Phone has 2 ESN's...Activation problems! - Epic 4G General

Ok here is the deal.
The the phone has two esn's. THe one on the back of the phone underneath the battery is a clean esn. The one inside the phone belongs to someone on a different account and she (sprint used she thats how i know its a girl) has her phone activated on her account with no problems.
They can't use the clean esn on the back of the phone to get the msl because the msl to unlock the phone belongs to the girls account. We can't go into the settins and remove her esn and put mine in.
If we try using esn from the back of the phone to get the msl the msl wont unlock the phone.
I have to bring it to a coperate store tomorrow morning. The sprint tech said that they may be able to completly wipe the phone and the esn should return to the one on the back of the phone.
If the coperate store can't do it, is it possible for me to change the esn of the phone to the esn thats on the back of the phone. Im not trying to do anything illegal. The phone is clean the esn is clean, it belongs to me However its just recognizing her esn instead of the one that belongs to the phone.
I flashed the swiss cheese rom if I odin back to stock will coperate know that I rooted the phone?
I dont want to return the phone becuase I got a really great deal. 180$ and its in mint condition. but the seller offered a full return.

First, thnxs for creating a new thread and not hijacking the other... If you Odin back to stock, they shoudln't know anything about you rooting your phone, but fwiw, don't offer any additional information about custom roms or anything... If they ask you anything about it, pretend not to know...
The fact that you got such a great deal on the phone, means the seller probably new there was an issue to begin with... After your trip to Corporate, if you are not satisfied, you can either return the phone for a full refund (if that is what the seller guaranteed) or see if you can get a discount or a new one from Corporate... I've had to take my phone back already and they didn't have any refurbs yet to hand out... I've only had my phone for about 2 months...
Edit: After you Odin back to stock, see what happens... You may clear out whatever issue is on the phone to begin with... Worth a shot...

I really didn't want to hold up that rom thread anymore. I figured I would get more attention if I created a thread.

Yeah I was planning on playing stupid.
Do you mean that they will offer of a new epic? I probably need to put 7$ protection on it then huh? I just bought it but I bought it on ebay.
I will odin back to stock tonight. I am waiting for my usb cables. They say they should be in today.
If they wont give me a new phone will it be possible for me to program the esn into the phone?
Im a complete noob when it comes to android but I would be willing to learn and give it a shot.
Giving the phone back is pretty much my last option. I really dont want to. I already spent around 50 dollars on accesories for this phone.

Corporate may or may not make you an offer for a new device, but I would put the insurance on the phone anyway... Purchasing off of eBay may only allow you to take advantage of the typical mfg warranty, and not one offered by your isp... the insurance on the phone (which you will be adding) usually doesn't ask for proof of purchase, but they usually reserve the right to provide a refurb product of equal or greater value...
Again, reprogramming the ESN for the phone is illegal, even if it the correct one (the premise is that if you can do it, then you will do it even when the ESN is incorrect)... Your option there would be to leave it to Corporate, and they may not do it... They may swap out your phone and then fix it and sell it as refurb...
As for the accessories, if the last option becomes the only option, you can probably find the phone at your local Radio Shack with a $100 down and walk out of the store with a new device and a two year shackle (errr contract)...
Good Luck...
Edit: Oh, and any micro usb cable will work... Especially one from a blackberry - nice, thick and sturdy...

regardless of your esn...you can get your current msl with a free market app
msl reader
your msl is not tied to the esn
your phone was reprogrammed...there is no mistake
without delving too much on this forum because its not permitted...i will say this
the epic is an easy phone to program
and for the record...the epic is an MEID device...the ESN is calculated from the MEID

It's possible to "repair the ESN" though it, along with the discussion surrounding that topic are both highly frowned upon. It is not for someone who lacks a relatively deep understanding of CDMA (and Google!) so I would suggest looking around local classified ads to see if someone is able to assist with reverting back to stock.
With Epic's being so cheap now through BB/RS/Sprint, it may be wise just to buy it from there and call it a day.

ok guys I may have found a way but my first obstacle is that my phone wont go into USB debugging.
I turn it on and connect the usb but it doesn't say usb debuggin in the notification taskbar.
If I try turning it off while the usb is connected it tells me. "Attention Usb is connected. Remove the cable"
When I connect the usb it tells me that usb is connected.
If I turn usb debugging off and connect the cable it tells me the same thing.
The phone wont go into usb debugging mode.
Im on the swiss cheese rom.
I know the cable works because My Optimus S goes into usb debugging mode when I connect the cable.
Can you guys help me.

why do you need usb debugging?
just curious
go into your dialer and press ##8778#
then change the usb mode to modem (leave uart alone)
may require doing it twice if it pops out of modem mode
then plug your usb cable in

as far as Sprint and their 'system' or network are concerned.. the msl that they have on record that shows up when they enter the MEID, IS the msl that you would need to program back into the phone along with the MEID that's under the battery.
If they run the MEID that's under the battery and it comes back clean, then you're in good shape. .. The corporate store isn't gonna use any software that will write the correct MEID back to the phone.
If you're decent with a computer, and a search engine, I'm willing to bet that you can write the MEID back to the phone that belongs to it and get it activated properly.
Wouldn't be a bad idea to have the corporate store write down that msl (that belongs to the "under the battery MEID' for you as well.. you'll need to write that back to it as well.
PM me if you need a little guidance.
Further discussion is frowned upon but I might have a suggestion or two for you

