Korean Galaxy S II has NFC!!! *pics* - Galaxy S II General

Just got my hand on a Korean Samsung Galaxy S II. Found a NFC option under Setting menu. Then i removed the back cover, and found the NFC logo on the battery??!!? Could it be the battery is where the NFC tag is at?

What do you guys think?

Interesting
This is super interesting! From your pics I see that the phone has 4 connector pins, how many does the battery have? How many does the Indian battery have? I am inclined to believe this is the mystery behind "Optional NFC".

It would be interesting to see some side on shots compared to a standard SGS II - I hear the NFC version is somewhat thicker?

AFAIK, the KOREAN SGS2 had NFC since launch. lol

sd card slots not in the same place either

An NFC-chip inside the battery would actually make sense. It has a large surface area inside the phone, which would make the NFC handling easier.
However, the design is completly different. On the non-NFC GS2, the microSD cardslot is on the left side and the battery connectors are on the right side. Some small differences with the SIMcardslot and the external antenna connector too. So it seems its more than just the battery.

What are the specs on this version? Do they use the AT&T US frequencies?

Just a quick question: Have you checked 3G bands on the phone?
I heard that the Korean version is NOT quad-band, and am just wondering if you could check that.
Thanks.

I mentioned this a while ago.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13760704#post13760704
It's my understanding that the phone extends the NFC antenna onto the battery so signals don't get blocked by the battery.
It's tri-band only. Don't know why they'd do that though.

I think this version is quad-band GSM and quad-band UMTS. Not sure, I dont have the box with me. Will test this with AT&T in the states when i get back there next month.

How do you check to see if it's tri-band or quad-band GSM/UMTS?

can you pls dump the stock ROM u have in that SGS2 ? it might be useful... i dont know in what way, but may be yes or may be no...
just curious.... from that pic its quite clear that the battery has the NFC chip built in to the SGS2..... thats amazing...
thats why samsung has maded such a thin plastic backcover... i guess so.... nice thinking & it is an indirect clue i am almost sure....
what do u guys think ???

Was on one of the Korean Samsung Spec pages. Lost the link. Although I don't see why they'd make the international version quad band and the domestic version tri band, makes no sense. There's a number code you can enter to check the phone's settings/hardware. It didn't seem to work for me though.
BTW how did you manage to get the phone? It's my understanding you can't buy it outright here unless you're on a visa. Unless you're on a visa...
@manuvaidya:
They've been dumped already. They were dumped a few days after the phone was released. Seems like it's just not that interesting to devs here.

I hope so, we can just purchase the battery and/or sim if both are needed and we get NFC.
I guess NFC in the future release might mean it comes with a NFC enabled battery.

I found a basic side-by-side comparison of the Korean and Internation models:

The UK release phone also has 4 connectors pins and the UK battery also has 4 connectors.

I have the same battery that is labeled "Near Field Communication" and no, unfortunately it does not enable NFC on a stock UK phone running KE7.
Also, did anyone notice that the connector pins on the Korean SGSII are on the left side vs ours which is on the right?

I think it's like that because the Korean SGS2 has an antenna on the right side to watch TV-over-the-air.

Extra thickness is probably from the DMB tuner
All korean phones come with DMB tuners.

Dang, I was thinking of getting a spare battery from Korea.

G1 using AT&T 3G???

Before I get started, I already know that AT&T and TMobile are using different UMTS bands and that's why the G1 won't work on AT&T's 3G network. I've read many threads on this topic.
But...
I saw this...

...in another thread and it really got me wondering. The two Avago chips seem to control the frequecy used. What if one were to replace the ACMP-7381 with an ACMP-7331-TR1 and also replace the ACMP-7391 with an ACMP-7311-TR1? I checked the datasheets (available on the Avago website) and they all seem to be pin compatible.
Would I be willing to try it? Ummm... I don't know! I'm just curious if anybody else has any thoughts or comments?
So you want to carefully unsolder the chip and solder another, then pray it doesn't cause some problems with the logic circuit and finally spend lots of time messing with the phones firmware. Just to get 3G speeds where you already can get edge speeds.
If you want to do it as a project to see if you can, then I say cool, but if you are doing this just for 3G speeds on the AT&T network, then I think it's pointless, especially with the massive 3G rollouts T-Mobile is now doing.
i will post photos of the Canadian htc dream circuit board in a few hours.
I am VERY interested! I had my G1 on at&t with EDGE but finally switched to T-mobile for 3G with unimpressive results. I would be hesitant to try since Ive never messed with these components but I was able to do the LED soldering mod to my Samsung and Nokia back in the day and made a few circuit boards in school. I definitely think I could physically complete the hardware swap its just what happens next that Im worried about. lol
What if the component your swapping has a different Ω rating? This could undervolt or even worse burn out other components. Now were talking about adding resistors or possibly removing other ones already exsisting on the board. Not to mention that this board is SMT (surface mount), meaning there aren't any solder points on the bottom and the components don't have pins unless they are heavy and then they are only little plastic stabilizers.
You're looking at much more cost and hassle than it's probably worth.
Also, would the stock antenna work with the different frequency?

