Ok I've been looking around the market and I just can't seem to find a wireless wifi tethering app that my acer will see that is compatable with a LG Vortex. I have tried the opengarden app that has worked for everything else, barnicle tether and 2 or 3 others that I can't remember. Help is nice.
What do u need a thethring app for wifi on the tablet? Turn on the wifi hotspot on the lg and then connect the iconia to it.

He is running it on the LG but the Acer can't find it to connect to it.
That being said I use T-Mobile so I just use the built in tether option in my phone, but my buddy who is on Verizon uses open garden and it works great for pairing his A500. Sounds like you may have another issue than just the app. Never owned an LG Android phone myself but just reading through markey comments it seems like 97% of the 1 star comment are someone on an LG phone that can't get something to work, maybe it just the phone lol.
i had a vortex. If you can get barnacle or wifi tether for root users to send out a non-adhoc signal, it'll work really well. Does take a bit of trial and error (and using different versions of the apk) to make it work, but once it does its flawless.
OK good suggestions. My issues is I don't like paying Verizon for something that should be free, I have the older unlimited data package, and I can't find open garden anywhere but the market.

2) Because the LG vortex forum really doesn't exist. Check the "support low end android equality" link in my sig.
also, its a good question because he wants to know what the a500 can pick up. I would tell someone to post here for this or similar questions.

here, try these:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
http://szym.net/barnacle/
OK I've tried both while playing around with all of the settings but nothing. I need an application that does NOT transmit an ad-hoc signal. Did some research on it. Just can't find the application.
Another person said the Wi-Fi tether app can send a non ad-hoc signal but I can't figure out the setting. And I have been testing all of the apps I find on my of vortex and another different phone, Motorola bravo. Neither one is seen by the Acer except the stock tether that charges $40 extra for only 2 gigs.
And no. There is no of vortex forum at all. Trust me I've looked for a long time.

Or you can just download the ad-hoc patch from here http://www.multiupload.com/AM4G3BJLBR and flash using recovery it would be a lot more simple
Lazy people grrrrr
You have to have a rooted tablet..
download the ad-hoc fix.
rename the existing file in system/bin if i remember right.
set permissions as on old file.. (root explorer file manager is best to do this )
then you can see the any of the above apps mentioned on the phone if you have it set correctly. .
you can also try PDA-NET app... it does tether between android phone and tablet.. but i have not personally tried it..its in beta i think still free and on the market.. the app has to be installed on phone and tablet.. this is the flashable cwm zip.. or you can extract the file from it..
good luck . BY THE WAY THIS HAS BEEN ANSWERED OVER A MILLION TIMES on this forum.. GOOGLE SEARCH CAN BE YOUR FRIEND AND MAKE YOU LOOK LESS LAZY ..

And the LG vortex is just the Verizion variant of the LG Optimus One, which there IS a forum for, tho support for the vortex there is minimal.
Got it!
OK. I got it working out now. My a500 will see all ad-hoc networks now. I did the wap-suplement swap thing. Had to do it manually and play with the permissions a bit but now it works.
And to everybody, I posted here for two reasons,
ONE: I was trying to get wifi on my tablet
TWO: I wanted help to find an app/fix for various phones or for tablet.
And still there is no official forum for the LG Vortex but there is one for the Motorola Bravo and I wanted to be able to tether both of the phones as needed.

It's best to learn yourself, because that way you know what happens to your phone.
I no longer root other people's phone or mod it in any way. There is always that .00001% chance the phone would brick. I would feel horrible if I broke somebody's phone.
Not to be mean either but people come back to me for "Tech support" Blaming me that there phone isn't working properly because I "Rooted it" for them.
Also.. it's really easy to do. I mean all you have to do is:
-Get samsung drivers
-Put phone in USB Diagnostic Mode
-Run the Noobnl one click root.
Your done.
Like Pjames said.. Believe in yourself and have confidence.
Bomix is right. And its SUPER easy. If you have windows 7 you might have a smig harder time. I had to run the program 7 times to get it to finally connect and do it. But that just required double clicking it to try again. Also restaring the phone and then running the program when you see the sprint logo worked for me. But anyways, you really can't get easier than this, when I had to root my nexus one it took me forever with all the software, and dos cmd commands.