Having the same problem
guys Im not trying to break the law or do some magic with the esn...
I just want this phone activated. I payed for it. The esn is clean. SPrint even told me. So i dont understand what the big deal is.
Try this. opin Odin. load a tar file EB13 or EC05 or what ever one. on the checkboxes make sure the Phone EFS clear its checked. that will restore the factory ESN back to the phone.. I this know because my epic its on boost mobile. and by accident I checked that box when going back to stock ROM and my boost ESN disapiered completely and it went back to the ESN printed in back of my phone.. I was so freaking pissed. so i had to reflash my boost esn to go back to boost again. so in other words what i did proofs that checking that box will wipe any other ESN and it returns the phone back to original ESN.. So remember check the normal Auto reboot along with Phone EFS clear. let me know if that worked out...

Here is a recommendation from another member. BUt i first have to get my phone to go into usb debugging which its not and its starting to piss me off

USB should be set to PDA for normal everyday usage...
set USB mode to PDA
thats probably why you were having usb issues
i thought you were trying to program the phone which needs USB set to modem mode
UART should always be set to modem mode
the fact that it was already in modem mode is your proof the previous owner modified the phone
all phones ship and function in USB PDA mode

the big deal is that you're in need of "repairing the MEID" on the phone.. it's jacked up and you need a solution to repair the MEID.. the solution is very easy however, we're not able to discuss exactly how to do it on XDA. It's forbidden according to their rules.
What I suggest is sending any member (myself included) a PM and try to get help that way. It's very easy to do.
USB debugging is not necessary, and Odin won't fix your dilemma.
just sayin'

Im trying to get usb debuggin on. I want to flash back to stock using odin but my phone wont go into usb debugging mode.
If I turn on usb debugging and connect the usb cable nothing is happening. It doesn't say usb debugging up top.
If I go to try to unselect usb debugging while the cable is in it tells me "Attention: USB is connected. Remove the cable"
If I turn usb debuggin off, connect the cable and try turning it back on its giving me the same message. ""Attention: USB is connected. Remove the cable"
So my question is at the moment how do I turn on usb debugging.
I have to solve this tonight because tomorrow morning it needs to go to the coperate store

Replied.
To get your phone recognized in order to use Odin, you don't need USB debugging..
1. shut the phone off
2. slide keyboard open
3. hold down '1' while powering on
4. when the yellow triangle shows up you're on 'download' mode.
This is the proper 'mode' to be in to use Odin.
USB debugging is for using 1 click root methods.

This is true. Do what daddymikey says. Once your phone is stock, let us know if your MEID in the phone and the one on the label are the same. A ROM flash before activation could have caused such a simple issue.
By the way, I don't think you can put insurance on a device that has been pre-owned, can you? Only with new devices purchased directly from them, right?... I know when I was working at "The Red-checkmark Network", they wouldn't let you do it. Can you with Sprint?

[FIX] For those that haven't been able to get to Download Mode

If you are having problems getting to download mode, Use the Stock Captivate Cable Only when trying to access Download mode!
Story:
I have struggled with 2 captivates now to get into download mode. I have read tons of arguments back and forth from people that say it is easy to get into download mode, and people who say that it is impossible with their phones.
Well, for some history...On my first captivate, I bricked it and it refused to go into download mode...PERIOD. I proceeded to exchange it(I was within my 30 days), and didn't think much more about it. Well, I installed Cognition 2.2 recently and in the process realized that my new phone would go into download mode just fine by doing the standard process of:
1)remove battery, sim, microsim
2)reinserting battery only
3)holding down both volume buttons
4)inserting usb cable
No problems right? Well, I ended up "bricking" my phone by accidentally deleting my framework-res.apk file(don't ask) and lo and behold, I suddenly could not get it to go back into download mode. I was really pissed at this point and spent all night trying everything all over again.
Well, I decided to give up for the night and go to bed. As I was laying in bed a thought crossed my mind. I had purchased a second usb cable(from ATT) to use with the captivate, and the one time that download mode had worked, I was using the standard captivate cable that came in the box. However, every time it wasn't working I was using my second USB cable. So I got up out of bed to try the stock cable and, lo and behold, it works flawlessly every time.
I would venture to guess that this is what the problem is with most everyone else that can not get their captivates to go into download mode. So, if you haven't tried it give it a shot. And certainly tell everyone you know to use the stock cable only.
I just want to reiterate that the spare cable that would NOT work was purchased from ATT and is the cable that they recommend you purchase as a spare. It wasn't like I got it from ebay or something.
Using a usb cable I got from ebay, monoprice, htc, motorola, and stock samsung cable, I was able to get into download mode everytime...
... also, shouldn't this be in general and not in development?
No USB Hubs or Extenders
RECOMMENDED: Use your stock USB cable that came with the phone.
IMPORTANT: Plug the USB cable into your computers native motherboard USB port (the back of your computer). Plugging the cable into USB switches, extenders or external ports, does not allow the phone to enter download mode correctly.

