[Q] About to get G2 (if you guys recomend it) - G2 and Desire Z General

I've been looking to get a new phone for a while now, but I've never wanted to pay a $400 price tag for an unlocked phone when my contract isn't up yet.
I've been seeing g2's for just above $200 though and I'm really about to get one.
but I'm a bit concerned, is there something wrong with the g2?
from what I hear, even though it's 800 mhz, it's super smooth and can be clocked up to 1.5.
I really don't want a phone that's going to be dated, that's my main concern.
Is the phone dying out? or is this $200 deal just good luck?
Is development on the phone good? (I'm pretty sure a perm-root was found a while ago if I'm not mistaken)
also: I'm gonna need it unlocked, but when I try to find a place where I can get an unlock code all that comes up is for the much older htc G2/Hero
Edit:
Also, how's the performance for things like gaming?

No there's nothing wrong with the G2. Great phone, but there are bigger and better things just around the corner. Also I'd look around more as they can be had for less than $200. Just a heads up, the G2 is being discontinued as it's officially at it's "end-of-life" phase. That aside, the 800 MhZ processor is smooth as butter and gaming is good with the Adreno 205 GPU. Not gonna stack up against the likes of the Sensation or G2X though. (Although the G2 is overall much more reliable than the latter) Dev support is great so in the end, if you can find a cheap one off-contract to hold you over until an upgrade is due, I'd say go for it.

As a owner from October 3rd, I can say that I'm quite happy with it... Considering it was a transition from a regular cellphone to a Android-powered cellphone. As of now, only the G2X and the Sensation have my attention, but I'm currently under contract and I'm still happy with the phone.. Heck, only as of recently did I root my phone simply because I wanted to disable some of the pre-loaded apps that I don't use. I'm pretty sure you will find plenty of great ROMs and kernals, so development is not an issue here IMO. All in all, I'm a happy camper with my G2 ^.^

yeah not to mention you wont have to pay a cent to unlock it if you root it via the gfree method you get perm root and sim unlocked ; )
we also got some of the best devs around, im already running an htc sensation rom on my device!

Just want to say that the G2's 800 MHz CPU has a newer Qualcomm chipset than the standard 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragons and performs MUCH better, even 200 MHz less clock frequency. CPU architecture and design is just as important, if not more than, as clock speed.

Thanks for the info. I don't see why they would discontinue it though, being one of the only phones with a keyboard.

I didn't know that was possible, thanks

Absolutely
I bought my g2 the exact day it came out and now i'm running a buttery smooth htc sense 3.0 rom. This phone isn't dying anytime soon and it has a hardware keyboard so i definitely recommend it !

I want to say G2 just the phone u need, great phone, great battery and very smooth, 800mhz not the problem it's better for battery. You can OC to 1,5-1,9Ghz, OMG O.O

I have the G2x and while the screen has more real estate; I am doubtful of its quality compared to the G2. The G2 feels hefty in the hand like you have a real phone and it always amazes me at a physical level around its quality. Combine this with what others have said regarding rooting, sim unlocking, and the new ROMs coming out and I think the phone is a great value.
I have two G2s actually. One runs CM7 nightly and the other now is running a recent MIUI build. I love these phones. Came from Nexus One and I love them as well.
I'm looking at the sensation 4g but I'm definitely not looking to buy right now. I want to see if HTC does OTA and open the bootloader and how the development starts occurring on it.
The G2 with its real keyboard is the best value I have found.

Actually I unlock it for free, I called tmo and they gave me the unlock code, currently in dominican republic using the orange network sim card.
T-Mobile G2 1.42 GHZ

Thank you all for the advice. I just ordered it earlier today (Yay, I can't wait).
but I'm really gonna need to learn more about the gfree method of rooting. I'm not on T-mobile, so there is absolutely no chance That I'll be able to get them to unlock it for me.
I haven't read this thread yet:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1055581 but if I follow it then I'll be unlocked as well as rooted, correct?

