New phone from Tmobile? - Vibrant General

So I have one of the original Vibrants from last summer when they first came out. It doesn't matter what I do to the phone, update, root, rom, the gps signal always sucks and never works very well when using it as a gps to navigate somewhere as it always loses signal and the gps stops working.
My question is do you think its worth it to put it back to stock and call Tmobile and complain and see if they will send me a new one? Do the new ones still have the GPS problems? Thanks in advance.

I did that a few weeks ago. They said it was a known problem and that they wouldn't give me a new one. I told them that my volume buttons was loose and then they sent me a refurbished one. Don't tell them your phone is rooted.

No I won't tell them it was rooted at all. I just want the damn GPS to work, it was sold to me on the basis that it had gps and it doesn't even work so it pisses me off.

Tell me if it works then I might do the same.

I had the same issue with GPS on an early Vibrant. I don't have a T-mobile contract, I just use a prepaid T-mobile voice sim with data via wifi (I have a CLEAR hotspot).
I expected T-mobile not to do anything without a contract, but to my surprise they easily agreed to an exchange. The rep went through a check list asking me if I had upgraded to the latest firmware and tried the Samsung app that resets the GPS. I said yes, and the next thing on his checklist was authorize the exchange.
It took 3 weeks for them to process my return and get the replacement to me. I don't know if its new or refurb. I had to send it in without battery, cell sim. ,memory sim or back, and they sent me back the same thing in a non-descript packing.
Again, I don't know if its new or not, it looks mint. The tag inside lists "STA 11.05" which I assume means its manufactured in May 2011, which again would indicate new. (There is also a bar code that says 10.08 on the tag, so I could be wrong).
Now to the bottom line. After a day of testing I only see a marginal improvement in the GPS sync time, but I may not have tested enough yet to know. I'm running stock 2.2 KB5. Besides taking a long time to sync, my old one would occasionally hang when the gps was in use. Too soon to know about that with the replacement.
My experience tracking the replacement through T-mobile was dismal. Eager to get it back I sent it fedex overnight. They promised 7 business day replacement and I "chat"ed with them every other day for status. They basically had no information including confirmation that they received it . All they could do was have me refer to my fedex delivery receipt. As they missed deadlines they made up stories, and unabashedly contradicted promises I could paste in from the earlier "chats". Escalating to supervisors was no better. Basically, until they actually shipped the return after 3 weeks they had no information that it even had arrived.
If you have a contract they may have better return processing options. I had to deal with the pre-paid rules.
Right now I'm not sure what I'm going to do. If the 11.05 date is real, I would hope that it doesn't have the bad solder connection that people have been hacking. I suppose I could try one of the other rom's that some people say work better with gps.
I'm also tempted to try and bypass customer support and write to some higher management at T-mobile to complain. I paid $500 for the Vibrant without a contract. If anyone has a contact I would like to hear about it.

But do the new vibrants have the gps fixed?????

My guess is that the phone was originally built in Aug 2010 and refurbed in May 2011.

That cracks me up, "its a known problem, sorry you're screwed" if its a known problem... shouldn't it get fixed??
Imagine if other things worked like that too. Like when toyota had that brake problem lol

Mine works fine after I got a replacement. I get about 6-8 locks within 3 or 4 seconds and tracks my movement just fine.

Definitely ask for a replacement. I bothered them a couple times, told them I did everything, gps restore, factory reset, blah blah blah, and that it's never worked. I even told them I was rooted so I could try different roms to see if I could get the GPS to work and he just said that it was dangerous to root my phone and that I would have to return it to stock when I sent it back. They did a warranty exchange, so asking for that would help. They also sent me the replacement first and then I sent them back the old one. GPS works awesome now, within 10 feet. I've even locked on to 11 of 13 birds before. I don't always get a great signal but it is 100x's more usable than before.

Get Rom Manager Premium
Use it to put the project V Rom on your phone along with the gps fix and then come back and tell us how much you gave EDT and some of the other guys around here for helping.
I couldn't get mine to work for the longest time either but it's working great now. I don't know, about battery life, but otherwise the thing is smooooth and fast.

Wow, so after all the crying on these forums you guys are going with a carrier again huh? Cry, cry, cry but let's all conveniently forget not getting any updates.
Guess the good news for me is, I'll never get to see all the *****es on here whining again. As I'll be in the unlocked phone forum enjoying any and all benefits many months ahead of time.
It's unbelievable.
Some of you will never, ever learn.
#Neveragain 2, coming soon to a forum near you.

I had the same experience with a replacement phone, received the replacement the next day without paying for expedited shipping. The GPS has been working well, but only since I upgraded to Project V.

I got a replacement about a month ago from my original release device. GPS is much improved, but still not perfect. Fast locks, but using it for driving is still pretty hit and miss, there's just less miss. Still kind of irks me, but I guess this is as good as it gets.

my screen is cracked, though it still works fine. do you think this excusse will work in order to get a new phone? I got my vibrant the day it came out, so the gps has always sucked, though i don't use it all that often to be that much of a problem...
would love to hear what you guys think
thanks in advance!

Totally disappointed with Tmobile. Will not make the same mistake again!