Yes, but a much, much better solution is here. Infrastructure mode, and nicely integrated into the Wireless & Networks section of the Settings app. I've installed and tested it on the MixUp kernel, and it works like a champ.

So once rooted, you don't need a special setting/program to tether, you can just use tethering programs and assume it is free?
In WM there's always the settings/program that I was paranoid about having wrong.
No... you don't use the Sprint hotspot app. This mod integrates a wireless Access Point feature/capability directly into the phone.
After installation, a new item appears in menu->settings->Wireless & networks -- "Mobile AP".
Select it, and turn it on with the checkbox. Wait while it configures everything in about a minute, then look for it with any wireless device and connect same as any AP. The device will now have internet access via your Epic.
This solution beats any other simply on account of the Infrastruture Mode implementation; however, the tight integration directly into the Android system beats the app approach too, for my tastes.
The SSID, DHCP server address range, and other wifi router/AP parameters are configurable.

just keep in mind this mod only works on stock/odexed ROMs, which if all you are doing is rooting, you have. if that is too much then you can get wifi tether but i think the market version still doesnt work on the Epic (correct me if thats changed).
the working version is here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
but you have to go to settings > applications > check unknown sources to install a file downloaded from non-market source.

As others have stated, you really should do it yourself and learn. Unless of course you dont ever plan on getting another phone that you plan to root. Most of the guides on XDA offer wasy instructions and have (some) members that will be patient and offer you assistance if you need it.
It really isnt that difficult with the guides and instructions some have posted. Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067. My 12 year old nephew followed that post, and with minimal questions rooted his phone on his own without any issues.

I know that this does not work on DK28 currently, but if anyone could get this to work it would be very helpful. This is the only thing keeping me from going back to 2.2. I need it for one of my computers when im not home. Here is the link for it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785719
The guy said he was gong to look into replacing the sprint mobile hotspot with this. If anyone could do this and possibly include it in there rom then I could go back to 2.2. I have seen a few post of people using 2.1 because they also don't have this for 2.2. I hope there is more interest and we can possibly get this done. I would try but I know nothing about how to do it.
Thanks in advance for anyone that is able to do this, or has interest in it.
FYI - I have gotten every wireless device in my house to see and use this app. (ps3, 3 laptops).
I'm on Mammon's Bonzai ROM and using the Sprint Hotspot app just fine. The only issue I'm having is that 4G drops when I get or make a call while using the hotspot.

assuming your paying for the feature as well. Ill take a stab and say he wants a free infrastructure hot spot, which I think as of right now is only possible on 2.1 odexed roms. Wireless tether crawls in comparison, the loading of web pages on my computer is so slow with wireless tether, plus mobile ap doesn't get my phone hot even when charging, also when u connect multiple compters and devices to wireless tether it crawls more mobile ap I've connected 4 devices on 1x speed and 2 of them were streaming u tube in under a minute of loading, plus mobile ap is so much better looking and not an extra app u have to have its part of your settings and kicks ass plus it works superbly on 4g when wiress tether doesnt...

Rom: Never stock, but always with some Gingerbread.
Ok one of the reasons I mainly got this phone was the mobile hotspot feature because the internet at my college blows and it would be nice for everyone to be able to browse the internet in a single dorm and not just 2 people. Unfortunately Sprint has made it so this feature costs an addition 25 with your bill. I don't pay the bill so this isn't an option for me. I heard that if you root the epic, you can use the mobile hotpot feature for free. I haven't rooted it yet but I have the z4 root application on my phone. So how can I go about doing this?
Run z4root and then download and run wireless tether. Its not on the market so google it and you will find the latest version. I don't recall whether it will run on a stock kernel; if not you'll want to install a custom rom.

If you are on 2.1 the best way is to get clockwork (use the one click root) then find mobile ap in the dev section and apply the zip. Way more stable than wireless tether in my experience.

Thanks much Jay. Gonna give that link the once over before I mess with the phone itself. Thanks ipaq as well. I'll check that out if I find any problems with the one in Jay's link.
Definitly if you are staying on stock rom, use mobile ap, it is soooooooooo much better then wireless tether, and if you follow my tutorial after rooting and getting clockwork first you can have themes with it too.
I think what he's trying to say about your expectations is you think you can do this and give everyone internet on your dorm. Do you know how slow that will run? Also you can only connect so many devices at one time. I don't know how many for wireless tether but mobile AP is 5. Yes wireless tether is a great feature its just not going to meet your expectations for helping a while dorm out.

