Any backdraws for a US AT&T customer to purchase this? - Xperia Play General

So I've been ready to upgrade since October last year (ftr, when the xperia play's first projected release date was before they went crazy pushing it back)
I'm tired to the wait for the play to come to AT&T, and there's no way in hell I'm ever going back to Verizon. Are there any severe network issues I'll encounter if I just grab an unlocked GSM one off eBay? ...or any higher end speed opportunities I'd be missing out on by not waiting to get it direct from my carrier?
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

Nope. The R800a is virtually identical to the R800at that will inevitably come out on AT&T at some point. They use the same frequency bands. The only difference is that the R800at will be AT&T branded and bootloader locked, while the R800a (depending on your source) will be bootloader unlockable and unbranded. I have an R800a on AT&T and no problem using 3G.
The only problem is finding the unbranded/unlocked version. As far as I know the only R800a's out there that match this description came from a developer conference or summit of some kind. There might be a few left on eBay. Your alternative is picking up a Canadian R800a, which is SIM locked to Rogers and bootloader locked. You can SIM unlock it for a fee, and should be able to configure the APN manually for AT&T use.
Whatever you do, don't get the R800i, that is, if you care about 3G. You'll only get EDGE on AT&T

I bought the R800a from another XDA member. Its data speeds are a lot faster than my Inspire 4G was. Plus you don't have to fool with the AT&T bloat and all of the usual stuff.

The warranty will be a lot better if you waited for the at&t. Buying a lemon will ruin your life haha

I am using one right now and you wont regret it. The data speeds are actually decent on the network and the call quality is great. Indoor signal strength could be a little stronger but haven't had a dropped call yet in two weeks. I just can't update to 2.3.3 yet.

Reception overall has been terrible for me, and I've had several instances where I drop calls and then reception won't come back for another 2-3 minutes. Could be a network error in my area, but overall, I'm NOT pleased with the reception on my unlocked/unbranded R800a.
Note that you will not be able to update to 2.3.3 (not yet, and no one at SE wants to say when), and you will be locked out of many things in the Playstation Pocket App ("not supported in your region").
No idea how the warranty will work, but SE has been very kind to me over the years in regards to repairs from international/unofficial phones.

It's unofficial of course, and will that method work on an R800a? Won't the radio firmware be different since it's not the R800i? I'm a noob, so be gentle.

All you have do is get the apn setting for the phone company you use and it should work. I have a R800a and works perfectly fine

I found an excellent deal on one and snagged it as soon as I got the cash.
So I won't have to worry about it saying that something isn't supported in my region?

The Playstation Pocket and Xperia Play app are region set as soon as you connect to a carrier. So on AT&T, you won't see anything in Playstation Pocket at the moment aside from Crash Bandicoot (and search returns back the message "not supported in your region"), but FPSe works better right now anyway. Xperia Play app doesn't show the same titles as in other regions, but you can buy that stuff from other places – Gameloft's site for their games for instance.
emann56 is right, R800a of any kind can now be rooted on 2.3.3. It is unofficial, but it does work. If you want root on your device I'd go through the process 1st before even setting anything up... but that's just me. Reports are that not wiping before flashing causes problems.

So will I run into any complications if I, say, wanted to get the latest Gameloft games? Eternal Legacy, Modern Combat 2, Shadow Guardian, NOVA 2 and Sacred Odyssey are pretty much the major reasons I want this.

I haven't. That's from the Gameloft website and has nothing to do with the Playstation Pocket app, if I'm not mistaken.

Okay, okay... how would I go about officially getting Gameloft games for my Xperia PLAY exactly?
Even though my play isn't here, I went ahead and set it as my phone on the Gameloft website, and whenever I try to set up an order for a game (such as Eternal Legacy), I get stuck at the carrier screen where AT&T is not listed.

