[Q] scratch on the screen - Acer Iconia A500

So today I noticed there is a scratch on my screen. I am very upset that this hspened so fast. Returning it is not an option. I have had it in a case since day one. Any idea on how to fix it? I hate scratches so much.

Get a screen protector?

well the screen is already scratched :/ and i hate screen protectors. any ideas on how to actually repair it?

Well if you hate screen protectors, then you're gonna end up with scratches. I know they have solutions to fix scratches, but I don't know how well they work.

Carpe diem dude, most of the times you won't even see it. I hate protectors too so I know scratches are bound to happen, I just never look for them

I am an auto detailer. Since I am not 100% sure what your scratch looks like and whether or not the screen is a plastic or other synthetic that is not glass. The easiest product you will find if in the US. Meguires in the auto car care section of box chains or auto parts stores....find Meguires Ultimate Compound. Use a small dab on a micro fiber towel and work in the direction of the scratch. The compound breaks down as you rub. May take a few passes and can be followed by Meguires Ultimate Polish/Glaze. It should be near invisible after a few passes and quick buff.
Test in an area on the edge if worried. You may also try the plastic x product meguires makes, but it is really just polish and cost more per ounce. If the scratch is light....Just use the polish/glaze first. You can always add the slightly more agressive compound if needed.
This process is how almost every detailer gets out scratches that are just in the clearcoat of a modern car.
Hope that helps.

There's a long ongoing discussion about the acer iconia has gorilla glass or not. The gorilla glass manufacturers' site (corning) states they deliver their product for the Acer Iconia Tab but an official of Acer America on being asked stated on Twitter that there's definitly no gorilla glass on the iconia. Difficult to determine what's true. But in my humble opinion easily caused scratches proof .....no gorilla glass. I hate screen protectors too but scratches much more. So i type this directly on a screen protector

This pretty good advice.
I'd also like to add that there are glass-fix compounds that MIGHT work (the stuff that Nova Glass use (if they're were ever you are). Trouble is it is 'injected' into a crack under pressure, then it sets like clear epoxy resin. It may not be suitable.
I suggest you go ask one of the glass makers (windscreen repair or household glass suppliers).

Just becareful when you are trying to repair it, a lot of those compounds used to repair glass make more scratches if not used properly.

How to remove scratches from your Trinity screen

(Not sure if there has been a post about this, apologies if there has.)
Just wanted to let everyone know that I had a fairly big scratched area, right where I write the letters for the Letter Recogniser SIP which was very annoying as it prevented the stylus from gliding smoothly. I heard that I should use Brasso (~£1.30 from your local supermarket) on the screen and it has been VERY successful. It's completely removed the scratch.
Just apply a small amount with a cotton-bud and work into the screen in circlular motion (press harder for deeper scratches). Keep doing this for about 10-15 times or until the scratch disappears.
Hope this helps anyone with screen scratches or anyone wondering about using Brasso but too scared to try.
Careful
I wouldn't recommend it as too much brasso will affect the screen, It's not just an abbrasive but solvent too so you will melt the plastic screen. Over-use will make the screen look warped.
I tried this on my M500 ages ago; now if HTC have improved on the screen then hey.. go ahead but don't say I didn't warn you.
Screen protectors are a much better option. If the screen is already marked a protector would give you a smooth finish again. If thats to expensive an option clear contact sheet will also offer the same results and a roll of that will give you screen covers for the rest of your natural life.
it would not "melt" the screen - how misguided. it is a mild solvent and abrasive and so is unlikely to cause much harm to the screen unless used constantly. screen protectors look awful on a screen - especially when the device is off.

Off topic a bit. I bought an expensive screen protector from Brando.. it works very well.. but.. for some reason it (the screen protector) got scratched. any easy way to solve it? Brasso is ok? I thought if there can be any method of using .. say car wax to fill in the grooves of the scratch.
I think it got scratched when stuff like sand got attached to my face and when I list to the phone, it stick onto the scren pctr.. and when I write on it.. it got scratched.
Just be happy you had the screen protector on!
I tried to take out the scratches from the plastic cover on my Casio watch with (Crest) toothpaste and it worked FANTASTIC!!!
Thanks a lot to the Guy who suggested this solution for PDA screens.

