look at logcat see if you can find the errors

Are you sure they are surfing?? are your on slidemetoot2 or on the tmo rom
just a tip I still havent rooted but I did miss my tether so I looked into EasyTether and it lets you tether without root. The lite version lets you surf any site except https so basically you can surf anything except secure sites you have to log into. If you like to the lite version though you can always buy the full version. This is what I am using until I root.

This is true but you can log into sites that have a login as long as they are not HTTPS.
But i downloaded it and installed it in less then 15 minutes and it works great!
**** root.
Multi touch, tether, flash, and sick widgets? Why does one need root?
2.2 Will bring Aps2sd and all will be fine.

Honestly, the only real reason I want root at all is hopes of a Sense rom that mirrors HTC sense. HTC took a plain, boring GUI and turned it into something beautiful, something elegant. Not that Espresso isn't nice looking, but compared to Sense it's nothing.
Also, I want to remove all of the **** that HTC and Tmo insisted we needed, such as Peep, Stocks, Amazon MP3 (google, but still), and all the MyFaves junk.

Yeah its great. The one reason I really cared for root was for tether and now with EasyTether it doesnt seem worth the hassle. At least not with this phone, if I still had my G1 I would think different. You say 2.2 will bring apps2sd, is that a definite? Have we heard when we will see 2.2 on the Slide?
But Easytether is only via usb right?

yeah small updates, i think i'll keep my current version since its not broken.
Hopefully they make a version to support Froyo. I know it's kinda redundent but I like the interface of wireless tether, and the fact that I can use internet on the phone while i'm tethered, on froyo it locks the phone out of using internet when wifi tether is on.

It's best to learn yourself, because that way you know what happens to your phone.
I no longer root other people's phone or mod it in any way. There is always that .00001% chance the phone would brick. I would feel horrible if I broke somebody's phone.
Not to be mean either but people come back to me for "Tech support" Blaming me that there phone isn't working properly because I "Rooted it" for them.
Also.. it's really easy to do. I mean all you have to do is:
-Get samsung drivers
-Put phone in USB Diagnostic Mode
-Run the Noobnl one click root.
Your done.
Like Pjames said.. Believe in yourself and have confidence.
Bomix is right. And its SUPER easy. If you have windows 7 you might have a smig harder time. I had to run the program 7 times to get it to finally connect and do it. But that just required double clicking it to try again. Also restaring the phone and then running the program when you see the sprint logo worked for me. But anyways, you really can't get easier than this, when I had to root my nexus one it took me forever with all the software, and dos cmd commands.

Yes, but a much, much better solution is here. Infrastructure mode, and nicely integrated into the Wireless & Networks section of the Settings app. I've installed and tested it on the MixUp kernel, and it works like a champ.

So once rooted, you don't need a special setting/program to tether, you can just use tethering programs and assume it is free?
In WM there's always the settings/program that I was paranoid about having wrong.
No... you don't use the Sprint hotspot app. This mod integrates a wireless Access Point feature/capability directly into the phone.
After installation, a new item appears in menu->settings->Wireless & networks -- "Mobile AP".
Select it, and turn it on with the checkbox. Wait while it configures everything in about a minute, then look for it with any wireless device and connect same as any AP. The device will now have internet access via your Epic.
This solution beats any other simply on account of the Infrastruture Mode implementation; however, the tight integration directly into the Android system beats the app approach too, for my tastes.
The SSID, DHCP server address range, and other wifi router/AP parameters are configurable.

just keep in mind this mod only works on stock/odexed ROMs, which if all you are doing is rooting, you have. if that is too much then you can get wifi tether but i think the market version still doesnt work on the Epic (correct me if thats changed).
the working version is here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
but you have to go to settings > applications > check unknown sources to install a file downloaded from non-market source.

As others have stated, you really should do it yourself and learn. Unless of course you dont ever plan on getting another phone that you plan to root. Most of the guides on XDA offer wasy instructions and have (some) members that will be patient and offer you assistance if you need it.
It really isnt that difficult with the guides and instructions some have posted. Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067. My 12 year old nephew followed that post, and with minimal questions rooted his phone on his own without any issues.

Ok one of the reasons I mainly got this phone was the mobile hotspot feature because the internet at my college blows and it would be nice for everyone to be able to browse the internet in a single dorm and not just 2 people. Unfortunately Sprint has made it so this feature costs an addition 25 with your bill. I don't pay the bill so this isn't an option for me. I heard that if you root the epic, you can use the mobile hotpot feature for free. I haven't rooted it yet but I have the z4 root application on my phone. So how can I go about doing this?
Run z4root and then download and run wireless tether. Its not on the market so google it and you will find the latest version. I don't recall whether it will run on a stock kernel; if not you'll want to install a custom rom.

I'm not sure if the device listed works with epic but it said galaxy device. Also will sprint notice the increase of data usage and charge me more?
Nope, unless you start dl movies.

If you are on 2.1 the best way is to get clockwork (use the one click root) then find mobile ap in the dev section and apply the zip. Way more stable than wireless tether in my experience.

