Your motorola most likely creates an ad hoc network. The A500 cant use that. I had the exact same problem with my iPhone. There is a workaround, but I understand you need to root your A500. I am not at that point of comfort yet with my A500

Then you are probably using an iPhone 4. I have a iPhone 3GS that only supports ad hoc mode. The iphone 4 supports infrastructure (i think thats what it is called) mode. Infrastrucutre mode is supported by the A500.
I think Rooting does void warranty.

If you put back orig. wpa_supplicant file (remember to back up changed system apps and files), then who would know?
I don't think you can void the warrenty by rooting your device, as long as you are able to restore the original files...
So I wouldn't worry about it

I believe technically you void the warranty when you root BUT it's somewhat difficult to prove if you replace the stock apps and unroot. Not like you can un-void your warranty (be kind of like replacing the engine on your car to race it, then replacing it with the original engine before bringing it in for warranty work on the electronics...)
Be sure to remove any Root-only apps installed before returning for warranty work though Best bet is to do a factory reset immediately before bringing it back.

I just took the plunge in to sd android on my TMOUSA HTC HD2.
I am using AmeriCanAndroid all stock HD2.
Previously I was able to tether to a vista laptop with wm6.5 fine. I am trying to use the wifi tether on the the android side now.
My goal is to tether to a unrooted Acer A500 Iconia. I am not sure if it is possible. I have read a ton and can't seem to find a clear answer to this problem. Several people talk about rooting the A500 so it can see a ad-hoc wifi tether. Unless I misunderstood I also read that a rooted android phone could be a infrastructure wifi hotspot not just an ad-hoc connection. I am not sure if I am mistaken or not. If someone could clear this up it would be great.
Thanks for any ideas.

True. I have a Nokia N900 which I use to tether my A500 with so I can get on Internet even on the go, but the N900 can only do ad-hoc wifi. I had to root my tablet and then proceed to replace the original wpa_supplicant in /system/bin with another one before ad-hoc wifi worked. You cannot get it to work without rooting and replacing the aforementioned file.

There's apparently plenty of ways of getting an Android phone to serve Internet to the tablet, Pdanet and various wifi hotspot thingies, but I can't comment on those as I don't own an Android phone myself, only the tablet.
It seems I've accidentally discovered my Dell Streak does Infrastructure mode, then. I had no idea the Iconia couldn't handle Ad-Hoc mode by default.
Why wouldn't it be able to handle it? If the hardware is capable, why isn't the feature implemented?!

I'd say the reason is simple: stupidity, or greed.
If you guys need it here's how I allowed tethering on my A500:
* Copy the wpa_supplicant from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033314 to external SD card root
* Root the tablet ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13292713&postcount=82 )
* Turn flight mode on
* Install Terminal Emulator Pro and become root
* 'mount -o remount,rw /system'
* 'cd /system/bin'
* 'mv wpa_supplicant wpa_supplicant.old'
* 'cat /mnt/external_sd/wpa_supplicant wpa_supplicant'
* Close all apps and turn the tablet off and back on
* Turn flight mode off
I dunno if I'm doing it the "right(TM)" way, but this way worked just peachy and I like to keep a backup of the original binary just in case.
You guys lost me with this stuff. When I think tethering, isn't that a wired connection between your phone and tablet, using the phones 3 or 4g to connect to the internet? I have a mid level phone...motorola defy...its got android 2.2, and I just use wifi hotspot. I instantly have a wifi signal on my a500. I thought all phones with 2.2 were supposed to be able to hotspot, but i'm probably lost on this one

Thanks for the explanation and help on this. I was hoping to not root the tablet. Did you have trouble using regular wifi after you made the changes? I have read a thread that people couldn't us the wifi signal from there home router just the tethered phone.
I use my wireless router and hotspots but just want the ability use it when I am out.
Thanks again.