OK it doesn't melt the screen off but it gives it a warped look if you reflect light off it.
No tricks can help
Do not fool yourself. Brasso, toothpaste, Displex all leave marks on the screen. Check it with the device off in sunlight or a strong light source.
Brando protector is expensive.
Cheap and perfect is a new digitizer (USD 8).
I just ordered two more. And whenever I get a scratch and I have time I replace it.
hmmm... Brando's protector is selling for 9-10 dollars - you can easily find cheaper alternatives.
I guess the time and hassles (and of course the warranty alone) of replacing the actual digitizer don't really worth the few bucks saved.

so much for gorilla glass!
probably something my 8yo daughter did.
it's small -- only a couple of mm, but it's there.
hell, i watched that youtube of the guy dragging a nail across his TF.
this wasn't supposed to happen, right?
anybody else got scratches?
Nothing is impossible. I have no clue how I personally haven't scratched mine. Bezel is filled with nicks but glass is fine. I wonder if you could use a small glass repair kit or something to fill it

i've just put a cheapo screen protector on it that came with a case i bought. i hadn't bothered before, thinking that the glass was unscratchable. will source a higher quality one later.
let this be a cautionary tale to others -- especially if your kids are using yours.

It's probably from a grain of sand. Since that's one of the materials used to make glass...it will definitely scratch it.
I'd like to see some one take sand paper to the screen instead of keys and knives...that would be hilarious!
So basically...double check that the cloth you are using is free of Debris and I guess maybe blow some air on the screen first to get rid of any grainy particles?
Not as rugged as a Pantech Element, but mine has nicks on the bezel also. I put a nice screen protector on mine knowing that Im more capable than a kid of scratching it! You should upload pics of it so we can all get quezzy!

:/ hmm why so emo?
besides if it was really strong enough for a real gorilla to use i doubt it would be sold at this price anyway. even bullet proof glass scratches >_>

Love your avatar...why is his head so big? You gonna make biscuits?
Mine has scratches too, a lot small scratches on the bezel and a big one in the center. The big one is probably when the tablet was laying screen bottom on table with a lot of sugar and bread crumbs (I know, they shouldn't scratch gorilla glass). I just bought a matte protector and my screen doesn't look like a mirror anymore, scratches are almost invisible after that. It's also quite ugly, but more usefull than the shiny glass.

the matte protector i have now fitted has made my scratch completely invisible, at the expense of the screen being not so vivid; masks fingerprints too. i am going to leave it on for the present.

Mine is a local brand, but probably it's some rebranded cheap protector from China. Still, it looks almost exactly like matte LCD screen. It doesn't have glue - from what I read you should avoid the ones that use glue.

quick update:
i removed my matt screen protector and replaced it with a clear (glossy) one. the new one, while it shows more fingerprints and reflections than the matt one, is preferable to me as the display is so much brighter and more vibrant. the matt one seemed 50% dimmer. the clear one was also easier to fit without bubbling (although it still took me 3 tries!). the brand i used was ebay # 370581513587.
After not being able to find a new glass, I did some research and "fixed" my scratched screen.
Gorilla Glass is an aluminium silicate glass. There is a product by 3M called "Perfect-it III Trizact Machine Glaze" (or 3M product no. 06070 if you prefer) that contains an aluminum silicate clay polishing compound. Its expensive! I got it at NAPA, quart-size bottle costs about $65. Probably can be found online for cheaper. Its intended purpose is removing extremely fine swirl marks from high-gloss auto finishes.. something the high-end auto detailer would use on a Ferrari or something.
Fisrt i tried by hand, polishing the screen with a polishing cloth coated in the polishing compound. This worked just fine for some of the very fine scratches, but took more effort than i figured.
I eventually switched to a very soft, small polishing wheel from a Dremel polishing kit. About 1.5-2" diameter. Used a variable speed drill at a slow-to-moderate speed, I carefully buffed the screen over the scratched areas, moving in small circles over the scratches for 45 seconds to a minute with a heavy coating of the 3M compound.
In the end it worked out pretty good! Most of the scratches are totally gone, and the worst of them is barely visible now and could probably be eliminated like the rest if i repeated the process a couple more times.
I hope this info helps. Just be careful, if you don't have any experience doing this kind of thing you can easily make your screen much worse. I practiced on my old and now retired Droid Eris which also sports Gorilla Glass before I attempted to touch my precious TF101.