I can confirm, although i found this out a whilllllle ago, just didnt think much of it lol
Just so you know. I found that in some cases certain USB cables just will not work with some devices. This has to do with the quality of the cable. I would avoid overly thin or flat cables because they tend to be cheaply made and won't be able to provide a stable power flow. The shorter the cable the better.

I can recreate this over and over again. The reason I put this here and not in general is because I, like many others, have struggled over and over with odin, and people had the attitude of "it works every time, you're just doing something wrong." The reality is that you're trying to prove that I'm just "doing something wrong" because all your cables work. I can recreate this over and over again. What do you want me to do, make a video of it in order for you to believe that there is an actual issue?
I think it's important for people to see this when trying all the roms and mods that are in the development section. In fact, I think it would be REALLY helpful if designgears would add this to the "how to get to download mode" section on the Odin thread. I can't tell you the amount of hours I have spent trying to get into download mode. It is incredibly frustrating to do everything right, and have others telling you that you are not doing it right.
I searched google endlessly looking for a solution to get into download mode, and no where did I see this as a possible solution. Also, as an FYI, when I plug in the other cable, it just goes straight to the battery screen no matter what I press. I can hold down the power and volume buttons to go into recovery mode, but it's impossible to get to download mode.
I have plugged mine into a usb port in the front of my computer as well as in my monitor. I have never had a problem with download mode or anything else.

While this is good to know...It is quite possible you got a faulty second cable, and some of the cables that do come in the box are faulty as well..
It's always a good reminder to try changing out cables if your having an issues. Same for downloading different things that work for a-lot of people and not for you/me..same too for hooking into the back of the computer and bypassing the external hub....Sometimes you get lucky and find the problem right away..sometimes you don't....It's called a process of elimination...
FWIW..I've never trusted cheap ass cables..in anything. Never have..Never will..but..JSYK..expensive cables go bad from time to time too
Thanks for the reminder

The thing that throws me off is that this cable works for EVERYTHING else. Data transfer, media syncing, recovery mode, charging, etc... There was never anything that would indicate any issue with the cable. I just want to make sure everyone knows this, because when I was struggling to get into download mode, I didn't see anyone suggest that it could be the cable, even though the cable worked for everything else.
OP - thanks for posting this! It is at least another thing to keep in mind when troubleshooting. I was actually considering getting another cable to keep at work.....
P.S. would we get in trouble for quoting Michael Scott's favorite joke in response to post #6? Yea, I know. Little too obvious right. I'll restrain. Already made myself chuckle anyways

Um.. not true - Although I did use the stock USB Cable - I was flashing the night away (trying to recover my bricked phone) on my Win7 box using a USB hub that had a few other devices hooked into it.
Never had an issue getting to D/L mode.. and it found the phone again and again and again and again.... (go on for infinity).
I think it has more to do with the hardware your connecting it to and how the USB drivers loaded (i.e. XP=****e) and what type of OS your running more than anything. I had terrible luck with my work's XP rig... but my Win7 x64 rig found the device while in d/l mode - found the drivers?!?! and I was good to go.
Although - it is always a good rule of thumb IF you can't get the device to recognize on your computer to use the original cable and hook to the best source of power for your USB which is the back of your computer.
So.. this isn't a [FIX] - just a good tip. If you can't get into D/L mode by holding the volume button and jamming in the USB or using ADB -> Reboot Download command.. your pretty much fux0red.
I need original USB cable
I just wanted to throw in my $0.02 I needed to use the original USB cable and a port directly on my motherboard. The usb cable I bought from newegg does not work with my MSI X58 motherboard and my capitavate. The original cable does not work if I use a front usb port on my Antec P183 case. Strangly an identical usb cable from newegg that I ordered at the same time does work with my work computer, Dell X38 motherboard.
Ive had the same problem... only way i get it to download mode is via Terminal:
su
reboot download
I really cant get it to work no other way :s

I appreciate all your hard work on everything. I read through that post and tried to search it several times... Believe me, I spent hours pouring through the pages looking for something that would work.
No where did I see anyone say to make sure you were using the stock cable because other cables might not work? Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong...there are a lot of pages after all.
Furthermore...I'm sorry to be new to Android and to flashing roms, but we are all new at some point. No one is born an expert.
edit: I'm guessing you misunderstood the post? I wasn't posting about the method...just about the fact that many usb cables, including the micro usb cable that ATT sells, do not work for getting to download mode. If I'm wrong about what you were posting, feel free to correct me. If i'm correct, your post is quite ironic
The first captivate I had WOULD NOT GO INTO DOWNLOAD mode regardless of cable or usb port. I tried every port and every cable including the stock one that came with the phone.
The replacement captivate ALWAYS goes into download mode regardless of cable or port.
It's a tip and thank you for the. But if your phone is one of those that does not have 3 button recovery then it will likely not work with the 2 button download trick either.

