Not sure if this is a deal or not but I purchased a Nexus at Bestbuy yesterday for $99.00. I upgraded one of my phones. The local VZW store had them for $149.00 but they did not have any in stock. This is the second phone I've purchased at Bestbuy and I really like dealing with them. Of course, I don't have my unlimited data plan anymore but that was bound to happen sooner or later. I'll just have to watch my data usage now.
PS. I really like this phone. lol.
bestbuy has good price however i would complain to your carriers customer care i wouldnt give up my unlimited without a fight
I'm assuming this is $99 with a new contract?
Not considered a great deal if you were required to sign a contract for it.
cool :highfive::highfive:
yeah it's $99 with a new contract.
wah wah wahhhhhh.
Try Newegg, its free as a new customer or $49 as an upgrade. They are also throwing in a free dock and $25 gift card.
This might sound like a crazy question but do you need a 4G plan to have a 4G phone?
I got grandfathered into the unlimited 3G plan on Verizon and was just wondering like what's stopping me from buying a Nexus and activating it myself?

From what I understand if you try to upgrade now with a grandfathered unlimited plan they will force you to switch to a metered plan. The only away around it is to buy a non subsidized device at full price.

Alright, cool. That was my plan (paying full price) I was just afraid that after I activated it they'd make me switch to a 4G plan or whatever but I don't plan on going through them to get a new phone anyway
There were never separate 4G plans, its just that around the time most phones started coming with 4G, Verizon was making the switch to metered data. You could buy the HTC Thunderbolt before unlimited data for new customers ended and it was a 4G phone.
Basically if you want an "upgrade" for Verizon. You have to pay full retail price or buy it from someone,if you wanna keep your unlimited data as of the 29th of June. But I heard Verizon will eventually kick everybody off the unlimited plan in a year or two.

Yeah, I'd return it and get your unlimited back. Then call up VZW and ask to keep your plan. I did the sa,me thing with AT&T and they honored my unlimited plan.
Just thought i would pop in and say if you can find a Walmart with them in stock, last time I was at work they were .97¢ for upgrade or new line. So 99$ isn't a great deal

I am considering getting a Samsung Vibrant these days. There is one thing that bother me a lot.
I am a student from China. And I am getting a prepaid SIM from T-mobile without any kind of plan right now for the price reason.
I was wondering if I got a unlocked Samsung Vibrant from eBay and use it on the T-mobile network, do I have to pay for the data plan?
The thing is I owned a AT&T Fuze before and everything works fine on the T-mobile network except for the 3G. That's okay for me cuz I don't use 3G anyway. But there is one time that my friend who is on AT&T network borrow my Fuze for couple days, and AT&T just added the data plan for it automatically. My friend try to call the staff in AT&T and they said that since HTC Fuze is a smart phone from AT&T, it require a data plan so he cannot cancel it. And they can tell when he insert the SIM card and AT&T will get the IMEI from him automatically.
I just wondering will the same thing happen in T-mobile? 30$/month is way to much for me.
BTW, there is another question for you guys. There is a lot of unlocked Galaxy S on eBay, which is nice. I was wondering how they get it unlocked? Can I get them unlocked right in the "carrier shop"? Or there is other ways that I can get the unlocked code?
Thx you guys anyway for answering these questions. BIG HAPPY FACE
You might have to spoof the IMEI, you're in the same boat as my friend. He wants to use his old Sidekick plan with the phone but since's it's not a Sidekick he can't use the data at all because they know he's using a smart phone. Discussing IMEI's is not usually allowed on xda because it's illegal in some countries. I think that's your only solution though.
Wait a few months until the phone is more popular and you'll be able to easily find ways to spoof the IMEI. So far I have found none.
you have to have the android web spoofed or not. Without it TMO will lock you out of the market and mms

as long as you use t mobile prepaid, you won't be charged for a data plan.
Why do you want to buy those expensive vibrants from ebay? I'd rather buy it from tmobile with 2 year contract, then cancel the plan and pay the ETF.
You can try to ask a t mobile online csr for the unlock code. Just tell him you will travel outside of us.

He said he is a student from china so I assume he does not have a SS# and without one he cannot sign up for a contract.
The best thing you can do OP is buy a Galaxy S i9000 off ebay. Tmobile only has the IMEI for the vibrants. That way you can pop your sim into the international version and they wont know.
Or get a sim card from mysimplemobile.com $60 a month for unlimited everything and it uses tmobile service. That is what I switched to and it works with my vibrant without an unlock.

