Have you noticed your bookmarks getting screwed up when they result in a redirect?
For example, let's say you have a bookmark to a website that has a special mobile version. When you click on that bookmark, the website automatically redirects you to the mobile page. Fine, that's expected behavior (albeit somewhat annoying when you're using a tablet with a nice big screen like this). The problem is, Honeycomb goes and changes the URL in your bookmark to the URL for that mobile site. What's worse is, if you sync your bookmarks with your desktop system, the bookmark gets modified there as well.
The problem has to do with HTTP Response Codes.
The way that some web servers tell your browser to go to a different URL is through the use of HTTP Response Codes in the HTTP Header. Most of you are familiar with the 404 Response Code which means that the content was not found. There are other response codes, though, including 301 and 302.
A 301 response code is used to redirect you to a different URL when the content you're trying to access has permanently moved. It is designed so that browsers and content indexing systems can update their bookmarks and links automatically.
A 302 response code is meant as a temporary redirect. It is used to redirect you to a different URL for a variety of reasons. There's the aforementioned case where the site's User Agent Sniffer has decided that you should be visiting the mobile version of a given page, some web forum software uses it to redirect you to the newest unread message in your subscription list, etc.
The problem is, Honeycomb seems to treat 302 responses as if they were actually 301 responses. This is incorrect behavior.
I have submitted a bug report, Issue 17566: Incorrect handling of HTTP 302 Status Code (Temporary Redirect) and Bookmarks. I would appreciate it if people would "Star" the issue to increase its visibility.
Thanks!
Same problem here. It also rearranges all your bookmarks each time you open one on both your desktop Chrome browser and your tablet which is rather annoying.
I have a similar problem. It is actually changing the URL to another bookmark with a similar URL. For example, I have one bookmark called "Nexus One" pointing to http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=556 and another one called "Galaxy Tab" pointing to http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1050
Every so often (seems to happen when I launch "Galaxy Tab" from the browser bookmarks widget on the home screen), the "Galaxy Tab" bookmark will be changed to the URL of the "Nexus One" bookmark (the 1050 changes to 556).
Have you seen anything like this?
I have seen that but I haven't investigated it any further.
I had several bookmarks for specific Craigslist searches that all got wiped out. Basically, the URLs for all of them were replaced with just the main Craigslist page.
I also had a bookmark for a thread here on XDA get replaced with a link to the main page.
this is hardly a solution to the problem, but why don't you just change your user agent? that way it won't redirect you to the mobile site. mobile sites usually look horrible on a 10 inch screen anyway

I used mobile sites merely as an example. I don't actually run into that problem so much. My biggest problem is with certain forums where I have bookmarked their "Check for new posts" link which uses redirects to send me to the next unread message. That essentially becomes useless with a Honeycomb device... enough so that I have been forced to stop syncing my bookmarks.

Hey all, and I'd like to say I have never seen a forum with so much info on it before....this place is great.
I have two questions regarding my new toy.
1) I read a thread on the site a day or so ago, but clever IE on my desktop has cleared my History so I can't see the pages I've visited - The page had a post from someone listing a whole host of registry hacks and which keys need adjusting etc to make the changes stick. If anyone knows of a thread with a list of all the hacks and the keys to change could you please link it here.
2) I have configured my Gmal account on my XDA and am able to connect and send/recieve ok however I have a slightly different question: I use a forwarded email address from my domain name which forwards my domain name email to my Gmail account, and then on Outlook on the desktop, I use the Reply Address feature to hide the Gmail address so that people see the domain address.
Is there anyway to do this on the built-in Outlook style email client on the device as I've looked about and can't see anything.
Many thanks for any help anyone can provide.
With regards to registry tweaks, the following won't be the exact page your looking for but it's very comprehensive and is regularly updated (so it will more than likely cover all the settings you saw)...
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=WM5_Tweaks_Other
Yep keitaro's link is good.
Include this one also http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard_Tweaks
and the big all tweaks topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=38957
Brilliant - The 2nd one is the thread I was after.
Thanks very much
Sure, you can have your homepage point to google or MSN or some other site.
Wouldn't it great if you could have your own homepage where you can set your own links? Well, hell yeah. Better having to go to favourites > link... etc.
This lady created a HTM page that you can edit and set your own links.
For example on my own page I have links to google.ca, my yahoo email, HoFo, the two social groups I run, my bank's website. All the moment that PIE starts.
Excellent share...
It is easy to setup and you really do not need any HTML experience.
Cheers!

