Cellcom (Wi.) is rolling out official GB for its Galaxy S (Showcase) phone. It appears to be a CDMA phone:
http://www.cellcom.com/phone.html?navtype=business&phoneid=178
http://www.androidcentral.com/android-23-gingerbread-coming-cellcom-galaxy-s-and-milestone-x
Will this help us VZW Fascinate owners at all? Or more importantly our devs?
I'm guessing it won't be terribly helpful unless they release the source with that as well.
if its a cdma phone (im assuming its the same showcase as the cellsouth one) then with a few edits we can use it
but theres no timeline on that promise...hell as we all know verizon "promised" froyo at launch of the fascinate..and look how long that took...so vague promises dont mean much really

True, but I will give cellcom the benefit of the doubt, where I would not give it to VZW, as their track record has been poor. Time will tell

i find it highly doubtful that samsung makes an entire gb build for a regional carrier that ive never even heard and maybe sold 5-10k of a device...odds are if/when it came out it would be a modified build that they made for verizon or at least uscc
so they wouldnt get it unless we did...so they can say what they want, but until its out...its just talk
Wether or not they hold true to their promise did some checking and cellcom is definately CDMA. And the showcase is listed as i500.
So when they do drop it, which will more than likely be before verizon, we could gets some GB lovin.
I still think a few more months before we see anything.

What makes you so sure VZW doesn't already have the same Samsung GB code that Cellcom is basing their release off? VZW just needs a few months to bloat it up.

but honestly i would be shocked if a gb leak (let alone official ota) happened before the early fall at all
My money its on the fascinate getting gb around the same week as ice cream comes out. But how much better can it com rom? My battery is amazing and the phone screems. Unless team usage goes down im not seeing the big deal.

Do a little research. It's an i500 Showcase. So we're pretty much set when/if gingerbread drops for that phone.

If source was released (or leaked) for this, would that help you guys with CM7 at all? I feel like you guys will probably be done with CM7 anyways by the time that [might] happen, but I am under the impression that since it will be TW, it won't be of much use to the AOSP GB roms.

Another Fascinating post by my XDA app...
I feel like people don't really tend to read the actual source link.
"Android 2.3( Gingerbread) Update: We have been informed by Motorola that the Milestone X & by Samsung that the Galaxy S Showcase will both be getting an update to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). At this time there have not been testing timelines established, so we do not have any indication as to when the updates will be available."
In other words: Cellcom is merely saying Samsung told them there will, eventually, be a 2.3 upgrade for the Showcase. The carrier hasn't seen anything themselves -- which means we don't even know if it's been developed or not yet. This could mean there'll be an update in a month, or it could mean there'll be an update in 6 months.

I am not sure anyone indicated otherwise in this thread. VZW has yet to announce we will get GB officially, so it is good to know this phone will be, since we will be able to use it for VZW also, regardless of timeline.

It may help get anything kernel related fixed, but any of the problems are ROM related, then the source would be useless, just as all platform source releases have been pretty useless.

Figured id start a thread about it and people can chime in on what they know and what they want to know. Id like for someone to provide a link to what the up coming features are going to be and when its going to be released. I heard that its going to come out on monday the 6th and some of the features might include some more lime green and a market with music that can be purchased and also some sort of supported video chat. Any truth to this would be cool but I can't confirm anything. I know verizon usually comes out with some kind of sheet to tell users what will be included and I haven't found it yet so if anyone has information that'd be nice to share with the people here on xda.

I highly doubt it will be out tomorrow. And even if it is out tomorrow, it will be on the Nexus one. You should know by now all the updates come out to the Nexus phones first. Obviously it might not be too long after that for us to get it but we've gotta wait for Google's star child first.

yeah plus MOTO will want to make some crappy build with "ninja blur" which will take forever since they only care about the droid x so we'll have to wait a while unless you're rooted. Ports of stock 2.3 should probably be out sometime in the few weeks after it is released for el nexus uno
Not sure about sources and such but:

They announced its release this morning along with the Nexus S

So I'm going to make a guess that getting Gingerbread onto the Droid2 is going to require a new kernel? In and of itself, Gingerbread uses a newer kernel than Froyo, and it seems like there are some significant improvements under the hood that may require kernel support. I suppose this could be verified by comparing the source code between the two releases.
So, barring someone hacking eFuse, I would guess that we aren't going to see Froyo until Motorola decides to release it. Hopefully I'm wrong here...

I really don't think it'll take too long for Gingerbread to come out. We've been running 2.2 for a while now. Other phones don't even have Froyo yet. I know they probably have to make it Blur compatible, but I really don't think it'll take too long to get.

