I am considering getting a Samsung Vibrant these days. There is one thing that bother me a lot.
I am a student from China. And I am getting a prepaid SIM from T-mobile without any kind of plan right now for the price reason.
I was wondering if I got a unlocked Samsung Vibrant from eBay and use it on the T-mobile network, do I have to pay for the data plan?
The thing is I owned a AT&T Fuze before and everything works fine on the T-mobile network except for the 3G. That's okay for me cuz I don't use 3G anyway. But there is one time that my friend who is on AT&T network borrow my Fuze for couple days, and AT&T just added the data plan for it automatically. My friend try to call the staff in AT&T and they said that since HTC Fuze is a smart phone from AT&T, it require a data plan so he cannot cancel it. And they can tell when he insert the SIM card and AT&T will get the IMEI from him automatically.
I just wondering will the same thing happen in T-mobile? 30$/month is way to much for me.
BTW, there is another question for you guys. There is a lot of unlocked Galaxy S on eBay, which is nice. I was wondering how they get it unlocked? Can I get them unlocked right in the "carrier shop"? Or there is other ways that I can get the unlocked code?
Thx you guys anyway for answering these questions. BIG HAPPY FACE
You might have to spoof the IMEI, you're in the same boat as my friend. He wants to use his old Sidekick plan with the phone but since's it's not a Sidekick he can't use the data at all because they know he's using a smart phone. Discussing IMEI's is not usually allowed on xda because it's illegal in some countries. I think that's your only solution though.
Wait a few months until the phone is more popular and you'll be able to easily find ways to spoof the IMEI. So far I have found none.
you have to have the android web spoofed or not. Without it TMO will lock you out of the market and mms

as long as you use t mobile prepaid, you won't be charged for a data plan.
Why do you want to buy those expensive vibrants from ebay? I'd rather buy it from tmobile with 2 year contract, then cancel the plan and pay the ETF.
You can try to ask a t mobile online csr for the unlock code. Just tell him you will travel outside of us.

He said he is a student from china so I assume he does not have a SS# and without one he cannot sign up for a contract.
The best thing you can do OP is buy a Galaxy S i9000 off ebay. Tmobile only has the IMEI for the vibrants. That way you can pop your sim into the international version and they wont know.
Or get a sim card from mysimplemobile.com $60 a month for unlimited everything and it uses tmobile service. That is what I switched to and it works with my vibrant without an unlock.

Yup. You are right. I don't have the SSN right now so it's difficult for me to sign a contract.
The international version which is the i9000 is not bad. But I notice the price for the international version are significantly more expensive than the vibrant, for like 100-200$.
Anyway, thx for the suggestions.

So I might try to figure out another way to make it happen. lol
Im using the vibrant on tmo after upgrade. you can go online and remove the service. I paid for one month and canceled. you just change the type of phone to one not requiring android data plan ie a non android phone and it will let you remove it. I'm using it purely on wifi. just remember you will need it unlocked or w/ 3g to activate it initially or after wipe.

Ahh, Hmmm I paid the full 500 and today is the last day I can return mine. How much was the termination fee out of curiosity?
Another question, I have been using mine prepaid for almost a month now and TMO hasn't given me any trouble with it. (Aside from the reps in the store when I went to buy it).
Do you think I should bother to spoof my IMEI? Is that something that can get a fellow into trouble in this paranoid new world?
From what I've read everywhere else, it seems that TMO needs your business and won't give you any trouble using a prepaid sim in the phone. Whose to say that won't change in the future though.

You can usually get a contract from T-mob with your passport and your F1 student visa (assuming you're on a F1). You'll have to wait for about an hour in order for them to get approval from headquarters, but it works fine. Got my Vibrant that way, and while the charges are high at least you get unlimited data (as in really unlimited), so watching videos, listening to pandora and all that is a non-brainer..