I come from a computer engineering background. I know all about surface mount components and how difficult soldering can be. I could pour over the datasheets a bit more if I decide to pursue this any further and even speak to a rep from Avago. I'm more concerned about the software at this point. I'm wondering if I would need to make firmware changes?

BOOYAH!! See, it's right there! Those two small ICs in the upper left-hand corner: Avago 7311 and Avago 7331!
Ok, so I compared the two boards a little closer. The board itself appears to be the same. The two Avago chips are the same as I originally suggested. However, several of the smaller resistors and/or capacitors appear to be different. I bet this mod is theoretically possible, but it's probably more trouble than it's worth.
wow hmmm tell me if it works if you solder it right
i too have been thinking about this, but i am not gonna take apart the G1 again, it was enough of a hassle keeping that damn void sticker from breaking. i have a few phones that are compatible on ATT 3G and t-mobile 3G and thought about switching the cips, but i don't think i am up for the challenge. my 8525 has been apart for almost a year and a half now and i lost most of the screws so it's in a box waiting for me to come up with some project for the parts

SGS II model i9101 found in Vietnam

Just saw a i9101 model in tinhte.vn forums from a friend of mine.
He said he flash it with KE2 and now it stucks at the boot screen which show i9101
He opened the back cover, removed the battery and the lable notes that's a i9101 model from samsung, made in korea.
Here's some shot which is visible of the boot screen. The picture he took of the lable is not very clear.

I dont have any further info about the CPU because it's stuck.
Oooh, how interesting! I can't see there being much difference. Maybe just a carrier specific device?
The battery connector is on the right hand side, not the left as on UK (non-NFC) models.
The Korean models that have TV and NFC also have the battery connector on the right...
... significant? ...got NFC? ... Don't know...
the display is superamoled o slcd?
It's clearly Super AMOLED+. look how deep the blacks are
I guess the I9101 is the version with NFC. Lets wait to see what version the Indian SGS II will be.
Looks very interesting! Hopefully, they will mark if it has NFC or not since ppl will be confused about which models is going to have NFC and which one doesnt.

Samsung Galaxy S2 w/ NFC Indian Version Quick Review (UPDATE: No NFC [for now])

Hey,
I finally got my SGS2 and its awesome!
https://picasaweb.google.com/tanmay.sonawane/SamsungGalaxyS2
I won't go into reviews and stuffs thats already been reviewed and said over 100 times.
I'll just jot down whatever the Indian version has different from its other brothers.
1. So apparently the Indian version ships with a Samsung Leather Case (as seen in the pic below among other standard accessories) :
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Rm_zEUrNlkE4djMA-JLVBg?feat=directlink
2. The Indian version seems to come pre-installed with the XWKE8 update. Correct me if wrong but afaik XWKE7 is the latest.

}
3. The NFC was so far the highlight feature but I'm still not able to find any mention of it anywhere. If our XDA Korean members can help me find out, that'd be great!
A test with an Application called ZDevice Test was unable to detect the presence of a NFC Chip.
4. Contrary to rumors I didn't find any 8Gb SD Card preinstalled.
5. No Music Hub.
I'll post more as and when I find any differences.
If you have any doubts of your own, feel free to ask! I'm prolly gonna be up all night
Cheers!
Edit:
I took a pic of the back. And I guess this is the NFC Sensor? Can anyone confirm this?
http://cl.ly/3Y2R080f3D0k1A392S0Q/NFC_.jpg
Edit 2:
Ok so I'm pretty sure (according to all comments) the Indian version DOES NOT have NFC. Samsung India gave us false dreams and broke our hearts!
Edit 3:
Ok I've done some initial tests with the battery and there are 2 scenarios:
1. (Yesterday) 1am to 10am (on Standby) : AirPlane Mode On : Battery Drain just 4% (from 60% to 56%)
2. (Today) 3am to 10am (on Standby) : Power Save Mode On : Battery Drain 26% (from 30% to 4%)
So inshort the Android System battery bug exists. Here's a screenshot of the battery tool for usage from 1pm June 3 to 10 am June 4 :
Edit 4 :
According to Letsbuy, the official retail partner for selling the SGS2 in India, NFC will be activated in the Future Ice Cream Sandwich update.
Letsbuy said:
Samsung India Update 04-Jun-2011: All the handsets purchased from Letsbuy.com on pre-order shall be equipped with ON board NFC chipset,Which shall be usable after upgrade of OS Android 3.0 honeycomb(Code name Ice Cream Sandwitch).(Future Update)