AT&T blocks non-Market application installs on their branded phones which is why you can't get it to work on your current phone. The R800a is unbranded so you can choose 'Unknown sources' in settings -> applications when you get it to allow direct downloads and installs of Gameloft games (and any other APKs for that matter).

No I know that. I actually have my current phone rooted, cyanogenmodded up and such so non-market apps are a synch.
What I mean is that, since most gameloft games arent on the market, I'm trying to legitimately purchase some gameloft games from gameloft's website and at&t wasn't listed as an option.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App

I am using a 800a on AT&T now. Once you go onto the gameloft website it will detect you have a Xperia Play and once you purchase it will download the apk and then just install. I even purchased the UK versions while they were on sale a few weeks back and it all works the same. No worries Gameloft games download and work perfect. No AT&T involved. The phone is unlocked.

Thank you all so much!
I have it now, and it's wonderful! I was expecting to have to do all kinds of insane rooting and ROM flashing to get it to a level of competent performance, but unlocked out-of-the-box it's actually working really damn well.
If I root it though, can I wipe out some of the useless stuff? Like the Chinese Keyboard, Get Games, On Demand, Retail Demo, Ringbacks, Setup Guide, TrackID, Widgets On/Off,etc?

adb shove iPad2post.apk to /forum/thread

Wow... okay.
So I gave my 2.3.2 Xperia Play a GingerBreak and got all them superuser goodies. Went into root explorer and cleaned out all that pre-installed Rogers stuff (that I couldn't even use if I wanted to).
...but my device was having some of the slowest booting ever so I decided to give 2.3.3 a shot... and now my root is gone :'(

[Q] Arc root

is there a change we would have root soon as the Arc wil be released ?
otherwise i have to go for the SGS2
We won't know til we try it! Shouldn't think it would take long though..
Sent from my X10 using XDA and Swype.
That all depends on how locked down the Arc has been. The X10 still hasn't had the bootloader fully cracked yet.
locked bootloader?
will the arc have a locked bootloader?
i mo more will buy a device with a locked bootloader.
Yes, the Arc, Neo, Pro and Play come with a locked bootloader. Can't see why SE would unlock it.
thats silly though... In that case, a lot of android/root lovers wouldnt buy the phone simply because the bootloader is locked.
For instance, I do not even consider the atrix a choice for a future phone because of the locked bootloader, I wish they let you do what you wanted with your phone, because they can always say **** you if you violate the warranty

Many are going with the locked bootloader now, even Samsung ( though developers managed to unlock in a short time )
Plus, you'll be amazed by the speed of 2.3 OS and its functionality, so I don't think we'll need Custom ROMs and rooting ( keep in mind that most users here seek those because of the stock OS being unreliable and very slow ) talking about all devices prior to 2.3 OS
+1 that was the main reason i rooted in the end... Still on stock rom on my x10 but had optimised for performance. Won't both doing that if the arc runs well.. I like the ui a well as the physical design.. That's why I choose SE over htc/ others.

That is for sure a fact for me as well and as you mentioned only reason to go with SE. (Sony in General).
Rooting will let you do more tweaks as much as possible and unless you are into playing with your phone deep, you don't need it. Hopefully SE will do a better job in terms of support than what they did with X10 and X2 and X1.

True, but I like using it to backup unwanted preloaded system apps etc. before removing/freezing them Already have a paid license from when I was screwing around with the ROM on my IS01, and it's a little easier than digging around in the folders for the right apks.
And yeah, wireless tethering is a big one. No idea how I forgot about it.

As far as I know, Sony Ericsson is the only vendor that has firmware specific for Belgium. On the X10 for example you can only get Youtube if you manually install the APK from somewhere else. (X10 = 2.1, so no Youtube from the market anyway)
At the press event the people from Sony Ericsson said you can just install Youtube from the market on 2.3 (I think). In any case, I just ordered the Dutch version, it comes with completely generic firmware, and faster updates. Belgium was always a few weeks behind.
Think this has gone a bit off topic, but in general the arc should be an easy one to root, since it can be purchased with an unlocked bootloader ect.

