Samsung Galaxy Tab from United States ... - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Hi,
If I buy Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 from US, let say from Amazon.com ... and use it in EU (The Netherlands).
Does it mean that I own US version? Meaning, I can then download apps that are only available in US ...
Or Google Market will smart enough to detect based on my Google checkout account which is based on EU ...
Anyone in EU bought and use Android device from US?
I am also concern with the software updates, because Samsung is very active and good with software update here in EU (see news about Gingerbread 2.3.4 for Galaxy S phones). Or my concern should not be because the Galaxy tab 10.1 from Amazon / BestBuy is full retail directly from Samsung and not via carriers.
Thanks

I bought a WIFI only Xoom from US and i can access US Market using US VPN connection and a Google account that has location set to US. Otherwise i get European Market.

I have an american galaxy tab 10.1 and I'm using it in canada. I do not have access to american apps.

I suppose you will be localized by your IP address not by where device is from
At least that is how hulu and netflix do it and what is (luckily) easy to "fix" - see link in my signature ;-).
I use it for over a year and it is great!

Like i already wrote, Android Market looks at your IP address and location set on your Google account.
Using US VPN connection and Google account set to US works on WIFI only Xoom, i have no reason to believe it won't work on WIFI only GT10.1. Devices with GSM radio are another story.

Why?
It is exactly the same.
It does not matter how you connect to the internet (if your ISP is GSM network or if you have ADSL2 or VDSL or any other way to connect) if you use VPN server between you and your target. With VPN your original IP is always hidden and traffic between you and VPN server encrypted so even ISP does not know what places you visit.

When the update of Android 3.1 released for the first time for Xoom in the US, did you also get it officially?
Probably yes because you are using US VPN ....

I dont think the Market access is also determined from the connected IP address.
Because it does not make sense. Think when you go abroad to other region or country, the IP will be changed (network operator switched). But yeah, I dont know ...

I was talking about Android Market and if your device has a radio then you can spoof a network id (MarketEnabler) and you don't need anything else. With wifi onlyXoom you can use a build.prop from the Verizon Xoom and you have US Market access without VPN.
As far as i know, Android Market only looks at your IP if your device doesn't have radio, so if your device has a radio then VPN only won't help you.

Once I have my android tablet (one day) I will let you know ;-).

GSM is really another story. With my Euro Galaxy Tab P-1000 i can connect to US Market with a dummy sim card from ATT never activated. (I had this with my first iphone). So it is not IP when it comes to GSM models.

Does any one know if the new 10.1 comes with International warranty ?

It does not, so if you buy it in USA it will not be covered in Europe.

I am going to buy a 16 GB Wifi only (prefererrably gray) asap from the US.
As I am in Europe (Hungary) I made a bit of a research on my options .
Please let me know what you think or if you have info to add:
only 3 sellers ship to overseas (non US or Canada addresses) generally:
- Amazon: exception now!: "Shipping: Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S."
- frys.com: horrible shipping fee: 135 $
- tigerdirect: only wire transfer accepted as payment (my poor english: is it bank transfer?), they charge 25$ below 500$ order (okay, I can buy some 2$ stuff), shipping fee quite unknown.
So my only option is to get it shipped by some parcel forwarder.
The ones I checked:
bongous, myus: expensive (> 60$)
viaddress: 53 or 63 $ (depends on whether the parcel is 2 or 3 lbs)
shipito: 34 (postage) + 8 (shipito fee) + 8 insurance (50$)
And reviews were basically ok for shipito so I would go for that.
Now find the sellers with free shipping to US and good reviews/reputation/return policy:
- costco.com: shipping "early July" -> FORGET IT
- amazon, newegg: free shipping
- bestbuy, frys, tigerdirect: no free shipping
So I would choose (Amazon or Newegg) + shipito
What do you guys think?
BTW: what are the dimensions/weight of the parcel? (so poor sellers: I was not able to find reliable info on that, especially regarding the weight)

@jasahu:
end of this month 3G ver. should be in EU.
Considering how much you are going to pay for 16GB WiFi from USA I'd wait a bit...

