Anyone has trouble setting their email account in 3.1? I kept getting a message about authentication method not supported when I setup the outgoing server. I had the same set up in 3.0 and it worked fine.
I'm having the same problem. It is not connecting my smtp on my work email with 3.1 and it didn't do this with 3.0
There is definitely a problem with the built in pop3 email in 3.1. I have exactly the same problem and the same message and havent been able to fix it yet. I think its a bug with the latest Honeycomb update.
Fortunately the Market is your saviour as there are several good email apps that work fine such as K-9 Mail (free) and Kaiten Mail (pay for app but very good).

In smtp config, wipe your pre-filled login/password fields, then uncheck authentification request box, then press next. It should work.

On the smtp (outgoing settings) screen make sure the "require sign-in" is ticked. Then delete all text from the username and password lines so they are blank. Now untick "Require sign-in" and click on Next. Also make sure the port is correct for your server.

It actually works. My bad. I thought unchecking the box is enough.

Yes I thought exactly the same thing but apparently you need to clear all the fields aswell. At least it works now which means I cant find a single thing wrong with 3.1

After weeks of trying to figure this out here are the correct settings!!
1 Under My Work Network, select (Add a new modem connection)
2 Enter a name for your connection; I used (MMS)
3 From the Select a modem drop down choose Cellular Line (GPRS)
4 Tap Next
5 In the text box labeled (Access point name) type in wap.voicestream.com
6 Tap Next
7 Leave the User name, Password, and Domain fields blank
8 Tap Finish
9 Tap the Proxy Settings tab
10 Place a check in both boxes
11 Leave (Proxy server) blank
12 Tap Advanced
13 Leave HTTP and Socks Server fields blank.
14 Enter 216.155.165.050 for your WAP server. Port # is 9201
15 Enter 216.155.165.050 for your Secure WAP server. Port # is 9201
16 Tap OK twice
Now go to your MMS program and set it up, create a new server and I called mine T-Zones. Here are those settings.
Server Name: T-Zones
Gateway: 216.155.165.050
Server Address: http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
Tap ok
Now go to preferences and enter these settings,
Connect Via: My Work Network
Connect to Server: T-Zones
(check the box to retrieve messages immediately)
And it should work.
Enjoy!
Nice job, can you send?
I'll also give this settings a try under ezWAP 2.5 and see if they work with
it.

What MMS program are you using?
Also is there an option/setting for
"Sender address type:" in this program?
If so what do you have it set to?
Also is there a setting for the "Sender address"?
If so what do you have it set as?

Yes what device and MMS program are you guys using? I am using I-mate on T-Mobile USA. Also please remember in order for you to get this to work u have to have the feature enabled on your accounts. The program I am using is Arcsofts MMS program which comes instaled on the device.

I'm using the i-mate on t-mobile with the default program built in as well.
I don't see "Sender address type:" or "Sender address".. where is this and what should it be set to?

Sender address should be set to Phone Number and Sender address should be your 10 digit mobile number. So check these settings where ever they maybe.
HTH
I got tired of having to look them up everytime I flashed a rom. Plus I figure some other people might need it as well. So here are the Free Yahoo Mail setting for use here in the US.
Type in your email address and password
Select "Manual"
Select IMAP
Change the IMAP server address to
imap.mail.yahoo.com
Port
143
Security Type
None
Select "Next"
Change the SMTP server address to
smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
Port
587
Security Type
None
Check
Require sign-in.
Select "Next"
finish up the rest of the setup as normal.
Note: These settings are for the stock email app that comes with the android OS.
(ty Britoso for pointing out I neglected to mention this)
Also, yahoo free email only works through your service providers data connection, will not work via wifi
(ty thepawn for reminding me)
===================================
I hope this helps a few people
It worked! Thank You....so much more convenient than going to browser and going into yahoo site.
thanks, but all I get in my yahoo inbox now (opened in 1997) is spam

I'd like to add (for ppl like me) that these settings are for the "Email" app that comes with your phone.
Just FYI, the IMAP settings will NOT work over WiFi, only mobile networks.
The other thing that you can do is login into the Yahoo Canada website and enable the POP3 and SMTP server - it's free.

previously i had been using pop instead of imap. the only difference is select pop instead of imap during setup, and use pop.mail.yahoo.com
try that and let me know if it works for you
Hey guys it has been working but this morning I tried sending a email from it and it came up 'Authentication failed. Please verify your username/password.'
I have checked my hotmail account on my laptop and its fine.
Any idea what up here?
Mine is playing up. Was fine but now wont let me send emails

I'm having the same issue.
I know my wife had a similar issue on her Hero once she'd done the 2.1 update, but after randomly pressing buttons it seemed to work.
I can't get anywhere with it though.
Just to add to the discussion mine seems to work well. Is it possible its a network problem?
Are you using Exchange?
Because what i know, the hotmail Exchange doesnt work in the HTC mail app (bug). You need to have the stock froyo app.

I've had problems getting changes made to mail on my DHD pushed itno my inbox - marking mail as read, deleting them etc. Will switching to the froyo app resolve this?
Could you point me in the direction of where to get the froyo app?
The problem could be caused by port blocking. This commonly happends when using a data connection provided by mobile phone providers. It could also happen when using a wifi connection depending on the actual internet provider for that wifi connection.

I would agree, but at home on my wifi I could do it on my old Touch Pro2 with no problems, but on my DHD it's not having it...
As pointed out previous it is the HTC app at fault. I've just tried it using touchdown and it works fine.

There the setting I have and it still doesnt work.
It worked fine since I got the phone but stopped working the other day
I had the same problem here on the Desire HD (Just released in Japan).
Deleting the Hotmail account from the phone and retyping in my hotmail address and password again seemed to solve the problem. (It was not sending for some reason, but it could receive.)
Try removing the Hotmail account and start again.
The phone otherwise automatically enters the details for Hotmail.
Password Length
Hooray! After hours and hours of searching various web forums, I never found an answer to the question I and several others had on why I could never get the HTC Sense Mail app to log into my Hotmail account ("Authentication Failed". And then, all of the sudden, I had an epiphany: I had strengthened up my Hotmail password before receiving this new phone and wondered if that was the culprit.
My original password was 17 characters long, so I tried using a shorter password (10 characters or less) and SUCCESS!
Although I have an Inspire 4g, the same should be true for a DHD or any other phone running Sense 2.
It appears that the HTC app is not capable of sending a longer password for verification, and likely chops part of it off when sending to Microsoft.
I've been looking for ages to find a viable solution to getting the PPTP vpn solution to work on my epic. I haven't been able to find any solutions and have only found people who are having the same problem. It just won't connect to the server.
Has anyone been using 2.2 found that the issue is resolved after the update?
Thanks much, enjoy the weekend.
Yes, it is resolved. I can connect to an encrypted pptp over wifi. I cannot over 3g still, but I'm guessingthat is because I haven't turned off sprint's proxy (can't remember where I saw how to do that.)

That makes complete sense. I knew it wasn't a server side issue

To turn off Sprint's proxy, pull up your phone dial pad and dial ##3282# It brings up the "Data" menu.
Tap on "Multimedia."
Enter your MSL.
Change the RTSP Proxy Address field to 0.0.0.0
Then change the RTSP Proxy port to 0
That's it, you're done.
