Hello,
It looks as if HTC is releasing the SDK soon, making it easier to develop sense for non-sense devices like the epic.
Here is the link:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/attention-sense-developers-sense-sdk-coming-soon/
I swear i saw another post just like this one?
I fail to see how this will make porting Sense any easier.
Sense is closed source, HTC is releasing an SDK allowing developers to make and optimize sense.
Thats why
They are just releasing an SDK so that people can develop apps that integrate with the Sense environment. Its not like they open sourced all of Sense.
Actually this is interesting, a friend of mine (IT professional) spoke to me today about how HTC is planning on releasing a mini-Market for Sense devices. If HTC were to allow Sense to be ported to other devices, that would mean their Sense-Market would be available across numerous devices. It's an interesting thought. Whether it's valid is yet to be seen.

Hi,
I am new to this forum and would just like to know if anyone has any idea if there will be an official release of the HTC Hero's UI on to the G1.
I have heard that it will be available for all other Android and Windows Mobile phones except the G1.
Please let me know.
Thanks a Lot
Pretty doubtful I think because it uses HTC's custom libraries to create the user interface, while the G1 was officially shipped using open source code available in the cupcake branch. Some devs are adding features though from the donut branch also whick keeps us G1 users up to date with the latest features but eventually the hardware will get limited to support these additions.
I've not actually tried out a Hero build myself but from the threads posted about it so far, the ports to the G1 are still pretty slow and bloated, especially the widgets.
The answer, sadly, is no - HTC has confirmed that the Sense UI will not be ported to any device that is branded "with Google" such as the G1 or MyTouch 3G.
Won't it be ported to the Roger's G1 though? That's not a "with google" phone.
its already been semi ported. If you have rooted your phone you can already install a Hero Rom on your G1, although there are some things missing like bluetooth, it is getting updated almost daily.
cool, thanks a lot for all your help.
Hey Guys,
It is quite good that nowadays there are heaps of reviews/comments for everything specially Handheld devices. but it make decision so hard! Once you decide to buy something you will find some Cons for your selected device!
I was going to buy HTC Touch HD, I really like its big screen and so called iPhone killer features (hahah...) but then I get familiar with HTC Hero which comes with Open Source OS (I m crazy about Open source things! once you try it you really feel freedom!). so I changed my mind!
Although Android and HTC Hero have quite long way to go, but I think it is worthy to try, since Open source application develop very fast and once a bug happen (like lag problem in HTC) a big community programmers can get together to fix it. I dont wanna talk about open source capabilities cuz a lot to say. just have look at how ubuntu and other Open source OSs have been developed and today software vendors make a copy of them in their new applications (like MacBooks fancy effect copied from Compiz package in Linux)
So I just feel that I will go with HTC Hero and my main motivation is open source OS. and the simplicity of programming in this new platform (it integrate with Eclipse my favourite IDE. I tried to code for WinMo but honestly it was quite hard for me to deal with .NET things! )
I didnt choose Touch HD (or iphone) just because of their restrictions and less flexibility compare with Open sources softwares.
Hope some folks find my lines interesting and motivator
I have both and since getting my Hero the HD barely gets used (Both on seperate contracts).
I prefer it because of the screen, the way it is handled and displayed and generally the OS runs so much smoother than Windows Mobile.
If (or should I say when) Android gets ported to the HD I will try it on that and see how that goes!
But I am happy with my Hero .
mmm... I never think of that, so you mean it is possible to port Andriod for other devices? does it available for other HTC models as actual OS not simulated run on top of WinMo?

It's actually not that simple. There is an Android project ongoing for the Diamond and Raphael (Touch Pro) but it more experimental than anything. I've tried it on my Diamond and some parts of it did work but as it is now you could not use it every day.
The HD running Android and the HTC Sense UI would be awesome though
Edit: Android loads on the Diamond by running a program called Haret which loads some initial bits and then the phone reboots into Android. Next time you soft reset it goes back to WinMo.
Hello Everyone,
As you guys may have heard that the magic will be able to update to the sense ui. Do you guys think it can be ported to the dream? The official update only. Or can we just install it even though its for the magic? Please let me know.
Thank You
Its already out there man... look at the roms in the development section.
However... if you think an official release of it from HTC is going to make it run smoother on the Dream then nah. Dream just doesnt have the hardware.