Thanks for the tip I was aware of that.
The thing is I am not interested in 3g GT, I will use the one in my phone over Wifi.
And the price diff is:
US: (500 + 50 shipping) *1.25 (VAT) = 687$
Amazon.de for 3G + shipping: 936$
diff: 250$ -> too much for me to cover the warranty inconvenience

True
If you find someone willing to help let me know as I need a friendly soul to help me get hulu plus account - I got the money but can not pay from Europe :-(

I ordered mine, the 32gb version from Amazon and will ship it via bongous.
Hopefully, i could get it before end of June as Amazon will ship it June 20, 2011.
I choose bongous based on various reviews and my take on their website and their support was fast to answer my questions.
The total price should be comparable with buying from here, because $599 original price and I paid 440 euro. Of course, I must pay shipping and import tax. I think in euro would be around 600 euro here later.
But I cant wait more longer as I saw there was no indication of wifi only being released soon in Europe. I expect to use it for at least half year before getting the new Tegra 3 device next year 2012.

Let us/me know once u got it ;-).

Considering that the 3G version will be available in Europe by end of June for 599 euros, i don't see the point in ordering from US...

Not available in your country - workarounds?

I know many people outside of the chosen few countries want to get their hands on this latest android offering from the G-mothership. Down here in New Zealand we have the network through Vodafone to use the phone, but what I'm wondering is the following...
Is there a technical reason why the phone want work in countries outside the current lucky ones?
Does the online Activation require you to be in one of those countries, or limited to those countries? Or is activation optional?
Can anyone think of any other reasons or workarounds?
I'm planning to get the phone through the UK and send it back to NZ. All I really need to know is that I'm not shipping a $800NZ "superphone" paper weight.
Any help appreciated, I know other people will find this info useful in other countries.
Currently using a HTC Touch Diamond 2 that I got shipped from Hong Kong and its been working fine. Hoping the same applies to the Nexus One
Hey I live in New Zealand also. Currently I am waiting for my nexus one to be shipped from California to Auckland, there's more details at geekzone.co.nz under Android
Sweet as, good to hear someone else is trying.
You can use a reship service like shipitto or demail
http://demailbox.com/
demail is probably the best because they're based in delaware which doesnt add tax. Also I think shipping to the US is free when you order a nexus.
So you would pay demailbox a fee for handling your package and providing a 'virtual' US address in delaware, and the shipping from there to your country.
You would pay google just for the phone and free shipping to the virtual US mailbox.
Then you'd pay tax/duty when it enters your own country. Really the only extra here is the demailbox fee, as you'd have to pay the rest even if google shiped to you.

I had no clue it was region locked =/ or am i understanding this wrong. I thought they were just selling it in those countries but not just enabling them in those countries. I'm also waiting on mine
babijoee which country are you in?
There's no region lock, but you need to look at the frequencies that are supported.
Its also unclear if the phone is linked to the google checkout account it was bought from for activation.
I went through the standard prompts on the N1 and didn't see anything about a specific "registration".. I imagine I could have used any of my Gmail accounts to setup the device. The word "registration" never came up.
We were unable to find any Nexus One phones to activate.
If you purchased your phone as an upgrade, you should transfer your SIM card from your old T-Mobile phone to your Nexus One. Only ported phone numbers require activation. Contact T-Mobile Customer Care with further questions.
Ahh that makes sense So activation isnt an issue

Hey i live in Delaware. Think there is a business in this for me..lol. I will be an intermediary ;-)
Edit: Not to mention I work at UPS
Dears,
here is what you need to do..
Get a US proxy ... or you cant order via Google Checkout (IP checking)
They accept none US Credit Cards... well at least they took my Kuwaiti... (your bank my stop this not them !!!)
Ship to your "US" address ... I use BorderLinx (Owned by DHL !)
They (G) shipped mine overnight to "OH" (Seems they ship from nearest warehouse so that they Raise US TAX... !)
Mine "arrived" on Friday.. and is currently on route to Kuwait... I'll get it on Tuesday..
So the whole thing including US TAX, Shipping(Express->US->Q8) and customs (Here) cost $678...
No issues with the Freq - 3G as the N1 supports ROW (Rest of World) it only has issues with the US...
BTW the Shipping weight is 1.57KG (Fedex AWB stated 0.9KG) as stated by DHL..
Working one

Where to buy?