Thanks much Jay. Gonna give that link the once over before I mess with the phone itself. Thanks ipaq as well. I'll check that out if I find any problems with the one in Jay's link.
Definitly if you are staying on stock rom, use mobile ap, it is soooooooooo much better then wireless tether, and if you follow my tutorial after rooting and getting clockwork first you can have themes with it too.
I think what he's trying to say about your expectations is you think you can do this and give everyone internet on your dorm. Do you know how slow that will run? Also you can only connect so many devices at one time. I don't know how many for wireless tether but mobile AP is 5. Yes wireless tether is a great feature its just not going to meet your expectations for helping a while dorm out.

If you don't pay the $30 a month charge for hotspotting, will Sprint find out and charge you any extra if you tether your phone after rooting it?

Ive been tethering since i had windows mobile, and ive never been in trouble, just dont download movies or any other big files. I mean its not even worth it to download movies takes too long anyhow. Just dont take your phone in rooted with that app on it or then u might get into some trouble.
If you have an epic 4g you have unlimited (truely unlimited) data...they are not going to say anything regardless of how much data you use. That being said spint will not Check the status of your phone (root or un rooted). You are go to go on tethering

Yeah, I don't plan on doing anything crazy like torrenting. I'd use this to tether my iPad if I'm in an airport or on a long trip, or maybe if I'm on vacation and don't wanna pay $10-30 for the hotel's wifi. That's all. Nothing mundo crazy where I'm using gigs of transfers.
Thanks for letting me know!
I have a question that I hope someone here can answer.
I've toyed with the idea of installing one of the hotspot programs. But, I'm very wary of surfing the Net without a NAT/firewall between my Windows box and the Net. Do these programs provide firewall-type protection to the machines that are surfing through them?
Drake
Iv searched and searched but can't find anything specifically answering my question in layman terms.....ok here goes, before I had my phone rooted I paid 30 for one month for the sprint hotspot on my epic and used it on my ps3 to play call of duty and it worked perfect. Then a co worker told me about the rooting and free tethering so I had it done and the phone works fine, its a little faster and all that jazz but the tether feature only works on certain devices (ipod touch and 1 of my laptops) but will not work on my ps3 at all. My question is why and how can I fix it.....
I can't say I've tried this, but here's a thread with some knowledgeable input that might help you along:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834373
Ok I'm lost. It has 2 downloads for epic and neither zip from doing the 3finger start up and zip from sd
It is because it is an adhoc signal. Some devices won't connect or even see an adhoc signal I believe the ps3 is a device that won't cnnect to an adhoc signal. You might have to contact sony on the specs though.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
i understand the logic behind that but why does sprints stock "hotspot" work fine on ps3 but all "aftermarket" tethers do not
I've never used the sprint hotspot, but it probably transmits in infrastructure mode (like a wireless router), and not ad hoc mode (like wirelssly conncting two computers together without a router). The truth is, no ones been able to get infrastructure mode working on di18 (which is android 2.1, and you are probably running it if you didn't go to dk28, which is android 2.2).
Now, you could try going to dk28, but it can be buggy, and I don't think the wireless tether in infrastucture mode works perfectly either. So in otherwords, it might get complicated for you.
I have an xbox360, which also doesn't connect to ad hoc networks. So instead, I use a wired tether program, pdaNet (the free version). My setup is epic wired tethered to my laptop, then an ethernet cable to connect my laptop to my xbox. If you have a laptop that you can use for this setup, I highly recommend it. There's also probably less lag than with wireless tether since wireless has more latency than a usb cable.

If your Epic is running Eclair 2.1 and you're already rooted, then you're in business.
You need to flash the modified hotspot app that was ripped from the Vibrant (and modified for each of the Galaxy S series), and you're golden. After doing this, use the Sprint Hotspot app like usual with no need to pay the $30 fee, plus it's working in infrastructure mode (everything wifi friendly), not ad-hoc (some wifi friendly).

If your going to go back to stock anyway (2.1, not 2.2), just root/cwm and flash the existing MobileAP for 2.1, as that will work without having to pay the extra $30/month. The trouble you were having is that the way the hotspot feature works got changed in 2.2, so the zip for 2.1 that you flashed wont work correctly.
If indeed you are going back to 2.1, this will only work on an odexed rom, in other words, a stock rom (custom kernel is fine) or possibly a custom rom after running the odexer tool in the dev section before you install/use MobileAP.

The new cleanGB rom is the best i've used, not the fastest but everything works and has been perfectly stable. for tethering i use open garden wifi - this is no longer listed on my market but if you do a google search for it, you can install it directly from their website for free. that's the best/easiest/most stable tether program i've used.

I'm not a big tetherer but I seem to recall doing a USB tether a while back and Wireless Hotspot hack is built-in. It also included a few other "nice" hacks that I like. Alternatively, as was mentioned, the android wi-fi tether app worked well when I did use it.

The wireless hack works great, its been built into my roms for some time now. But occasionally I still have to use alternate tether apps, as things like my TouchPad can't see Sprint Hotspot for some dumb reason.
wow just came back on and saw all the responses. Thanks again but what i am looking for is a basic rooted gingerbread rom with touch wiz and sprint hotspot. any further help would be appreciated.
Search works well. Google is great from what I hear.

It has already been answered. There were several suggestions. Go to Development and pick one that was suggested and you will see they are exactly what you asked.