T-Mobile has released an update fix for GPS problems on their Vibrant phones. Please search for it online. I tried this and my GPS works great now.

interesting info on Tmo's buyer's remorse return period

first, found out that buyer's remorse or return period on phones that Tmo ships to the buyer, ie purchased online or on the phone, is 20 days, not the 14 days for phones purchased at a store
2nd, i called in to ask if they were willing to extend the return period, stating that i was going to return it this friday, but if an OTA update did come out and fixed the GPS issue, i'd be re-ordering the phone - it might make sense to give me an extension in case that OTA did come out and did work - CSR said he would research it and get back to me
i also told em that as it is now, this phone doesn't leave the house, as without GPS it's no good to me ( i generally have to make 2 - 4 cross town trips to client's location and the MT3G gets me there, spot on everytime
he just called back, saying the part about my return period was actually 20 days, and they were extending it another 30 days to Sept 16th and he was putting a note in my acct to that effect - i noted his name & operator id
FWIW - for those of you like me, love the phone but need a working GPS, this is a compromise solution or a momentary solution

Hmm. I bought my first Vibrant online and the replacement over the phone. They told me the exchange period for each transaction was 14 days.
I am so lucky. I keep reading from almost everyone that their GPS doesn't work. I changed my GPS server settings to google satelites and works perfect and super quick to lock, and I don't even need it LOL. I personaly don't like to use the phone as GPS since I am always texting and hate to interrupt the navigation to text or viceversa, so I just have a Garming and deal with two devices, works better for me that way

this is getting old. just cause yours is one way, doesn't mean they all are. i can try your app, but using the *#*#1472365#*#* code and using gps test i get 11 in the list and 8 connected. but i'm sure 8 isn't accurate, even though the gps gets me typically within 5-10'...
as for the op, i'm glad tmob is working with people, cause this is an amazing phone. i hope samsung does get a fix out there so everyone's gps works.

Actually, for me, it's pretty accurate when using the Google Nav app. Really, never had a problem with it in real world use, but can't get a single lock with GPS Status indoors.
I downloaded it, it says Error 6(m) [whatever that means] and fix/sat is 2/8
So I don't know what that means LOL, but I guess its off by 6 meters and it only locks to 2 sats out of 8... so I guess its not working , but its all good, like I said, I don't care for GPS on the phone
California gives you 30 days to return the phone.

TMobile is generally willing to help, so if you call and ask for an extension in order to wait for the GPS fix, they'll likely extend it.
My MT3G last night got 0 fixes on 13 satellites bounced around between like 9 and 12 satellites for about 10 minutes. Loaded Google Maps took a few minutes to show where I was, didn't bother to tell me how accurate it was because it wasn't close to my location.
Navigation takes pretty much forever as well.
Samsung Galaxy S is a Lemon!!!
I just got off the phone with T-mobile for the second time and the customer service rep says T-mobile knows of no problems with the GPS and she goes on to tell me she has the same phone and it works great. She then tells me to dial *#9999# and to read off my software version. That is the newest version she says and you can send in your phone under warranty and get a refurbished one. Forget You Lady and Forget T-mobile. The Samsung Galaxy S is a LEMON!!
LOL, i still have 3 weeks left on my remorse period, and this is before extension.
No such extension for me

I tried asking for an extended return period, too, and found no joy. Also the rep confirmed what the previous rep had told me about my online and over-the-phone orders: The period is 14 days.
My 14 days on this, my second Vibrant, is almost up. So we made arrangements for me to return it tomorrow by UPS and for T-Mobile to undo my two-year contract extension associated with the purchase. I could not make that huge commitment for a phone with a faulty GPS, even though the other features of the Vibrant are compelling.
So for the time being, I will return to using my old G1 while I await an off-contract solution. Meanwhile, I expect to monitor closely the GPS issue on the Samsung Galaxy S, including how the rollout goes with other carriers.
The ROM in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743769 fixed the GPS issue. I don't expect all of you to flash your phone in order fort the GPS to work but this is reassurance that Samsung can easily fix the issue.
All I'd say is be careful with this. I was told the same thing...that I had 20 days because I bought the phone through T-Mobile's web site. When I called, however, I was assured that it was 14-days and I was on day 17, and therefore SOL if I wanted to return the device.
My gps works perfectly.... in fact it cold starts MUCH faster than my hd2 does....
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I had 5 days left on my 30 days to return (I live in Cali), and could not get an extension. I returned the phone for a full refund, no restocking fee, and returned upgrade, so I'm happy I guess. I'd rather wait with my money in pocket. Who knows when Samsung will actually put out a fix for this thing and who knows if it will actually work. By then I'm sure the next-gen HSPA+ dual chip blah-blah will be out.
BTW, the ROM from Eugene373 had about the same results as the XDA "fix" and didn't address the compass issue.
I can only shake my head at Samsung on this one.

This is getting off-topic, but for the record the jury is still out on whether that ROM flash for rooted phones actually "fixed the GPS issue."
See, for example the feedback here. No offense to the developer, but we have seen other "fixes" that seemed at first to work, only to disappoint later. If someone wants to discuss the details of this "fix," there are other threads about the GPS issue.
We now return to the original topic, which is about T-Mobile's business terms.
Different terms (30 days) if you paid full price w/o new contract
See also the information in this thread affecting those who paid full price for the device without a new contract. They do get 30 days.

I indeed paid full price and am going to T-mobile store today. I hope I have some luck lol fingers crossed. Will report back with my findings
Edit* So I just checked my handy dandy little book that came with my purchase. According to the book theres a difference between the 14-day period and the 30-day period. The 14-day period is if you wish to cancel your contract, upgrade extension you have the ability to do that without incurring the ETF. The 30-day is in fact your real ITEM return/exchange period. We DO have a 30-day period to return or exchange these things. You wont be able to cancel your contract but you sure as hell can return OR exchange the device. And if you do it in store you shouldnt have to get a refurb one as they should just give you a new one right on the spot. So hooray for using our intellects and reading the little contract booklet they supply us!!!!