That's the thing I don't understand. I paid $199 for my Vibrant on a 2-year contract. I have a $200 ETF, which means that I can cancel, and get the phone for $400. For a non-contract, I would have paid the full $500.
So what one can do is use the Even More for one month (which is +$10 from the Even More Plus). Then cancel, pay the ETF, and move to the same Even More Plus plan. Which would mean you would get no contract for $400.
Am I missing something?

is this really possible? amazon currently has the vibrant for $0.01 with a new contract. so in theory, one could sign a new contract, cancel and pay the ETF of $200, and get the phone for $200.01?? then sign up for an even more plus plan with no contract? (i also thought EM was $20/month more than EM+)
any input would be appreciated. this sounds too good to be true
You can buy a Vibrant and use it on prepaid you are just going to pay $500 for the phone. T-Mobile doesn't care they wont and can't charge you extra.
I would recommend checking out flexpay, you can get a monthly plan and get data if you want it. If not go with prepaid $15 a month gives you unlimited SMS and $0.10 a minute and just use wifi when you need data.
One last thing is do not recommend imei spoofing as its illegal here.

If you cancel with amazon within 6 months you pay an added 250$ ETF to them. So it would be 450$ all day.
I got mine from costco for $99 and canceled for 200$ after ETF. So $300 total. You also get a free cheap case car charger and bluetooth from them. Oh and no activation fee.

nice. i'll look into something like this. i wonder if best buy / radioshack / car toys also have ETF fees of their own... (no costco membership for me)
I am kinda confused by this.
So I am in a stick situation here.
My parents have a family plan and I bought a Vibrant adding onto their Even More plan, which requires the $5 add a line and also $30 data plan. But I kinda think I don't really need data plan/3G cuz I am mostly home and don't quite use 3G unless I am not home, which isn't too often. $30 is a little money wasting, so I was thinking of just getting my phone without contract by paying $500 and just adding to my parents' Even More plan without data plan to save money.
But since I got my phone from Costco for $200 (when did this $99 deal start? I got mine a week ago...), does that mean I can just cancel and save money instead?
Important question though: Is it really true that there is no Android Market access without Tmo smartphone data plan? Why is this so? If so, is there any way of my getting away with it in my case?
Thanks,
FYI, if you have an F1 visa or any student visa you can do a contact with T-Mobile with no deposit and no ss#. This is something relatively new to t-mo. Just go to any corporate store location and they should be able to set it up for you. It takes about 45 minutes to process. That is the only down side.

I don't have a data plan, and I can access the Android Market just fine via WiFi. With Wifi at home and at work and most every place in between, the data plan is really pointless for me
I was just checking up on Engadget and saw this article. Hope this was the small push you needed to get a G2
The cheapest before was $50 with contract but now it's Free!
http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/18/t-mobile-g2-now-free-on-contract-android-buyers-have-never-had/
Doesnt apply if you have a no contract plan (The extra line that is)
I had been using a myTouch Slide that was given to me way back in April...so my G1 contract obviously ran out a few months ago. The second I saw this promotion, I jumped on it. Couldn't be more stoked.
Just ordered one of these so expect me to start patrolling these forums in the next few day.( I'm not a noob though)

Please be aware that getting yourself into a contract causes you to end up with a service plan far in excess of your actual use, and NO OPTION TO CHANGE IT FOR THE DURATION. The result of this is that you end up spending THOUSANDS extra over the term of the contract than you would by just paying up full price for the phone in the beginning.
DON'T BE STUPID!!!! CONTRACTS ARE THE RAPE AND TORTURE OF PUPPIES!

How is it spending "thousands" more, if you already have a plan with the $20 preferred android plan for your existing phone?
If you change nothing on your plan when you take the free upgrade, in essence, the phone *IS* free, you just agree to keep service for 24 months, and if you hate the phone and or said service after 30 days, CANCEL, pay the $250 ETF and sell the phone and recoup your losses. I don't see how "Thousands" of extra dollars come into effect here when most people already have a plan they like with the $20 preferred data plan. I know my grandfathered plan with all the free features is much cheaper than ANYTHING a EM+ can EVER offer me.

