Why should I root??? - Xoom General

When I got my EVO I wanted to root, to allow me to install wireless tether..
Also to installs some "not paid" apps
But now that I got the Xoom, I'm trying to find reasons to root.
What are the main benefits to rooting?????? the Xoom that is.
THANKS!

I rooted my Xoom so I could connected to my rooted Flipside's AdHoc tether network.

I have NO clue what you're talking about..
But I tether my phone to xoom all the time and it works fine..
Are you saying I can connect to a network with my Xoom if I root it?
Without tethering my phone????

Where to begin...CWM recovery, Titanium Backup, faasssttt Tiamat overclocked kernels and super-functional ROMs, smooth buttery scrolling, customize to your heart's content, total control over your device, write to external sdcard, usb host mode, use of thumb drives and HDDs, ad hoc tethering, theming...Tiamat Controls (also Rogue goodness, your choice)...

I rooted so I can access my school's VPN, have better controls over the hardware, increase my speed, writing to my SD card, and making it more viable as a replacement for my laptop. Seriously, when you root, you unlock functionality that you wish you will never be without.

So when ics roms start dropping, that su will be needed.

When you root you will no longer be able to get automatic updates. I had to re-flash a stock image, then go through many download update/reboot cycles to get the latest update.
I had to root my g-tablet in order to install Android Market. I really haven't found a great need to root the Xoom.

I rooted when I first got the zoom back in April but then unrooted for the ota's but now it seems ice will come via cyanogen before moto pushes it out so I re-rooted. The zoom is faster on tiamat kernal and I like having full control of my device.

I bought a 3G xoom on eBay - sent it off and got it converted to LTE 4G but I only use only wifi.
I want full access to the externel micro SDHC card and I want to be able to attach a thumbdrive or a HDD via an OTG goodie.
If ICS lets me do that KEWL, why bother rooting? If not its root city!

If you root, just flash the new Odachi kernel...that will give you the function you want without killing your 4G.

Why do you need a reason? If you want to root, then do it.
What you should have done is searched before posting:

Yeah, actually, I missed that when I first read it....
@OP, xda developers does not condone and will not facilitate anyone getting paid apps for free, if that's what you meant. It will get you bounced. You do understand why, right?

Because if you don't... We'll kill you.
But most likely you'll get a virus on your phone and then come here crying about it.. then we'll have to kill you.

No go. Seems to create a network, but my computer fails to connect even after letting it sit for a while. It does ask for an receive root permission and doesn't seem to throw any errors.
look at logcat see if you can find the errors
From twitter:
wesgarner: @localmuaythai yup will have wifi tether working *crosses fingers*

Are you sure they are surfing?? are your on slidemetoot2 or on the tmo rom
just a tip I still havent rooted but I did miss my tether so I looked into EasyTether and it lets you tether without root. The lite version lets you surf any site except https so basically you can surf anything except secure sites you have to log into. If you like to the lite version though you can always buy the full version. This is what I am using until I root.

Sorry, I jumped the gun a bit. My computer would connect to the device, but that was all. I couldn't do any kind of data transfer.

This is true but you can log into sites that have a login as long as they are not HTTPS.
But i downloaded it and installed it in less then 15 minutes and it works great!
**** root.
Multi touch, tether, flash, and sick widgets? Why does one need root?
2.2 Will bring Aps2sd and all will be fine.

Honestly, the only real reason I want root at all is hopes of a Sense rom that mirrors HTC sense. HTC took a plain, boring GUI and turned it into something beautiful, something elegant. Not that Espresso isn't nice looking, but compared to Sense it's nothing.
Also, I want to remove all of the **** that HTC and Tmo insisted we needed, such as Peep, Stocks, Amazon MP3 (google, but still), and all the MyFaves junk.

Yeah its great. The one reason I really cared for root was for tether and now with EasyTether it doesnt seem worth the hassle. At least not with this phone, if I still had my G1 I would think different. You say 2.2 will bring apps2sd, is that a definite? Have we heard when we will see 2.2 on the Slide?
But Easytether is only via usb right?

Found wifi tether without root!

Not sure if anyone has realized this yet, and I apologize if this is a repost, but I recently download power control plus from the market and tried out the "wi-fi tethering" control. It works without root and appears on the other device as "androidap."
If anyone was interested in this and doesn't want to root.
EDIT: just realized it won't fully connect. Oh well, sorry.

I've just been using Wireless Tether for Root Users. Works flawlessly with temp root. It just doesn't seem like their is any easy way to get tethering to work without temp root.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre11.apk
At least temp root is very easily done. I hope T-Mo doesn't catch on to root apps and starts charging.
I don't know how they could manage to charge for rooted tethering apps to work. I believe all they can do is continue throttling heavy users.

I wouldn't know either but sometimes phone companies get smart. They somehow got smart with BlackBerry's tether but it was a little different for BB phones than it is for Android phones.
At least I hope they just throttle at the most and they don't add extra charges. I'm a poor college kid as it is >.>....
They never did anything with the BB's I have had one on TMO and tethered for YEARs no issues slow as F*&k but it worked (internet at work is monitored). They never said anything.
I also wifi tether and use Pdanet now on my shiny G2.