Yup. You are right. I don't have the SSN right now so it's difficult for me to sign a contract.
The international version which is the i9000 is not bad. But I notice the price for the international version are significantly more expensive than the vibrant, for like 100-200$.
Anyway, thx for the suggestions.

Im using the vibrant on tmo after upgrade. you can go online and remove the service. I paid for one month and canceled. you just change the type of phone to one not requiring android data plan ie a non android phone and it will let you remove it. I'm using it purely on wifi. just remember you will need it unlocked or w/ 3g to activate it initially or after wipe.

Ahh, Hmmm I paid the full 500 and today is the last day I can return mine. How much was the termination fee out of curiosity?
Another question, I have been using mine prepaid for almost a month now and TMO hasn't given me any trouble with it. (Aside from the reps in the store when I went to buy it).
Do you think I should bother to spoof my IMEI? Is that something that can get a fellow into trouble in this paranoid new world?
From what I've read everywhere else, it seems that TMO needs your business and won't give you any trouble using a prepaid sim in the phone. Whose to say that won't change in the future though.

You can usually get a contract from T-mob with your passport and your F1 student visa (assuming you're on a F1). You'll have to wait for about an hour in order for them to get approval from headquarters, but it works fine. Got my Vibrant that way, and while the charges are high at least you get unlimited data (as in really unlimited), so watching videos, listening to pandora and all that is a non-brainer..

That's the thing I don't understand. I paid $199 for my Vibrant on a 2-year contract. I have a $200 ETF, which means that I can cancel, and get the phone for $400. For a non-contract, I would have paid the full $500.
So what one can do is use the Even More for one month (which is +$10 from the Even More Plus). Then cancel, pay the ETF, and move to the same Even More Plus plan. Which would mean you would get no contract for $400.
Am I missing something?

is this really possible? amazon currently has the vibrant for $0.01 with a new contract. so in theory, one could sign a new contract, cancel and pay the ETF of $200, and get the phone for $200.01?? then sign up for an even more plus plan with no contract? (i also thought EM was $20/month more than EM+)
any input would be appreciated. this sounds too good to be true
You can buy a Vibrant and use it on prepaid you are just going to pay $500 for the phone. T-Mobile doesn't care they wont and can't charge you extra.
I would recommend checking out flexpay, you can get a monthly plan and get data if you want it. If not go with prepaid $15 a month gives you unlimited SMS and $0.10 a minute and just use wifi when you need data.
One last thing is do not recommend imei spoofing as its illegal here.

If you cancel with amazon within 6 months you pay an added 250$ ETF to them. So it would be 450$ all day.
I got mine from costco for $99 and canceled for 200$ after ETF. So $300 total. You also get a free cheap case car charger and bluetooth from them. Oh and no activation fee.

nice. i'll look into something like this. i wonder if best buy / radioshack / car toys also have ETF fees of their own... (no costco membership for me)
I am kinda confused by this.
So I am in a stick situation here.
My parents have a family plan and I bought a Vibrant adding onto their Even More plan, which requires the $5 add a line and also $30 data plan. But I kinda think I don't really need data plan/3G cuz I am mostly home and don't quite use 3G unless I am not home, which isn't too often. $30 is a little money wasting, so I was thinking of just getting my phone without contract by paying $500 and just adding to my parents' Even More plan without data plan to save money.
But since I got my phone from Costco for $200 (when did this $99 deal start? I got mine a week ago...), does that mean I can just cancel and save money instead?
Important question though: Is it really true that there is no Android Market access without Tmo smartphone data plan? Why is this so? If so, is there any way of my getting away with it in my case?
Thanks,
FYI, if you have an F1 visa or any student visa you can do a contact with T-Mobile with no deposit and no ss#. This is something relatively new to t-mo. Just go to any corporate store location and they should be able to set it up for you. It takes about 45 minutes to process. That is the only down side.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/24/verizon-ceo-confirms-plans-for-tiered-data-pricing/
According to an article on engadget, verizon ceo confirms plans for tiered data pricing. I'm not sure how this will effect customers who have already signed a two year contract. I asked the Verizon rep when I bought my X, and he told me a while back that since I have a contract I won't be affected until it is up, but you know you can't trust them.
Either way, this sucks... way to go Verizon and ruin the best thing you have going for you.
That sucks the big one.

if ur already on an unlimited plan they cant make u chose a a tiered plan it goes against ur contract with them so they would ummm grandfathered ur plan until its expired...
Yes they are all correct your current contract would not be affected. I also saw a story about the Sprint CEO making comments that teired data could be coming to Sprint. Looks like all the carriers will be doing this in the future. Maybe they will use some of that money and upgrade their networks
-McMex
Its just like the new data plans for the iPhone. If you had the unlimited plan before the tiered plans game out you would be grandfathered in. My younger brother had the iphone 3 gs, then cancelled and switched over to the droid x, didn't like it then went back to at&t with the new contract only to find out that he now has tierd data plans.
This will be the same issue for verizon users so stick with your plans and nothing will change. Plus we all know that droid x users consume more data than any other droid product.