It's pretty much the same thing, but this is the most updated version of the rooting guide, and it is regularly maintained
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...sion#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
Normally I'd say all G2s don't need to be downgraded; you can start rooting right away (The Desire-Z devices need downgrading, which is the non-US version that comes with Sense UI). However some people who have recently received a replacement G2 had the Gingerbread update already on it, and that won't be able to be rooted with the same method..

If you want fast, easy, and safe.. I'd use this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
That is, unless your new G2 ships with Gingerbread 2.3 onboard already. (I've read some new G2s are shipping with the official update out of the box) Otherwise, the above method works great.

congrats mate.. and since now there's already ROM based on Sensation.. than u'll have G2/DZ with the taste of Sensation ... the overcloked G2 even can surpass (standard) Sensation (mine was around 2390..).. one which is lacked in G2 is only the amount of RAM which is 512... (and the screen size if that's matter for u)...
i rooted mine through this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...sion#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD (well... mine was DZ.. ).. have some FC after the root.. and then runs fine after a wipe through Clockworkmod... and now runs perfectly fine with custom rom ..

And any of these guide will unlock the Sim for me?
I'm going to need that. I've rooted many androids (mostly for other people) and I'm comfortable with adb, but never have I heard of being able to unlock it myself.

In the future, please search and view the stickies before creating a new thread. there is a stickied thread for G2/DZ Reviews where this question should have gone. Thank You.

Is myTouch Slide Dead?

Guys, i might not be a active poster in this forum, but i am an active reader [100+ hits per day minimum]. Being a n00b in android developement, it might sound kinda funny. But WHAT ARE THE DEVS DOING! HAVE THEY MOVED TO ANOTHER DEVICE? I dont think its already time for the myTouch slide to be outdated. It has a 600 MHz processor, 512 MB RAM and other specs that are not outdated yet. Companies are still releasing phones having less specs than this. I see other phone's forums full of roms, kernels and other stuff. But i have been watching myTouch slide developement forum from few days, but there have been no posts at all, not even a clue of what the developers are doing. I didn't mean to be rude, but just wanted to say that MYTOUCH SLIDE IS NOT DEAD YET! And i want to thanks all the devs for all the ROMS and mods for mytouch. I appreciate your work eugene_373, wesgarner , kingofyo1 etc. [dont mind if i didnt include your name....this goes to all the devs]. Guys i appreciate your work, but we should not let the mytouch slide to die.
P.S. i am willing to offer some disk space from my vps for android community. If any devs want to host their roms or other stuff there, please contact me.
Cheers !

By no means is it dead.
Dragons lie still in deathlike slumber until awakened to unleash their powerful presence upon the world of mortals yet again...aka no the slide isn't dead . Development has slowed a bit but that's mainly because there are a few key ROMs out that are being focused on. I'd rather have a selection of 3 or 4 good ROMs than dozens of crappy ones wouldn't you?
Edit: You might also want to change the title to "Is the myTouch Slide dead?" so people don't come here expecting to flame and mods don't move it without reading.
yea true...it is better to have few good roms than many bad....but it is even getting difficult to find few good roms, the only good one i have found is cyanogenmod. I will try ararays once it comes out.i hope it is great.

The MTS is pretty much dead outside of CM6 development, T-Mobile pretty much abandoned their Espresso 2.2 plans and not a whole lot of people purchased the Slide. Most who did traded it away for the HD2 or Vibrant.
What makes you say that? They never set a date to when they would release it... We really dont need anything from official froyo, besides wifi calling
thanks for the reply r0man, but in my view it is not dead yet, but i think that some developers are dead [no offence]. and arayray, can i give a suggestion for your new mod, i got the beta build somehow, everything is perfect [i think it is almost as stable as cyanogenmod]. But i think it lacks flash player. I know that every rom out there lacks it. But i have found a way to add the flash player in stock rom. Yes, but only thing needed is that we need to be able to use the sense's browser in our roms. then i have a flash apk file that is supported by the sense browser. a long time ago i had found a rom somewhere in the wild with a sense browser in stock android, and i tried the apk there, and it worked perfectly. please reply so that we can talk about this. i will be more than happy to help. and i can provide you the flash file. and i think the boot animation is a bit laggy. can you please fix it? everything else is AWESOME~!
Dude you got a good point there,I would also want to thank the devs for there hard work as well.

