Hiya,
My keyboard dock battery has always been one to gradually drain regardless of whether my tablet is in sleep mode, powered off or other; this is apparently a known issue, and an update was promised to fix it. I assumed that the 209 dock update was supposed to do just that, and the 3.1 honeycomb update adds a menu option regarding putting the dock in a low power mode.
All that said, with the latest dock and honeycomb firmware, my dock battery STILL drains constantly, regardless of my usage, and then starts draining my tablets battery even if it's turned off and folded up. Do others have this issue or is my dock just naff?
Thanks,
James
no ive noticed the same thing. Then when it does charge it only shows my tablet charging for just under an hour, and it normally takes two hoursto charge with the battery depleted fully. They need a better system which shows the total charge of the battey on the dock and how much extra juice your tablet is receiving fom it, seems weird to me.
My main issue is simply that without the keyboard dock, I actually get a better battery life, which is the opposite of what I was hoping for; I dont use it that regularly, so with the dock attached the battery just drains away while it's off. I think I'm going to return the dock and see if the replacement is any better.
I just want the damn battery gauge for the dock. Then we'll know what's going on better.
This SUCKS
i agree. I separately charged both dock and tablet to full charge yesterday. After charging it was closed and not used all night. Today I used it continuously for 2 hours watching a live stream, and then an hour of playing some games. And I just got a notice that my battery is at 14%. Its hard to believe I can only get 3-4 hours from the TF and dock. This is only after 3.1, so looks like the update is the culprit.

When charging the transformer base does it also charge the main unit or do the two charge separately?
i'm fairly sure the tablet charges first then when it at 100% the base charges
Docking the transformer and plug the charger into the dock will charge both the dock and the transfomer.
cyanide1973 is correct - it charges the tablet first and then the base - so that if you want to walk out with just the tablet it is the most charged.
do you guys leave your tf plugged in at all times?

Nope, I unplug it when its fully charged and only charge when there is less than 10% left.
I ordered a USB 3.0 extension cable. One of the reviewers for it said it worked perfectly for his TF. One of the most annoying things I found was not being able to charge from the computer while I used the device. The plug was way too short for the wall. This one is awesome and very cheap. Here is a link:
6ft USB 3.0 A Male to A Female Extension 28/24AWG Cable (Gold Plated)
Quotes from the reviews of it:
"Powers and charges the ASUS Transformer tablet when used with the ASUS Transformer power adapter. Also works as data cable when connected to PC."
"i bought 5 of these for random usb charging extension for mainly tablets - ipad, transformer, galaxy tab. these work perfectly fine and charge at full speed."
It's better for Lithium-Ion batteries to drain little and top-up as often as you can so I plug it in whenever I'm not using it.

I hear a lot of back and forth about this. Do you have a source for this info? (Not doubting you, just, like I said, I constantly hear people changing their minds on this)
EDIT: Nevermind, maybe I am thinking way back or something. I am finding most info points to "Don't deep drain if you don't have to"... just google lithium ion battery care if you thought the same as me.
I'm curious, i just got my transformer today, in the instructions it says to charge it for 8 hours. But I had full charge after 3 hours. Do I still need to charge it for another 5 hours?

yes you should, the battery needs overcharged for premiere usage. but after that don't overcharging your battery in daily usage which the OP is asking.
I charge mine a few hours at night, but unplug it overnight. Since I have the dock, I don't even come close to running out of battery during the day so I leave it uncharged until night time again.
In this case, my Tablet is always 100% and my dock battery drains and gets recharged. I have no idea what my battery life will be later on hehe.
Lithium ion are good for about 300 to 400 charge cycles...usually closer to 300. It is a good idea to charge fully and then simply let it run down. ...i am a tech at a lathe national company. We see trouble tickets from users about batteries on laptops frequently. If the device sits plugged in all the time your battery will last a little over a year before it's about 50% effective. I have no source for my data, just experience.
Hope that helps