Stuck in bootloader --> Volume down is broken/stuck

Edit: Im stuck in bootloader with the only option to press power on is fastboot. and from there i cannot select any options because the navigation is broken. Im looking to restore it to factory so i can take it to the sprint store to have replaced. Please help me! Most likely an autorun from fastboot or a computer pushed through usb command promt that i can take over the phone. PLease HELP!
Have you tried the ruu? Its an executive file that you run from your computer and it restores your phone to stock. I've never had to run it so I cant tell you the exact details of how it works, but that could do the trick. I think there is a way also via using fastboot commands, but someone more intelligent then I will have to provide you with links. Also have you tried putting unrevoked forever s-on on your sd card and naming it PC36100.img then butting into hboot and letting it scan for that? Once it finds it, it should flash it on its own, then once youve done that, you can pull your sdcard again, delete that PC36100.img and put the PC36100.img that returns you to stock on your sdcard then boot into hboot again. It should find that image then flash you back to stock.
Ill try that. My down button is definatly either stuck, disconnected or something. When i press the up button and power it will Vibrate 5 times.
Ok i got the zip to load but my down and up buttons do nothing. is there a way i can have recovery auto run? or edit the hboot so that it automatically runs the recover.img?
Update: It's stuck in bootloader i guess... I restart and the volume down is stuck im pretty sure so it always goes to that. I have it hooked up to my computer, can i push commands through usb to it in bootloader menu...
Fastboot

Sim-lock
etc.
my only working option is to click power and have the fastboot initiate and then give me an option [1] ........ that i am unable to highlight or get to because of the stuck down button.

Load up nandroid?? im so out of the whole evo scene. can i have a link or procedure.... sorry for being a big noob.
If I can remember, running the stock ruu exe will do everything for you without any need for you to do anything with the phone to help it. Just make sure you have the htc sync program installed. Next make sure the phone is on and running (not in hboot or recovery). Plug the phone into the computer with the data cable. Make sure it's only in charge mode. Run the ruu exe. Be patient because it might take some time to start up. Make sure you have nothing running in the background on the pc. No antivirus or anything and I do mean anything. Don't touch or move the phone or cable while the ruu is running or you might risk bricking the phone if the connection between the phone and pc is interrupted. Don't let the computer go to sleep or standby. Make sure your phone's battery has a full charge. The ruu will make the phone reboot into upload mode. Then it will upload all the stuff the phone needs to be put back to factory. It might reboot the phone a few times. This is normal. You don't have to worry about the broken volume buttons interfering with ruu.
Lastly, make sure you remove your sd card before you get to the store to let the tech check it out. Don't offer any additional information. Just tell them the volume buttons stopped working and you did a full factory reset before you got there.
After running the ruu, don't sign into google account so your personal information won't be on the phone and none of the programs you bought will show up in the market. You should have a backup old phone with you so you or they can activate it for you in case they want to keep or swap it out. If they give you a refurb, power it up and test it at the counter to your satisfaction BEFORE you leave the counter and store. I noticed something wrong with the refurb they gave me and I'm glad I didn't walk away. The tech fixed the problem with the refurb (uneven backlighting on the screen). I was able to use my old screen with the refurb's guts and my screen didn't have any flaws in it.
You do what you want but this is my suggestion based on my experience with exchanging a defective phone. I have full insurance and or tep so it was a hassle free experience.

I already have a pre activated but i cannot get the phone to start without going into the Power+Down Menu... Can i run RUU from that? im not able to get it running on Android
I don't know. Something worse could happen but there's also a chance it might work. I am guessing ruu would tell it to reboot into upload mode. If the phone couldn't get into that mode the ruu might stop. This is just speculation. If you knew that the tech wouldn't bust you for having root, then I'd say to just take it in. It's a big risk in my opinion.
I don't know if there is a img file to fastboot flash a stock recovery. I don't know if that would help. Need to figure out a way to get the s-on and push stock back into it, or at the very least get s-on in hboot.
I'm thinking that because if the button is broke, and you can't get the phone past the hboot screen, then maybe the tech might not want to waste anymore time on it and just order a replacement. The hboot screen would be the only thing he could get into. I don't know but I think it could be helpful, maybe, if adb or something else could push an original rom into it at the screen it's stuck in. I think if you tried, if it wasn't working, the phone and adb wouldn't be communicating like normal and adb would not continue. I am guessing pushing a stock recovery wouldn't turn s-on. It would be great if it did.
I would say that talking with one of the devs that has got their hands dirty in hboot and fastboot, might give better advice. Perhaps they know of a way to force things into the phone that the general public wouldn't normally need to know or do. I am no expert. I suggest talking to people that developed in those areas. Didn't toast work with that?
I don't know what else to suggest. I'm running out of ideas.
I just had another idea. What if you could get a pc36img.zip, or whatever it's called, into root of the card and the phone will want to flash it. Only snag I can think of is I think hboot will ask if you want to flash or update or whatever it's called. That might be the down button. Maybe someone could run with that idea?
I would say read the rooting articles and see if you can adapt what they are saying to push stock everything back in instead of trying to root.
Even if you can't get the updated rom to install, if it can be pushed into the phone and the phone is made to boot like normal, the phone "should" try to apply it if anyone can get it to boot normally. I'm thinking that's another way to cover your ass.
If all else fails, then I would suggest to say a little prayer before going to the store and hope for a tech that isn't going to be a **** about it. Don't get an attitude towards the employees because that could make things much more difficult for you. A seasoned dev or a tech might be the only people that could help. Going into the irc channel for the evo and hanging around in there might get you hooked up with someone that could help more than the people that hang in the forums. I don't see serious devs hanging around the forum and bullshitting with the people there. Go where they might be, in irc. Be cool with them, don't be aggressive or flaky. If you are nice/cool with them, they might take the time away from what they are working on to help you.

