I know many people outside of the chosen few countries want to get their hands on this latest android offering from the G-mothership. Down here in New Zealand we have the network through Vodafone to use the phone, but what I'm wondering is the following...
Is there a technical reason why the phone want work in countries outside the current lucky ones?
Does the online Activation require you to be in one of those countries, or limited to those countries? Or is activation optional?
Can anyone think of any other reasons or workarounds?
I'm planning to get the phone through the UK and send it back to NZ. All I really need to know is that I'm not shipping a $800NZ "superphone" paper weight.
Any help appreciated, I know other people will find this info useful in other countries.
Currently using a HTC Touch Diamond 2 that I got shipped from Hong Kong and its been working fine. Hoping the same applies to the Nexus One
Hey I live in New Zealand also. Currently I am waiting for my nexus one to be shipped from California to Auckland, there's more details at geekzone.co.nz under Android
Sweet as, good to hear someone else is trying.
You can use a reship service like shipitto or demail
http://demailbox.com/
demail is probably the best because they're based in delaware which doesnt add tax. Also I think shipping to the US is free when you order a nexus.
So you would pay demailbox a fee for handling your package and providing a 'virtual' US address in delaware, and the shipping from there to your country.
You would pay google just for the phone and free shipping to the virtual US mailbox.
Then you'd pay tax/duty when it enters your own country. Really the only extra here is the demailbox fee, as you'd have to pay the rest even if google shiped to you.

I had no clue it was region locked =/ or am i understanding this wrong. I thought they were just selling it in those countries but not just enabling them in those countries. I'm also waiting on mine
babijoee which country are you in?
There's no region lock, but you need to look at the frequencies that are supported.
Its also unclear if the phone is linked to the google checkout account it was bought from for activation.
I went through the standard prompts on the N1 and didn't see anything about a specific "registration".. I imagine I could have used any of my Gmail accounts to setup the device. The word "registration" never came up.
We were unable to find any Nexus One phones to activate.
If you purchased your phone as an upgrade, you should transfer your SIM card from your old T-Mobile phone to your Nexus One. Only ported phone numbers require activation. Contact T-Mobile Customer Care with further questions.
Ahh that makes sense So activation isnt an issue

Hey i live in Delaware. Think there is a business in this for me..lol. I will be an intermediary ;-)
Edit: Not to mention I work at UPS
Dears,
here is what you need to do..
Get a US proxy ... or you cant order via Google Checkout (IP checking)
They accept none US Credit Cards... well at least they took my Kuwaiti... (your bank my stop this not them !!!)
Ship to your "US" address ... I use BorderLinx (Owned by DHL !)
They (G) shipped mine overnight to "OH" (Seems they ship from nearest warehouse so that they Raise US TAX... !)
Mine "arrived" on Friday.. and is currently on route to Kuwait... I'll get it on Tuesday..
So the whole thing including US TAX, Shipping(Express->US->Q8) and customs (Here) cost $678...
No issues with the Freq - 3G as the N1 supports ROW (Rest of World) it only has issues with the US...
BTW the Shipping weight is 1.57KG (Fedex AWB stated 0.9KG) as stated by DHL..
Working one

Look under "Android Dev Phone 1". This IS an HTC Dream, and it ships with the engineering bootloader and a root-enabled system image. It also comes from a reputable source, AND Google is itself on-the-line for it.
Or you could always order the android dev phone from google/brightstar.

Technically Brightstar. I would actually be a little more worried about a return or repair with Brightstar as compared to T-Mobile, as T-Mo probably has the better repair infrastructure in place, given its volume.
By the way, for purchasers outside the United States, you should also consider the possibility that your country's customs office may levy an additional import tariff, because Brightstar will mark the package as a billed/sold good. IIRC i've read some anecdotal reports of this being as high as a few hundred bucks. Check with your customs office.
If you are planning on using it in the US AND you want to have 3G access, might as well just sign up with T-Mo for a new plan. Subsidized phone prices are under $100 now, I believe. Or if you look around you can find ways to get a 1-year contract. Alternately, you can probably also find G1s being unloaded on eBay in the coming weeks as some owners upgrade to the myTouch.
Just some thoughts.
No, NOT technically brightstar. Technically GOOGLE, since YOUR contract is with google. They've just contracted it off to brightstar, but they are still on the line.

Your contract may be with Google (or it may not be, I have no idea since I have not bought an ADP1) but when it comes down to the actual nitty gritty of return and rma work, it seems to be all Brightstar:

hi friends, any other link... coz i cannot find purchase option in none of your links. what i need is a unlocked g1 and i live in us. One more question, is the GPS in G1 is a real gps or will it work only with google maps?
The link I gave you is the correct one. It has instructions on it, you should go back and read it.
You will not get a G1 (which is a nonsense name given for a LOCKED tmobile branded HTC DREAM), you will get an ADP1 HTC Dream with engineering bootloader (and therefore can't be OS-locked) and free of simlocks.
You are required to register for a google developer's account ($25), from which you will be given an order link for the ADP1.
Yes it's a shame that the globalized Google decided to sell N1 in USA and GB only...available in the rest of Europe in the spring...
Really I can't understand why after cloning iPhone customization (and not only...) Google decided also to clone the commercial strategy of the earliest Iphone 2G...Soon Apple realized that there were more iphone in Europe than in USA LOL!!!
Now how to get one in Italy? Who want to buy one for me...

