to me seems ridiculous but I can't see an option to change the location to sync with the storage card anywhere.
You can only sync files, be default, into main memory. There are two 3rd party apps available (Sorry can't remember the names) that will allow you to Sync anything to anywhere. One is commercial and the other is a Japenglish conversion. Try searching these forums for links.
I am all for searching, but if anyone comes up with a name for those two apps, please post =)
As another user recently posted in this forum, Pocket Controller has a Sync Manager that can be used to synchronize files and folders to any location, including storage cards.
Pocket Controller sounds very nice but $35 is quite a lot just to enable me to sync a folder to my storage card.
I had assumed there must be a registry setting somewhere on the PC that would change the default path?
Try these
http://www.mydocsunlimited.com/html/mightysync.html (Commercial)
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=985 (Freeware)
YMMV, but have a nice day...
Cheers Daniel, Mobsync looks like it might do the trick.
Acid Sync - Sync Computer Folder to SD Card\Folder
A guy I know is working on a program to do this with a much easier configuration since it just syncs Desktop folder to Storage Card folder. Pretty simple really, copy mp3 or whatever to desktop folder and it will sync to PPC folder and viceversa. Still in beta though

[App Idea]Web Sync -Alpha test 2 (1/13/2011) - File transfer added!

Okay guys, I tried to come up with an idea for Android and I finally came up with one and I'd like to ask what you think of it before I publish to the public. So, I've had a lot of files on my computer in a folder called "Copy later" and I haven't had the time to sit down, connect my phone, and wait for it to sync all the files. I also am aware of many different apps which sync through WiFi but if I travel to places, I don't have the time to wait for it to copy. So, I decided to come up with a solution...Basically, you would turn on your computer, run this super lightweight app which takes your files in a specific folder (or a system folder like "My Documents of My Music") and send it to a remote server. Now, the remote server would wait for your phone to be available (like connected to the internet and to the server) and it will negotiate a connection with it. Once the connection has been built, the remote server will start transferring the files to the phone. When the files have been processed to the phone, the server will delete its "Temp container" and will wait for the computer to tell it to copy more files.
Now, people will also want to backup the contents of their phone and sync up their files. The same process also applies for the phone's data but slightly more efficient. Essentially, you can setup (optionally) some "zones" at which you can sync the corresponding data. For example, when you are at work, you can sync up your contacts and your "Work" folder. When you're at home, it can sync up your music files and maybe your Facebook updates. This is great because it takes in your GPS location and you can set a radius so that if you are within that radius, you can be syncing up some specific folder(s) with your computer. Also, in the event you lose your phone, you would still have the last synced files. This makes your syncing much more efficient.
If you like this idea, I have already started working on it so please tell me if you want to be a beta for it. Right now, it's invite only so post in this thread if you want me to send you a link. I personally think it is useful for me because switching from school to home, to friends' house, it is handy to sync only the stuff I change. Also, Im looking for a name for this app (still haven't thought of one). A good name will get a prize....
UPDATES
-Removed the middle server - Direct pc to android connection
-Encrypted transfers
-Connects through port 4000 so if you have port forwarding done for this, you can connect from anywhere in the world!
-Sends the data encrypted now
Alpha Program 1:
-This simply transfers data from pc to android and establishes a secure connection.
Alpha program 2:
-After long hours of work, I finally got it to transfer the data safely through the web.
-It doesn't send ANY data without encypting it first and this took a while to make but it finally does conversion without much lag.
-Basically, you choose an mp3 from your computer and send it over. Once it completes, it will play on device. Check out the quality...its equal to that on the computer...
Sign me up for the beta.
I don't quite understand.
What files would you be syncing?
How is this different than using DropBox, where I already have 2GB of space?
Who controls this 'remote server'?
dropbox is different because the files "stay" in the server, but in this the server is only a middle means for data transport. The files are deleted from server once the sync is performed. You can sync whatever you want, like music/videos/data/whatever other folder you choose.
Also, dropbox is basically a "file storage"/backup solution. This just transfers the files from desktop to device and back.
Alright. I have begun work on this project. Firstly, I have now eliminated the idea of needing a 3rd party remote server. Now, it will connect directly to the phone using wifi networks and direct tcp/ip protocol. However, the difference is that data will be transfered in ssl. This way, it will be very secure.