I'm so sick with my phone

So I have had my vibrant for about a month or so and for that past couple
weeks it has been nothing but headaches.
Issues I'm having:
Freezing up: freezes up no matter what im doing.whether I'm playing a game, surfing the net or on a phone call.
GPS: so I have tried all GPS walkthriugh to make it work and nothing helps. I can't even get a satellite to lock in. So I have never been able to use it.
Shuts Its self off: device shuts Its self off almost on a daily basis. I tried removing the battery but doesent help the issue. Allthough I do have to remove the battery reguardless as my phone freezes up so bad that the only way to make it work or "unfreeze" is to remove battery.
Reception: what reception? LOL. Phone is constantly loosing signal therefore calls end abruptly. Happens on a daily basis.
So with all these issues I have contacted T-Mobile and I will be receiving a replacement. Man! I really hope not to have these issues with replacement.
I figure I'll just keep replacing phones untilled I end up with a good one.
The replacement should be good...
did you mess with anything or has it been messing up with stock settings?
sounds like a bad phone
Also how often do you reboot your phone? did you ever take ou the battery and then press the power? This completley drains juice out of the phone, let it sit for a spell then plug it back in.
Go for the replacement, my GPS and phone itself works just fine. GPS works better than my G1, my Vibrant locks in 15 seconds barring no serious obstructions. My phone is always at 2 or less bars but Never and i mean Never have problems calling or texting. Go for the replacement and try it.
I had a few hiccups before but mine works perfectly fine now. Just get yours replaced. Simple fix

Mine had some lag issues but after rooting and performing "one click lag fix" (app in market) I have been nothing but overjoyed with my phone. I also use setcpu to extend my battery life and up my performance. Hope the new handset works better for you.

I had some reception issues I called Tmo and they reset the IMEI on their network no more problems after rooting and lag fix it's almost too fast sometimes I turn it on just to see how fast it is then put down in awe.
My phone is completely stock. I have no idea how to overclock and other things mentioned on this site. So I pretty much just stick with stock .
I would think that the replacement would be rush delivery maybe over night or something but they gave me an option for either mailing it "ground" that would take 5 to 7 business days at no charge or over night it, that would take 1 to 2 days for $19.99.
That is F**uCk*d up. It is not my fault that the device is crap. It is absolutely ridicules that I am given an option for a device that might be returned as well.
I went with ground since I obviously did not want or would not pay for shipping fee's.
As I'm typing this I am getting more and more angry at the shipping fee's and I am definitely calling tmobile back to argue this .
they will waive the shipping if you MAKE THEM
They waived my 3 days shipping on my cliq. But it was the second one so i bet that is why..
My phones flawless. GPS even works pretty good. Must be the phone or something your doing wrong. Cause mines awesome never freezes or lags
If I turn my gps on, it's just a matter of time before mine also locks up and a battery removal is required.
Where the HECK is froyo? It's the 9th already and I've also had enough I use gps all the time, but now I dare to turn it on.
Ive installed the ext2 lag fix and my phone is 2x faster and my battery is also 2x longer, so hopefully froyo will fix the GPS
Call and talk to the customer loyalty dept and explain your situation. I had my replacement sent express for free and they took another 100 off the phone oh and they dropped my bill 15 bucks a month lol. So far my 2nd one is performing really well... GPS and all. Only reason I needed a replacement was cause I pattern locked myself out of my 1st one. Root and 1 click lag fix your new one... It works wonders! I scored 2315 in quandrant compared to stock @ 8XX... And I can see the difference!

What exactly did you say on the anitial phone call about not paying for express shipping and how did you get $100 off the device?
I called up last night after my post on here and I talked to some rude ass chick that would not express it for free.
I'm not really good with words. If you could help me out on what to tell hem about he shipping issue I would definitely appreciate it.
I'm paying monthly for my phone since I got it retail price. Not sure if that makes a difference.
Also I have been with T-Mobile for more than 10years.
Thanks.
I got my replacement. Make sure u factory reset right away.
Ps. I only have compass issue with mine. GPS, I am not sure....when I tested with default setting it worked fine, when I switched them I ran in to a problem, but maybe I messed something up, or maybe it was just the timing. I don't use gps often enough to comment on its reliability.

As soon as the automated system asks you "What are you calling about?" Just say "cancel". That will get you to customer loyalty and they will immediately pick up the phone, you should not get put on hold. (I do this every time I call just to avoid the wait.)
Then explain that you are being sent a replacement and you currently cannot use your phone. You don't feel like you should have to wait for ground shipping because the phone is malfunctioning. If they have already shipped it then ask for a credit to your bill for the amount of time you can't use your phone. If they haven't shipped it they should offer two day shipping at no cost. If they don't offer, then ask them of they could give you some form of express shipping or some sort of compensation. Either a credit for the time you can't use the phone or a discount on your texting/data plan. They love doing discounts on plans because it keeps you in a contract and I think they get a sort of commission on evey call that wants to cancel that they prevent from canceling.
Through customer loyalty, I've received free two day shipping, $10 off each of my two data plans, and $5 off my family texting plan. In a little while I'm going to call and ask for $5 off my minutes. With all that plus a corporate discount from my school, I pay less for my contract plan than a non-contract and I still get subsidized phone.
If you don't get what you want from the first person then tell them thank you, hang up, and call again. Eventually you will get someone to give you what you want. Of course, you'll need to have been a customer of a few years to really get this to work. I've been with t-mobile for over seven years and never had a late or missed payment.
Typos and other gibberish courtesy of Swype
Upgrade it
In all honesty, I was getting the same way. While the hardware of this phone is second to none so far, the software was really bugging me. Email was flakey, battery was short, GPS was broken, frequernt 'freezes', and camera is 'eh'.
I ended up flashing to Hybrid2, and it's a totally different phone. quick and nimble, GPS works, battery now lasts about 48 hours with moderate use, and email is really nimble now!
I still am waiting for FroYo with baited breath, but Hybrid2 is at least holding me over, and preventing me from switching back to my Blackberry

