Battery life in 2.3.3 compared to 2.3.2 - Xperia Play General

So, I read something about the update improving battery life.
Can anyone who had the update confirm this?
Is it a big difference?
I rooted my 2.3.2 and removed all the bloatware. Since then, my battery life has seen a good 20% increase, at the very least.
What I want to know is if the improvement in the update is as good as what I did, and if it's worth losing the ability to root without unlocking the bootloader.
EDIT: sorry it was a typo, I meant 2.3.2.
Corrected now
Sent from my R800a

I was stunned by the performance. Battery increase of at least 30% when compared to 3.2.2 (non rooted) to this

2.2.2? My Xplay came with 2.3.2. O__o
I would like to know if there's the same difference from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3, for updating or not.

My battery life seems the same now (on 2.3.3) as it was when i was rooted on 2.3.2 (minus the bloat) so theres been some improvement. The update fixed some other problems too like random lagg e.t.c i think it was worth it. The question is do you want to loose root?
I last charged my phone around 38 hours ago and still got 45% and that is with about 2 hours of browsing, about 3 hour of games, loads of apps usage a few phone calls and loads of texts. It just depends on how you use the phone e.t.c. When playing games non stop i would get about 7-8+ hours.

My root access has only been used to remove the bloatware. I don't mind losing it if I won't lose battery life

Well I'm on 2.3.2 and I don't like the battery life. I can make it all day if I don't use the phone. I didn't buy it to not use the dam thing. I can't wait for this update. It comes July 1st.

There is NO need for Juice Defender.
All you need to do is ROOT the phone, use Titanium Backup and freeze or uninstall all the crap thats included. Lately I've been very busy with work but I have still managed to use the phone as a phone, to browse and txt heavily. I charged my batter yesterday afternoon after a good 48 hours! This is my BEST phone to date (previously had Desire HD, Atrix, Nexus S, Nexus One, Captivate, Desire Z, iPhone 4)....

Its a trade off
I was rooted on 2.3.2 and removed bloat ware which sped up my phone and increased battery life by about 20%. I did however have lots of issues with wireless which is why I reluntantly did the upgrade.
I now have 30% extra battery than pre rooted 2.3.2 and no wireless issues however it runs like a dog at times due the bloat. Only 41 MB of Rom. Ram at 141MB.
If you dont have wireless isssues do not upgrade unless you are facebook fan. Presonally I cant stand all the facebook on every fcuking page. It slows down opening contacts.
I would wait until gingerbreak 1.3 comes out.
fyi, do not use juice defender. it is a peice of crap and slows your device. Just use titainium backup and freeze / move to sd all the bloat ware.

There is no way my phone would last 48 hours even if it idled the whole time.
I don’t really want to Root my phone unless it because absolutely necessary.
I like my warranty.

Rooting doesnt void your warranty well technically it voids the software warranty. But if you reinstalled the fw using seus they will never be able to tell it was rooted. So warranty is safe as long as your bootloader is locked and you reinstall the original unmodified fw for your phone before sending it in for repairs e.t.c.
Its strange, if i did nothing on my phone i would guess id get 50+ hours, cba to confirm tho lol . Hopefully when you get the 2.3.3 update it will improve battery useage, it did for me anyways.

I'm hoping it does also.
I removed a few things like the task killer.

nearly 7 hours playing fpse until i needed the charge
depend mostly on the apps

I have been avoiding the games because i don't want my phone to die before the day is done.

But the thing is you won't lose your warranty by rooting only if you unlock your bootloader, and I see your on an r800a so you most likely won't be able to unlock bootloader

!!!!Battery Saver Fix?

I'm running Beta 3 Rom rooted ROM. I accidentally hit fix permissions in ROM Manager app and now my battery is seriously lasting about 7 hours longer with the same usage and no tinkering. Also I'm getting less forced closes overall. Not sure why ... and I'm not sure if doing this is very dangerous and leaves me vulnerable going forward. Anyone know if this makes any sense? What does fix permissions do in Rom Manager? Is this a fluke? Try at your own risk ... I'm just not sure. If anyone knows of a possible explanation or is brave enough to try it ****AT POTENTIALLY GREAT RISK *** post your results here. BE CAREFUL ... BE CAREFUL ... BE CAREFUL.