The myTouch 3G Slide software (Espresso) framework was completely ready for deployment in March of 2009. The fact that the device took yet another entire year to be released tells me that it is the red-headed step-child of T-Mobile and SHOULD have come out in 2009, NOT mid-2010. They will not release Froyo - all of you optimistic thinkers will continue to deny this and hope for the best, but the reality is that it was a failed device before it was even released.
lol man you reply like you have been working on tmobile as a developer for years.....how did u know that it was going to be released in 2009? and keep one thing in mind.... MYTOUCH IS NOT DEAD AT ALL!
Look at the cliq, yes they were promised 2.1 almost a year before they got it but they got it... Honestly how do you know their done with the update.

T-Mo announced a month or 2 ago that the Froyo2Slide OTA will be out in December. I'm guessing next week.
It can't be dead if roms are still being developed on it.
daniel, arayray, joker, others (you know who you are).....
are doing the same thing as other devs are doing on other phones.
And it's definitely much more alive than it was a couple months ago.
Froyo/Sense hybrid + some cool features...... = definitely not dead.
A big thanks to the devs/modders.
Until CM other Modders/Devs dont produce any roms then its dead. How would you consider this phone dead when you have CM support and a nightly everyday or so. This phone isnt dead

Not saying it absolutely won't happen, but I'll believe it when I see it.
The development for the Slide is much much slower yes, and I am definitely not a fan of the lack of kernel development for this phone. Most of the sense roms look and feel the same, in my opinion. None of the froyo sense ports work too well, most of them either kb lights or wifi is broken. The eclair ports are pretty good, but I still prefer cr_mod. Cm6 is fairly active, but honestly, it's kind of a boring ROM. It's great and fast, but when I had my g1 I loved more the ROMs that were cm roms, plus awesome theming and the devs own twists and performance tweaks. Why don't we have more of that? We have some themed cm6 roms from miguel and one other I am blanking out on, but they are based off of nightlies, most from october or earlier, before many issues were fixed or improvements made.
Honestly, it'd be cooler to have more than just cyanogenmod and sense roms, which is why I'm excited for arayraymod, but where I'd really like to see a development boost is in the kernel area. I'm stable to 844mhz, pretty good. But our kernel from dumfuq lacks things like the brainfuck scheduler, I think it's called at least, and of course, smartass cpu governor. If we see anything I would like to see smartass incorporated. At least an undervolt?
I know, I'm digressing, this isn't a request thread by any means. The Slide isn't dead I don't think but sometimes I can't help but compare our forums to pretty much any other android phone and see how our development is depressingly slow. At least it isn't totally dead yet. If that tmo froyo ota really does come out then it may give a needed boost, hopefully at least.

The thread starts off as your typical useless thread, but the more you read, the more possible it is that Froyo will be released. There are some independent accounts of what HTC and/or T-Mo said, but I'll say this now: if it doesn't come out by the end of December then it aint ever coming out.
I still think my previous statements about the Slide being heavily delayed and otherwise a failure (to T-Mo), are true. We'll see if T-Mo wants to hold up their end of the bargain on Froyo, however.
I think I'm up for a full upgrade in the next couple months. Come March, I'm planning on selling the Slide and getting something more top-of-the-line. I originally went with this phone because of the keyboard, but after having Swype and SwiftKey for a while, there's just no need. We got my wife a 4G yesterday and it's pretty sexy.

Flash: You are using the Flash Lite plugin that came with stock Espresso, most likely, as Flash 10.1 with hardware acceleration requires an ARMv7 processor where the Slide possesses an ARMv6.
Bootanimation: Change the speed in desc.txt.

Well, Motorola had already done the majority of the work involved in porting 2.1 to the Cliq before T-Mobile started dropping high-end phones. It would've be cost ineffective of them to just drop the project all together. I will bet you almost anything that the Cliq will not receive an official 2.2 OTA (even though there are some alpha unofficial ports).