thanks! were can i go to find this irc? ive gotten a recovery image on the evo's root micro sd in a pc3600 or w.e zip and gotten it to ask me if id like to run it but it wont go any further than that because i cant chose the option. I have a bit of nail glue and im thinking about trying to glue a hair pin to the down button and giving it a pull while i try and run or maybe i can break the button and say oh well... and then from there do it. I dont have any hex or w.e screw driver that are small enough to open the case and do the option described in page one of this forum. Thank you everyone for the help! and keep the ideas coming. I refuse to let this turn out bad, worst comes to worst ill replicate water damage or something and fry the damn thing. then bring it in as a brick.
Any guru's have a quick idea because i want to do this swap.. im so sick of the palm pre. Its like a baby compared to android.
The irc info should be on one of the stickies at the top of the forum. Shouldn't it say something like join us at #evo or something like that.
This is where you can be opening a can of worms, so you've been warned. You can go to sears I think and the tool section and I think they might sell those wierd screwdrivers. I found one that worked for my macbook's harddrive brackets. It's long, has a black handle and generally different colored caps on top of the handle. I kinda doubt radio shack would have it but you could try. Oh, and get a guitar pick to use a the tool to separate the two halves of the phone. I wouldn't use anything else or it might f up the plastic and be obvious you was inside. Maybe look for an evo teardown video somewhere to show you what to expect. Don't force anything!

Install the SDK - boot it up and use ADB
specifically adb pull is what you are looking for. The default directory for photos should be /sdcard/DCIM/Camera.
So:
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/DCIM/Camera/* .
will pull all photos and videos (all files really) from that directory and place them in your current working folder.
If you want to pull any other files you can use adb shell to open up an interactive shell and navigate the file system (then adb pull to grab any files using the full path).
pics of shattered screen pl0x?
ill take some tonight. Where can i get this SDK? I may need some more assistance on this.

http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
It's actually quite easy.
Download and extract/install the SDK.
Install the USB Driver: http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
Connect your phone via USB
Open up a terminal windows / command prompt
If you haven't added the SDK to your path navigate to the platform-tools folder.
adb devices will list all connected devices (you should see your device here - if you see one it's yours).
adb shell will get you an interactive shell (standard unix shell commands work, ls, cd, cp, mv, rm, etc...)
adb pull allows you to pull files using the full path to the file (wildcards accepted).
After you install adb, you also need to install a platform (e.g. 2.3) to get adb.
Please tell me you had usb debugging enabled when it broke.
Are you, by any chance, rooted and using ClockworkMod Recovery?
Nothing on this phone is rooted. This is actually my mothers phone and she wants to get the pictures off. This is going to be a painful process i can already 4 SEE IT! this is why every phone should have SD card
Ok, I'll give it a whirl.
I'm going to make a few assumptions here:
- The display is completely black.
- The phone is charged.
- You have whatever drivers are needed to mount usb storage.
First off, forget about adb. I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say she probably never enabled usb debugging, so adb won't work. Also, make sure you're using the usb cable that came with the phone. The nexus s uses usb 2.0, and some things don't work right using a usb 1.1 cable. Fyi, I think the default screen timeout is 15 seconds. If it sits idle for longer than than, reconnecting the usb plug to the computer will turn it back on with the screen unlocked.
1. //Make sure the phone is on.
Yank the battery, and put it back in. (Use the slot on the top edge to pop the cover off.)
Hold the power button down a couple seconds till it vibrates.
Give it 2 or 3 minutes to make sure it's fully booted.
2. //Make sure the sound is on (& works)
Plug the phone into the computer (or disconnect & reconnect).
Press Volume Up for a second, then tap it again. If it beeps, the sound is on & the screen is unlocked.
3. //Check if the capacitive buttons work.
Say a quick prayer to St. Jude, the patron saint of hopeless cases.
Hold down the search button for a couple seconds to activate voice search.
Say something simple, like "Hello."
After a couple seconds, it should beep & vib.
If that worked, hopefully the touch input on the screen will work.
4. //Mount the sd storage
Mark the locations of the "mount usb storage" and "ok" buttons. The mount button is 1 1/16" above the seam at the bottom edge of the glass, or 1 3/16" above the usb port, centered horizontally. The ok button is 11/16" from the left seam and 1 11/16" above the bottom seam.
Unplug and reconnect the usb cable.
Pick the phone up to make sure it's in portrait mode.
Press the mount button.
Press the ok button.
5. Make yer mama proud.
Good luck

LMAO @ the end. I dont think the capacitive buttons work as i didnt feel the phone vibrate as i touched them but ill give this whole setup a try. the voice search im guessing will confirm if the buttons are working or not. Also if they are not working i am pretty much screwed right?
Also another thing which sucks is that Asurion the insurance with t-mobile does not have this phone and they are offering me the vibrant in replacement.
What i haven't tried to do is see what bestbuy would do for me.