Yes, wifi eats out of your bucket unless you have the free grandfathered [email protected] UMA plan on your line, then all wifi calls are free. If you have a EM/EM+ plan you can't get that feature added. Old plans still have a 50/50 shot of having a loyalty rep add the SOC.
Ok. Rep didn't know what she was talking about.

Woot recently switched from the nexus s back to g2 and I love it. Saved me $50! Now I save another $150? Man this is awesome! Time to spend the savings on accessories ie dock and larger batt.
Jumped on this when I got to work this morning. Upgrade was 50 bucks, but comes with 50 dollar mail in rebate. Signed new 2 year, but didn't change my plan from my original G1 plan + some discounts I have had.
I've been running Gingerbread on my HD2 but this free G2 has me interested. I've been lurking on the G2 forums trying to figure out the current state of G2 developement. Still not decided if I want to pull the trigger or not. I really love the form factor of my HD2.
just bit the bullet and got one. have a n1 with a g1 plan for a year now and didnt have to change my plan but i did anyway casue i want the 4G's. only a extra $5/mo for it. yes, extra 2 years but they are cheaper then the rest of the carriers, and i dont want to pay $500 for a phone again (got my n1 off cl for that price w/xtra battery). rather buy a HD projector. coming from legacy myfav5 300 anytime minute plan with android data/messaging unlimited plan to the Unlimited 4G for $20/mo and 1500 anytime and unlimited text for $60/mo. and no extra premium data charges. go magenta!

Just to let yall know, if you are renewing your 2 year contract then you still have to pay $50 up front, you get back the $50 with a $50 mail in rebate which in time, makes it free. Oh and this offer is on the web only, not in stores.
I was going to get my G2 this weekend at the store because Friday is my payday but the offer ends on the 20th so I think I'll bite the bullet and order it tonight online and hope to receive it by Friday.

My ETA when i ordered and got my confirmation email with standard ups shipping was Friday, but when i checked on the site later in the day it was pushed to the 25th, i guess they're selling a bunch, eh?
The LapDock requires an additional purchase of a tethering plan, which is a complete scam! The LapDock does not function at all UNLESS the phone is connected, essentially making this $400+ piece of **** nothing more than a DUMB TERMINAL. I asked them why they require a tethering plan when the machine itself does not work without the phone and serves no other purpose than being an alternative HID to the touch screen, and was merely shown a piece of paper saying the LapDock requires the purchase of a tethering plan. What a pile of fresh excrement.
The sales rep thanked me after I purchased the Atrix (sans LapDock) for explaining it in a way he understood better (and even said he wouldn't purchase it). You're better off getting the multimedia connection that comes with a mouse, keyboard, and docking station and just using that. No tethering required.
I got my Lapdock without a tethering plan and use it all the time; there's several threads on here how to do it. It only requires you to get tethering if you get it as part of the $100 instant rebate, $100 mail-in rebate through AT&T. Sounds like you were just misinformed. AT&T will sell you the dock without a tethering plan AT RETAIL COST. If you want the discount, you have to sign up for tethering to get it. I don't really see why you're so upset about this.
I can't believe you said that. There are so many posts addressing to that issue.
I'm using the laptop dock without a tether plan too, though I'm still a little too nervous to change my apn settings so I just don't use the full fledge firefox when using my data connection, just use skyfire or dolphinHD instead. works great.

The crud thing about getting the dock without the tethering plan at retail cost is that the device in itself is definitely worth even close to $500. It's a glorified shell that has a screen, keyboard and battery. If the price drops to something reasonable, I'd say under a netbook price, then I would consider buying it outright. Until then, it is still a rip off, tethering plan or not.
... People seem to be forgetting that the tethering plan is not under contract? In other words, sign up for the tethering plan, get your $100 back immediately and your $100 MIR, then drop the tethering part of your data plan. Or, if you have access to AT&T Premier, sign up for the tethering plan, get your $200 back immediately, and drop the tethering part of your data plan (yay not having the MIR!).