Agreed.
I'm not trying to dash anyones hopes here, CM development activity was probably continue until it cannot without a newer kernel to base on, but the MTS community is small and is getting smaller. It has been an amazing trip, and I think we can all say we have met some awesome people here, but the Slide was essentially dead-on-arrival.
Two things, CM development is still going strong. He said he's got the .32 kernel booting just not with wifi (or wifi calling not sure which) so that's not really an issue at the moment and it should show up pretty soon. Also the MT3G fender has a 2.2 update, or at least a version. I helped someone with one put froyo on it so it might just be a bit of a tweaked port but I think it's official. He wasn't rooted and he didnt get a signature issue so thats what I'm basing my guess on.

[Q] upgrade to this or wait...?

I currently have a mytouch 3g 1.0 running themed froyo, should i give it up and upgrade to the mytouch 4g or wait for dual cored phones that are right around the corner?
Post your thoughts please.
that is hard to answer, yes there are always new things around the corner. There are also bugs that come with new things as well. I would say right now the MT4G is the best device at the moment. And I think it will have the specs to stay in the market for a while and will get Gingerbread 2.3. I think within 6 months we will be looking at some new stable dual core devices.

I agree, there's ALWAYS something new right around the corner. Even after dual core phones become stable.
That's just how technology companies work.
So with that being said, I saw the MT4G, watched a CRAP ton of videos on it and decided it was worth it.
I couldn't be happier with the phone. =P
Good luck on your decision.
Decisions are sometimes hard to make. I have the MT4G and the Vibrant and the Nexus One. The MT4G is a wonderful phone. Probably the best all around phone I have ever owned. Having said that I also find it very difficult and anxiety producing to work with( probably due to the fact that i am a nubie but trying hard to increase my knowledge,) and all the problems surrounding root. I tried installing a simple apk file and it soft bricked the MT4G. This has not happened to me (yet!) with the other two phones and I have rooted and flashed roms on both of them. At this point I wish I had sent the MT4G back during remorse period and waited for either Nexus S or whatever comes out this month or next. I am not deprecating the MT4G as it is Great I am just stating for my level of expertise or lack of it the phone is not right for me and what I want to do with it( which is flash roms etc) at this point( my fault not the phones) and also to learn and increase my knowledge so that I can contribute to the community instead of always just asking for help. This is just a long winded way of saying" What is it you want the phone to do and how will you use it." Once again the MT4G is an excellent device.
It will all depend on what you use the phone for. As a power-user; the MT4G will hold me over for quite some time. I highly recommend it...IMHO of course.
But even though it's 2nd gem snap, I have a feeling it will become the = of a 528mhz processor within 6 months due to tetra 2 and Orion, etc. I know all tech does this. So wait for those or upp?

This phone is a beast and very stable. There are way too many unknowns with the dual cores at this point. I also heard that gingerbread can't utilize dual cores completely so it might not even be until honeycomb comes out (to the carriers not when google releases it) that we even see dual core phones.
Besides if in 6 months theres a phone you want just ebay this one to help alleviate the cost.

Considering a desire z... few questions

I'm sick of the lack of options for the X10 so I want to go with a new phone. I had a g1 previously and really liked it, so I imagine ill be happy with its successor as well.
Now, I don't really wanna buy an unlocked one from ebay, so the only option is to grab one outright here in town. The issue is that it's a bell phone and I'm with Rogers. Once rooted/flashed with a different rom, will it still be carrier locked? If not, is that something i can do myself?
Secondly, do you like it? How is the performance? The phone I have now is running a 1ghz processor and I don't really like the idea of going to one 200mhz slower.