Well the credibility of this post is not yet known. Check out the above reply made here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14446675&postcount=2411
Edit 5 :
According to this article. NFC Sensor is embedded onto the body in SGS2 as opposed to the backpanel in Nexus S.
So we still might stand a chance with Indian SGS2's having NFC.
http://www.nfc.cc/archives/588
Do you see the yellow tinge on the left with a gray background and low brightness?
Edit: And congrats on being the first of us here to get the Indian version and making the rest of jealous
Yes there is a slight yellow tint when you check it with this page : http://fiddle.jshell.net/qFxsC/1/show/
Looks like this is a global issue and every SGS2 produced so far will have it.
But let me add that this is in no way a major issue.
With normal phone usage I bet it's impossible (if at all) to notice.
I assure you, any normal user, if not told about this yellow tint will not even come to know. Its that unnoticeable!
Thanks for the confirmation.
Was hoping against hope that they'd have fixed it in later production batches, however doesn't look like it.
Enjoy the phone!

Ohh well. Then I'm afraid the Indian version too doesn't have NFC.
Is not having NFC a big issue? Would those NFC stickers be inferior in any way?
BTW just to confirm, are there any other known differences in the version being sold in India (I9100) and elsewhere(I9101 and I9103 etc)? I am planning to get it here in India.
This thread and other websites seem to suggest NFC chip is the only difference:

BTW does anyone here have any feedback on the Indian mobile retail chain Univercell, they seem to have a pretty reasonable price (if along with a crappy website).

This is how NFC is embedded in Nexus S,
Does your SGS2 posses anything similar on the back cover?
P.S.
To read more about NFC and how it is attached in Nexus S & how it works, heres an article that might help you,

And, if you can't find this under settings -> Wireless & Network Settings, then we should get register a complaint against Samsung for cheating us,

Optional NFC ?

Today I met samsung representative in CPW, who told me that there's no NFC option for galaxy note but it may differ in other countries.
That would alright if it wasn't for engadget article, which clearly states that there's NFC controller inside (NFC controller: NXP PN544).
Does anyone have an idea if it would be possible to use NFC technology if the controller is already inside the device(assuming we'll get ICS)?
I have seen on engadget too.. I think gnote has nfc support maybe with updating ics
That engadget found nfc informations in the firmware does not mean the chip actually is inside the device. Could be available just in another regio...
Engadget just reported what Supercurio mentioned. May be the phone Supercurio got is not UK version. (donno which country he is from)

Supercurio does not have the phone.
Currently there is only one version of phone in the market. European version
If the Note does have an NFC chip, wouldn't it be listed in the spec sheet of the user manual? Can someone verify this?
Forget it guys, the EU note don't have nfc, its is only for the korean market, same as LTE
Yep, samsung stripping nfc from another device because " the market in europe isn't ready for nfc". I'm pretty sure the market would grow considerably if you started putting NFC on your devices since most people will go for a 20 month + contract...
No NFC here either even for the prototypes on display (which didn't have the S-Pen even though its listed on the spec sheet.
Pict: http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/4489/samsunggalaxynote.jpg
I have NFC what use that technology will be until there are a lot more devices out there that support it.
NFC Is probably in the battery, if you check the t-mobile sgs2 t989 you can see what i mean! So its just a battery change, and you'll probably have nfc!

"There’s also NFC support too. We have the strange suspicion that the NFC chip might be integrated into the battery as it carries the NFC sign.
Samsung Galaxy S II T-Mobile
The NFC chip might be hiding inside the battery
Unlike the rest of the Galaxy S II lineup, the NFC on the T-Mobile version is fully functional right out of the box. There is a pre-installed app, called Tags, which utilizes it."

Yep, samsung stripping nfc from another device because " the market in europe isn't ready for nfc". I'm pretty sure the market would grow considerably if you started putting NFC on your devices since most people will go for a 20 month + contract...

That's a silly argument that they didn't use for the Galaxy Nexus!

NFC is greatly catching up in India. There are article coming in newspapers here where various uses of nfc tech are being discussed plus there are various TV ads coming on tv about nokia phones where they show content sharing via nfc. tag line is tap and share. I just dont know what is wrong with samsung they are not able to add a simple piece of tech in their devices not even as large as gnote.

Looks like we will need to see if there are 4 battery pins on the device. It *could* be for something else, but I doubt it.