How much total battery life were you getting before and after the fix?
I'm running attn1's rom and I get excellent battery life, like literally 1.5-2 full days of average use before it goes down to 0.

I believe nandroid is a full backup, almost like an image. So if you needed to recover it it should restore your phone to how it was when you ran nandroid.
When you restore a nandroid backup everything returns to exactly how it was when you did the backup, I.e.homescreen, unread texts, notifications, settings apps and all.

Which Rom manager did you use? I got one from the market and installed it. When I attempted to fix permissions, it did nothing. BTW my Aria is rooted and has sideload capabilities. Thanks.
assuming this does work anyone have a theory on why?
Quick question guys. How long does your phone take to fully charge? I've had my phone today from 8am to 7pm
Plugged it in and after being plugged in for about an hour and fourty min. It says it is at 100% but the light is still red. I did repair permissions and rebooted I'll see if it helps tomorrow.

How do you guys do the fix permissions thing? I have the liberated Rom and my battery only last like 7 hours
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
you have to use Rom Manager, download it from the market. you have to have clockwork recovery installed also. Now 7 hours for battery life, is that under heavy, moderate or light use? if thats under heavy use thats not bad at all. also depends on what widgets your using and how your phone syncs, updates weather etc. theres alot you can do to optimize battery life without the permission fix, if it even works?.

it depends on if im using my phone while its charging, it can take anywhere from 1-3 hours, or more if it gets hot and stops charging. and what percent did you start charging your phone at? from like 15% to a full charge without using my phone, itll take approximately about an hour and a half

This.
Confirm/deny? Theories?
General Battery tips.
Remember you are running a lithium ion battery, that means it is important to get a full charge on the first charge, and also charge it as often as possible. Letting it often get to the critical state can have long term negative effects on battery life. Such is the limit of our battery tech.
Optimize how many apps you have running, use advanced task killer etc. I also heavily recommend that you change how often your phone looks for updates, facebook notifications etc.
Turn gps on only when you need it.
Ditto for wireless.
I let my phone auto the brightness of the screen.
I generally get 2-3 days battery life, I talk for approx 1 hr a day. I watch videos/ play emulators for 1hr a day and I frequently text, update calendar information, and setup checklists.
As far as permissions go, chances are if you declined on many of them, some of your apps can no longer check for updates etc. So you are suddenly getting the battery life I get by making sure my apps are always dead unless I need them.
Also remember, many apps turn on automatically when you restart your phone, so run the app killer when you boot.
Good luck.

we all have our X10's and are happy with them (for the most part)... yet we suffer the horrible battery drain issue ... and while some have managed to squeeze an hour or two more out of the battery SE has taken the time -- mind you -- not to release an update that could make a difference but to make a video telling us what we already know:

What's your point from this Thread??
This video was produced while the X10 was running 1.6 OS and many were complaining about the battery life at the time

fine. 3 months old ... so what?.. i thought it was funny. i just bought my phone (AGAIN) after the first time i bought it when it had 1.6. and now i have the x10i with 2.1 (and dualbooting into 2.2).
and NO... your facts are very wrong. the galaxyS battery lasts MUCH MUCH longer. i have both devices in my pocket. my intentions were to hand the galaxyS to the wife and keep the SE/X10 ... side by side the galaxyS (sad to say) is much faster, better battery and yet still. i have installed froyo 2.2 and am dual booting on the X10. guess what? 2.2 while still alpha is faster/better and just better to use.
this goes to show what? SE just loads the phone with crap software that hinders the phone and makes it look bad.