If Boost uses a cdma network it's possible. Just a few system changes. For my old Storm it was as simple as changing an xml file to cross to other carriers, but it was a cdma and gsm phone.
This is horrible, first they go from $10 data to $30 data (charging basically what it would cost you to get a voice line) now they **** us again???
AT&T is a joke, went from $30 unlimited to $25 2GB...really?????? you charging basically the same for only 2GB? what a joke, this is complete bull**** if verizon has anything close to that.
Fair $15 2GB $20 5GB
Yeah good thing I just signed for a 2yr with verizon. Cuz THAT BLOWS BIG OLE DONKEY BALLS>
In the future....I'm talking 10/15 years....Tiered Data plans will suck if the limited plans stay at the same cap. Because when 6G comes out and verizon has yet to raise the ceiling on your 200MB plan ...your transfer rate per second will be so fast that within a few minutes you'd hit your 200MB monthly data cap for the whole month. I know the executives are thinking this far down the road and are probably shivering with fear with unlimited plans and are thinking dollars signs with tiered plans. That's why it's so crucial to try to stay on unlimited for the rest of your life.
.....in canada we get pretty much gouged......eat this boys...$25 for. .... Wait for it....500mb.
I am constantly aware of how much i am downloading and up loading. Thank god for wifi everywhere.

25 bucks for 500MB??? I feel so sorry for you. I'm really curious to see what Verizon proposes. They usually copy everything AT&T does so I'm assuming 200MB/2GB but it may be a little different. Either way it's limiting and those caps will only work with today's technology not tomorrows.
They would be doing this as some people don't use that much data on their smart phones so this lets them pay for what they need at a lower cost. Now for those who use 3-5GB will be screwed, what really sucks is they say the Droid line uses more data than any other smartphone.
But luckily those of us that already have unlimited data plan will not be have to deal with this until you upgrade your device which in that you would be upgrading your contract including that specific detail. Even if you go month to month after your contract they cannot change it on you.
Crap...

LTE is just around the corner, and can already run up to 100/mbps on single antennas without duplexing. Poor sprint.
So if we are grandfathered in...and we upgrade our phones in one or two years, only to find out our unlimited plan isn't "compatible" with the new phone, we'll be forced to get tiered data?
This happened when I went from my dare with $10 unlimited data to my omnia with $30 unlimted data. I wasn't allowed to keep my data plan because it was not compatible.
After 7+ years as a loyal Verizon customer, and 2+ years as a fanatical Incredible user, I'm leaning strongly towards leaving it all behind. The straw was the recent change to mandatory Shared Data plans. I just can't justify spending $30+ more per month when I upgrade for essentially the same service I am getting now. I understand why Verizon needed to make a change...but it's just too much for me.
I've been eyeing the GNex for a while, and with the continued disappointing turnout of HTC on Verizon (Inc 4G...really? Small screen, no ImageSense), I am planning to get the $350 unlocked, GNex direct from Google and then sign up with a month-to-month plan with a GSM provider.
Sad to see it all go, but also excited with the new possibilities.
If anyone else is mulling this conundrum, I found this thread to be very helpful...

Im up for my upgrade so i went on the vzw site logged in, went to upgrade device, picked a phone and went to the plan portion and there is only the one, 40 per phone 50 for 1gb shared data. No option to keep my current plan unless i buy the phone for retail with no contract. I am just going to save up my cash and when the inc dies, buy a phone retail or off amazon or ebay or something. That way i keep my 60 dollar a month bill with the unlimited data plan forever. I dont do a lot of talking or texting so the whole unlimited deal dosent really seem like a deal to me. And 50 for 1gb, thats just outrageous.
I know losing unlimited sucks, but I voluntarily gave it up. The shared plan gives me unlimited talk time, and 4gb a month between my girlfriend and I. We only averaged around 1.5-1.75gb per month each anyways and now that I figured out my employers network password I'm on their wifi at work lol. Saving $40 a month and gaining unlimited talk time was well worth it for me.
That said, I'm still considering leaving Verizon. Their service has been exceptionally poor in my area lately. My friend at work is on sprint and using speedtest his 3g speeds are consistently much greater than mine. But I don't know if I want to keep my Inc until January 2013.

