problem downloading files - Xperia Play General

when i try to download a file from f.ex megaupload i only get a html file ...
i tried the astro solution but nothing.. anyone has solved this?

I regularly download things from websites. Alot of files from emu sites and they lead to megaupload.
They work fine for me.
Ive tried it with alot of browsers, stock, opera, opera mini, boats, dolphin.
Cant see any reason why downloading a file would give you the html page instead of the file.
What browser do you use?

i use the one that comes in xperia play...
i have just tried to download a file from fileserve and got .html again

Try getting Opera Mobile from the market place (its free) and try with that.
I personally do not like the stock browser. I find it slow, sluggish and jerky.
My set up is Opera Mobile for Wi-Fi and Opera Mini for 3g connection.
You will not find a faster browser than Opera Mini, it compresses data up to 90% on a seperate server before the data comes to your phone. Excellent for speed and if you are on a data plan to save MB usage.
The only downside for Opera Mini is it doesnt support flash. (which is why i use Opera Mobile too). Bookmarks can be synched automatically between both browsers.
Anyway, try another browser and see if downloading works.

ok i´ll try
thank you

Opera Mina Beta Non-Proxy?

hey all,
I was wondering if there was a way/method/tweak so that you do not have to use the opera proxy in order to connect to the internet when using opera mini.
I like the opera mini browser a lot, except I feel like I do not get the same speeds when having to go through their servers.
Is there something I am missing?
Thanks,
Ryan

You're right... the going through their servers is NOT the same speed, its a GREAT DEAL FASTER!
Why? Because their servers take a huge load off of your device by rendering and compressing everything on their side and send only what your browser needs to display in a special format to the opera mini browser. That's part of the whole idea of Opera mini, and why many of us prefer it; Using this method cuts bandwidth and rendering times into fractions, not to mention it makes certain dynamic pages possible that aren't otherwise (if you've ever tried to access an AJAX enabled web page before, you'll know that no other mobile web browser can handle it, but Opera sends you whatever their servers render, and they render it properly!).
Not only would pointing the browser away from their servers NOT make it go faster, but I'm fairly certain that it wouldn't work at all since it uses its own proprietary format.
Hope this answers your question!
*delete double post*
the problem is half the time it takes forever to connect to the server or doesn't connect at all. very annoying. this didn't happen with opera mini 3.1... maybe i'll have to switch back.
funny, works fantastic for me...

Browser: Load all pages as 'desktop' ?

Is there an easy way to make all pages 'think' that the browser is a desktop? Like if I go to google.com I want it to take me to classic instantly, and any other sites that automatically adjust to mobile sites if it detects a phone.
If you use Dolphin Browser you can set the user agent to desktop and it will load all pages that way.
EVO on Tapatalk
How does dolphin compare to the stock browser?
Dolphin HD is slow in my opinion, you could also try opera mini 5.1.
I still prefer the stock browser.
here is a trick to always view your favorite websites in desktop view. I don't know how to make every site open as desktop, just your most frequent ones.
Go to a website.. such as www.google.com
it will auto open mobile view...scroll down in the website and click on desktop. once desktop view opens.. set this page as a bookmark... now everytime you access the pg via bookmark, it will go to desktop view.
another option, if you want to set google.com desktop as your homepage.
again click desktop, when desktop google comes up, copy the link, paste this new link as your homepage. and your phone will automatically go into desktop google everytime you open your browser.
you can bookmark many webpages, so just set up your most favoritely frequented sites to be bookmarked as desktop view. simple!
There is a code you can enter into your browser that gives you more settings. One of those is the ability to make your phone appear as a desktop, not a phone.
However, I tried this and my browser crashed and I had to delete all data and cache to get it to work again. This DID work on the Nexus One when flash came out (allowed us to watch hulu.com)
The string is about:debug, then go to web settings. Last option is ua string. Change to desktop. Again though, I DO NOT recommend doing this.

I don't know about everyone esle but i like SKYFIRE browser from the market: allows you to choose between Android, Desktop or Iphone i think as your default loading method. It's very speedy to load in desktop mode. Try that out

Yep, this works well. A few pages still detect the presence of a mobile browser, but 9 out of 10 pages load the desktop versions.
I always experienced Skyfire on other phones as laggy. Does it run as fast as Android stock browser?

Browser sync and differences

Hi,
one of the most important features for me (which makes me want to buy Honeycmob tablet) is browser.
As far as I know browser in Xoom is sort of a mobile version of Chrome.
So, my questions are:
- how close are they in reality?
- what can be synced?
- what can not be synced?
- what about extensions I use in my desktop chrome (one of them is freshstart to save open tabs! excellent)
- can I have my bookmarks bar in Honeycomb (I use it a lot)
I use three different PC's every single day and I work with browser a lot. All this makes Chrome so much pleasure to use... because I can finish work at one machine and easily continue (exactly where I was) on another machine few minutes later. I was hoping that tablet with Honecomb will fit right in
Will it?
Currently it only syncs bookmarks. All of your bookmarks sync just fine, folder structure is preserved. The only difference is that Bookmarks Bar shows up as the root folder with Other Folders as a subfolder in that. There is not a bookmarks bar, per se, but you can set your homepage to a Chrome-inspired "Most Visited" page which holds 12 pages (unfortunately you can't customize them, they are always your 12 most visited pages).
Chrome-to-phone still works on the Xoom, so you can always send pages from Chrome to the tablet, but you don't get any sort of tab syncing or extensions.
Is there any way to make web sites think it is chrome browser? Once the Flash is on the system it should be able to play all free videos as any other "desktop" browser.
I thought I read somewhere that phones with Android and Flash can do it.
Playon is not a solution. At home I can watch hulu on my desktop/netbook - the whole idea was to access it when I am not at home

Just like on phones, you can set it to use a desktop user agent. But for sites that check the flash version, you'll need to hex edit the plugin (there are other threads about that here if you look around)
At this stage I just need to know if it is doable - there is other thread about it... and I have been told -NO WAY (to do it) -either Hulu Plus or nothing :-(

Browser Desktop Mode questions.