Yeah, I don't plan on doing anything crazy like torrenting. I'd use this to tether my iPad if I'm in an airport or on a long trip, or maybe if I'm on vacation and don't wanna pay $10-30 for the hotel's wifi. That's all. Nothing mundo crazy where I'm using gigs of transfers.
Thanks for letting me know!
I have a question that I hope someone here can answer.
I've toyed with the idea of installing one of the hotspot programs. But, I'm very wary of surfing the Net without a NAT/firewall between my Windows box and the Net. Do these programs provide firewall-type protection to the machines that are surfing through them?
Drake
Iv searched and searched but can't find anything specifically answering my question in layman terms.....ok here goes, before I had my phone rooted I paid 30 for one month for the sprint hotspot on my epic and used it on my ps3 to play call of duty and it worked perfect. Then a co worker told me about the rooting and free tethering so I had it done and the phone works fine, its a little faster and all that jazz but the tether feature only works on certain devices (ipod touch and 1 of my laptops) but will not work on my ps3 at all. My question is why and how can I fix it.....
I can't say I've tried this, but here's a thread with some knowledgeable input that might help you along:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834373
Ok I'm lost. It has 2 downloads for epic and neither zip from doing the 3finger start up and zip from sd
It is because it is an adhoc signal. Some devices won't connect or even see an adhoc signal I believe the ps3 is a device that won't cnnect to an adhoc signal. You might have to contact sony on the specs though.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
i understand the logic behind that but why does sprints stock "hotspot" work fine on ps3 but all "aftermarket" tethers do not
I've never used the sprint hotspot, but it probably transmits in infrastructure mode (like a wireless router), and not ad hoc mode (like wirelssly conncting two computers together without a router). The truth is, no ones been able to get infrastructure mode working on di18 (which is android 2.1, and you are probably running it if you didn't go to dk28, which is android 2.2).
Now, you could try going to dk28, but it can be buggy, and I don't think the wireless tether in infrastucture mode works perfectly either. So in otherwords, it might get complicated for you.
I have an xbox360, which also doesn't connect to ad hoc networks. So instead, I use a wired tether program, pdaNet (the free version). My setup is epic wired tethered to my laptop, then an ethernet cable to connect my laptop to my xbox. If you have a laptop that you can use for this setup, I highly recommend it. There's also probably less lag than with wireless tether since wireless has more latency than a usb cable.

If your Epic is running Eclair 2.1 and you're already rooted, then you're in business.
You need to flash the modified hotspot app that was ripped from the Vibrant (and modified for each of the Galaxy S series), and you're golden. After doing this, use the Sprint Hotspot app like usual with no need to pay the $30 fee, plus it's working in infrastructure mode (everything wifi friendly), not ad-hoc (some wifi friendly).

If your going to go back to stock anyway (2.1, not 2.2), just root/cwm and flash the existing MobileAP for 2.1, as that will work without having to pay the extra $30/month. The trouble you were having is that the way the hotspot feature works got changed in 2.2, so the zip for 2.1 that you flashed wont work correctly.
If indeed you are going back to 2.1, this will only work on an odexed rom, in other words, a stock rom (custom kernel is fine) or possibly a custom rom after running the odexer tool in the dev section before you install/use MobileAP.

I really hate to get this way but the modded Mobile AP is ONLY FOR 2.1 Eclair NOT 2.2. It says so in the post. THAT'S WHY IT DID NOT WORK or FORCE CLOSED on you because you're running 2.2 Froyo!!

That said, try this. WIFI Tether for Root Users
Open Garden WiFi tether from the market also works nicely.

There's always the option of running a rom that has it preinstalled, such as CommunityRom, which has a hacked default hotspot, or CM7/MIUI, which have their own.
What OS are you on for your PC?

+1 on the WIFI Tether for Root Users as it supports infastructure mode instead of just adhoc.

Running Win7. Was finally able to connect after flashing a fresh CM7 nightly and using built in tethering. Though it took a few minutes to actually get internet access. I would prefer to use wifi tether, but just can't connect to it in infrastructure, only ad-hoc, even after I snagged an AP module from EVO system dump. It seems infrastructure mode on DInc is really hit or miss.

Have you tried PdaNET. That is what I use. It works great for me. I just used it on my trip I just took.