Im hearing that everyone thinks theres gonna be a minnimium requirement of 1ghz processor or better to run gingerbread. I believe this to not be true!!!!! This is from a google android employee!!!!! So stop assuming, if the aria dosent get the gingerbread update its because of manufacturers and the cell providers, they are the decision makers and my HTC Aria should be able to run it just fine and of course SET CPU or another CPU overclocker could help if needed. jus a matter of time now!!!!!

Someday the cell phone manufacturers will have control over their own products instead of the cell carriers. There is no reason why HTC should not be able to release 2.2 for those of us who choose not to use AT&T as their carrier. They have control because people just keep on buying those subsidized phones, when that stops (probably never) then HTC can release software when they feel like it, and not when AT&T says it's ok.
Cheers.
The whole "Apple" has AT&T in their pocket thing is BS. If anybody has someone in their pocket, its the other way around. You dont think that Steve Jobs wants to pocket money made from other carriers selling his product?
I dont think he realized how popular the iPhone was going to be. That will all change come February. No more contract!
Im not really upset that they havent rolled out Froyo to the public yet... I have had it for a while with CM. I mean, if Team Douche can roll out Froyo for the phone, than why cant a major corp put Froyo out?
It indeed does not make sense. We will probably get Gingerbread before Froyo rolls out for the Aria.
Sad as that may sound!
Sent from a borrowed SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You have to realize you can't just roll out an update all at once for every single device. To ensure it's n00b-friendly there has to be a lot of testing or else you'll get dumbasses who sue these days. AT&T has their hands tied with the iPhone, it's their flagship product at the moment, so devices like the Aria are down on the list in getting updates (because we all know AT&T has to inject the ROM full of ****-ware before it's ready right?).
Less bug in their Driver (Bluetooth, Audio, SOC, WiFi), Modem/Radio, TouchWiz 3, and Android Sources in Froyo will give Samsung a faster way to upgrade.
In the future, after Samsung releases Froyo, expect shorter time to upgrade the Epic to (name an android delicious snack).
And because Samsung has own System on a Chip (hummingbird), Samsung has to develop drivers for SOC, it take a long time to find bug and fixing them for future upgrade.

Silly question... is there a Galaxy-S specific to S. Korea? I *know* it wouldn't be the i9000, because S. Korea is 100% CDMA. I'd expect *that one* to have the most active open-source activity, just b/c that's the model Samsung's own developers would be using in real life.
S. Korea is kind of strange... to Americans & Europeans, it looks closed & proprietary. In reality, it has an *incredibly* active homebrew scene. The problem is, Korean doesn't commonly Romanize loanwords, so if you can't read Hangul writing, it looks more alien than even Chinese, and way more foreign than Japanese usually does. And reinforcing the isolation, it's a big country with domestic dev scene that's big enough to keep most Koreans totally happy... for them, there's not much value to make the trouble of digging through English forums worthwhile.
I know this because I have a Robotis Bioloid robot. Their English software & docs are almost *ancient* compared to the Korean ones. Seeing the gap was very eye-opening.
Anyway, my point is that the sourcecode to the CDMA-related .ko modules we need for Froyo & Gingerbread is probably floating around in public *right now* on a site like XDA in Korea. We just need to find it ;-)

Are they even releasing Froyo or are they jumping straight to Gingerbread? At this point, might as well just skip Froyo all together, but seems Samsung hasn't ironed out all the bugs in even Froyo yet.
There will probably be a new Samsung phone out with Gingerbread by the time they get Froyo out for the Epic. Heck they'll prob release the second gen Epic 4G before Froyo comes out.
Reminds me of my frustrating days as a Palm owner. At least we have devs and roms for our Epic.

yeah... old post... I didn't see the date until after I posted it. Crap on me.... I had a retarded moment. LOL
I'm confused about something.. (unless recent rumors are true), couldn't samsung just release the source *unofficially* and have developers work on it? And then when their team is ready working out their own stuff, they/sprint can push out their own update?
It would be easier to have patience with Samsung if they actually gave one date and stuck to it. Instead we get Tweets, false rumors, and other phones updating before we get anything. Never again with Samsung.