Ok, I have read literally hundreds of posts concerning desktop vs mobile mode in the browser. I have tried several browsers, and have switched them all into desktop mode via the settings. But, none, including the stock browser and Dolphin seem to work as promised. So, I have several questions:
1. What is it that allows a website to recognize an android phone or tablet and an
ipod touch as a mobile device?
2. Is there any way to permanently change "whatever" so that all websites
recognize my tablet and ipod touch as a desktop?
I'm using opera mobile and all pages works fine on desktop mode

I tried one version of Opera last week and had no luck. Today, I downloaded Opera Mobile as you suggested and it worked just fine. Thanks for the suggestion.
But, the still should be a permanent fix for all Browsers. And, I would still like to know how a website recognizes a mobile device.
I believe they check the OS, not the browser, then redirect accordingly.
Running Honney Vil and stock browser and not seeing that problem, so probably does check the os, don't really know.
This is all based on what your browser "broadcasts" to the web server. I remember way back in the day, some custom ROMs had an option in the settings menu, even on the native browser, to set your browser type to one of many options, including "Android OS", "BlackBerry", "IE", "FireFox" etc... Most web sites are the ones in control of which page to display to you based on what browser it detects hitting the page. Below is an example of one of my web site's access log
Code:
[IP Masked} - - [24/Aug/2011:14:55:57 -0400] "GET /forums/viewtopic.php?p=28441 HTTP/1.1" 200 11347 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Baiduspider/2.0; +http://www.baidu.com/search/spider.html)"
[IP Masked] - - [24/Aug/2011:14:56:09 -0400] "POST /forums/posting.php?mode=reply&f=11&t=2900 HTTP/1.1" 200 3144 "http://[URL Masked]/forums/posting.php?mode=reply&f=11&t=2900" "Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.3; en-us; DROID X2 Build/4.5.1A-DTN-117-15) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1"
It's from those logs where it says things like "Android 2.3.3" that tells a server which site to load. Unfortunately, most developers have hard coded anything as "Android" to be shown the mobile browser. Other browsers, like Dolphin and Opera, are either broadcasting a different type of browser, or give the option to.
I have the settings in the stock browser set to viewing mode:desktop (under the advanced tab of the browser settings) and have not come accross any pages that get redirected to mobile. I'm running stock 3.1
Right, you send USER_AGENT info when you connect to a site and based on that - typically what the OS is - the site can redirect.
With 3.0.1 you had to type about:debug in the browser to get the debug menu in settings and there you could change the user agent string. In 3.1 we have that in the advanced menu but I still prefer the old way;-). Don't forget to clear the cache after you do that because the browser might have cached the redirect to the mobile site.
Thanks for all the info. I have the stock browser, Dolphin and Opera Mobile. I have the user agent configured to Desktop in all 3 browsers. All 3 work on most, but not all sites. Only Opera works on all sites that I have tried. It is very disconcerting for sure as I really prefer the stock browser.

Well, then it goes back to what I posted about the web sites themselves properly delivering the right site based on the user agent (thanks for reminding me of the name user agent gammaRascal!). The web designer has to write code to account for all the various user agents.
There are some other differences too. Try this website in the stock browser,
dolphin and Opera: http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=nyy
With the stock browser, the standings right below the picture on the left, is not complete.
with Dolphin, all looks like as on my PC.
with Opera, the page does not fit the screen.

[Q] No Internet Browser for advanced websites...

I tried Dolphin mode desktop & mobile & other
I tried Chrome
I tried Firefox
I tried the default browser
...
Why when I try to download a small file from my "Owncloud 4.0.7" it doesn't work...
Other websites too, got the same problem and somes difficulties to show flash gallery...
Pad like Transformer are enough powerful to support load of heavy websites.
So the problem come from the app to load correctly websites.
There is a solution ?
Best regards
Bankaiii
Hi,
I use Chrome, Firefox and the stock ICS browser and in general i find browsing on the TF101 to be quite good. I am using Stock ICS.
Apart from ownCloud.org, do you have any other examples of websites you have trouble browsing from the transformer? I can test these out on mine.
To me it seem, that you can't download files from some sites, like sharehosters etc., because they prevent you from using a download manager. When you start a download on your device the download app kick in an is falsely detected as some kind of download manager.
Asolutely not.
I manage my own connection Internet
tell me if you can load the game : www.thesettlersonline.com
But Owncloud that I setup work perfectly on PC but not on my Pad
( Im still use Stock Rom )
I just tried thesettlers and it work with latest firefox nightly. played it for a minute but have no clue how to scroll...
google for firefox nightly android