Hey everyone, so I just got a transformer + dock from bestbuy and so far I'm loving it. I started reading through the stickies to learn more about the device and it seems like a lot of people are having problems with the dock draining the battery.
One thing I noticed about the dock when I'm using it is that it constantly uses its own battery to charge the tablet. Doesn't this mean that I can only use the tablet+dock as long as the dock doesn't run out of battery? Is there a way to stop the dock from charging the tablet so I can get more use out of "netbook mode?"
In other words, is there a way to manually tell the dock to start and stop charging?
Thanks everyone
The battery of the dock discharges only until 3%.
While docked the tablet is charged from the dock. The tablet uses the docks battery for power until the dock battery is empty, then the tablet starts using it own internal battery.
The idea is that the tablet battery is kept charged (or as charged as possible) while docked so you have a full battery on the tablet when you ndock it.
So based on these two responses it's possible to use the keyboard dock all the time without the dock becoming useless after a while? Just wanted to know just in case I need to use the keyboard all day
Yes, you can use the dock all the time, until the dock battery and TF battery are empty

From what I can see, when you have the keyboard dock connected, the dock will still continue to work even if its battery has nearly run down. This is as long as there's enough battery power in the TF's internal battery to power it just enough to use the keys and touchpad. The point it'll stop working is when both batteries are nearly out, in which case just charge them .
So, short answer is yes if there's enough power left in the TF itself.
[EDIT]: Yeah, pretty much what sr-ha said lol .
So if the dock continuously keeps the tablet battery charged even when it's at 100%, wouldn't that degrade the tablet battery? Or maybe I misunderstood, does the dock stop charging at 100% and power gets taken from the dock until it's at 3%?
I appreciate the responses, still a transformer noob

The idea is to keep the tablet at full charge so if you undock it is at the maximum level.
I think the Transformer just uses the dock battery when docked since you don't see the charging icon if the tablet is at 100%. The dock drains until its 3%, then the tablet battery gets used.
Is it really that difficult to understand? The dock charges the tablet. Modern batteries are computer controlled to not overcharge so this theory of degrading the battery by charging it too much or two often is a load of crap. No manufacturer would build anything that technologically stupid anymore. Especially not a top notch company like ASUS.
The dock will pretty much always work as long as there is a charge from something. I've never seen the dock go below 3% so I assume once it gets to a certain level it does draw from the tablet battery to maintain useability until the tablet and keyboard batteries are both depleted.

Exactly what I was thinkin'
Hey everyone,
Before my Transformer arrived at my door-step...I started reading around a bit more about spare chargers and such - and came across a few threads that people had had trouble charging their TF101 because the AC Adaptor was fried/dead/whatever.
I own the B60 version and all seemed to be going well until late today. I plugged in my charger as per usual...and no charging icon. I did a few plug ins/outs and swapping the polarity of the plug to no avail. I also tried an iPad 10W charger and that did nothing; proving to me that only the supplied charger or a 12V molex rail can charge the thing.
I then thought of any changes I had done to my TF101 over the course of the last 24 hours. I remembered. I had installed Clemsyn's kernel v9 on the Revolver 2.5 ROM. So...I thought about reverting to Netformer 1.6 kernel I was using before.
After flashing, it started to charge again. (Note: I did reboot the TF101 a few times before this to see if it was a Honeycomb issue).
This is a theory anyway....if the chargers are failing on stock ROMs and kernels...well that's ASUS' fault.
Hoped I helped anyone.
i don't know about this. I got a b60 also. The charger didn't work the first night I got the transformer. Stock rrom stock everything. I played around with the charger and it worked again. Now sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Im on custom rom now and its still the same.

I was completely stock when my charger just stopped charging both the dock and the tablet. A few days later it started charging only the tablet and only doing that occasionally. It never did charge the dock again. It was the impetus I needed to finally RMA everything back to Asus for which I am waiting its return. It seems to me that this charger just can not be trusted and that is a big problem with a proprietary charger!