What about the activation button? Does anyone know if there is some kind of activation that binds the phone to the google account from where it is bought (or is this button only for the t-mobile phone)?
Is there anything else to consider before buying it (except the high price) from ebay and using it in Europe?

Thanx for your answer.
I checked ebay and it would cost about 250$ over the real price. Really too much.
no, it only binds it to your google checkout account, not your gmail account.
so you will be able to activate it where you are
It may suck but different markets get different phones at different times. I don't know how many times I have seen a really cool phone only to discover that it will never hit the shores here in the US. This time it worked out that we got the phone.
I guess it comes down to you win some you loose some.

Yes maybe you are right...but not considering a whole market like europe...like italy, where people go on purcheasing technology also in a bad economic period, would be an error!
Let me get one first. Then I can get into shipping out of country. I own an IT business and I have create multiple google accounts under that and perhaps get 5 for each account I make up. I want to make sure the phone can be activated etc before I start ordering phones that may not work later (screwing me and screwing others).

I'm also in Italy at the moment and I have mine on the way only I don't know if my method would work for you. I'm stationed in Sicily for the time being and I used a site called shipitapo.com. Not sure if this site would work for you but I'm willing to bet there is something similar. As for the purchasing part I just went to google checkout and setup my account so all the information was already in the system, including shipping address and credit card. Then I had my brother who is in the states log into my google account and purchase it for me. He just had to click a couple of links and because everything was already setup. Now its on the way. hopefully you can find something similar. Might be able to use a US proxy to be able to log into you google account and purchase it.
@SpiersA
good idea! I should need a brother, and in usa! About shipitapo.com, it's because Google won't ship it abroad?
Well, according to the iPhone wiki there are 6.4 million iPhones (of 33 million total) in the US alone. Considering Google is an American company, and the App Marketplace had first purchasing support in the US as well, it makes sense to distribute a handset with this much probably popularity in the areas that are easier to support first. Not to mention they partnered with T-Mobile US (an existing partner) for subsidized handset sales and will likely get a huge bump in volume just from that alone.
I have to agree with the earlier comment about how often I've seen really nice phones only to have them never show up in the US (or after they've already become quite out of date). It's nice having top-tier phones start in the US first and then move out from here. A truly global launch with so many new moving parts at once (new hardware, new version of the OS that might not be fully localized yet, thousands of market apps that still don't work with the DROID, etc) would be a total nightmare and make no sense at all.
And yesss...I found how to place an order from all over the world. Just placed mine from Italy. It has been easy...I will reveal it ad soon as I get shipping confirmation!

It wasn't actually that bad looking back eh?
Hey so I have been searching for the best place to buy a HD2 T9193 so I can use it on AT&T US 3G network. Everywhere I look, there seems to a consensus of anywhere from $800-1000. Then I find this guy, who's hotmail email address is cherryda78, who is selling them for $299 plus shipping. After emailing him he says would be $30. Here are some of the ads he has up online.
**So apparently I cannot post links because I am a new user. I copied the links to a .txt and attached it to this post. How I do I go about getting verified btw?**
I emailed him and he responded the next day with this. Below is our email thread:
Mr. Cherry Da,
I am interested in purchasing the HTC HD2 phone you have listed here and here (these were links). I have been dreaming of this phone for about 4 months now, and to get it would be just amazing. I know you can unlock the radio and run it on US 3G with AT&T. I do have some questions though. You have the phone listed for $299 USD. Is that correct? It seems much lower than most other sites right now, so I am pleasantly surprised but cautiously skeptical. Could you please provide some more information for me? How come you are offering it at such a great price?
Thank you so much!