Mine has some minor branding - the bootup screen is branded, and there are some annoying rogers things (ringbacks [ugh], some kind of backup manager, ringtones, etc) installed as applications - I'm going to root and get rid of a lot of that stuff, but overall the branding is minimal and not horrifyingly intrusive.
There's no external/physical branding on the device I got from them (launch day)

[Q] Verizon users - how to delete backup assistant?

So when I got my phone 2 days ago the verizon guy INSISTED on downloading and installing backup assistant when I specifically tried to cancel it because I don't need it (your data backs up to google, but he says "well now you will be double backed up" I don't need a double backup!). To avoid an argument i just figured whatever I'll just delete it when I get home, well low and behold you can't uninstall this app now that its installed!
So is there any way to delete this app without rooting the phone? I don't want to root it, it runs fine for my needs as is, and I have other rooted android devices (tablets) for when I want to play and experiment. Any ideas?

Umm, every Xplay device at my store has BackUp Assistance already on it including mine. Didn't download it. Pretty much every Android device on VZW (except Devour, Droid 1 and Eris) all had this preinstalled and to get rid of it you need a root.
Also, I realize that he might have insisted in turning on the backup assistance feature on your phone but please understand, we get rated by VZW on how many smartphones we sell and our stores get rated on how many phones we turn Backup Assistance on. It is one of our requirements to do for every phone activation since they made it a free service. Verizon got tired of everyone complaining that there was no easy free way to back up your contacts in case the phones were damaged so it is a program that they have as bloatware on every device and if we dont put it on e100% of devices we get questioned if we forgot or the customer said they didn't want it or a plethora of things. The Backup Assistance does not really hurt anything except use up like 5.8mb of memory and check your contacts nightly for a backup. I mean yes you have an Adnroid device, it back's up to google. What would happen if the next time you got a phone you chose you dont like Android anymore? That BlackBerry looks good, or god forbid the iPhone 6g (lol) This at least gives you a quick contact backup to another device other then android.
Moral of my story is he was doing his job so he can keep his job, don't blame him, blame VZW. ^_^

Anyway when ever we first power up a new device after we have it activated in the system we are shown the activation screen on the android devices. In our phones case, the Green Android. After we call in *228 Option 1 and the phone programs itself the very next thing that pops up is Google, then Backup Assistant, then the "Other Account" screen. I mean if you really don't want it running Hard Reset the phone. And start over skipping the activation of backup assistant. I have no idea if this would make it still run in the background or not but it would stop it from uploading and downloading your contact information every day.

I can confirm that even when you do a full hard reset, that it still runs in the background even if you don't want it and even if it is not in the set-up account list. It is set as a system service, and uses about 2.3-6MB of active memory, and around 15MB total memory (I think this includes linked libraries). Also, it is correct in that it can't be removed unless the phone is rooted. Which VZW was kind enough to lock us out of, and make sure that SonyEricsson wouldn't allow us a method to unlock the bootloader (despite SE's general policy).
Oh yes, I completely blame Big Red on this one. They should not have services running in the background that are not absolutely neccessary to the running of the phone. These extraneous services are part of what slow down phones and fill them with junk.
Also, VZW forcing an agreement with GameLoft for them to only allow R800x (the Verizon CDMA version of Xperia Play) to only be obtained directly through the VZWapps store (at an inflated cost, and with zero support) is also directly attributed to Verizon and their heavy handed tactics. Every game in the Play Launcher under "More Games" all link to the VZWapps store and not android market nor the direct creators web store. On top of that, the links are often non-functioning, and the store is often broken or down.
If you can't tell, I'm _VERY_ unhappy with VZW as a company. The local salespeople and techs? I'm happy with them.