Can anyone share info where is the best price to buy Nexus One? I normally order from Clove, but they dont have it.
Google.com/phone.
If you're looking to get a brand new one google.com/phone is the only place to go.
I have been to the web site...but dont know how to purchase one. I think it's only available for US customers only??
Depends where you live. Google list which countries they supply
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk

Try using Google
Unfortunately Australia is not listed. I dont know if using fake IP (such as VPN) may do the trick? and still allow google to ship to Australia?? Has anyone tried and worked?
Use Hotspot Shield as your proxy, then you must use a mail forwarding service such as ComGateway.
More info here ://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=Google_Phone
Just complete the URL because I can't post links
just get it thro ebay?

Official USA Thread for S3

Thought I would start a thread for those of us in the US who have unique situations with International Devices.
The first issue many will have on MediNet, or one of the many pay as you go services like Straight Talk will be the Micro SIM. We are currently using the full sized SIMS in our S2s and Notes.
I am guessing along with the usual APN setting questions we will be getting suggestions on where to buy SIM cutters.....
Cutters are available on ebay, amazon etc. I had some sent from the latter and prices I saw ranged from a few bucks up to 10. There are many DIY videos showing the process which is in any event very straight forward.
Question
If I am moving from a HTC One X with 4G LTE set up on the SIM card, will I have to use custom APN settings for the HSPA+ to work right? I'm pretty sure it will work fine as is, but I'm not sure if the SIM is set up with APN settings optimized for 4G LTE already.

I think when you call ATT you can ask to be provisioned for whatever service you will be wanting to use. OTHER THAN MEDIANET as with the above provisions you can tell ATT exactly what phone you have and they will register you on the network and I think set your VPN for you.
When using MediaNet you can give them your IMEI whcih I did on all three of our International phones and in my case I told them I did not want to pay $25 for data I would not need on the phone I bought off Ebay, THEY OFFERED mediaNet and and "reluctantly" took the $10 UL plan,
I found the settings here but I also found an app called APN Manager Pro which has APNs from all over the world. I just selected Cingular 410. I have tried some other settings as well. they all work fine.
I really hope Samsung sells the international version here in the US.

They always have. New Egg had them as well as Amazon. However I have not purchased a new International phone yet as warranties can be suspect. I immediately would void them anyway so I usually wait and buy used. May times already rooted. So far so good. Patience pays off in many ways.
1. Savings. I have saved over $600 buying used.
2. By the time used ones hit development is well on it's way to perfection.
3. Launch issues are observed and taken care of.
4. Resale is still a good market for older devices.
5. No need to upgrade until a worthy phone to SELL is released. (In this case I will user our upgrades for a couple iPhone 5s if it turns out to be a hot seller)

ATT won't know even if you give them your IMEI. Just don't tell them you are using a smart phone UNLESS you want to be provisioned for the smart phone higher speeds. ATT has all three of our International phone IMEI numbers. They show up as clam shell phones on my account site.
Our phones are on the dumb phone plan (MediaNet UL data) I max out at 3mps Up. But it has been good enough for YouTube streaming and more than ample for music streaming.

One of the reasons I prefer used phones is they have been broken in and little chance for a DOA. I don't expect to use a warranty on a device I void in the first week by rooting. I don't think its right people screw up their devices then blame Samsung's workmanship and claim warranty service raising the costs of the devices as well as forcing the company to maybe inset some erroneous code to prevent fraudulent warranty claims.
Its a risk worth taking and I have saved enough financially not buying new to practically get a new S3 "free" .

Yes, so you would have to send it to the right Samsung. Expansys I believe told me I could also send it to them and they would send it to Samsung for me.
I know we don't get a USA warranty, but we do have one. It's not that we don't have one at all.
EDIT:

One of the reasons I buy used is because a new phone offers no warranty advantage and could be DOA. Used devices by reputable sellers usually have been rooted well broken in. Any issues would have been resolved before a sale. I don't mind physical flaws to save a few hundred dollars for the same experience. I likely won't keep the phone more than a year anyway.
but it is nice to know Warrantys are available for US buyers as that would make the used market safer for those who buy from US sellers who may have used the warranty.

Switching to MicroSIM is so easy, not sure why you brought this thread up in the first place. Just go to ATT store to replace it. That's what I did for free (for the HOX before I sold it, then I put it on S3, easy).
APN settings can be found everywhere. Just search xda.

I hear you. But don't you have to wait a long time (~1 year) for the phone to hit the used market at a low enough price? I can imagine the GS3 used will still be well over $600 for a long time to come.