Seems very shady to me, but for $300, I almost want to take the gamble. My question is if anyone has bought a HD2 from this guy, or would buy. Also, what has everyone paid for your phone? And where did you get it?
Thanks!
Telstra doesn't even sell it that cheap... so fishy...
it is either fake or stolen.
Hahaha Western Union or Bank Transfer - so you have absolutely NO recourse when (not if) this transaction goes south.
"Commenwealth" of Australia? Really?
If you want to throw out $330, send it to me instead!
The same guy is selling the Supersonic for €236! Does HTC have a massive leak in their supplychain that they are totally unaware of?
Please don't send this guy your money. The price is huge red flag and the Western Union or bank transfer only is an even larger red flag. If you send this guy your money you'll never see it again and you'll never receive the phone. This is a scam.
Hmm, poor broken english + only accepts western union or bank wire transfer + rediculous low price = SCAM to me. If it sounds to good to be true.....
don't, just ..... don't
Of course it is a scam.
scam.... Run, run very far.
chinese copy, gotta be, put the phrase
HTC TOUCH HD2 T9193 LEO 3G Unlocked USD$299
into google and there are dozens of hits, dollars, euros, and in one the company info is a pda manufacturer in china.
HD2 9193 is the best phone
Telstra charges AU$829.00 outright or AU$80/month for 24 months (but the call rate of Telstra is extremely high).
so $329 is fake or scam
Don't even think about it.
I work for Telstra, and there is no way that anyone can sell a Telstra Branded HD2 for that price. As mentioned earlier, if you buy it outright from a Telstra Shop it costs over A$800. You may be able to find a slightly used one for around A$700 on eBay.
As someone else pointed out,
Commenwealth of Australia, that should of been your first giveaway.
I tell ya, I know you want the phone...We all do but, be careful.
Any one that will not take a credit card for a high dollar purchase
is someone you need to avoid.
Ebay is the best or Amazon. At least you can track your
order by purchase.
Buy it and give us some feedback
buy it,I pay you $350.
Don't do it! My brother did the same thing on a weight machine set that was for $400 n normally it goes for $1200 n he send a money order n never got the weight machine n he couldn't do anything about it. Its a scam!! Don't do it!!
Scam
This definitely sounds like a scam, it will either not arrive and you can say goodbye to your cash, or it will be a cheap imitation. I know someone who bought a iPhone (idiot!) through ebay and it turned out to be some other type of handset with an 'iPhone looking' case. Didn't even look like an iPhone next to a real one.... avoid!

I understand this is not exactly a Nexus S related query, but any help will be appreciated.
I'm not from the US ... live in Kuwait. I've asked a friend to get me the phone as I tried my best to get it ... proxy, bestbuy, paypal ... all of it gave me a lot of NOs.
As per the tracking no. my friend will be getting the phone tomorrow. I've asked him to use it for 2 days to check for the known problems (I've send him a list)
My query/ questions is:
He lives in Saratoga, CA (the phone was shipped from Palatine, IL (almost across). Now, once he has done his testing, I would like him to ship it to an Aramex mailbox I have got in Springfield Gardens, NY (yeah again, all the way back across the US). Can someone tell me which would be the cheapest, safest and yeah quickest way for it to be shipped from CA to New York?
I really don't want to trouble him and tell him to check out which is the cheapest, so if one of you'll know, I'd really appreciate guidance.
Thanks & Cheers

US Postal Service (aka the mail) is the cheapest shipping out there, especially across country.
Fed Ex and United Parcel Service can be a little quicker, but they charge a big premium for it.
If your friend does use Postal Service, tell him to buy the extra insurance coverage...it will be a small amount, and a waste of money in the end, but better to be safe than sorry if it's lost or damaged...
edit: PS, you can go online for any of the big three and check rates yourself, by the way...
Thanks distortedloop
Like you've advised, I'll ask him to go the postal service route with insurance.
Went to the usps.gov site, but could not figure out how things work so gave up on it. Will tell my friend to do it.
Thanks again.

Hello everyone, this end of the month I will go on vacation in New York from Italy, and I'd love to buy the new nexus 4, but obviously I can not use the play store not having neither a credit card nor a U.S. place of dispatch . I saw, however, that tmobile will sell in their stores, I was wondering if in addition to the version with contract tmobile also sold only the phone, just in case a higher price than the playstore 349usd. thank you very much in advance.
"Rumor" has it T-Mobile USA will market it up to $ 500.00 without a contract (witch I find ridiculous) BUT that hasn't been confirmed .. At this point they are all speculations.

If the markup turns out to be ridiculous (charging 500 USD for a 350 USD phone) then call your hotel (or wherever you're staying) and see if you can get packages delivered there. The delivery should take less than 5-6 business days, so it's doable if you're staying in America more than a week. If that's not the case, then you could always find a quick free vpn trial, vpn to America and purchase the phone before you get here so it's at your hotel before you are (just have them hold it if they will, again make sure it's ok before you do so). Good luck! Enjoy your stay!

Unfortunately my problem is: to buy something on playstore U.S. you have to pay with a American credit card , which unfortunately (and I would say of course ) I did not. I had also thought to send me the N4 to the apartment but would be very risky and unreliable. the only solution would be to find someone who will buy me , but who has all this trust in others?
ps: I'd buy it for 500usd I must admit, that the currency exchange is always much less than 549euros that would 700usd. I would only confirm that it is sold in tmobile stores

Really the trust only has to go one way. If you are willing to take the chance then you pay in advance and you are the only one that needs to trust. If you want the other person to send the phone without getting paid first then that person is the only one that needs to trust someone. You could check with some bank to be the go between and let them hold your money until they get the phone.

it is still a complicated and difficult to accomplish. whether I trusted, to give money to someone I do not know (which I do not think I'd do) and if someone you trust to loan me the money. not to mention that I would only public transportation in a city that does not know to pick up the box. of course now I will try other solutions and this will take it into consideration only as a last choice. plus I also find this person that would make me the favor. thanks anyway for your suggestion.
however, still no news / certainty that n4 is sold without a contract?
has anyone had any new news about my question?