Good to hear your Galaxy lasts more than your X10, but that's YOUR device. Many here have their X10 going for two days and more with constant usage.
Bottom of line is: there is no right or wrong here so don't take personal...

if you can point out some tips / links to how i can achieve this "2 day" mark you talk about i would be grateful.
Thanks!
If you went to developers section you can find a topic named "2.1 optimizer V002" by jerpelea

i've done the optimizer cleanup and jit. (steps 1 and 2). there were other stuff like TEST scripts but i skipped those.
Any other tips?
Try using normal wallpaper instead of live wallpaper, use wifi at home, install juice plotter and enable the widget to let you know the battery's estimated hours left
Un-install timescape since it uses a lot of process.
Oh and do not us auto killers as they kill your battery very fast
Un-install it if you still have it or at least disable the auto kill ( I rarely, almost never kill any app , unless uni suspect that it uses a lot of process )
Last but not least use your phone for more than three days as with each day you'll notice improved battery life, since android takes a bit time to adjust itself.
And that'd what I've done, so far I can take it up to 22 hours of constant usage, three hours of music, one hour playing games, twk hours browsing, email push, whatsapp and gtalk running non-stop. 3g always enabled with half an hour talking and over 100 sms.
If using my phone lightly it goes to 44 hours with 20% left

I haven't tried freezing the apps like timescape.. etc but as I understood from other members who tried freezing it did not help them too much
try backing up the apps you don't want and then un-install them.. However, one of the major battery drainers is timescape, but as I mentioned before you have to Freeze/Un-install it and all of its components...
I'll keep it simple here:
backup applications first
Uninstall/Freeze:
- Timescape Theme Sakura 1.0
- Timescape Theme Orange 1.0
- Timescape Theme Indiago 1.0
- Timescape Theme Green 1.0
- Timescape Theme Blue 1.0
- Timescape Provider 1.0
- Timescape Plug in Manager 1.0
- Timescape 1.0.0
- Creatouch 3.0.4
- Any other unnecessary applications that you don't use
Install:
- JIT ( Just-In-Time ) to make your device faster and less power consuming
- Juice plotter ( and add the widget to your screen to get more information on how long will your battery last )
DO NOT USE:
- Auto Task Killer ( it really drains a lot of your battery )
- JuiceDefender
- Any other battery saver applications
-----------------
you can of course use Task managers to kill any application that you think it uses a lot of processor, otherwise leave your ram uses whatever it needs. ( don't aim for more ram space because it's useless, this is not Windows )
if you did all that then you should be fine.... I know because I did all that and while I'm writing this post I'm listening to music using my X10 (Wifi on, Bluetooth connected to LiveView) for 4 hours now ( Un-plugged it at 100% ) and now it's at 83%
i had done most of your advises already including freezing ts and some other apps. i never use task killers. juice defender had been uninstalled as i found it wasnt useful to save juice. something i havent done is the installation of jit. will it be a key to improve the battery performance? where can i download it as it doesnt exist in the market.
my phone is fast and laggyless without rooting. the major perpose of rooting is to extend the battery life. i thought it would be helpful because the uninstallation or freezing the useless apps became possible. to my dissapointed, till now, i havent had the pleasure to enjoy the benefit.
a lot of x10 users repoered the better battery use after updating from 1.6-2.1, but mine and my wife's suffered the negative effect. now rooting the phone made it even worse.

Badly programmed widgets or apps are the usual causes of battery drain. Have you got anything that might be preventing your phone from sleeping.. Eg.seems to be a bug on handscent which absolutely
knackers the battery if you leave a message un read..
I've switched back to stock sms for the moment because of it.

I surely had it before that is why I started this infamous thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039696
No unusual drain here.
In fact this is the best battery efficiency out of any rom (except stock 2.1) I've used. Down to 64% after 24hrs with pretty low usage, which is subjective. To put it in perspective I rarely got past 24hours with typical usage on any 2.2 rom.

Well, it depends on personal preference , but for me bloatware is software that I will never use, or use someting else instead of the preinstalled one, for exaple : layer, mini diary, write and go, thinkfree office, stock audio player, swype, stock gallery app, samsung apps, touchwiz+widgets, live wallpapers, dual clock, etc.
Of course you need root, and titanium backup to remove, or you can delete the apk`s manually with root explorer, just don`t remove crucial stuff. You can search on google, or in the forums for a list of files, that can be safely removed.

39min on battery and it went down 2% with nothing running, only wifi on, screen off most of the time.
Doesn't look good for me. About to calibrate battery, but just letting you know.

For most it is amazing.
For me it has been so-so but I am letting it drain to calibrate now. Maybe it just looks like it's so-so.