an official update will make it run smoother because they have access to parts of the code that the developers here do not due to them being .odexed(allong with other things) so they could go even further with the optimisations. Although there would probably be some limitations due to hardware they could make a verson designed to run on the dream (which they probably would have if it wasnt google branded)
I wouldnt be mad if they DIDNT have an update to use the SENSE UI on the DREAM....i mean like the other guy said...its already available on here...just because main media and blogs say we wont get it doesnt mean a Dev isnt/hasnt already ported it.....i like the Sense UI at first but than I decided I like the regular Android Look alot better...
was watching a HTC announcement video and spotted the new leap feature (amoungst other things) that is coming on the hero and the desire, do you think this new sense will also come to the HD2 or the HD2 Mini ?
and if it did would it be portable to our devices ?? (please don't pick on me, i am only asking)
Well, our Sense is different from Android Sense. They have different homescreens where they can add widgets. Ours is predefined and (IMO) better laid out. Leap was meant to switch between those homescreens, whereas we can just slide over really quickly!
So, in brief, no.
However, if I may hijack this thread, any chance we'll get friendstream?!
That would be nice to have .... that is one thing I like about the entire Sense for 2.1. I am possible getting a HD2 next week through T-Mobile so I would love to see this in a future Sense update for WM.
Hi,
Well HTC announced that new Sense would be available with new Android devices and would also be available as an update to other Android devices and didn't mention WinMo. Now, as they are selling WinMo products that have an unknown future with Microsoft I'd like to think that HTC will be providing updates, including sense, to keep their WinMo line fresh before Windows Phone 7 becomes available. Alternatively they might drop Sense development on WinMo like a stone as they wont be alowed to sell it on Windows Phone 7 Series anyway (unless they can get away with a Sense Hub). I think that perhaps all HTC's interface imagineers will perhaps be working on Android from now on to be honest. I am not always right tho
Like most things on this forum regarding future developments, I don't know for sure. No one does.

ya i could agree my first batch of phones were htc then i moved off but i could say i will be getting the sensation afterall the bootloader business etc.
this is great news! glad HTC has decided to embrace the open dev community instead of creating barriers all the time.
Wow! I have been waiting for this for a long time. I hope they will release it in the summer.
so we can expext to have HTCSense on almost every Android Device? ^^
Was speaking to CM_arcee on twitter (developer for CM): "They're opening APIs to use Sense on devices that have it, they're not giving away Sense itself."
So that means Sense won't be coming to out non-HTC phone

No, this is an API of sorts into the current sense environment. Developers will be able to write apps that use sense features to give the same look-and-feel as stock sense apps on sense based devices.
Why would developers limit themselves to HTC devices only in stead of the whole Android ecosystem?
it will help the development of apps for the flyer
let's hope
WOW, incredible news.....from locking their boot loaders to almost total openness, what a turn of events. Just shows what a nice strong community can accomplish. If there wasnt XDA nothing like this could have happened.
If the new HTC dual core doesn't take much longer to release, I ll be getting that definitely. I love HTC and after HD2, I still believe that the brand can reinvent themselves and lead the new smartphone industry, as they have done before.
This is a very clever move from HTC, and one which will certainly see them gain much love from the dev community.
I'm not sure it will be total access to HTC Sense, but certainly a way to make apps/widgets etc integrate with Sense a lot better. That can only be a good thing. HTC have obviously realised that the dev community came to originally, and wants to stay with them, and they are making it worth our while.
If it will run only on HTC devices, this is the right way!
Makes sense as not to open it up to other devices Sense is what makes it stand out from other devices.HTC sense is why im married to the brand so to speak.
Worst idea ever... HTC will give you access to propriatery HTC APIs and you will be able to code apps for their phones only... worst "open" idea ever.
I sincerely hope that devs ignore this HTC ploy to better their own UI.
This is going in the same direction as the Nvidia, Qualcomm, Samsung optimised games that only work on one of the CPU. WTF.. games on android should be optimised for all CPUs or should I say CPUs should be compatible with some standard... like OpenGL that they are using dooohhhhh... Stupid SoC makers.

It gives devss the option to integrate with the Sense UI if they want to. It's up to the devs themselves whether they want to code exclusively for it. They can still code for all Android (as they could before) and then on top of that make it work nicely with Sense as well. This can only be a positive thing in my opinion.
As long as they doesn't release the entire sense source code it's not open. Period.
the first thing that came to my mind was Cookie's Home Tab from winmo. Can't wait!
Good for sense cuz they get developers but those apps made for sense will only work with sense and then more android fragmentation... the last thing we need
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Great news!
I am sorry I don't wish to be rude, but it is absolutely ridiculous that some people are trying to make this look like a bad thing. How some people can turn a news about Sense becoming MORE open, into an almost doomsday prophecy for Android is beyond me.
This is only making life easier for the devs working on Sense, which in terms means better and faster development of said UI... How can that be bad? It's not like it means that all deving for other devices is getting worse as a result..