I plan on doing the same thing when the new iPhone (yes, sorry) comes out in Sept/Oct. I've been a Verizon Wireless customer since I was 16, and would end up paying about $20 more a month on their new plan as well. Verizon has good coverage where I am, so I'll either buy it unsubsidized and keep my unlimited data, or switch to a GSM month to month provider.

blasphemy i tell you, BLASPHEMY
The Shared Data plans work great if you have someone to share it with. Engadget, Android Central, et al have done the analysis and these are good deals for groups of 3 or 4 people who use less than 4GB together...for individuals like me it's a really bad deal. I would basically pay $30-40 more for a capped data plan.
I've thought about getting a retail price phone...you can get an Inc 2 on ebay now for $250-350. But then I wonder, why settle for an old phone, when, for the same price, I can get a brand new, unlocked GNex and be free of all this. Coverage is a concern. Support is a concern. Verizon has been fantastic for me on both. But I live in DC and friends with AT&T and T-Mobile are happy with their coverage.
Still haven't decided...but I appreciate everyone's thoughts and feedback. The Incredible dev community has been just that....another reason I'm looking at the GNex...gotta follow the devs.
Yeah dude I'm considering a nexus for my daily driver. I'm already on tmobile and pay $15-30 a month. They have a $30/month prepaid plan, 100 voice minutes, unlimited texts, and unlimited data (first 4 or 5gbs at hpsa+ speeds). Beats any Verizon plan for a single user. Only thing is you have to have T-Mobile coverage in your area. I get better coverage on T-Mobile than Verizon in some places where I live

Just ran the numbers for all the lines on our plan and it is better for us to stay with what we have now. If we do upgrade we will go retail or upgrade and opt for the 2GB non-shared data at 29.99 It will keep our price the exact same and the lines that have unlimited can keep it. It also makes it 10 dollars cheaper for us to do 3 lines with 2GB data than shared 6GB data. I totally get the new plans and such, but it suck to only be one phone on the plan.
If we didn't live in the middle of nowhere we might change, but VZW offers the best service for us.

She said in my case that she made a note in the computer allowing her to take her phone/phone number off my account. But once she did that, then I needed to call customer service for them to change my family share plan to something else, because they no longer sell a unlimited data plan so customer service would have to make my account a single tiered account so I don't get cornered into a share everything plan and lose my unlimited.

So you can get a non shared data plan? When i went on the vzw site to do an upgrade, it only gave me the shared data option starting at $50 for a gb.

That is my understanding from the rep I spoke with on the phone on Thursday. I was told the 2GB plan would still be around for any line I would want to put it on. I think it would for sure be something you would need to call in about b/c I don't see it listed under online options.
i had the incredible, went through a bunch of phones, lost some money, but ended up on a nexus with unlimited data. now that i only have ~9 months left on contract, im thinking of going to tmobiles $70 a month unlimited everything. its more then i get now, for a lot less. if you guys are in the market for used phones, try swappa.com. really good site. ive used them several times. nexuses can be had for $360
I really want to buy a nexus 4 and use T-Mobile prepaid service however i am currently locked into a contract until dec2013. My current options is to pay a $200 etf and sell my current galaxy nexus, however i would prefer to press my luck trying to not pay an etf. Has anyone had any luck doing so lately? I know about 10 years ago i cancelled att because i moved and didn't have any coverage at my new house and my cell phone is my primary phone. Just wanted to get some opinions, thanks!

I don't think you can get out of a etf should you decide to cancel your service. Its just a matter of whether you don't mind owing Verizon and just go ahead and get T-Mobile.
Pretty sure the only ways to not pay an etf on most carriers are:
- moving to an area of no coverage
- death (seriously)
- military deployment
& I am not sure of the others. & all of those, you need to provide paperwork/proof.
Good luck. I am currently wishing I could get out of my T-Mobile contract.

OP,
do you have unlimited LTE? If so, PM me.
Thanks,
Yeah actually you might find a boat load of people wanting an unlimited plan if you have it

Another option would be to use an "excessive" amount of data in a roaming area. This appears to have worked for a Sprint user.