WTF I'm cancelling my insurance right now!!!
I agree that it was a stupid move to not use sd cards. There would have been a very good chance that everything on a physical card would have been okay.
Then you also have the situation like that happened in miami. A guy starts video recording a police scene. Cop sees him doing it and demands at gunpoint the guy give him his phone. The cop smashes and stomps the phone then gives it back to him. The guy removes the sd card and puts it in his mouth so the cops won't find it. Long story.
I think the sd card slot should be on the outside of phones so that would be for easy and quick removal if need be. Taking a phone out of a case then remove the back cover then remove the battery then unlock the card then remove it is too much **** to do.
Even if it had to be under the back cover, don't put it under the battery. Put it in a spring loaded locking slot like on other phones. I also hated the HTC locking bar mechanism for cards too.
A vibrant?! I don't know T-Mobile phones well enough to know if that phone is good or not. Knowing insurance companies, if you totalled your vette and had full coverage, they'd try and pass off an aveo on you (to save them a **** load of money on a claim).
If you had insurance, couldn't you try and see if best buy would help you? If they won't give you another phone then maybe they could help you with the insurance company to make them give you a same model replacement. If you really want to be a **** about it, you could in to consumerist.com and share your story. Hopefully the bad press would encourage the insurance company to give you a new nexus just to make the bad publicity go away. It would be cheaper and easier to give you a new one than to get bad press.
I called best buy, i called t-mobile and back to asurion, nothing but the good ol run around. I even asked t-mobile if they can make me eligible for an upgrade again since i didnt want the vibrant. I explained to them why i didnt want it, stock android vs touch wiz. So i think im just going to end up buying a new phone. try to extract the photos and maybe send it in for the insurance and sell the vibrant.
It's easier to give someone the shuffle off when on the phone. It isn't as easy in person. Isn't there authorized repair centers that work with t-mobile? They would take one look at it and ask if I had insurance and then order me another one. Then they'd take the old phone and send it back. You sign a paper or two, maybe might have to pay a deductible. I know with sprint, I've never got the run around with a repair center.

I asked best buy that, they asked if i had their insurance plan, which i didnt, which i guess now i wish i should have gotten. I asked them if i give you the phone and pay whatever deductible you want will you be able to do it for me? they kept telling me no.
How long ago did you buy the Nexus from Best Buy? If it was within 30 days you might just try calling them and trying to add the Black Tie (or whatever it's called) replacement plan. I think they just need the IMEI, but I have never used their service.
No need to mention that the phone is borked. And to all of your moralists out there, I'm not telling him to defraud anyone- I'm pretty sure BB gives you 30 days (might be less) from your purchase date to add on that extra warranty.

The buttons might not vibrate if she turned haptic feedback off or if the screen is locked. (Plugging it into a computer will unlock the screen.) Yes, if you get a beep & quick vib from voice search, that means the touch buttons work, so hopefully the rest of the touchscreen will work.
Oh, and all this is assuming that the phone powers on, and that she didn't have a password on the phone. Step 2 should confirm this.

You're not totally screwed, but you will have to move on to a hardware hack.
If you get another Nexus S, take the motherboard out of the old one and put it in the new one. Assuming the internals are ok, you can copy everything off of the sdcard, then swap the motherboard back into the old one & get the insurance replacement. (You can probably also get most of the data off the phone storage, but it's a bit tedious without root. Let me know if you want help with that.) Taking the phone apart is actually not as hard as it might sound. There's a pretty good guide at http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus-S-Teardown/4365/1 . Stop after step 6, and skip the NFC part of step 3. All you need is a small phillips screwdriver and a little patience. (An anti-static wrist strap is never a bad idea.) The hardest part is probably just unplugging the connectors.
Oh, and make sure you find out how long you have to file the insurance claim after the incident. As someone who has spent many hours inside a cell phone claims center --- well, lets just say I don't buy the insurance anymore. Oh, and arcarsenal, we defined fraud as "misrepresenting a material fact (such as the date of an incident) to gain something of value." Just sayin.

SM-G900V - Broken screen. MHL/Mouse/Keyboard(?) possible all at once? [SOLVED]

Phone fell out of my pocket and got run over. Screen is completely black and the digitizer is done as well. If I connect it to my PC, it comes right up, but I have no way to enable USB file transfer mode so I can't "see" the SD card or internal memory. I tried to use [email protected] with Android Control, but it appears USB Debugging is turned off on the phone as ADB tells me the device is "unauthorized" and [email protected] gives me a "Rejected" status when it connects with the phone. (Yes, I did remove the ADB keys from my PC's ./user/.android folder and tried again)
Recovery is stock so no ADB access to open a shell and tweak anything. I haven't run across an ADB enabled recovery that I can install on this unlocked bootloader. (I can get into download mode and Odin recognizes the phone.) so I thought I'd try the "simple" route.
I bought an MHL adapter and an OTG cable thinking I could use a spare monitor and a mouse to turn on USB debugging or, at a minimum, turn on USB file transfer so I can get my data off the phone. I connected everything up and I can see the display, but mouse movement isn't being passed through the MHL cable assembly. If I plug the OTG cable directly into the phone, the phone does react to mouse movement and clicks and I can get lucky and launch apps, but I can't see WTH I'm doing. The odds of me turning on USB debugging like this are slim.
Anyone know of an MHL adapter that will allow "piggybacking" a USB mouse or an ADB enabled recovery I can flash to the phone? Maybe some uber-secret method to turn on USB debugging without access via ADB?