Surveys says?!!! This is your problem. There's nothing particularly difficult with rooting, lag fixing, etc. Odd that you're even on XDA at all.
I had a Nexus before I had this Vibrant. I like the big screen, but really that is about all that is better with this thing. Sure we have the humming bird and we have a dedicated gpu but we have samsung's awful rfs and modified os. The Nexus was really better with froyo. I bought my Vibrant and paid full price. I have already had a warranty exchange. The GPS sucks. Even OC'd and running RyANZA's fix it is still not as glitch free as my nexus was.
So I called T-Mo today. I said cancel. I got a rep named Michael. I told him about my issues. I also explained that I lost my Nexus and due to the fact that my sim was in my Vibrant at the time, the Nexus wasn't covered under warranty. If I hadn't lost the Nexus, I would have sent the Vibrant back and just kept the Nexus. He said if I you have 2 warranty exchanges within 90 days you can switch phones for free. I haven't had that. I got my Nexus with a new 2 year contract in January when it came out. I am about 7 months into my new two year contract. Michael said he would give me a full discount on a new phone if I extend my contract. So now I have a full discount on my account waiting for G2 pre-orders.
I really need a working GPS. Also I think Cyanogen said he was getting a G2 so it should be awesome!

A GPS fix that actually worked for me!

I got a replacement phone!!.....no more problems. I bought the vibrant the first day it came out and the Gps never worked. I tried every fix posted here, flashed different roms, went up on rooftops, etc, it would never get a lock. I called Tmobile customer service last week as I was finally fed up and told them I had a faulty GPS on the phone. They said that qualified as a defect, and as my phone was still under the one year manufacturer warranty, they happily sent me a new handset which I received yesterday. The gps works quite well right out of the box, also the phone seems faster and has no gallery lag like my last one. I can't speak as to the quality of the gps which is of great controversy here, but i'm happy to have it working at all, and fairly accurate so far it seems. I highly recommend to all of those folks out there with non functioning gps....just get a new phone....this is not a cheap device and should function as intended.
Did you flash your phone back to stock before returning it? Just wondering... I've seen some talk of t-mobile not caring about flashed phones, and I'm thinking of having mine exchanged for the same reason.
I got a replacement phone too. Manufactured in November. GPS works without any problems both when I tried it stock and with Nero 1.0. No more ****ing around with it for me!
I have not flashed it back to stock. Tmobile hasn't said anything about rooting and flashing roms voiding the warranty, so I don't think it will be a problem.....I hope
How would I be able to tell the manufactured date on my phone? I dont have it here with me, but just I know when I get home...
Is it possible to attempt to replace the phone within the first year of purchase??
I got my Vibrant at Best Buy.. would I have to go to Best Buy or T-Mobile??
I seem to get some GPS locks and correct positioning ONLY when I use both GPS & Network location options... sooo I'm assuming my GPS doesnt function properly right..?? My GPS alone should be able to locate me right??
I just got my phone replaced through insurance about a week ago and noticed a increased gps lock right away
If you have the update(which everyone should have by now) and gps isnt working still, then yea I would say call it in and get it replaced. I have mine that I got when it first came out and after the update(but then this was also after flashing each and every rom/leak/etc that i went back to stock), gps works fine for me.
Just remember, dont place the phone near any large metal, or magnetic objects, this throws the compass off. And try to be in view of as much sky as possible. Being in the shadow of a building will distort the signal and throw your location/accuracy off.
perron-
You should definitely be able to get decent accuracy/locks/location from the GPS just by itself. Using wireless networks can sometimes help enough that it masks the fact that your GPS performance is sub par. I never have the "Use wireless networks" box checked as it doesn't seem to improve my GPS's performance, and sometimes it seems to hurt it. Use an app like GPS Test to get an idea of how well the GPS is functioning, and make sure you have the wireless networks option turned off.
A quick question---Don't you get a refurbished phone if you get your current phone replaced? That is the way it has always worked with me for the last 13 years with TM. Perhaps you received a refurbished phone mfg in Nov. I am still having GPS situations and have thought about asking for replacement but am concerned that I would receive one worse than what I now have, including hard locked buttons.
They will give you a "new or like-new" phone. Mine was new but it wasn't in a retail package.
my manufacture date is 7/21/2010
my gps seems to work just fine. Thats with wireless networks not checked. sometimes i cant get a lock in a building, but thats not a huge deal for me. My gps stays connected when i get a singal, doesnt wander off the route, and seems to be fairly accurate, within a few feet. I got the phone oct 22, from radio shack.
Just used the GPS Test App;