How many chargers have you owned, and how many of them have died? If it's a sample size of one, it's pretty-much meaningless. You only hear complaints from people who have a problem, after all.
Personally, I've used three chargers (mine, my wife's, my fathers) with three tablets and three docks, and none have had problems as yet (several months).
I have a B4O TF (fantastic BTW) and my charger died ...stock rom etc.
sent to asus...week later they still can't find my RMA (and I thought Dells customer service was bad)
I had already bought a charger for spare so I can wait
I bought a 5mm DC Female Barrel to USB Female cable - EBAY $2.99 and I'm always looking at chargers for it when I see one... Bought a I home 120V AC to 15VDC adapter at goodwill this weekend for 1.99 total cost of my new charger (others gonna stay in the drawer) 5 bucks and some change
find the Barrel to usb connector link and info about it in DevCake's thread here

i had the same problem with my charger month back when i got my pad. i called asus. it is a known problem. they sent me a new /replcemnt part for the charger. no hassles . ive been fine since
I experienced this same thing last night. I had flashed to Clemsyn's kernel Elite v12a kernel. I did a reboot however and charging resumed. I was having a hard time connecting to the computer as well. Perhaps, the kernel or settings still thought that the Transformer was connected to a PC because it will not charge from a PC unless the screen is off. There must be some script that is being interfered with here. Your theory may have some traction.
I was rooted when mine decided it didn't want to charge anymore, I had only had it for 5 weeks. I unrooted and even back to stock it still didn't want to charge. I sent it back to them and they fixed it after a week. Everything's been good so far.
My charger was working intermittently and I was near the point of returning the TF w/ dock or buying another charger. Then I tried running the charger thru a car power converter in my car and it seems that did the trick. Now it charges everytime, its worth the try.

okay so im not the only person here. my charger just stop charging yesterder. never rooted, always stock rom. i did factory reset, and still no good. now it only charges very slow, no charging icon showed. the cable is good, i can still connect to laptop.
The real question is: Is it the pad or the adapter? Because if it's the pad, that sucks big-time, if it's the adapter it is irritating but not a real problem, you could charge it via USB on your laptop/PC
I finally contacted Asus regarding to the faulty charger. And they told me to return the whole thing to the my retailer, because im still within the 30 day return period.

Charging via a PC is very limited. It will be very slow if it works at all. The charger provides higher voltage (15 vs 5) and higher current (1.2 vs. 0.5 amps). The charger and pad also expect the current on non standard pins association with USB 3 connectors.

Gotta be the adapter. I tried everything to get it working again, I noticed that when the screen was off, and I plugged it in, nothing would happen. But If I plugged it in to a smaller charge adapter, it would show the screen (as if something were connected), but not charge. So I tried my friends charger and it instantly started charging. However, After I charged it, I went back to my old charger, and it worked again. WEIRD! I have a backup adapter now just in case it happens again. Same thing happen in the past, It wouldnt charge (and I didnt have my friends), so I let it die, and charged it with my smaller adapter (which took like 1-2 hours to get 7%). Then I plugged it in again to my old adapter, and it charged it. It's almost like the charger reads it as full, and wont allow it to charge anymore. Then when some other adapter start charging, then it realizes it does need battery. No idea. Just my 2 cents.
Clemson Blades v.17 fixed it for me
Charging required a reboot after a certain amount of uptime. But, I also use Battery Monitor Widget's circle battery status icon. What was wierd is that sometimes the ASUS battery icon wouldn't show charging, but the circle battery status icon would.
Anyway, everything works for me now with Clemson Blades v.17. He specifically added in usb forced charging with v.17.
I saw the same problem with both ac adapter and computer's usb, but it was fine for a while after reboot but would stop working again after a while.

If anyone did a search, you would know that this is a common problem.
The trick is to unplug it for 5 or so minutes and it'll work again. Also, the writing on the plug should be facing up.