Yep, have all this working. Replacement phone works so my config is correct. The issue is USB debugging got turned off somehow. If I can get in via ADB, I can tweak the files I need to turn it back on. Or, I can find a MHL/OTG combo that works and just turn it on via the screen. Hell, if I could view the ADB key on the phone, I'd modify that file on my PC and it'd probably work.

Read this one as well. I'm not sure what all gets nuked in the process nor have I researched ADB enabled ROMs. I have 2 files I *need* to get off the phone before I send it back. If I had local copies, I wouldn't sweat it and I'd boot into recovery and since I'm familiar with the order of the menus in there, I can probably do a factory restore. Unfortunately, the 2 files I need were updated/created while I was doing the errands that resulted in the broken screen.

Yeah, I've seen a bunch of those, but have read several reviews that state it does not work with the S5. I wish I could find one locally just to try it out and if it doesn't work, I can return it without too much hassle.
Just spent almost an hour on the phone with Verizon and Samsung. The 2nd tier person at Verizon said that if the phone was still activated, they *might* be able to get in remotely and tweak the USB Debugging setting for me. I would have to acknowledge the request on the screen, but that may have been doable via blind mouse clicks after seeing where the dialogue was located on the display. Unfortunately, the phone was already deactivated and without a working digitizer, I would not have been able to temporarily reactivate it.
Samsung was slightly better than useless. I had to explain several times, to two different people, the specifics of my situation and they couldn't seem to grasp the idea that both the display and the digitizer were dead and all I was looking for was a way to get MHL and OTG working at the same time. That concept seemed completely foreign to them and they couldn't tell me if the dock they manufactured for the S5 would do what I wanted. The capper was the last person I spoke to all of a sudden said, "Thank you. Have a nice day." and hung up while I was asking a question.
I called Asurion again to see if I could send the replacement phone back (Because the sound quality is so bad it's almost useless. Even the Samsung Advanced Support guy said the quality on his end was crappy.) and just get this screen replaced. They told me "That service is not available in your area (I'm in a city of approximately 1.3 million - surely they'd have a vendor here?) and "we don't replace the digitizer, only the glass." When I asked, "How is that possible when the glass, the LCD and the digitizer are all one unit (At least I've not seen the separate components in my searches) that you can replace the glass?" The response was a seemingly scripted, "We don't replace the digitizer." When I asked if I could just send this replacement back and replace the screen myself, they said the phone would no longer be insured. Same as if I had a "professional" swap it out.
At this point, it appears I'm dead in the water. I'm still going to research the feasibility of cobbling my own cable(s) together before I have to return this phone. This seems so simple to solve, but it's proving to be an exercise in frustration.
Having a little success in "driving" the phone now with the use of an MHL adapter and some swapping of MHL and OTG cables and a keyboard. I've verified USB debugging *IS* enabled, turned it off, revoked previous privs, turned developer options off, rebooted the phone, turned developer options and USB debugging back on.
I installed the Samsung USB drivers on my notebook and installed Android Control and [email protected] and tried again. Still getting an unauthorized response from ADB with a request to check the screen for messages. Unfortunately, as soon as I unplug the USB cable from the phone to plug in the MHL adapter, any message that may have been there disappears. I did this same thing on my replacement phone and after a couple tries, I got the Authorization message and was able to get that one "talking" again.
At some point I had installed a screen mirroring app on the old phone and managed to get WiFi working with some blind mouse clicks and got the mirroring working with a keyboard plugged in. It's VERY slow, but I was able to turn on BlueTooth as well. I ran out of time for the trial version of the mirroring app and can't seem to make it work again so....
I'm off to buy a BT keyboard and mouse. The plan is to try and sideload Samsung Smart Switch, use the BT KB/Mouse to "drive" and the MHL adapter to "see" and transfer data that way. Alternately, if I can get the screen mirroring working with BT KB for control, I could, in theory, reauthorize the USB stuff.
Alternately, what's the trick to making ADB work via TCPIP? I've been reading a few threads about it and actually got a brief response (Still unauthorized) early this morning (0230-ish) but have been unable to repeat that. Trying with my new phone ADB tells me it can't "see" any devices and "unable to connect to :5555"
Found a thread on Stack Overflow that mentions adbd insecure needing to be disabled, but I have no idea where that might be done.

And here is a chicken and egg. For you need USB debugging activated in order to provide you with an ADB shell. At least as I understand it.
Smart Switch is already installed, but I can't access the confirmation dialogue(s). If I can get the thing talking to the PC, I'm golden. I can pull my data and then do a factory reset.

That's strange. I managed to get it working on my Core Prime with a dead screen. Well broken enough. With no OTG support. And I wasn't aware of any dialogue on screen. I loaded up Switch in Windows and it communicated with Switch on the mobile fine AFAICT.
I can the phone recognized by ODIN and wouldn't mind attempting to flash something if it'll help. At this point, I'm considering this pretty much a lost cause so if something gets jacked, I don't care.