That in particular? Not yet. I can definitely tell you that I changed my data plan a couple of months ago, and it had no affect whatsoever on my contract, though (which is set to expire in 12/11).
changing the data feature makes no change to the contract or the upgrade date.
change it if you want, att won't mess with you. I changed back fro tethering to 2gb and I am fine.

Yeah but this only works with new contracts or upgrades. If I want to buy the dock at those prices I need to sign up for contract or upgrade. I can't just change my plan to tethering and I'll get special pricing.

Yea.... but last i checked, doing so means that if you still have an unlimited data plan, you would not be able to get it back if you follow your procedure. Pretty sure if you voluntarily change your data package to a tethering package, you lose your ability to switch back to the unlimited.
I am sorry that I had to revive this thread.
I have AT&T premier and one offer states that I will get the Atrix/Lapdock bundle for $300, but this requires a $45 dollar tethering plan. So, if I get the tethering plan and the bundle for a discounted price, then quit the tethering plan in favor of a 2GB plan, I will not have to pay the $45?
Also, another offer states that accessories are 50% off. Will this offer work on the refurbished Lapdock that is now $175?
Doubt it. Most offers excluded the lapdock. A couple have worked but it was priced higher then also. Go through the checkout process minus the last that actually makes the purchase go through and the price should tell you.
Sent from the coolest voided warranty phone ever.
The offer just says accessories. It has no restrictions, so can I fight for a lower price?
You could try calling one of the stores, but I had no luck a few months ago using AT&T Premier for the full priced laptop dock. I called a few stores, tried their main phone line and no luck. The 25% off coupon worked for me

If you read the fine print of the offer the offer is void for Apple products, netbooks, tablets, prepaid cards, photo frame, lapdock for atrix. I just got a refurbed dock on Friday and the code didn't apply, but at least they aren't making you sign up for tethering plan
So, because the 25% discount is not available anymore, there is no possible way of getting a refurbished lapdock for less than $175?
As far as I can see, they just say further restrictions do apply, but do not explicitly state them. Where does it explicitly state them?
In a few months they will be sold at fire sale prices. Nobody is buying them in any significant volume. Then after that of course they will be valuable on ebay as they aren't being made anymore. lol
here in Oz, they tried to sell the Samsung Galaxy Tab at prices above that of entry level ipad. no more than 6 months after release our equivalent of Verizon or AT&T fire sales their entire stock at close fo 1/3rd of what they were originally asking for.
Yeah the guy who priced them should be slapped repeatedly
so im in bit of dilema... I had a iPad (yay its gone) and i want to buy a Xoom. I frequently used my iPad for school but now that i dont have it im realizing how much i really needed it @[email protected]
So my problem, will stores (bestbuy in particular) have the Xoom on Sunday (3/27)? Or should i just buy the normal one tomorrow? I seriously need a tab ASAP and i dont want to wait if i dont have to.
it depends on how much you plan on using it me personally I got the 3g one since I like having internet everywhere I go without worrying about wifi
Just buy the regular one from best buy for full retail and then return it when wifi comes out. I believe you have 14 days return. Double check before you buy so you can't cuss me out ;-)

yes its 14 days, but they charge a restocking fee in the neighborhood of $50-$70.
The WiFi comes out in 5 days, just wait and save yourself $200... Just call your local store and ask, they should be on sale on the 27th. If not, you can pre-order on amazon and you should have it by monday if not Saturday (they sometimes ship it 1 day early to ensure you get it in time for launch).
ill call tomorrow and ask. like i said i need it ASAP, so no later than next monday 3/28.