There are only three pins on my Euro battery and only three pins on the Note that match up with it.
I think it short sighted of Samsung if customers in Europe cannot upgrade the Note to enable NFC if they want to.

I wouldn't be really bothered about NFC if it wasn't for these official specs.

It's slightly painful to think that this tech might come handy next year and we won't be able to use it with £600 price tag phone.
Android Beam
With Galaxy Nexus you can now easily share contacts, websites, apps, maps, directions and YouTube videos to other people close by. Simply hold two NFC enabled Android phones close to each other and touch to beam and share.

Just an example of NFC usage introduced with ICS. It will be the trend set by Google. I wish such an expensive Note will include all the features.

lol, you were wanting to pay even MORE??
damn
I was looking foward to using google wallet all over
" Does anyone have an idea if it would be possible to use NFC technology if the controller is already inside the device(assuming we'll get ICS)? "
We need 3 things; 1e hardware, this controller and an antena, (secure element not embedded in this controller but only important for payments, and can be added with SIM- or microSD- card.
2e software, ICS not essential, Android 2.3.? supports NFC, just not with Beam app out of the box.
3e business decisions, especially the carrier!

Need assistence : fake or not ?

Hi everyone,
I am in the opportunity to swap my S4 with a Note 3, but the person claims this Note 3 is from Korea.
I am wondering if it's fake or not.
Screenshot he sent me : https://app.box.com/s/enjy529pg077nemwyc5j
It looks real, but I never heared about a Korean version (however Samsung is Korean, so it could very well be a normal version)
Can you guys tell if this is the real deal ?

Why would he want to swap (no offense) it unless something extra is in for him? It's like going from a super top of the range car to a phone that was top of the range 12 months ago...
Surely in Korea he (in a gadget filled world) be able to supply a picture of his phone in action, e.g. with him holding it and with a piece of paper with his email address and yours written on?
tell him to post the pic of benchmark of the phone took from camera from diffrent angle ..not screen shot

Sometimes people buy something and regret it within a few days.
And then they are looking for something simular, but smaller in size.
I have swapped phones many times and always had a very good deal out of it.
However one should always be very aware of fake (Chinese clones) phones.
And since the Chinese are getting better and better in cloning, it's sometimes really hard to see the difference.
I believe I have found the answer in the meantime myself : http://www.needrom.com/mobile/hdc-gt-n9000/
It's indeed a fake.....HDC GT-N9000 with a MTK6589 chipset
Let this post be a lesson to anyone who will get in the same position
Thats fake. The color is off and the battery percentage is a bit smaller than the original.
Also, I would want to see how cpu Z would read the specs of the device, and how it is going to perform under benchmarks.

The other hint should have been the size of the screenshot provided - the clones are not (yet) 1920x1080.
Also, the Samsung dialer codes don't work on the clones. That's a sure way to tell.
In the Play Store an app can be downloaded, called "Genuine Galaxy S4/Note3"
Download ; https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hotdog.truth
Can be very usefull as well
It is unbelieveable that how they are coppying this phones !

Yup, Anything can be cloned to look the part, heck even the software clone itself is close enough until closer inspection. - Golden rule I guess in buying a second hand model.
Make sure you give it a really good test run, test the apps, have a look at the battery and insides to make sure that it says SAMSUNG (A few have SUMSANG believe it or not!) - As mentioned elsewhere, a genuine seller will have no objections to you looking over it. Oh and never ever buy blind - if you ain't seen it or felt it in your hand, it ain't worth the risk of a scam.
And real samsung Note3 is start with SM-N code not GT-N9000 like shown in your system info screenshot...

Thanks for your reply Bro, but I already figured out myself that it's fake.
But for others who get in the same situation and want to know how to recognize a fake Note 3, maybe this post is very helpfull.

Also the HDC clones don't have the Samsung logo on the front.

The one with the Samsung logo isn't the official Note 3 either. Could be a prerelease or whatever, but that is not what it should look like.
Update: when taking a closer look, I actually think it is the first of the Note series. All proportions, the speaker mesh and sensors seems to match that look.
Ya haha the top sensors are wrong, the bottoms too wide and button is too rectangular

Ahhh, It's always fun to see what can be done for <$200 these days.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iD8hcwzW1c
It's supposed to be as fast as the HTC One X according to one benchmark.
I think it's neat.
there is only one way to do the things right and have peace of mind, get your phones from carriers or authorized dealers, always the real thing, an always covered by warranty, in irder to save money, many get their phones anywhere, literally on the streets sometimes, but, at what cost later?, I have seen many post like, my home button is loose, have a smear on screen, the colors are horrible, the powee button doesnt work, the screen has a gap, etc, etc, all those problems get solved by warranty, that is why you pay the full price, peace of mind