My interest is piqued now I'm liking this alot! Would come in very handy.
im down for this!
Okay. Firstly, I would like to get a beta out today. This beta will simply send a file to and from your device and tell you if it was successful. There is a windows app and an android app which runs on your phone. Both are light but the point is to encrypt/decrypt the data sent.
I Like The Idea.... Also, If Your Open To Suggestions, I Think A Few Useful Features Would Be:
If You Had A Optional Folder On Both Your Sdcard, And Also Your Desktop, That Can Be Set To AutoMatically Send From Either End (Sdcard Or Desktop) Or Even Send To Email, Or Wherever Else When Files Are Dropped Into Either Optional Folder!!
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Ok so you're saying it should automatically sync whenever things have been updated right? I think that would be easy enough. Problem now is that the computer has to stay on when you want to sync. Is that okay?

Yes That Would Be Ok, But....
What Do You Think Of A Feature (If Possible?) That Can Detect If Its First Destination (Computer) Is Off, & If So More Or Less Have A Secondary Destination, (Email) Maybe?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Thats great. When it does a handshake, if it fails, it can resort to a secondary target....email? Isn't that too small of a space to store large files?

I think you're trying to compete with dropbox by offering a service that doesn't require users to trust dropbox's security. I've looked at what they say about security here:
dropbox.com/help/27 (sorry, forum doesn't let me post actual links)
Reading that makes me feel safe about storing my files there. Then again, if I had data that would put millions of dollars or lives in risk if it got in the wrong hands, I'd want more security.
If you want a successful product, I think you should target it to this latter crowd -- users who take the security of their data very seriously.
right. Which is why i decided to eliminate the idea of needing a middle server.
Great idea. I was ( just like many others) have been looking for way to sync files over the net with no server in between.
It would be even better if the app in the Phone would auto detect any file chnage and sync with the computer.
Gud luk and let me know u need another tester.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
ok. an aplha has been posted and this is merely a test to see if my method of transfer works. Please try it and reply here if it works properly. It seriously takes only 60 seconds to test it out.
This app looks great! If you need some servers for temp. file storage hit me up via PM.
Keep up the great work
Thanks, but I think I am going to not do the temp file storage thing, as some people are concerned with the security of it. Anyway, I may however make a web based login thing where you can access the files in the computer remotely. This web client will act as if it were mimicking a device. Also, how did the app go? Did the transfer work?
Wow...this actually works...
vision
Great then. I will now make one which transfers a sound file (mp3 of your choice), transfers it, then plays it on the phone.
-Another alpha may come out tomorrow or tonight....

Google Docs Location

Ok guys I know this may have a simple answer but I haven't been able to pinpoint it.
In Accounts & Sync under my Gmail account there is the option to sync Google Docs, ok , where do they sync to? I have looked all through my SD card and system folders with Root Explorer and haven't been able to find it...
Thanks ahead for any input from all of you...
there is a google docs app u have to install
It must be a temp folder as those documents are not stored in the phone
Well I do have Docs installed but if it's syncing then it must be putting the files somewhere to make them readily accessible....
But I may be wrong

Ok I hadn´t gotten as far as that folder. Aight I saw in there a database list that I opened with SQLite and it has all the names of everything I had in google docs, so am I to assume that it doesn't physically download anything, just keeps a list of what is there and keeps up with changes in those documents?

I dont know of any app that actually keeps a full copy of all the google docs in the phone.
However my solution is use ( kind of limited but... )
1. syncdocs.com to sync google docs file to PC and
2. use missingsync to sync folder in PC with my sd card.
The result is anyfile that i edit in phone gets synced to google docs and vice verssa.

Automatic backup /sync to pc over wifi

I have been searching for a solution to get my phone to backup all contents of the phone and sd card to a specific folder on my pc. I just want to not worry about having to do everything manually all the time.
I want to come home, have my profile manager turn on the wifi, phone detects home wifi on which my pc is, starts to backup all new content ontto the specified folder immediately.
I am mostly concerned about images, videos etc. Looking for a similar solution that eye-fi as / wifi card provides.
Anyone got any ideas or recommend for any apps that do this?

Try Titanium Media Sync https://market.android.com/details?id=com.keramidas.MediaSync&feature=more_from_developer
Same author as Titanium Backup. Can sync to FTP, SFTP, FTPS servers and dropbox. I use it to automatically store data like fotos, videos on my home server.
Syncness Wifi Sync is another one that I heard about. I have not tried it, but it supports wifi profiles like you mentioned. Might be worth a look.
For a free alternative you might try FolderSync Lite or (if you are a Dropbox user) Dropsync .
Let us know what ends up working for you.

This is the one that I have been looking at http://promwadmobile.com/portfolio/android-safe-backup.html
I did a quick trial and it easily found my network PCs over wifi and will auto backup on schedule. I don't think it will do the auo detect and backup though?