Looks like this is for unbranded galaxy s phones though. In the US it takes longer cause the carriers are modding the OS to add all their useless bloatware crappola an it's usually the carrier that pushes the updates not the manufacturer. it makes sense that the phone that's been out for a year gets it first....
since google released the 2.3 source code, the company has been doing nothing but preparing an update most likely. motorola however, needed to iron out kinks in their initial 2.2 release before they can consider developing a 2.3 OS, and then allowing carriers to modify it to your liking.
obviously you didn't think about what has to be done to come up with a polished 2.3 update before it can be released as an official OTA update. you really can't fault motorola for this not being out yet. it takes a lot of time, testing, and effort to release a finished product.
Raybond, I agree with everything you said, but its hard to cut Motorola any slack for this when the phone should have come with 2.3 in the first place. On top of that they lock the bootloader so we cant get 2.3 working on our own either....

well, the problem is that they probably started dev for the atrix's OS before 2.3 was released, so it would have been even more work, and probably would have caused delays in their release of the phone if they had shipped it with 2.3
I know locked bootloader is a massive drag for 3rd party dev, but you really can't fault moto for any decisions they've made with this phone other than that.

actually you're not skipping honeycomb....
honeycomb is a totally different series in Android OS, tablet-specific series to be precise (3.0)
So, gingerbread is 2.3, and ICS is 2.4. Also, rumour has it that ICS will have full dual-core support, so it would make logical sense for Moto to not waste any time with 2.3 and go straight for dev in 2.4

I saw the signup sheet too. It never hurts to waste a little time each day looking through these forums. I swear I saw a link for it. I looked at it and saw some sign up thingy on Motorola's website.
I received a tweet from GalaxySSupport about GB.
@johnnyplaid You have a Fascinate right John? We hope to have some news for you soon! ^Scot
I hope their idea of "soon" is similar to mine. Doubt it though. The EC09 leak seemed pretty stable except for SD card issues. Maybe it is close.
Might be EH09

True but you don't usually hear that from GalaxySSupport though. They usually say they can't speculate or don't have that information. When they finally started talking about Froyo, it was a week or 2 before it was released.

Samsung's support people told continuum users that the update was coming soon for Froyo, and it is still not officially released...
Wrong thread

Froyo vs GB, what's different and new? From using the ASOP GB, I don't see anything difference from usage
I don't think its really the update that matters its the source code. Gingerbread source code = alot more functionality in all GB roms. Correct me if I'm wrong?

If we get an official GB update then JT will likely be able to pull a lot of things from it to fix our issues on VGB/CM7/MIUI such as sensors, call audio, torch, ect... anything that doesn't work right or has issues, if it is fixed in an official release, can probably be fixed from the official release.
Problem is, anybody that has been around with this phone for a while is not even pretending to get their hopes up for an official release. If it ever comes (which is doubtful) then it likely won't be any time soon. Not saying there is no chance, but we willl all be pleasantly surprised if Samsung and Verizon actually released something when they said they would.
I've had this phone since the day it came out. I've followed the promises & rumors, most of which have been rumors that are spread as fact, quickly.
From what I've seen, whenever Samsung has talked about an update, it's because they've finished it and given it to Verizon for testing. Usually around the same time, someone on here or another site gets a leaked version (makes you wonder if they're leaked intentionally and we're used as beta testers). From what I understand, and I could be wrong, Froyo was rejected by Verizon a few times, delaying the update. I don't know if it was a problem with the software itself or the update package, or both. We all knew Froyo was coming because we already had earlier versions, I ran EB01 for quite awhile before ED01.
I don't have any reason to doubt we're getting GB. We've already seen a leaked version, EC09. I tried it and lost an SD card so I see why it wasn't "officially" released.
I could be wrong, but from past experience, if SamsungSSupport is saying they hope to have some news soon, I interpret it as they have given another GB version to Verizon that they hope to be or has been approved by Verizon. After the missed call issues, I expect Verizon to test a little more thorough this time.

Verizon rejected it because Samsung, the greedy jerks they are, wanted verizon to pay them a bunch of money for the "r&d" done to screw it up with touchwiz... if I remember right samsung was asking for way more than any other carriers usually do for updates and so verizon said no.

I heard that rumor too. If I recall, Samsung and Verizon both denied it.
Final version of Froyo was not the leaked ones.

Really. I must've missed that. Oh well......
CONSPIRACYCONSPIRACYCONSPIRACY
After the Froyo fiasco (anyone else contact their April fool?) and working 5+ years in a corporate multi-vendor environment, I find it impossible to pick sides in such situations. These inter-company hangups can usually be resolved via a quick call between executives; consumer demand has little influence in making such things happen.

Exactly. They don't care whether or not we want gingerbread, they have other phones that might make them more money to worry about.
Well, we know they are working on it as we've already seen a leaked version. Hope they release it soon.
Whatever happened to that EH09 leak that supposedly was out?

Apparently it was for the other cdma carriers. I'm keeping an eye out for a ec09 and eh09 merge though.