I got my replacement Vibrant last week. It was a new phone, complete with original box, battery, two back covers, headphones, instructions, usb cable, charger, and SIM card. GPS works now, locks in seconds and doesn't jump around anymore. I Odined my old phone back to stock, put it in the new box and sent it back to T-Mobile. I kept everything else.
i got my phone from tmobile off contract in august and my gps works but not very well. do i qualify for a replacement?
EDIT: Crap. Never mind, just realized you wrote "original box". I'll call for replacement. Nothing to see here. Move along...lol

The one you got, was it on a white box and wrapped in a carton-with-a-window or was it a full retail box?
I received one from insurance (Asurion) and was in a white box and indeed was refurb but all accessories in the box, including both back covers and all (was replacing a Nexus One). Got it replaced by tmo bcause the screen was greenish, and received the replacement one in an identical box, from the same address in TX, no accessories but I'd swear is new, not a single sxratch in the battery area - a telling sign (on the IMEI label under the batt says 10.07 so I assume us the nfg date). The IMEI in the box matched on both phones.
My GPS jumps all over the place, so if you definitely got a retail one, I'll ask for warrabty exchange.
I had gotten a replacement not to long ago was in original box sealed

Thanks. Based on both of your posts just called, and will get a replacement. Didn't give me any trouble at all when I asked for a replacement. However, the guy said he had no idea if I would get a new or a refurb... will call tomorrow and whine just in case.

Should. They sell it. They must guarantee it. Call their cust service. Your IMEI is the key.

mine came in the little white window box, no backplate, battery, or anything else. Maybe it's a refurbish...I don't know, however, it works perfectly and looks brand new.

Just like mine #2 (current). Looks and feels new. GPS jumps around when you are static? And have you used the samsung gps reset app thing?

Yup, that's how mine came. Manufactured in November and appears to be new in ever respect.

9th exchange, at the very least.

Hello everyone,
I need some advice or suggestions on what to do. The Mytouch 4g, as you all may know, has a lot of problems. I've done many exchanges now, and some of them were done back to back. The first few times, TMO was able to ship express for free, but now they are charging me $9.99 for regular ground shipping even though the phones that I receive are defective. I am very frustrated at this point and have been thinking about canceling all 4 of my lines with them and eating the $800 ETF. What do you guys think I should do?
You may be wondering why I have to exchange it so many times..
Unlike the fellow perfectionists that you guys are, I never exchanged a phone that had a bad screen or squeaking buttons. The first time I exchanged it was because it had two dead pixels, then the power button would no longer work, then there was a ton of dust under the screen to the point where I had trouble seeing the top left corner where my status/notification bar is, then I had wifi and reception problems, then I've had the phone either shut off or reboot on its own.
I've been running into many, many problems - and they are not always the same problem either. After the third phone, all they have been doing is sending out refurbished units that are 'pre-damaged' by the previous user. On top of that, I have to pay for shipping on each phone, plus the Zagg's invisible shield (it's about $23 with labor on installation) that I had on several of the replacement phones. After troubleshooting for hours on end with tech support, I noticed that my battery cover is loose since they had me reboot/remove battery so many times, I ended up buying the gel skin case from TMO yesterday so that the battery cover wouldn't fall off.
I would be glad to take any advice that you guys have at this point. Thank you.
Edit: By the way, I did not have any apps other than opera mini - didn't even update youtube and things like that.
The statistical likelihood of getting 9 defective devices in a row is astronomical. Truly. If you are being honest and these are all really manufacturing defects then you sir are the unluckiest ****er ever and you are never welcome to babysit my kids. I don't really have any advice except to say that if your next problem is software related, try rooting and see if that fixes it. Otherwise I would avoid crosswalks and commercial flight if at all possible. Damn dude. Unlucky...

They can offer to give you a different phone all together. Like the g2 or galaxy 4g. Just ask

Do this. Call tmobile and tell them the issue with your device. Have them do another warranty exchage, but, instead of getting it shipped, tell them that you really do not want to wait once more to receive another device shipped and that if you can go into a tmo store and pick up a warranty replacement. They shouldn't have a problem telling you yes. Have them call the store so they can tell them you will be going in to get a warranty replacement. This way for sure you wont get a refurbished device. You will be getting a brand new one out of the box. This is the way I did my warranty exchage. They even gave me an extra battery for free.

I agree with coupetastic-droid and also after your 5th replacement you should get a different phone if u want for ur replacement. Try for a g2 or even a g2x!

Yep, that courtesy ended with a new policy about 3-4 weeks ago and it can't be overridden.

TJ you crack me up. I actually went through this guys episode with a mytouch slide, 5 phones under warranty, but they never charged me a dime for shipping. The one and only issue i had with the Mytouch slide was dust under the screen. I can't remember if it was the 3rd or the 4th replacement i got in the mail, but that one came with dust in all four corners. Didn't even insert a SIM card in that phone just took it down to my local Tmobile store and the manager exchanged it for me. After the 5th replacement with dust i decided to sell it and replace it with a MT4G. Well it was all good for a week until my power button failed to work, 1st exchange. They made me pay the 9.99 shipping for that one. Receive the new phone and i notice the display sucks compared to my wife's MT4G. Instead of calling in to tmobile i drive down to the local Tmobile store and i show the manager my predicament ( mind you this is the same guy that was exchanging my Mytouch Slide). Nice guy orders me another MT4G, waived the shipping. 3rd phone arrives a few days later, display is washed out, but i decide to live with it. Figuring that if i exchange it again I'll get another one with the crappy display. F**K me if the power button doesn't work after two weeks. I go back to the Tmobile store and have another chat with the manager, orders me another MT4G and waives the shipping. Manager tells me, "You're the unluckiest man i've seen with a phone", and i said "yes, yes, I am." Last exchange was the charm, good screen, and the power button actually works. I honestly thought i was the only poor bastard that could be this unlucky with phones. I have to show my wife this post, so she doesn't think i'm the unluckiest man alive. You sir have just made my day. If you can i'd go to a local tmobile store and see what they can do for you. Best of luck.