Amazing, it's only 2 weeks ago that I was looking for something exactly like this, as it's a bit of a pain using the favourites in pie. Thanks for the link.
Bit of a pain to edit.
I use Google Bookmarks as my home page. It loads quickly and means I can access my favourites (with tags!) from anywhere. Editing it is even more easily done on my PC.
http://www.google.com/bookmarks/
Although it is good that people are coming out with more options.
You cannot compare a 2k file that pops up instantly when you start off PIE with 10-15 of your favourite links.
Going to Google Bookmarks is not as easy specially if you have tons of bookmarks. Not bad when using a Laptop but not as easy when using a PPC.
But hey, to which is own, right?
check http://mobilust.net/bookmarks via mobile. easy to signup and save you bookmarks. i use it . still needs to be improved but at least designed for mobiles.
I checked it out, promising, but if you don't mind having a small, unknown company knowing all your bookmarks.
no. i wouldn't put my bank accoutn details there lol
Is there an option somewhere in Opera 9.7 which allows you to determine what mobile view you'd like for sites like gmail?
Using Dutty's ROM's I get a nice view of gmail similar to that on the iPhone which is nice and finger friendly.
On almost every other ROM I use it is formatted differently and much harder to use. I even tried installing the version of Opera from Dutty's latest ROM onto other roms and still not the same. The option in Settings for using mobile view isn't what I'm looking for either. Any ideas how to get other ROMs to look like Dutty's when using Gmail.com through the browser?
Hi that's probably because the Opera app in Duttys ROM has fake iphone "User Agent" so that web pages believe it's an iphone.
Anyway, fortunately for you, you can force gmail to display the nice iphone interface by going straight to this specific gmail url:
http://mail.google.com/mail/x/gdlakb-/gp/
Bookmark that url and every time you click it you'll get the nice interface.
Also you can check the different interfaces/modes of gmail here:

Hope it helps Cheers

Thanks for the link! That worked great for Gmail.
Unfortunately, I also have a gmail hosted corporate domain and I'm not sure how to translate that link to access my corporate mail. How can I fake the user agent?
Edit: I found out I could change the Custom User Agent setting in the registry to match Dutty's. Now getting the same mobile experience I was hoping for in other ROMs... It wasn't actually the iPhone view but I like it.
before you start shouting nooob, yes i have searched and tried everything.
heres the crack,i cant get onto the normal facebook site, only mobile.ive changed my user prefs and all the other things in opera 10 settings.could it be something to do with voda fone.or can u give me some new ideas
did you change the user agent to make the facebook webservers think the phone is a pc? i had the same problem in opera 9.7 and changing the user agent string to one for windows 7 running IE8 sorted it for me.
I think Facebook changed something lately. I could always get to the normal site without trouble by using the normal http://www.facebook.com/home.php?m2w address before, and suddenly last week it started directing me to the mobile site. It seems it stopped now. Try to use that address, if you end on the mobile site click touch site at the bottom, then on the bottom of the touch site select normal site. It *should* get stored in a cookie after that, as it's what worked for me...

Seems like a simple thing, but I can't find a good solution.
I have some gdocs spreadsheets that I want to download (as xls or ods) and then edit via thinkfree. Yes I know you can do gdocs spreadsheets online via browser on my sgt. However, the gdocs spreadsheet mobile is not to my liking.
There are several Market apps that do downloading or synching of gdocs to/from android. A couple I have tried are 'my docs' and 'gdocs' but these don't support spreadsheets or I couldnt figure out how to make them do spreadsheets; they worked ok for text docs.
The online spreadsheat, on a desktop, does have a good save as feature. However, google is too smart and won't let me use the desktop experience from my sgt, even when I ask (nicely).
And, I prefer a low or no cost solution. I do see that Documents To Go suggests that you can do this; that isn't low/no cost.
Any other options?
Oh I tried think free online, too. Despite having some sort of 'login with google account' feature; I didnt see how it provides links or other techniques for getting at my gdocs. Maybe I am doing it wrong. Oh and I'd like to avoid signing up for another online service too. Besides I do shared authoring of some gdocs; no way could I get others to switch to a new online docs service.
___________
Found a solution. Reading closely the 'not suppurted browser' page, you can add an override flag (to the submitted url) that instructs the full google docs web experience to skip th browser check. By doing this, I can get the docs browser page of google docs that has a control that allows me to download my spreadsheets.
The url is like:
https://docs.google.com/DocAction?browserok=true#home
You need to add an app like 'Download all Files' so that the stock browser will save the file.
Hope this helps someone else!
use full desktop mode in your browser,
downlaod FIREFOX, and use it to download /open with think free
firefox is the only android broswer that lets me properly download/OPEN WITH by clicking on a link and I can select which app.
;-)
I think office suite pro will perfectly fit your need. After 30days of trial you can remove and re_install the app. Have Fun!