I wouldn't mind paying the monthly fee. It is the added $200 bucks premium I dont have the stomach for. If it was $599 for 3G, I'll pick one up and do month to month non-contract. Works for me.
I got mine with the 2yr contract. One thing to think about is you can get the 1gb/m plan and upgrade/downgrade at anytime. so 20bucks per month , net anywhere, 200 bucks off the $800 price tag. worth it to me. extra 10 bucks gets you the protection plan incase you break it.
i opt for 3G model.
With the iPad I can see not having the need of 3G and WIFI version is perfectly fine. But with Xoom, I am really debating. The whole benefit of Honeycomb is the widget functionality. A lot of the widget relies on having internet to update (i.e.: news, weather, etc.,). So not having 3G, that really going to hamp down the true experience of XOOM isn't it?
But then again, paying the premium of $200.00 just to have the 3G benefit sucks...*sigh*...decision decision.

I thought once you sign the 2 yrs contract, let say at $50/mo, you can't downgrade it....

I think its just like any phone contract, you can upgrade/downgrade your minutes/texts/data etc. at any time to apply to the next month.
I bought the 3G/LTE (upgradable) version, but I bought it off contract. Verizons data plans are a joke, $20 for 1 GB of data, no unlimited option? That is insulting, considering that the LTE could chew through that in a day. I hate the way the wireless ISP data plans are going. Looking a my sprint bills I use around 10 GB per month.
I just use my EVO 4g and tether it to my Xoom, my Xoom is in airplane mode all the time, which saves on the battery. Also on a side note, one overlooked feature new to honeycomb ( I think its new, my evo with can't do it) you can use bluetooth while in airplane mode without having to toggle airplane mode. Nice touch none of the reviewers mention.

1 day? you could get through 1gb on LTE in a couple hours lol.
I agree it is very insulting how much they think they can charge for data lol. its ridiculous.

Heck I blow 1GB on my FIOS in an hour...haahah
I blew mine on day 2 cuz i used wifi on day 1. Then i cancel on day 2. When the bill came home, they dont say how much i owed them. So i took it to verizon store, they said i had 3 bucks of data left Funny thing is, I was using the minimum amount compare to how much i use on my nexus.
Not sure if this is a deal or not but I purchased a Nexus at Bestbuy yesterday for $99.00. I upgraded one of my phones. The local VZW store had them for $149.00 but they did not have any in stock. This is the second phone I've purchased at Bestbuy and I really like dealing with them. Of course, I don't have my unlimited data plan anymore but that was bound to happen sooner or later. I'll just have to watch my data usage now.
PS. I really like this phone. lol.
bestbuy has good price however i would complain to your carriers customer care i wouldnt give up my unlimited without a fight
I'm assuming this is $99 with a new contract?
Not considered a great deal if you were required to sign a contract for it.
cool :highfive::highfive:
yeah it's $99 with a new contract.
wah wah wahhhhhh.
Try Newegg, its free as a new customer or $49 as an upgrade. They are also throwing in a free dock and $25 gift card.
This might sound like a crazy question but do you need a 4G plan to have a 4G phone?
I got grandfathered into the unlimited 3G plan on Verizon and was just wondering like what's stopping me from buying a Nexus and activating it myself?

From what I understand if you try to upgrade now with a grandfathered unlimited plan they will force you to switch to a metered plan. The only away around it is to buy a non subsidized device at full price.

Alright, cool. That was my plan (paying full price) I was just afraid that after I activated it they'd make me switch to a 4G plan or whatever but I don't plan on going through them to get a new phone anyway
There were never separate 4G plans, its just that around the time most phones started coming with 4G, Verizon was making the switch to metered data. You could buy the HTC Thunderbolt before unlimited data for new customers ended and it was a 4G phone.
Basically if you want an "upgrade" for Verizon. You have to pay full retail price or buy it from someone,if you wanna keep your unlimited data as of the 29th of June. But I heard Verizon will eventually kick everybody off the unlimited plan in a year or two.

Yeah, I'd return it and get your unlimited back. Then call up VZW and ask to keep your plan. I did the sa,me thing with AT&T and they honored my unlimited plan.
Just thought i would pop in and say if you can find a Walmart with them in stock, last time I was at work they were .97¢ for upgrade or new line. So 99$ isn't a great deal