It's best to learn yourself, because that way you know what happens to your phone.
I no longer root other people's phone or mod it in any way. There is always that .00001% chance the phone would brick. I would feel horrible if I broke somebody's phone.
Not to be mean either but people come back to me for "Tech support" Blaming me that there phone isn't working properly because I "Rooted it" for them.
Also.. it's really easy to do. I mean all you have to do is:
-Get samsung drivers
-Put phone in USB Diagnostic Mode
-Run the Noobnl one click root.
Your done.
Like Pjames said.. Believe in yourself and have confidence.
Bomix is right. And its SUPER easy. If you have windows 7 you might have a smig harder time. I had to run the program 7 times to get it to finally connect and do it. But that just required double clicking it to try again. Also restaring the phone and then running the program when you see the sprint logo worked for me. But anyways, you really can't get easier than this, when I had to root my nexus one it took me forever with all the software, and dos cmd commands.

Yes, but a much, much better solution is here. Infrastructure mode, and nicely integrated into the Wireless & Networks section of the Settings app. I've installed and tested it on the MixUp kernel, and it works like a champ.

So once rooted, you don't need a special setting/program to tether, you can just use tethering programs and assume it is free?
In WM there's always the settings/program that I was paranoid about having wrong.
No... you don't use the Sprint hotspot app. This mod integrates a wireless Access Point feature/capability directly into the phone.
After installation, a new item appears in menu->settings->Wireless & networks -- "Mobile AP".
Select it, and turn it on with the checkbox. Wait while it configures everything in about a minute, then look for it with any wireless device and connect same as any AP. The device will now have internet access via your Epic.
This solution beats any other simply on account of the Infrastruture Mode implementation; however, the tight integration directly into the Android system beats the app approach too, for my tastes.
The SSID, DHCP server address range, and other wifi router/AP parameters are configurable.

just keep in mind this mod only works on stock/odexed ROMs, which if all you are doing is rooting, you have. if that is too much then you can get wifi tether but i think the market version still doesnt work on the Epic (correct me if thats changed).
the working version is here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
but you have to go to settings > applications > check unknown sources to install a file downloaded from non-market source.

As others have stated, you really should do it yourself and learn. Unless of course you dont ever plan on getting another phone that you plan to root. Most of the guides on XDA offer wasy instructions and have (some) members that will be patient and offer you assistance if you need it.
It really isnt that difficult with the guides and instructions some have posted. Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067. My 12 year old nephew followed that post, and with minimal questions rooted his phone on his own without any issues.

If your phone is a bit older, it will most likely not support infratructure tethering and since the default Iconia can't see adhoc wifi, you will need to root and change the wpasupplicant file. I did that and now I can tehpther my old droid Eris to my iconia.

Don't know why half of my post was missing but.
I was meaning to say that i do have it working with my X10 mini but, i just want to replace it because i feel cheated by the fact that SE have already discontinued the X10 mini (almost as it was released).
But yeah, Barnacle and a ad-hoc fix works great!
Explain to me what you want to do and I can possibly try it. I have both the Bell Atrix and the Iconia.
I am currently tethering the two when I need to with no issues.
I just bumped up my data plan to 6GB for the occasion!
If your phone plan doesn't support tethering you can do the wpa_supplicant fix and use an app like Barnacle to share your phone's wifi ad-hoc to your tablet.
Still uses data, but your carrier doesn't know the difference between phone data and tablet data at that point.

Finally works the way I expected it to when I bought it two months ago.
I've got a Windows phone that only shares internet through USB and Wifi. So ad hoc was important to me.
Also, I've been in situations in the past where we had one aircard, and shared internet with multiple users with ad hoc on a laptop. We'd show up to an event, find out the internet was charged at convention center rates (in one place $1100 a day), and immediately set up a private ad hoc network to hold our online, realtime text panel.
Other than having to pay a couple of days of hotel rate internet in the room, I didn't miss anything in the interim between purchase and now.
But man am I glad to have it now. Thanks ASUS!
This was the only reason I was thinking of rooting my transformer

change the SSID from Barnacle to anything else.
Change the channel to 6 or less
put a check in the ignore wpa supplicant line (or whatever it is)

Where to begin...CWM recovery, Titanium Backup, faasssttt Tiamat overclocked kernels and super-functional ROMs, smooth buttery scrolling, customize to your heart's content, total control over your device, write to external sdcard, usb host mode, use of thumb drives and HDDs, ad hoc tethering, theming...Tiamat Controls (also Rogue goodness, your choice)...
I rooted so I can access my school's VPN, have better controls over the hardware, increase my speed, writing to my SD card, and making it more viable as a replacement for my laptop. Seriously, when you root, you unlock functionality that you wish you will never be without.
So when ics roms start dropping, that su will be needed.