First of all, nice 'Lude. I just picked up an 07 Civic Si Sedan on Saturday and I ****ing LOVE it!
2nd, are you running stock Sense or rooted? To be perfectly honest I've found the stock Sense to be much more buggy than the cm7 I've been running for the past 3 or 4 months.
My first phone had random reboots and such and a factory reset seemed to solve the issue, but I'm assuming they had you do that multiple times.
Even if the phone is fresh out of the box, do a factory reset before you use it. It might help, it did for me.
Otherwise check out cm7 or one of the Sense roms around here. Removing all the bloatware actually does wonders for stability. If you really want I can upload a nandroid of my own stock rom with the bloatware removed.
On my 3rd mt4g and I'm about ready to go back to iPhone most androids have to many hardware issues.

Thank you for your reply.
First of all, yeah.. my Lude is old news. Since then, I've switched to an S2k, but that got stolen. Now I'm in an 06 Evo.
Anyway, back on topic..
The phone is completely stock. This is the FIRST PHONE I've ever owned that I have kept stock - Why? Because I don't want to have to unroot it when I send it in for warranty repairs.

Unrooting is as simple as flashing pd15img.zip through hboot. Not that hard.
Definitely try a different rom. As I said I've found cm7 to be much more stable than stock.
Sorry about your car. I never fully got over the 95 GS-R I crashed back in 05. since then I've been driving an ls.

i got pretty bad luck with my phone. finally got a good one after like 9 exchanges and a month later the power button went out. i called them and they told me i couldnt exchange anymore cause i "had too many problems with the phone." so the rep told me that the only thing they could do left is to exchange my phone for a motorola charm.....i was like wtf why the heck would i want to downgrade my phone, which polly cost more then that piece of **** charm and it doesnt even run android...major downgrade.
Dude. That blows. Hard. I'm sorry to see that you're having so many problems with your phone and I'm glad I don't have the same luck as you. I got mine from eBay and it came in perfect condition. Never had dust under the screen, good screen, no faulty hardware, etc.
But in all seriousness, after 5 phones, I wouldn't keep it. I personally think that it's a great phone, but if I had to take it back 9 times, I'd try something else out. Ask if you can switch. It shouldn't cost you anything as long as the retail price is equivalent or lower than the MyTouch 4g, and if I'm not mistaken, it's one of the higher priced ones (rightfully, so). If you don't hate a keyboard, the G2 might be good for you, but I hear the hinge has problems and knowing your luck, the hinge would break apart upon first use. So maybe the Galaxy S 4g? I know Samsung has great hardware, even if their software is crap, as is their update schedules, but that is easily fixed with custom ROMs.
Either that, or wait and return it completely, if you're still within your return time and keep your upgrade for when the better phones come out, i.e HTC Sensation, etc, and just use something affordable off of eBay or Craigslist. Meh
Just my two cents. Sorry if it didn't help much, but I hope your luck gets better. :/
Update:
My luck has gotten worse. I received another replacement phone on April 15th. A week later, April 22nd, I noticed a dead pixel on my screen.
*Sigh* I have no idea what to do now.
You need to move on to a different device. I've never heard of anyone have so many problems with a device.

I called in and spoke to technical support. They asked me to bring the phone to a store so that they can fill out a request for warranty exchange form. However, their tone basically implied something like, "It's impossible that you are getting so many broken phones. We need to verify that your phone is really defective before we do another exchange."
I brought it to a store and the retail sales manager had no idea why technical support sent me there, and basically told me to go call customer service again. He did, however, notate that there were a few dead pixels on the screen and that there was no physical, nor was there water damage.
I then called retentions and the supervisor picks up (without any transferring either). I explained to her exactly what happened, and how technical support had sent me into the store. She told me that she has no idea why because they could have filled out the form for warranty exchange over the phone, just like the other exchanges that I have done so far.
She apologized for what happened and said that I qualify for a multiple exchange (sorry if I got the term wrong!). She said that the manufacturer would exchange my Mytouch 4g for a Motorola Charm..
I explained that it would be a MAJOR downgrade. She then submits the form for the exchange and told me that it would be shipped express free of charge.
So you getting another mt4g or the charm? I'm still teipping about them offering you a charm over a mt4g. They are nuts!

Another MyTouch4g.. Hopefully the 10th one's the charm!

Verizon tried to screw me out of my dinc2.