As much as I love the phone Verizon completely ruins the experience that Sony Ericsson tried to have the phone give the consumer. I am ashamed at what they locked us out of and hell I sell their products.
Honestly I am wondering where the hell our PS1 Exclusive titles are that are redone for our phones... One would assume that this could have been plugged into the PS3 and PSN to download the PS1 titles and maybe even then Mini's but that isn't even available for this PlayStation Certified phone.
Part of me regrets the purchase but I still get to play NES, SNES, Atari, Genesis, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, MAME, PS1 (FPse) and alot of other things that are on the market with it, but whats a playstation phone with no PSN and 1 Playstation game... and honestly I hated Crash back when it was new... I wish I could uninstall the POS.
This actually reminds me of a question I had. Should you download these games from the market instead do they
a) still support the control pad
b) still show up in the launcher
And yeah.. where the hell are all the games? Aren't there way more games available in Europe?
PS this by far is not the first time this has happened with them. I bought a Motorola v710 when it came out with VZW and while it advertised all the cool BT things you could do (file transfer, tethering, syncing, etc) verizon locked out everything except support for headsets and speakerphones, to force people to use vcast and other paid for services, but didn't tell anyone. Needless to say after a class action lawsuit that they lost they had to offer to buy back every v710 + accessories etc and give the person a new phone of their choice, or cash, AND let you out of your contract with no penalty. I ended up getting a RAZR which the lovely verizon version omitted the microSD slot.

I tried going to Gameloft's app store website and it seemed to allow me to download a "R800x" version of any game they had. I didn't buy any but it didn't put up any roadblocks. do you know if those games would go into the launcher? Many are not available from the Launcher's list.
Also, why for example does assassins creed show a "subscription" for $2.99 or "first download" for $6.99, whats the subscription?
Either way if I did buy that game id go straight to gameloft as its 2 bucks cheaper there and its buy one get one free this month!

subscription gets you the full game but you pay 2.99 a month that you have the subscription, this is best if you wanna try the game out or know you will beat it in a month, but 99 times out of 100 buying it is better.

Ohh and I attempted to use Gamelofts store to purchase a game, said my credit card was invalid. umm it isnt, it is what I use for everything. Not to mention their store is a ***** to navigate through. Long story short, cant buy anything on their website for my phone.

Hmm... I kinda wanna try it myself just to see.... That would be really crazy if they were able to lock out website purchases.
I love how the games are mysteriously missing from the Android Market....
Gameloft's games are not missing "mysteriously". Gameloft dropped them from the Market.

Ahh I was under the impression that Verizon blocked the apps on the market as I have seen with other apps on other devices in the past, to force you to purchase for $2 more through the Vcast store. Is this just new games or something? I see Apshalt 6, NOVA 2, and Modern Combat 2 in the Market on the web (for the same price Verizon sells at) for example, but Assassins Creed HD is not there.

[Q] going to buy one today, got some questions

I am going to get one of these bad boys from ATT this morning. I was curious if this is the model that I can pay to get the bootloader unlocked, or if this is unknown right now?
I like the idea of a pure vanilla GB, and the idea of throwing CM7 onto this device!
I am sick of waiting around for the gs2, and frankly, I am interested in the emu scene for the Play.
Has anyone got MAME up and running smoothly? I have the full romset of MAME titles from 2005.
TL;DR If I go get the Play from ATT this morning, can I unlock the bootloader and root it straightaway?
The BL unlock has worked in all XPlay models to date, so you can trust it will work for you too.
There are a couple of Mame emulators for your. Pick the one you find best and be happy.

All emus work excellently on the play. Snes/Gameboy/Megadrive/Genesis/Amiga etc etc etc
The up to date emus are thus -
N64oid - bought off slideme (not on market). Works pretty good.
FPSE - bought off market place. Works awseomely.
Native PS1 emu - Use the convertor in the other threads to convert games. Then run games in software mode by editing the preferences.xml file, works excellenty. Even sets up your pocket playstation with pretty icons.
Mame -
Jrioni Arcade - Bought off market. Works excellently. No save states.
Mame4Droid - Free off market. Works excellently. No save states.
Tiger Arcade - Free from his website. Works excellently, although analog controls do not work, so you cant play driving games etc. Save states for paid version, but these currently do not work.
All in all, if you want a portable emulator, this is the best thing on the market at the moment.