Uhhh yeah, what he said ^^^
Well, both of you seem to love it. This is a good sign... I'm going to be interested in running CM7 on it come the time of release. As far as kernels + ROM's go, I remember for flashing my G1 I had to do the ROM AND the kernel. I rooted/flashed my dad's Desire Z last week (which is why I'm considering the phone) and noticed I didn't need a kernel.
By the looks of things there's quite a variety out there, and a lot of them have some sort of OC mod... will any of those work with CyanogenMod, or are they ROM specific?
I've pretty much decided on this phone now, looking at benchmarks and what it's capable of; I'm really excited.
The G1 was a great phone, had one too, and the G2/Desire Z is an awesome upgrade from it.
After rooting/flashing a new rom it will NOT be unlocked, although there are ways to unlock it yourself, in the wiki.

For your second question, I love this phone as its fairly customisable and quick. Although it is 200mhz slower, don't fret as it is a second-gen processor, scorpion, and is underclocked for better battery life.
Even if it is underclocked to 800mhz, it runs as well, if not better as the first-gen processor, snapdragon.

I'm definitely going to overclock the CPU. I mean... the past 3 computers I've owned have had really high overclocks. This only makes sense.
Thanks for the link to the unlock method, it's really straight forward. I just don't have a SIM card for the carrier that it's coming on... I should still be able to do everything for the unlock without a SIM in the phone eh? lol

[Q] How is android on the HD2?

like is it easy to install custom roms? do i just use rom manager?, is there any problems? are there like any cons?
i also have an upgrade. So im either gonna buy an hd2 from craigslist and save the upgrade or get the g2x. any suggestions/tips?
you can only use the rom manager is you use clk
if you install CWM then you can just download the zip file and flast it without it being hooked up tothe pc

so theres no limitations? Its like it was meant to run android?
something are a little slower such as gps but the majority of things run well depending on the rom you are using
Oh okay, nicee. So, whats your opinion? Buy the g2x or buy this? i love the dual core g2x but hd2 can run sooo much!
Depends on what you want. To me you sound like you're only interested in performance so go and get the G2X. If you were interested in flashing and trying out all sorts of stuff then the HD2 would be a great choice.
I for one will never buy a another tegra SoC because of what nvidia's doing to the gaming world.
Anyways, why not a sensation or sgs2? Those are surely better than the G2X in performance, and everything else, but the sensation will come with a signed bootloader hacking it fully will come in about a years time, like all other locked bootloaders, while the sgs 2 comes unlocked.

i thought about the sensation and its gonna be 200 dollars where as im gonna get the g2x for 100 from radio shack. The sgs2 looks really good, but i cant trust the galaxy s series. Do you know when the sgs2 comes out?
The sgs2 already came out. And why don't you trust them? Updates? Well the international sgs2 will get updates fast like the international sgs. Problems? So far people say god works with a few responses saying otherwise. Battery is the same, let say good, little say bad.

Im in the US, it wasnt released yet. i dont like samsung really. I mean if it comes out reasonably soon for the US then i might just wait for it
If you wait for aT&t, verizon, t-mo, sprint to release their versions, you're going to also have to wait for them to release their updates, which is noticeably slower than samsung, and the reason as to why people complain samsung updates slow, even though it's not their fault.
If you use aT&t, you can get the international sgs 2 and it will work with 3g and their "4g". Unless you're waiting so as to renew your contract so as to get a better deal.
im tmobile and im only 17 so switching companies isnt really an option.
android works perfectly on HD2
Personally I'm waiting on the SGSII to drop on TMOUS. Until then the HD2 is all I need. If you can wait (might be couple months) that's the best phone. Rooted with a ROM already. By the time we get it.... it will be solid with ROMs.
Next option would be the Sensation, but it's ability to be rooted and ROM'd is still in question.
G2X has had issues and would worry me. I'm with Kailkti and say FU! Nvidia. I've been an Nvidia fanboy for a long time with PC gaming. No more. But the phone is more powerful than the HD2, better sound, maybe some better other things. Only played with it in the store.
HD2 I love and is a ROM machine. You can't go wrong with it.
If you plan on doing a 2 year commitment... I would spend the extra money on a newer device. SGSII if you can wait... Sensation if you can't.