So...this is going to be a somewhat long post about how lucky I am to have acquired my Dinc 2 after a HUGE verizon horror story....I encourage others to post their stories as well so that we can see how Verizon tried to skip out on giving people their new phones.....
So I was on the fourms last week reading up on the Fascinate deciding whether to root it again (I unrooted it because of problems with CWM and flashing ROMs...but thats a different story for a different day.) I had OTA'ed to ED04 (not knowing about the missed call issue) and figured everything was fine. My girlfriend started complaining that I was always missing texts and calls from her and I told her it must have been her phone that was doing it but she wouldn't buy it. I didn't believe her until my work tried to call me to come in to cover someones shift and I got in trouble for not answering the call (which I never recieved).
So I was just casually browsing the forums last Monday (July 18th) when I saw that this was a common issue with the ED04 update and saw that an eligible replacement was a Droid Incredible 2. (I originally wanted that phone instead of the Fascinate but it was out of stock when I went to get it so I settled for the Fascinate.) So I followed what everyone said and called up Verizon. I got connected to a girl who was really nice and seemed to genuinely want to help with my problem. Now I explained the situation about the missed calls and she said that they would send out a new phone right away. What I didn't know is that the girl chose to send another Fascinate right then and there and she didn't even mention the replacement offer and then all of a sudden she says "okay the new fascinate should ship overnight....actually wait.....no sorry its going to take until Saturday to get there".....I quickly interupted and said "Wait....you sent out another Fascinate?" she said yes and I asked her about the offer for the Droid Incredible 2 and said "Oh....I'm not authorized to do that...you need to call tech support". Needless to say I was peed off. But anyways I got off the phone with her and got in contact with tech support. I told the guy everything that had happened so far and he told me "Yes. You are eligible to get a droid incredible 2. But the problem is I can't send it out because you had the Fascinate shipped to you. You have to wait until that is shipped to your house and then you have to mail it back and wait until we recieve it, then you have to call again and order the Incredible." He then quickly added "Or, when you get the phone you can bring it in to a Verizon store and they will be able to give you the Incredible and take the Fascinate for you". So i told him I would go into the store and he said that he would note on the account about my situation so that it would be clear in the store.
Needless to say the phone came Monday of this week (not Saturday like it was supposed to....it came USPS and not FedEx so it was delivered slower and they don't deliver on Sunday). I went into the Verizon store that day and explained the WHOLE situation and the lady there said I was eligible for the phone but that they couldn't give me the phone there and that it had to get shipped to me. So the lady said she could put the order through on her computer. She told me it would be shipped overnight and that I would have it the next day (Tuesday the 26th). Then she told me that I had to activate the new Fascinate they sent out to me (which I wasn't supposed to get in the first place) and use that phone for now and send my old one back through the mail (which made no sense whatsoever and she came up with some long drawn out excuse so I just went with it). So we activated the new phone and everything seemed great. Tuesday came and the package didn't come. Okay....must just be running late. Then yesterday it didn't come either. I walked up and down my street to make sure it didn't get delivered to the wrong house. So when I didn't see it I called Verizon to see if it was shipped (Oh btw....the lady at the Verizon store never gave me a tracking number for the package....stupid me.....). They said there was no order for a Dinc 2 and then I got forwarded to Tech support. The lady I got forwarded to was really nasty and didn't know what she was talking about. She said that my new phone came with an update to fix that problem and then I told her that she was wrong because I looked at my software when I go the phone and it was the same as my previous one and I was still missing calls and texts (it was here I realized after seeing the leaked ED05 here on XDA that they were stalling so they didn't have to give me a new phone ). When she knew that I wasn't clueless she tried to say that the package didn't get delivered because my bill wasn't payed for the phone yet (which wasn't due for another 7 days). So I argued with her about that and said that makes no sense because it wasn't due yet. Then she had me transfered to a Supervisor who was even more nasty and said that I WAS THE ONE who made a mistake because I ordered a phone without my balance being paid (WHICH WASN'T FREAKING DUE FOR ANOTHER 7 DAYS!!!!) and that I also hadn't sent the old phone back (which everyone who I talked to previously said I could ship back once I got the Incredible). So after a very long time he finally budged and said that they could send it but that they shouldn't because of my balance (which he kept persisting on...and I'm always on time with the bill and its always paid in the first place). So I got transfered back to the lady who put the order in and I made sure to get a tracking number for the phone. She then transfered me to another person who told me the procedure of sending my other phone back in with the accssessories that came with it because I'm getting new ones for my phone. Now they sent out the phone overnight and I got it today but I'm not reciving the accessories until tomorrow. Made it by the skin of my teeth...and thank god.
SUMMARY:
So in summary I just wanted to say that the phone call on Tuesday took me ONE HOUR AND 45 MINUTES ALTOGETHER!!!!!!
Verizon tried many tactics to make sure I didn't get my phone because they knew the update was supposed to come out and I'm really surprised that I didn't catch on sooner.
The way Verizon treats their "valued customers" is atrocious. I can't believe how much effort was used to try to defer me from getting a new phone that was offered for everyone just because they had an update in the works. Not that it surprises me...because I would expect it. But I think they went a little too far by trying to say that the situation was MY FAULT. What especially got me ticked was the fact that AFTER I showed them I wasn't just some person with wool over their eyes and that I would fall for the fact that the lady said "the phone was sent with the fixed update on it" (WHICH HADN'T BEEN RELEASED YET!!!!!)...they choose to say it was because my bill wasn't paid (which still wasn't due for 7 DAYS!!!!). Ridiculous !!! I would switch from Verizon in a heartbeat after this if I wasn't locked into a contract with them and if other companies had better deals. Maybe when the contracts up (still another year and a half...ugh) I will switch to someone a little better to their customer. Anyone else have a story for me??