They can't sell directly because of the contracts with carriers. The carriers will be super piss'd if they do that. (damn useless controlling carriers)
There is always option to buy thru negri, expansys, newegg, amazon and various other sites. The only caveat is Samsung USA doesn't provide warranty for imported devices. For me it doesn't matter since I change devices frequently and don't care. But if you want warranty some of online sellers provide it thru their european counterparts or you have option to buy warranty from square trade or similar services.

Google Play store -Nexus purchase

I'll keep this really short
https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_7_8GB?id=nexus_7_8gb&hl=en
Im from India and clicking on the above link gives the error
"Sorry! Devices on Google Play is not available in your country yet.
We're working to bring devices to more countries as quickly as possible.
Please check back again soon."
As expected since im from India
The Nexus 4 has launched and will bew going on sale for $350 for the Unlocked 16GB version of the phone
What i intend on doing is order the phone off the Play Store for my Dad who is based in US so that he can then ship it to India
He is always busy at work so is there any work around on how i can make that link useable in India to the order it
Proxy maybe ?
Oh and payment for Device can be done without a Paypal ? As my dad should have a Credit card
Thanks for the help
I was thinking of using a Proxy, but is it safe for shopping ??
Oh and can someone please explain to me the means to order it, Credit card/google wallet/ payapal ?
I wouldn't order some anything with a credit card over a proxy, they're insecure.
Sorry, there really is no other way. Until and unless Google opens up the Play store and sells the Nexus in India, you cannot go through the checkout process from India. The billing and shipping address are required to be the same, in which case it needs to be based in the US.
Damn :/
Thing is i only need to do the browsing
AS iwill be using my dads credit card or any other means of payment
All i need to know is payment options
Thanks
Just have your dad set up teamviewer and send you his passcode ( 1 minute of less ).
Then when he is away from the pc for more than 5 minutes you can browse google play website and order using your dad pc through your pc with the help of teamviewer.
Ohk so you want your dad to send it to you.
What you can do is give him this link http://www.google.com/nexus/4/
and tell him to press "SHOP NOW"
hope that solved your problem
ill do the team view thing
Will a VISA Credit/ Debit card work ? Or do i need google wallet ?
Credit card must work.
Your are going to use a USA card.
The card's location of issue must be the same as the addressing location. Not sure how exactly it works or if there are any work arounds.
Use Google.com
The specs are amazing and i just love Android.Unfortunately for reasons unknown Google is not so keen on launching their Nexus phones in India . It was true for the Galaxy Nexus and i don't think that Google has any plans of launching this one in India. My brother who stays in US will be coming home for Christmas and i will ask him to get the 16 GB version which will cost just 18,500 INR (approx)...... that's almost the price i had paid to get my Motorola Defy a year ago .Are there any limitations of using this phone in India...i read somewhere that the phone will have a built in battery ? is that true ? If yes....is it possible to change the battery if i have any issues with the existing one or once the stock battery dies out.
Regardless of area availability, you linked to a discontinued product . They aren't selling the 8GB version anywhere anymore

If yes....is it possible to change the battery if i have any issues with the existing one or once the stock battery dies out.

We will not know until someone gets their hands on the phone and does a tear down of it.

You are totally wrong. LG has an official statement released that they will be very much launching a NX4 in India. Heck even Google said it is coming to 200 countries. So no way they have missed India.
I too am from India and am desperately waiting for it to show up on the Play Store.
It will only be available from Google in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Spain and Australia.
All other places will have to buy it through local retailers/phone providers, where it will probably be significantly more expensive.

