Yes, you should still be able to upgrade through Kies, but when you do you will lose Root.
You will need to Root it again after upgrading the firmware.

thank you but i afraid i have to buy a jig.... i press the vol down home power and sgs starts normally, not in download mode.......

don't ever flash or upgrade anything with a device with no 3-combo buttons. you can find how to fix it on the development section. there are two methods, odin and update.zip file. For me I would prefer update.zip if my phone is rooted, otherwise I would use odin method. good luck

heh i'm afraid I have to use Odin method to restore combo buttons....
is it safe? i don't want to brit my phone because it's touching the bootloader, very dangerous

Without ODIN you can't root your phone, unfortunately.
Just flash CF - Root for JVR via ODIN...
thanks buddy .. but this procedure is also ODIn
any particular reason you don't want to use ODIN? I was also warry of using it, but using CF-Root or fuguroot seems to be the 'cleanest' method of rooting your phone currently. There was an APK created by CF, iirc, but that method no longer works on newer builds.
The only solid method of doing it currently is flashing a rooted kernel using Heimdall or Odin. adb exploits like superoneclick don't work anymore...
Not much will go wrong using Odin for just the kernel. Chances of something going wrong are usually when flashing bootloaders and what not.
You could use an insecure kernel if you can find one then superoneclick but that requires flashing too.

[Q] Can I root without custom kernel

Hi I have an I9000 and I have upgraded the OS to 2.3.5 using the stock firmware from samfirmwares.com I think it is using Odin. The question I have and I have googled it and searched and read this and many other forums is can I root my I9000 without flashing CWM and a customer kernal?
On my 10.1 tab I just have a zip file I drop in root and reboot to the recovery menu and update it and it's done. I want the same for my I9000 (just for Titanium backup and SU) and I want to stay on the stock rom.
Thanks
Brian
Nop that isn't possible!
Only way to root 2.3.5 is flashing a custom kernel.

It is not a single-click process but two.
First of all use CF(the least complicated kernel) that applies to JVS to obtain root(from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108 ) and then flash the stock kernel(from perkas stash-- http://perka.zapto.org ).The result would be your phone has root and only the stock kernel.
Best wishes.
Thanks thats what I wanted I'll do that then. Why do you flash twice though? why CF then perka?
Thanks for your help

Twice because----
1)the CF would root your phone
and since you don't want anything other than the native/original kernel,
2)flash the kernel as suggested.
You could as well not go for the second flash but simply remove the minor tweaks and reboot for them to be removed.
No big deal/difference really.

[Q] N7000DXLA1_N7000OLBKL2_XME - Kernel (Malaysia)

Dear Chainfire,
Can you help to make CF-Root for this N7000DXLA1_N7000OLBKL2_XME - Kernel that can update from CWM?
Please go to CF-Root thread and download the firmware to revert to older rom plus root. Then
1) buy Chainfire's Odin Mobile and use it to flash N7000DXLA1_N7000OLBKL2_XME.
or
2) flash any custom ROM via CWM recovery.

I just PM to him.....hope he will reply my PM!
No feedback at all from Chainfire.......
Just update to this latest version.
Lighting fast and solves the problem of hanging and inability to read the apps in Ext SD. So fast has not experience that problem yet - touch wood.
Has a few Launcher Installed (ADW, 360, & Go Launchers) all working well.
Still has the original Tw Launcher but hardly it now.
Quite happy with the stock rom now. Has no intention to root it, yet.
Will continue to wait for updates from Samsung and hope ICS will come along soon.

how to go back to Stock GB from CM9?

I want to revert back to Stock GB from CM9. .Can i flash with mobile Odin??
flashing with Pc odin gives yellow triangle. .I dont want to that
Sure, you ca use mobile odin..
If you flash a signed Kernel from Samsung you will not get yellow triangle.. every official Samsung rom is signed, so odin will do too
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Flashing STOCK SAMSUNG ROM with PC Odin won't give you any yellow, orange or sky blue triangles, don't worry!
yTriangle P) appears only when you flash non stock ROM with PC Odin.
Flashing with mobile odin can keep your root on the stock fw, without getting the yellow triangle/Flashcounter increase.
You just have to flash an cf-root kernel afterwards to get the CWM back.
Check your CSC after flashing multi-csc.
Regards
So if i'm right:
I can go back to stock with mobile odin and a stock rom GB from cm9.
But, what about the root? it will be preerved? how??
i need a stock kernel but root! can be possible without win odin and without the rooting stock porcedure?
thanks

As I said above, just flash a pre rooted rom with mobile odin. Check development thread for pre rooted gb roms.

Change CF-root S3 6.4 to cf-auto_root

Hi, I have an Samsung Galaxy S3 updated to Jelly Bean 4.1.1 and rooted with cf-root 6.4 and I would like I have readed that chainfire think that is "better" cf-auto-root so now I would like way mobile odin pro change cf-root to cf-auto-root if this is possible.
Can you help me? I don´t have post for post in the chainfire post and I don´t know if with mobile odin I can put cf-auto-root and how I can do.
Regards
Back up your data using Titanium Backup or any other backup tools.
Then flash stock JB firmware, root it using cf-auto root.
Restore data.

Ok, thanks
Lolz just leave the **** alone. You are already on firmware you want to be and you're rooted....? Leave it alone. No point going through all that work for nothing.
**** delete custom, that is reflash custom recovery with regular one and you got yourself auto root lol. Then when you get to the point that you'll need custom recovery, do it all over again.
Highly suggest you go read again what auto root is and does without blindly thinking it's better and automatically thinking you gotta redo it. You don't!

Loving c.f.-auto_root. for now till I decide to flash again hahaha

What's the problems with 6.4 usage on jellybean?
At moment I am having major problems I first thought as nothing, but basically I am seeing increased battery drainage since I updated. I also am having some "wifi suffocation" - Wifi media would just cut and you need to disable and enable wifi to get it working again. I updated a rooted phone via kies and rooted it with 6.4 so I am trying to know if these problems are just my old settings being incompatible, CF root 6.4 and/or BusyBox or just a general NEE Jellybean error...
Thanks to all for your answers. For now I don´t will change until new firmware
regards

No problem whatsoever with cf root. Chainfire simply decided not to make and use custom recovery anymore. So he took it out. Which is his right anyways.
Your counter will still increase with auto root as with original for initial flashing via Odin. After which you can perpetually flash with 'mobile odin', preserving root. Which is probably what he wants and it makes sense for those of us that own it.
Those that want custom recovery for flashing zips will have to flash it separately. Which unless flashing with mobile odin will make the counter show 2 (auto root + recovery) instead of one with original cf root.
For those that care about warranty and Chainfire already hinted he might stop playing cat and mouse with samsung and samsung changes something so that current triangle away stops working...

Sounds good really - and seems like it at least is not CF root that is causing my problems, something is what is making me go through complete wipe and firmware reinstall probably from sammobile source. I hope I get it fixed and it is not something in the firmware itself because the Jellybean IS nice.

i flash directly the cf-auto root from my custom JB by using mobile odin and revert back to cwm due to the fonts too small.