If your phone has a supported custom recovery then you have a chance.
Was able to recover an ADB key file pair from Saturday afternoon's initial attempt to get in to the phone. Still no joy. However! I *was* able to drive through the settings menus with a keyboard. USB debugging IS on and I was able to revoke USB debugging Authorizations

This started off well but if your phone had a list of keys already, even if you didn't know it is, then revoking the keys pulls rug from under your feet. So to speak. However, if you can satisfy the dialogue to authorise a new computer, then that's no problem and your in!
Am I on the right track with revoking authorizations? Any way to make the phone think I've never "touched" it with ADB? Again, the new phone connected right up with no input required from me.

I wouldn't have done that given it freshens the slate. But if you wanted to clear it to a near untouched state that is the way to do it. Strange the new phone was easy that way. In that case it would be a good idea to clear it if the old one acts the same.
Here is my story about trying to get USB debugging working:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...how-recover-data-core-prime-sm-g360g-t3681433
Here is a guide I wrote from my story detailing how I hacked my adb key in to authorise my computer for USB debugging:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/guide-modfying-cf-autoroot-kit-to-t3725596
Now this details what's involved but my phone was fully unsupported by everything but the CFAR kit. Which I needed to hack. You shouldn't need to go to such measures. Just need a recovery with ADB enabled.

USB debugging *is* on. I was able to verify that once I figured out how to drive "blind" with a keyboard. I was able to turn it off, turn off debugging options, reboot, turn debugging options back on, then turn on USB debugging.

I'll have to try again but when I used Switch to move my wife's data from her Droid Mini to an S5, there was a confirmation dialogue on the Mini.

G900V. Locked bootloader (Thanks Verizon) and I haven't found a custom recovery I can install without rooting.

I was getting the "unauthorized" status of the device via ADB and had no way to compare keys. I revoked keys so I had a known starting point. Yes, if I can get to the dialogue to confirm the access, I'm golden. Going to try the BT keyboard/Mouse and screen mirroring this evening when I'm done for the day. Even if I get Switch to start talking and get my data moved over, I'm going to figure out the ADB thing - it's become personal.

Then you're half way there. Almost living on a prayer. And if you can do the above it should be a cinch to get over the line and get that computer authorised.

It may work different from a non-Samsung phone. I used Switch on Windows to back up data from my Samsung phone. It was able to do so without intervention on the phone. Well I didn't see any prompt on the phone. Since my screen was blank.

Aha. Well hopefully you can get it going without need of that. In my case my under supported phone wasn't locked.

Haha. Yes I know what you mean. You can see by the links I posted how personal I got.
I managed to CF-AutoRoot my phone before I got USB debugging even close to on. Of course I still couldn't do much with a broken rooted phone since all actions needed acknowledgement on screen. Later when I finally broke in and got the authorisation I still didn't have root access from an adb shell since that needed the screen working.
I had AirDroid installed. So once USB debugging was working I could do screen mirroring right away. That was a reward in itself. But it was the darnedest thing. The time I got it up and working suddenly the screen started responding to touch which didn't work before. I could brush my finger across the screen and hear the waters. So I quickly backed up my data. The next day, the screen stopped detecting my touch again. As well as AirDroid being unable control input. It's stuck in the corner and I can't use the mirroring to echo any touch to the phone. Most bizarre! I backuped my data just in time.
I used Helium to do a non root backup even though it was rooted. Worked well. Needed the mirror to see on screen.
I'm in! I was able to use my MHL adapter and a mouse via OTG to get the trial version of Stream Screen Mirror going. Once I got that going, I was able to pair a BT mouse/keyboard and use an MHL adapter to "see". Out of "spite", I fired up Android Control and authorized ADB access and voila! Remote screen and control. Pretty slow, but it works.
Sideloaded Switch via SMB and got it transferring data. It's grinding along now but will likely be another hour or so.
Thanks to everyone for the help.
That's good you got it going. Well done, I knew you would get there. Now if only there was a better solution than all this fiddling around.

No kidding... I can't imagine someone without any technical knowledge being able to move their data over in this type of situation. Oh well, it was a nice learning experience. I got a BT keyboard and Mouse for use with my Rapsberry Pi and now have a solution for the next time.
Actually, I think I'm going to root this thing and avoid all the hassle in case this happens again.
I agree with you there!

Difficulties w/ BLU C5L

I realize the BLU C5L is a very inexpensive (meaning cheap) phone and I'm not expecting some 'miracle cure to make it the latest, greatest phone ever". I'm having a number of issues w/ this phone and feel that re-flashing may/should be the answer(?) Right now ,#1. I can't even get WIN 10 to recognize the phone so that I could flash it. #2. read that phone needed to be rooted before flashing and I've tried 3 different programs and all get to 78 -83% and quit saying phone can't be rooted.(???) I've made sure I have USB debugging, 3rd party apps checked, and MTP checked. Oh, that's another thing, MTP will NOT stay on...upon sleep, shutdown or comp to phone disconnect, it always reverts to PTP. C'mon, is Android 8.1 GO that difficult? Sure would appreciate some "know-how" concerning this phone. THANX
Addendum: Just tried KingRoot (again) and it and said " too many phones connected select only one device" Yea, well...had only one???? got that solved and next: "KingRoot says failed to obtain root permission" C'mon...it can't be that difficult on such a cheap phone??? ANYONE....what the hell is going on? Hope to hear from someone who knows about this phone and what I need to do to get it rooted/re-flashed. THANX
RICK