[Q] 2 questions

hi folks.. I have a couple questions.
1. Can I tether (via USB) my A7 to my non-rooted Sprint evo.. if so what tethering app do I use?
2. I have a Verizon USB 3g modem... can I use it with my tablet? What program do I use?
Thanks all keep up the great work..

No on both counts.
So.... rooting my evo.. I love it as it is.. how much better is it rooted.. I am tempted because of free WiFi... but from a functional stand point it is pretty good stock..

I rooted mine with unrevoked3.
The biggest reason I did it was for wifi tethering.
root + Wireless Tether (available from market) = joy
If you are not going to be running custom roms and such, the only difference you will notice is an app called "Superuser Permissions" in your app drawer... And the superficial feeling of superiority over most other (normal) Evo users due to the fact that your phone now does what you want, and theirs still doesn't
Edit: after rooting, only use the tether app for tethering and DO NOT use the HotSpot app that came with the phone. That is, unless you actually want to pay Sprint $30 extra a month to actually be able to use your "unlimited" data plan.

Can't decide if I should root my atrix or not

Hi there,
I am debating if I should root my Atrix or not. I checked out few posts and they seem a bit complecated. Also, I found this article saying carriers will track down rooted devices and restricted services.
By the way, can I still install some of Motorola o/s for dock stations? I have a multimedia and a car dock.
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...rooting-manufacturers-carriers.html#post65013
Any thoughts?
No one will track you down and restrict you. And it's very safe to root.
Just for apps like Adfree which kills advertisements, this is reason enough for me to root! Not to mention super helpful things like customer recovery to back things up, the ability to sideload (install non-market apps if you're on AT&T), etc.
Android is quite open source but rooting opens up another amazing realm of extremely essential apps.

I will take your word for it then! Just kidding. Would you be able recommend any good root techniques on the forum? I think there are few methods and am not sure which one is the best.
Thank you!
I say root it. I rooted mine and i love it this way. I had mine for only two days before I rooted it. I was a little nervous at first and felt that i really didnt want to do it, but the benefits were too great with a rooted phone than without a rooted phone. I am on the AT&T network and i hate it when someone tries to tell me what I can't do with something I purchased. Trust me when i say that you are going to want software that is not in the market as well.
And... I really, really love the fact that I don't need to be docked to use my WebTop.
Again... i say root it.

Gladroot. It's the easiest and can enable tethering and sideloading as well.
You must be on 1.2.6 to root. You can run their first script which will root it. You can then do AT&T's download and run their second script which will root that too. BOOM!
It shouldn't take any longer than 10 minutes.
Well... there was that one thing where AT&T is supposedly locking out, or might be locking out phones that have been determined to be rooted. But the fact of the matter is, if they do that with absolutely no reason other than the phone being rooted, i'm sure you'll see a class action lawsuit about it since rooting/jailbreaking a cell phone is legal now according to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The only reason i can see them disabling service is if you root it, and use one of the alternate methods of tethering, and wind up using a TON of bandwidth.... well over what anyone would even remotely do on just the phone if they didn't have any tethering package or way to tether. Then you'd basically be using their networks in a way that could be deemed illegal. But there's no issue with just rooting it to use applications not approved by the carrier or phone manufacturer.
Would you want to be admin on your own computer?
I think rooting is a must. The use of sideloading alone is worth it. I would hate to not be able to use the Amazon Appstore, Ive really come to like it.
One thing to mention though. The Blockbuster app detects root and wont allow content to be purchased because of DRM concerns. I dont know if this will be a problem with future apps.
Yeah, I did!
I rooted my Atrix with "gladroot" last night. Can't wait to customize it now.
Thank you very much for your valid inputs everyone!!!

Wifi tether without root?

Just moved from an HTC Rezound to the EVO 4G. My Nexus 7 and Rezound are rooted running custom ROM's, the Rezound was S-Off.
New EVO 4G though, I would like to keep close to stock for warranty purposes. All I really need is wifi tether to work so I can give occasional internet access to my tablet. With VZW, I averaged 2-3gb a month max, between the phone and tablet combined. So my data usage is not heavy, but I do need to tether from time to time.
I searched and found several apps for tethering a laptop through a USB cable, but that won't work for the tablet.
So is there a simple and effective wifi tether app that I can sideload to the phone, even if there is a cost for the app? Or do I have to root to get the standard Google Wifi Tether app? If I have to root, I don't think I need S-Off and all sorts of stuff that could cause a warranty issue in the future. Whatever the absolute minimum required to get Wifi Tether will suffice.
Thanks!

I've heard you can tether via bluetooth with FoxFi, but I've never tried it myself. If all you want is to surf the web on your tablet that may be enough for you.
If you try it do let me know how it went.

The latest ota breaks foxfi. I think that root is my only option. What's the simplest method? I don't need s-off or custom Roms, just root for tethering.
Here you go. It's the HTCdev method (assuming you're on Hboot 2.18) which will give you an unlocked bootloader and root.

I'm still on 2.2. I had a bad experience rooting the first time, so I've been hesitant to flash a newer ROM. At some point I'll work up the courage and flash a 2.3 ROM. So the long and the short of it is: I won't be of much help. But look around the forum. Plenty of folks can help you.