Issues while Buying Nexus 7 2013 LTE from US Play store

Hi,
I placed an order for Nexus 7 2013 LTE to a valid address in US and Order got cancelled..
The story so far:
1. I tried ordering from normal playstore and i am redirected to Indian Playstore (pretty logical from Google since i live in Bangalore, India).
2. I spoofed my IP by going over VPN (Hotspot, Ultrasurf) Google got me there again saying It is not available for my country !!!.
It tracks my activity rather than IP address.
Created a new account and still get the same treatment (not sure how Google got me there. could be that Hotspot, Ultrasurf are blacklisted or something).
3. Went to my office VPN and tried placing order with a new account ( Google could not catch me here and i got proceeded to order)
4. Order Placed, money deducted from my credit card, got order conformation from Google. (yay ! -----> happiness short-lived bitterly)
5. 2 minutes later my order gets cancelled saying my name on credit card and recipient name does not match (!) and bank address does not match recipient address ( I mean cmon, i am ordering for my aunt staying in US. Google what you should be concerned is getting the money of course and not the person who is ordering it. I did not want my aunt to be burdened with the process of placing an order an all. Just wanted her to receive.)
6. Looked into BestBuy as new stock of LTE have arrived. Says carrier is AT&T ( Dont want AT&T since i stay in India).
7. Amazon has some seller selling at 500+ dollar ( Dont want to buy from him at that price of course)
8. Ebay is overpriced at the moment (both India and US (got paypal account for that))
So now I do not know what is the next possible step i need to take.
Can someone suggest me some way i could get this ?
If anyone has gone through the same, can you help me out if you have found a way to buy the same.
Link for Bestbuy: Nexus 7 2013 32GB LTE Unlocked - AT&T Sim
Update 1 (8/10/2013 - 10:27 AM): Checked with Bestbuy and they said that it is the unlocked version with AT&T sim. So i went ahead with best buy and ordered the product. I will discarding the sim once i get it to india.
BestBuy also throws in some free goodies like 6 months of Antivirus and 6 months unlimited Cloud Storage.
It has also given this model for a cheaper final price than Google Play Store. I got charged with lesser tax than what is normally charged by Google.
Update 2 (08/10/2013 - 10:30 PM): : My order status has changed from Order Received --> Payment Validated --> Preparing Order.
Order Status:: 1 item(s) - Order in process of being fulfilled; Usually ships in 3 - 5 days. :fingers-crossed: to get it early.
Update 3 (08/10/2013 - 11:55 PM): Order Status:: 1 item(s) shipped via STANDARD on 10/08/13 via
Tracking Number: UPS xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
Update 4 (14/10/2013 - 5:15 PM): Shipment reached destination As mentioned as 5 days.

I have seen that thread. It mentions about the wifi versions and not the LTE one. checked the adorama and it looks good but there is not much information or pictures of the same. so i am a bit skeptical to proceed. BH photo does not have LTE.
I am looking for 2013 version. 2012 3G is available on flipkart but dont want that.
Method will work on any model as u just wants to buy from play store ,Do one thing mail to that particular website or have chat with them & ask them when they will be in stock , & they will list it on there websites. Did you tried office max ? Or ask borderlines to order they will buy for u but some bucks you will needed to pay them ...

Interesting. I found the LTE on the Best Buy website but not in stores. Almost all of the retail stores in the US do not stock the LTE. There may be some exceptions in a few well known stores like Fry's (unsure if stocking LTE) or some NYC retailers (B&H, etc).
For most US city locations the LTE model is simply not (yet) stocked in stores. In my opinion, depending on where you go in the US, the Best Buy option to ship to store in 3-5 days is best. Also, if you have some Best Buy coupons, etc, you might save some money.
Thanks for the info about Best Buy, I did not know until you mentioned it. Good luck.
It does not matter about AT&T or T-Mobile or neither because Google only tosses SIM card activation kit in the box. No other difference in the US.

how is it better than sending directly to a home address?
So by your second point i can go ahead and order the same and i throw away the at&t/tmobile sim-kit is it? if i remove the sim, then it is the same as normal unlocked with support for any 3G/4G capable sim ?
Bob.. thanks to you i have got some hope :fingers-crossed:

No big difference ordering for in store pickup or home delivery. The SIM brand makes no difference. Any micro SIM will work if the LTE bands are supported. You might research which bands exist in your area and which bands are supported by the device.
I've seen a thread discussing setting the LTE bands using "secret dialing codes". This would likely void your US warranty. I'm not sure if it could work.
I just noticed today - Best Buy in North Carolina now shows some stores with "in stock - in store" on LTE Nexus 7. I might stop to see if they have the ones with SIM card or not.
Good luck.
Update 3: Order Status:: 1 item(s) shipped via STANDARD on 10/08/13 via

Late update as i was on a holiday.
Product reached the destination after 5 working days.
Currently working fine. No glaring issues seen till date.
Working with Indian SIM? Also are there any branding marks? I am also planning to get one for myself.