Holy Crap this thing is fast

Just got my Atrix this morning..and am loving how blazing fast it really is. This thing has more horse power than any phone I have ever owned..
I'm coming from a tricked out Captivate OC/UV to 1.3 and it pales by comparison..
I'm not just talking benchmarks....but while watching full hd movies..I can pause and fast forward right to where I slide it without any hesitation at all...no pixelation..no stalls..no FC's...no lag at all...I love it..
I don't have it rooted yet..and no custom rom yet..have to wait out the return period first..just in case it goes bonkers..but I gotta say...anyone on the fence about getting it..you really need to look at one..
I can't wait till I get to oc/uv this one..just to see how much smoother it really can be..

Haha I remember you from the captivate forum anyway im loving my. How's your battery so far? When I got mine it would drain with in 3h now since I rooted etc it jumped to woopiing 16h with sync and data on the whole time.

Just ran across your post and thought I'd share my impressions on the battery. I just picked up my atrix last week after returning my infuse 4g. My battery is a beast; this morning I pulled it off the charger at 8am and now its 1:46am...I am still at 50%. I am a heavy user and I am definitely surprised how long the battery last me. I am also 100% stock running gingerbread. (Also have juice defender running). If I had my infuse still and pulled it off the charger at 8am it would hit the 50% mark by 12pm.

If you like it now, you are going to LOVE it after you take time to mod it.
But then again - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I've also got to chime in and say this is the best stock android battery experience I've ever had. Lasts all day with moderate usage, with over 60% when I go to bed at night. Even with heavy usage I'm not running low. I don't plug it in at work like I would my nexus one, and I only charge it in the car if I'm running navigation.

That's kinda wild. Many have complained about the big dropoff in battery life with Gingerbread compared to Froyo.
Interesting that a couple others here seem happy with battery life on GB too...

Well...considering I was getting fair life with my Captivate...this one just blows it out of the water...so I think I am getting pretty good stats so far...
I had 9 hours of showing this thing off...I watched 1/2 of Transformers in HD...made 5 phone calls..8 text messages..downloaded 8 programs..played 3 different games and surfed the internet for about 20 minutes..and I am at 60%...so...I guess it's way above average... ?
I'll charge it back up..and see if I get the same amount tonight at work...but I got to say...Moto did right on this one for me..and I am loving it...All the guys at work are miffed...only 2 said I should have held off for the SGSII...and I just laughed...
Mac
With all the complaining going on, it's always nice to see people that have everything working and working well.
I am personally extremely satisfied with my self modded stock 2.3.4. The only thing that kind of annoys me is occasional lag of Motoblur. I might just try the Touchwiz port posted somewhere around here while I wait for CM7 final.
Go and install CM7 beta - you'll **** your self with how fast it is.

I'd laugh too, the SGSII apparently has absolutely atrocious battery life. They put it up next to an Infuse 4G with similar usage and such and the Infuse 4G took the cake. I think the Infuse's battery life is horrid, if the SGSII is worse I'll stick with my 30+ hour Atrix!!
Great to hear you guys are enjoying your new Atrices! As for me, i got mine the first day it came out luckily since everyone was so hesitant on getting it! As for the battery life, when i first got it, i would get 16+ hours on heavy phone usage over 8+ hours and with continuous wifi and data when i wasn't in the house.
Only when i started messing around with it by flashing different psuedo-roms did i notice that the battery life was shortened dramatically, so heads up to you new guys, dont forget to wipe your battery stats everytime you flash a new rom!