I did the same thing last month. they hit me with the etf but the way i look at it was that i was spending over $100 a month on my GNex with verizon, so etf was equal to two months of service with verizon. So i just swallowed it and paid the amount. you'll break even in about 3 months instead of waiting for Dec. VZW has you by your b***s.....
The monthly savings will compensate for your etf in 3 months but if you have an Unlimited data contract you can do a transfer of liability on that line. I just did this and sold my Unlimited line for $125( on HowardForums.com) and then there is no ETF, but you will lose your phone number. Is your phone number worth $325(selling of line + etf), to me it was.

Verizon's ETF is $350 minus $10 for every month you've paid into your contract and they will not let you out of it. If you do port the number early do it at the end of your billing period as Verizon will continue to bill you through the end of the cycle. I had to call them and get them to refund me 3 weeks that I didn't have service with them that they still automatically billed me for. They claimed they don't know when the port actually goes through so they continue to bill you just in case you change your mind.
join solavei! only $49 unlimited a month no contract and from the money you'll be saving monthly you'll break even in a month or two
There isn't a loophole to get out of an etf right now.

Don't have to lose your number, you could have ported the number over to google voice (or any other carrier) and just told verizon to provision you a new number on that line.
If you transfer responsibility of your line to someone else you don't pay an ETF.

I currently have a unlimited plan, it still runs through 11/29/14 but I want out.
If somebody wants to take it over go for it, I will keep my phone so I can put it on my wifes plan.

You might be better off posting this in the Sprint section or maybe even the Verizon section. I do not know why a Nexus owner would ever want to go to the Verizon if you know what I mean.
I got out ETF free from Verizon a couple of months ago because I got bad service by my house and I am loving that I can now purchase a Nexus from the play store and use it on a pre-paid plan with no contracts or ETF's.
EDIT: This thread is so old. Why did you bring it back to life?

Just wait until it ended and buy the Nexus 5 which will be released about the sametime.

He brought it back to life because it was relevant to his situation. Why start a new thread when there is already one available?
You can get someone to take over your contract. What worked for me was I paid someone $100 to take over my contract with Rogers and i still kept my SGS3(which I sold to buy a N4) which was better than paying $500 to cancel

The easiest way to get out of the contract is to make the carrier cancel it for you. "How do you make the carrier cancel the contract?" you ask...simple...roam.
Even though you probably have unlimited roaming on your plan, the carrier has a threshold that they really don't want you to cross because it costs them money when you use another carrier's towers. If you keep crossing that threshold the carrier will basically kick you off their network, effectively cancelling your contract.

Long time AT&T customer here. Their price on the S4 is 200 and Amazon has it listed for $138. Problem is when I check out it shows only a limited data plan I must select. I called AT&T and they promised me I would not lose the unlimited plan, however they won't send me a confirmation email about it, which makes me a little leary. Have you guys been able to retain your unlimited plans through Amazon?
Also, any other good deals on the S4 that beat Amazon?

I bought my phone from best buy and the best buy rep said I would lose my unlimited plan. It was tough to let go of an unlimited plan but I was like alright. But in the end att had to set up my phone because when the bb rep tried it wouldn't let him and I was able to retain my unlimited plan. If your grandfathered in which means your not going to lose your plan you had unless otherwise like switching carriers

Has anyone bought from Amazon and kept their unlimited plan?
You have to go thru att to keep your unlimited data plan. If you buy thru Amazon, you'll get assigned to one of the default plans, and you have to talk to att to get your unlimited plan back. The issue is that there is no guarantee.
If unlimited plan is important to you, suck it up and go to an att store.

I bought mine from Best Buy and kept my existing plan and they also price matched Walmart. $138 plus I had a $50 gift card from BB. Worked out pretty good. Also came with MDL.

I actually got the phone this morning at Fry's for $95.99, and they kept the grandfathered unlimited plan no problem.

I love Fry's I can spend hours in there...I had unlimited data since the first iPhone in '07, then usually went to Apple to use my upgrades. My last upgrade was in October when I got the iPhone 5. But the whole time I used Craigslist to satisfy my phone changing habits. From my first iPhone I traded for a 3G, then used an upgrade for a 3GS, then used the wife's upgrade for a 4, then traded for a 4S, used my last upgrade for a 5 then traded that for a Note 2, and then traded that for an S4. Hopefully I can trade my S4 for the Note 3 when it's out. But anyway, back on topic...I believe it all depends on the rep you get when you get the phone. My AT&T rep was more than happy to transfer my unlimited LTE iPhone plan to an unlimited LTE Android plan. Glad it worked out for you though!