JK! That really sucks though, I feel for you man. I have two fascinates on my account and they have been screwing up my mailing address only on the phones but not on the accessories! I was like WTF! I did however get my first Charge activated and ready to go. I am still waiting for the second replacement Charge to come in the mail as we speak. I find your assertion that they're stalling completely valid. I never had any issues talking to Verizon corporate over the phone, but the damn employees at the store tried giving me run around about how they can't order replacements from the store and stuff. And then they end up doing later...so I'm like WTF!
If you have any further trouble don't try to be nice to them. If at the store, just give them mean looks and if over the phone, just keep a stern voice like you wont take no for an answer LOL! Worked for me.

Yeah man no kidding!!! What I'm waiting for now is to get a bill for the Dinc 2 because I have to activate it tomorrow because the battery and charger won't arrive until then!!!! They will probably try to say "Oh. You should have known that the new update came out for your Fascinate and that we want you to send the replacement back and download the update". Sounds like something they would pull after what just happened to me .....hahaha

Sometimes that's the best way to deal with em. I've had more success with poor customer service by being stern and not backing down than with just being a ****. Absolutely. That pisses me off and I'm not even with verizon, and after reading that for good reason. Hate to hear you went through so much BS but glad you did get what was owed to you.

Verizon must have been getting alot of calls to switch phones. I wonder how many were trying to trade out even though they weren't having issues. How quickly word spreads.
Hope the update takes care of the missed call/text issues because I really like my Fascinate.

The issues were universal, so zero. Why is everyone trying to be a douche about this?
I never had a problem with missed calls

I've never really had a problem, that I noticed. The only missed calls I've had have been at my house, which gets terrible reception. But every phone my girlfriend and I have had, have had the same problem at my house.
If I were, I would certainly be taking advantage of the phones warranty.
I've never noticed anyone mentioning signal strength during missed calls. Has it occurred with full signal strength?

yes as i was driving by a cell tower yesterday lol
So I finally received the 2nd charge in the mail for my other fascinate on our account after clearing the address issues. Unlike my Charge, this Charge came in a retail box with a charger, 32gb sd card, back door, etc. My Charge came in the Verizon's typical replacement box, but it too looked brand new. Usually even on the certified refurbished models you can find signs of it actually being a used phone.
Two thumbs up to Verizon for replacing the defective fascinates. I haven't had a single missed call and the gps locks in quick.
I hope all of you resolve your issues with Verizon and get your replacements as well.
Our story is different but similar.
My family has 3 Fascinates and they were all missing calls, having volume control issues, wi-fi connection issues, battery drain issues, etc. I called Tech support last week and confirmed that I could get all 3 replaced but 2 of the phones were out of town so I had to wait to discuss it with the kids.
We finally got to a Verizon store to test the 3 phones offered on Tuesday night. We made some test calls and 2 out of 4 calls made to my phone *in the verizon store* failed to come through. Ridiculous. The call quality on the Fascinate was awful when we directly compared it to the other 3, no comparison. The Droid X2 really excelled there.
Anyway, we asked for the recall replacements and were told that they couldn't do it because the computer showed that we were out of warranty. Well, the phones haven't been OUT for a year, much less in my hands, so she knew the computer was wrong but couldn't fix it. Sent me home to call Tech and get them to override the system.
Called Tech. They said that my account showed 3 Fascinates with no warranties, but that was wrong as they SHOULD have warranties on them. The only way to fix it was to send me 3 new Fascinates. Then, once those were activated the computer should recognize that the new phones had warranties and I could trade those in. OK.
New phones came in this morning. Activated them all. Version ED04 shipping on them all but within 5 minutes the ED05 was pushed out to them all.
I should be thrilled that I can keep my Fascinate, but after testing the call quality in action and feeling like I was railroaded into this delay, I'm a little pissed off.
No one else had the "oh gee, you don't seem to be covered by a warranty, how strange" glitch happen to them, did they?
It took me 5 calls to CS and 2 trips to a Verizon Store to get my Charge replacement. Funny thing is that the first time I went to the VZW Store the rep told me that they had no stock of the X2, DI2, or the Charge. I then went to another store and the guy ordered me the Charge right away. So I was given the run around and lied to, not very nice imo. But I got my charge now, I'm happy.
I just received a replacement fascinate a week ago. This is the fourth one and the EDO5 update hasn't fixed anything it claims too. They have a note on my verizon account that if this one has problems that I'm eligible to recieve either an X2 or Inc2. But I've only had the new fascinate 2 days..
So my question is do you think it'll be safe to call even though I just received the fascinate??
Thanks

Yes I would call and make sure you act really pissed off (and that shouldn't be too hard...seeing as this is your fourth fascinate with the same problem). Say that you don't appreciate being taken advantage of and that you shouldn't have to go through four of the same exact phone for those idiots to realize the thing isin't going to work. One of the reasons I tried so hard to get my fascinate replaced is because Verizon screwed me in the past with replacement phones. I had to get the same phone 5 times and they all had the same problem on them and finally when I went to get the SIXTH phone my warranty was up. (How convenient for Verizon...). So I would say that too. That your sick of the horrible customer service and don't appreciate them trying to run out your warranty so you can't do anything about it.
Well I received my battery and charger today from Verizon so I finally got to activate my Incredible. I have to say it is a very very nice phone. The UI is pretty nice and it is an overall better package than the Fascinate imho. The reason I had to wait separately for the phone and charger is because verizon didn't have the stock HTC battery and charger so they had to give me an extended battery with the backing and a new charger for free. So needless to say I am very pleased and am very happy I don't have to deal with the Fascinate horror show any longer.