Got an Infuse and loved the size of the screen.
Had it for a few weeks and thought the size began to become annoying for things like my car cradle, pocket, etc. but I thought it was neat.
Wife's upgrade become available and she didn't like the size of the Infuse, so I told her to get an Atrix cause of the power (was Infuse, Atrix or Inspire and the Atrix made the most sense).
We got the wife's phone on Thursday. I went home, got her a different launcher, set up the stuff she would like on her phone, etc. She loved it. So did I.
It made my Infuse feel like it was running in slow motion. I played with my wife's phone for literally 20-30 minutes setting it up for her.
The next day, as soon as I got off work, I took mine back (had a week left in my 30 days), got my Atrix and (after having to take it back and get a replacement as my first one rebooted constantly) haven't looked back.
I can't believe this thing.
I was talking with a couple guys at work that had them..they got them when they first come out...they had battery issues too..but..I have had other phones with bad batteries before...and just this year .and went through 2 on my Captivate and a new charger...so..If you got one that the battery doesn't last long on..go get a new battery for it..Many folks over look this..and blame custom roms or the phones themselves for bad battery life..Just a FYI for those who have had bad luck with them..
Mac
I recently bought a used Atrix and it had 2.3.4 already installed on it. Coming from a Captivate, I was immediately impressed with the blazing speed of the device. The first day, I ran the phone hard. After 14-hours it was down to about 20%. The display had been on for over 3-hours and I had more than 2-hours of phone calls.
Simply awesome. BL is unlocked and rooted but rom is stock.

Is my phone nomral? "Android OS" eats my battery

i have bought my GN last week, once i have got the phone, i immediately update it to KK1 (2.3.6, Hongkong version) via OTA.
i have read many posts on XDA that you guys with 2.3.6 are happy with the battery life, however, it is not the case on me.
as you can see, i have used for 5 hours after unplugging from full-charge, the battery drains from 100% to 65%, during this 5 hours, i had 10min phone call, took 2-3 pictures using build in camera, about 10 whatsapp messages
do you guys think it is reasonable?
what should i do to fix it?

These third party ROMs all seem to have one issue or another based on what I've read in the threads. Better to just root it and remove apps and tweak yourself.
I haven't had any trouble with Sheep Rom. I think the problem with some kernels is that the phone is not entering deep sleep. You could try installing setcpu and forcing it to 200Mhz while the screen is off.

Completely agree. Wish I never screwed mine up with Odin. Wish I could get back to my stock ron and just root, but my stock ron can't be found. I'm on the Hong Kong non modified ron now and am as close to being happy as I can get without selling and really buying.
I had problems with the sheep rom not showing apps in the market that worked and showed fine on the stock rom. Yeah yeah yeah, I know there was probably a fix but I'm not willing to spend all my time fixing silly **** that wouldn't be a problem.

I had the same problem with the market this morning, I uninstalled the market updates and the apps would install again.
You should install a official rom and silly **** like that wont happen. BTW my battery sucked on that sheep rom!
Can we be done with the rom battle now?

Haha yeah, I'm just trying to help the OP. I do have a backup of the stock rom, so I might take your advice and install.

I recommend starting with installing betterbatterystats to monitor wakelocks. That has identified my android os problems.
thanks guys for your suggestions on roms
i would prefer keep using the stock rom
will try to install betterbatterystats to monitor wakelocks, i will post the result after 1 day usage for our further investigation
Stock
I'm running stock for now, no root, and battery is pretty good. After installing juice defender ultimate, it's actually better than my GS2 battery.
rooted and using titanium to freeze a lot of the junk apps originally installed. Currently at 21 and 33 minutes with about 75% left. I never turn off wifi and have sync going all day. Browsing and a few voice calls. Not bad IMO

I would appreciate if you could you give us a list of those junk apps.
bunch to list (which I will do later) but go into running services. there should be a ton of crap (assuming your on stock) you can freeze. These are mostly stuff I would never use
Charged to 100% and left overnight...the drain was about 2% per hour...anyone can explain to me why..??...screenshots attached..
2% with wifi on is normal i think. just you off wifi then it will go < 1% /hr
You can use phone weaver to auto manage wifi. It will switch off at specific time and will switch on autometicaly at predefine time.
I manage to switch off data connection + wifi at 2am to 9am. and by bettery drain just 4% during this 7 hrs.

Hmm...but what about Android OS battery usage..its always high..??
wat is wrong with this, it showing you how much battery drained by OS. if your phone is workng then smthing shud use it na?
if your use is <1 %/hr, and that use, is with android OS mostly. it means not other than OS draining your battery.
Look to total battery draining/hr, and smthing (like ne service/application) over consuming battery, thn you have to worry for that..
And while using betterbatterystats...i saw in kernel wakelocks that vbus_present and deleted_wake_locks were on for a considerable amount of time...
Do they cause high android os use and drain battery..??