I had to root my g-tablet in order to install Android Market. I really haven't found a great need to root the Xoom.
I rooted when I first got the zoom back in April but then unrooted for the ota's but now it seems ice will come via cyanogen before moto pushes it out so I re-rooted. The zoom is faster on tiamat kernal and I like having full control of my device.
I bought a 3G xoom on eBay - sent it off and got it converted to LTE 4G but I only use only wifi.

But most likely you'll get a virus on your phone and then come here crying about it.. then we'll have to kill you.

Lol, That made me laugh out loud. Thanks xD
Ok I've been looking around the market and I just can't seem to find a wireless wifi tethering app that my acer will see that is compatable with a LG Vortex. I have tried the opengarden app that has worked for everything else, barnicle tether and 2 or 3 others that I can't remember. Help is nice.
What do u need a thethring app for wifi on the tablet? Turn on the wifi hotspot on the lg and then connect the iconia to it.

He is running it on the LG but the Acer can't find it to connect to it.
That being said I use T-Mobile so I just use the built in tether option in my phone, but my buddy who is on Verizon uses open garden and it works great for pairing his A500. Sounds like you may have another issue than just the app. Never owned an LG Android phone myself but just reading through markey comments it seems like 97% of the 1 star comment are someone on an LG phone that can't get something to work, maybe it just the phone lol.
i had a vortex. If you can get barnacle or wifi tether for root users to send out a non-adhoc signal, it'll work really well. Does take a bit of trial and error (and using different versions of the apk) to make it work, but once it does its flawless.
OK good suggestions. My issues is I don't like paying Verizon for something that should be free, I have the older unlimited data package, and I can't find open garden anywhere but the market.

My point is, that this is an Acer Iconia Forum and if u have a question in relation to u r LG phone then ask it in the LG forum or r u just too lazy to look for an LG forum!?

1) troll
2) Because the LG vortex forum really doesn't exist. Check the "support low end android equality" link in my sig.
also, its a good question because he wants to know what the a500 can pick up. I would tell someone to post here for this or similar questions.

here, try these:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
http://szym.net/barnacle/
OK I've tried both while playing around with all of the settings but nothing. I need an application that does NOT transmit an ad-hoc signal. Did some research on it. Just can't find the application.
Another person said the Wi-Fi tether app can send a non ad-hoc signal but I can't figure out the setting. And I have been testing all of the apps I find on my of vortex and another different phone, Motorola bravo. Neither one is seen by the Acer except the stock tether that charges $40 extra for only 2 gigs.
And no. There is no of vortex forum at all. Trust me I've looked for a long time.

Or you can just download the ad-hoc patch from here http://www.multiupload.com/AM4G3BJLBR and flash using recovery it would be a lot more simple
Lazy people grrrrr
You have to have a rooted tablet..
download the ad-hoc fix.
rename the existing file in system/bin if i remember right.
set permissions as on old file.. (root explorer file manager is best to do this )
then you can see the any of the above apps mentioned on the phone if you have it set correctly. .
you can also try PDA-NET app... it does tether between android phone and tablet.. but i have not personally tried it..its in beta i think still free and on the market.. the app has to be installed on phone and tablet.. this is the flashable cwm zip.. or you can extract the file from it..
good luck . BY THE WAY THIS HAS BEEN ANSWERED OVER A MILLION TIMES on this forum.. GOOGLE SEARCH CAN BE YOUR FRIEND AND MAKE YOU LOOK LESS LAZY ..

wifi tether > settings > change setup method
And the LG vortex is just the Verizion variant of the LG Optimus One, which there IS a forum for, tho support for the vortex there is minimal.
Got it!
OK. I got it working out now. My a500 will see all ad-hoc networks now. I did the wap-suplement swap thing. Had to do it manually and play with the permissions a bit but now it works.
And to everybody, I posted here for two reasons,
ONE: I was trying to get wifi on my tablet
TWO: I wanted help to find an app/fix for various phones or for tablet.
And still there is no official forum for the LG Vortex but there is one for the Motorola Bravo and I wanted to be able to tether both of the phones as needed.