Custom ROMs can be very easy yes. Just follow the directions exactly. Watch this to see how easy...
Getting back on point with your original question... I would buy the HD2 used and save the upgrade. The HD2 will keep you happy with everything except super high end gaming. Even then it plays most games. I run many cracked Gameloft games on it. It will keep you happy for months. It's what I did a couple of months ago while I wait for the SGSII.
Then either use your upgrade on the Sensation and sell it for profit or wait for the SGSII or another great device down the road.

Those simple words just saved my day, thank you
I am just another person thinking of HD2. I am a Rom-Lover, so HD2 is perfect for me, even perfect to me than perfection itself.
HD2 with Android is incredible. When I got the phone I wasn't sure I could be bothered to change but reading the guides on here and seeing how much you can customize Android and how well it works made me switch. Never looked back. It's amazing!
So, i bought the G2x and it was the best decision i've ever made. I LOVE ITT. I came from an evo shift and this is greatttttt

thining about getting the M

i have been eyeing the s3 for a while but have steered away from it due to build quality, and sheer size of the device.
i really like the smaller size of this phone, especially after seeing my girl with it for so long, and how convenient it has been for her. it seems to preform well even stock, as she is very timid towards rooting and romming.
my first question : would you guys suggest this phone?
i currently have a droid x2, and it has been interesting to say the least . i am looking for something dependable (which i know most motorola's are, even the dx2 was) as well as something that can perform. how is performance in your eyes?
one more thing, there is a successful method for unlocking the bootloader in the retail edition from what i have read..... is this the case? if so, do you guys see development for this device growing in the future? or does it seem to be dying down.?
thanks in advance, it seems like a pretty trusty little phone from what ive read.

Agreed, the RAZR M ticks all my boxes. Has been an amazing phone love it.
Performance wise, its great. And there is a kernel to get it to 1998 MHz if you root. Development has just kept growing really as stated before.

I still love the phone even if it were stock (which its not) and I ALWAYS long for an upgrade 6 months after getting a phone.I have NO desire to replace it. The size is perfect, build quality outstanding, battery life great, performance good, it has almost the latest OS which for an android phone that's not a nexus is about as good as it gets. The one reservation I had about it and all Motorola phones was the locked bootloader but with that cracked and AOSP CM10.1 (4.2.2) I'm in love!. I just bought my wife a Titanium (Best Buy only) M in like new (no evidence of use) condition with case and sd card off eBay for $250 and honestly I want hers too lol. Got mine in the same condition in white off of eBay as well but for $350 which then was a great price for a like new M.
The one drawback is the smallish partion for apps on the internal SD card and as far as I can tell no easy or reliable apps to SD (I did it with one app which one day borked, wiped and destroyed my micro sd). This kind of kills this phone if your a mega gamer (mulitple games with 500+mb data will quickly wipe out internal space).
there is a bootloader unlock on this now. which makes it even more exciting, and maybe will produce that much more development.
i think it is an all around great phone from all of the research ive done. i just want to make sure the same X2 experience doesnt happen again. lol
another HUGE thing is that this phone is not huge. just when you thought phones would turn into tablets, the razr M comes along. hopefully it starts a trend in making them small again.
thanks for all the responses guys, i will be joioning the ranks in about two weeks. :good:

keep in mind that most development is CDMA (VZW) based, but there are "fixes" to make them work on GSM carriers.

yeah i am vzw. as much as it pains me to say it.
Definitely recommend the M. The battery life for me has been great. I do keep bluetooth and GPS off all the time, but my wife keeps both on and her phone will still go a couple days without charge. i used mine throughout the day, and as well as as a hotspot while storm chasing and it will easily go the whole day for me.
Selectel Wireless
Anyone using this phone on PagePlus, Straight Talk, or Selectel Wireless? I am thinking of ditching my S3 and USCC. Nothing but problems with reception.
This is a midrange device. I cannot recommend it. The only reason I got this is because my nexus shattered when I dropped it. I hate the keyboards lag on this phone, and pretty much lag all around. But I like that it is splashproof...
Other than that, low res screen, no tv-out, weird storage, etc.... good phone for my wife, but she's rockin s4....won't trade