I went to check this out today and really wanted to like it but I couldn't get over how cheap it felt on the exterior. Plus the att Rep was a d1ck.

The back cover especially seems a bit cheap cause it's flimsy, but in reality the flexibility makes it less likely to crack. The build quality of the gamepad is definitely not cheap though.
Just remember that demo handsets are always abused and the one you buy will feel better.

PlayStation Store for PS Mobile coming October 3

I didn't see this posted anywhere, apologies if I am late, but they have announced a date for PS Mobile.
"PlayStation Mobile users, you may have just felt a brief phantom tug at your wallet. That's because Sony just announced the PlayStation Store for PlayStation Mobile is coming on October 3.
The first countries allowed to access PlayStation Mobile content through the PlayStation Store are Japan, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Australia. At launch on October 3, there will be 30 games available for download."
http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/19/playstation-store-for-ps-mobile-opens-its-virtual-doors-on-oct/
I've asked this before, but I will ask again. I have a PLAY from Verizon running 2.3.4 and the PS Store app already downloaded (although no access to any games yet here in the US). Does this announcement mean it'll populate my store with games? The reason I ask is because here in the US, we've been kinda screwed. No PSOne games, and 2.3.4 crippled my Gtalk and Play Music. If this update means I can FINALLY download some new games, I'd be a little more happy.
I hope so, if they at least open the market to the u.s. and give us the same game library as other countries that'd be awesome.

Are there any details about these new titles?
I'm thinking it's going to be another app/store to download. This just sounds like something they would do.
I read around Gamescom that Sony announced that they will remove PSOne Classics from the Android PS Store once PS Mobile launches. This also applies to their existing PlayStation Certified devices like the Xperia Play, Xperia S, and their tablets. I find this to be a really dumb move, but maybe they just didn't want to put forth the effort of re-licensing everything for Android or figuring out how to segregate the Vita's store from PS Certified devices. Either way, it looks like the only games that you'll be able to run are the ones that have been available through the Google Play Store.
Really?! good idea, i wanne more ps games
About your situation, well, I think you can find other way to download or install games.
It's live! Has anyone given it a try yet? I kept getting an error when I tried to login until I rebooted the phone.

Thanks! I just found that as well.
Do you know if he tried rebooting after installing it? That seems to have done the trick for me. Although my Play isn't the AT&T version, it's an unlocked R800a that I'm using on AT&T.
I've used it on my Xperia Tablet S (the new one so it's the fully official app/store and everything lol - just to clarify )
TBH.... IMO..... It's not all that... I haven't tried it on my play yet but if the content is anything the same as what i can get on my tablet... then I wont be jumping for joy any time soon
The UI is nicer though... A lot nicer I'm just hoping that better games are on the way :highfive:
This needed to launch this with the xperia play. Now the device is all but dead.
Yeah I too have the Xperia Tablet S where it actually popped up with a notification telling me to install PSM.
As for the Xperia Play I got nothing although I'm on custom Rom xd.
Both devices have the same content btw. Though it's still great to finally have a store

QFT. The Xperia Play could have really been something, but it was so poorly supported that it never went anywhere. And because it didn't do well, we probably won't see a proper successor. That's the part that really kills me. I can only hope that I'm wrong because I would love a Xperia Play 2 with specs like the upcoming Xperia T/TL and a gamepad. Until then, I'm just biding my time because nothing else really interests me.

The store has launched but all of the PS1 games that were on the previous version of the app are gone What happened to them?
I deleted the software update function on my rom, since I'm rooted and have deleted bloatware.
Is there any way to get this? Market? Maybe the software update apk?
Edit: Here we are: http://www.playstation.com/psm/store/en.html