removing of pre-applied screen protector

Removing of pre-applied screen protector
When I got my XTZ, after removing the transport protector plastic sheets I noticed a certain resistance when touching and sliding, which makes it an unpleasant experience. I had some other tablets before and never noticed anything similar. After some hours of working and cleaning the tablet now and then, gliding got more and more smooth, it seems some evenly distributed lipids from the fingers solved the problem. What did not vanish was the slight electrostatic attraction that accumulated dust and fine fibers especially after cleaning. I'm using microfiber cloth.
Now I learned the XTZ has a pre-applied screen protector, that seemed to explained all. After some investigation and finding not very much, I decided to remove the protector. Armed with a spare blade cutter I picked a grip in one edge. Pulling it with considerable force at a very pointed angle, I slowly removed the protector completely.
As a first result I noticed a slightly sharper display, especially text seemed more crisp and contrasty.
The protector had already started to become a little milky, now highlights had no more halos at all.
No wonder, the electrostatic attraction vanished completely, cleaning the display leaves no residue on the surface anymore. Also the gap between glass and plastic frame does not collect particles this easy as with the protector.
To get a smooth experience for touching and sliding some 'use and cleaning cycles' were needed, as with the protector. Only a very little sticking of the fingers when typing is palpable now, but maybe this will disappear too.
Protectors are also known to hinder glass shattering of crashing devices. This might be well true for phones, but would it also have effect on tablet sized glasses? And, how often did my mobile take an unintended flight, oh yeah some times. But the well cared for tablet? Never - up to now.
At a last consideration, I can't imagine to have lost guaranty by removing the protector, when it is worn-out some day, it has to be replaced.
If you plan to remove your protector too, be very slow and careful! The force you have to pull with is remarkable, take care also on proper holding the tablet and not to damage any buttons or water blocking caps!

You have NOT removed any screen protector at all, what you have done is remove the factory fitted screen anti shatter membrane! A screen protector can be placed on top of the membrane and is sold either by Sony sores direct or other brands via Amazon et al.
I am always simply amazed how purchasers of such devices appear so unable to read the manual that comes with it and avoid making such an awful mistake.
Further. To write here that you removed the anti shatter membrane can only give other members misinformation.
Please do some research before you take such an unwise action then write about it here.
I dont understand why some people wants to remove the antishatter film..
Is it necessary or just "wants" to remove it.

AND Plastic is not Glass
My anti shatter protection is gone and I didn't miss it (yet). Now after some time without it I sum up, as I already wrote in my opening post
- the screen isn't electrostatic anymore
- screen is easier to clean
- fingers slide smoother
- display is sharper
WARNING
Remove it at your own risk!
Freedom is to do it anyway ...
After a long consideration I have also decided to remove the anti-shatter screen. To me it makes the feel not so great as sheer glass, it collects a lot of dust and fingerprints and also I believe that it makes the screen not so sharp.
I waited until I got my case and now I have it I already once tried to remove the screen but couldn't get hold from the corner and I was a bit afraid to damage the table if use too much force with the knife.
Bad thing about this is that you actually lose your warranty. But not so afraid of shattering the screen as I never use any screen membrane protectors and only one device (SGS3) I have managed to shatter the screen after dropping it down.

I totally agree with this with certain provisos. May I go off topic for just a second? We enjoy 'freedom of speech', does that freedom mean we can enter a cinema packed with people and shout FIRE? We have the freedom to do such a thing but to me freedom should come with responsibility. Here is my point. It is fine, though unwise, to remove the shatter proof film. There are two follow ups to that. One being that this is a public forum and is read by members new to the world of technology and may copy such an action. Secondly it is my bitter experience that those who abuse their devices are so often the first to complain when things go wrong?
Sony advertising is not in my opinion very helpful and honest regarding the Z mobile phone and the Z tablet. Sony clearly show in their advertising the tablet being used in a swimming pool. If you read the manual you will see the device is water resistant to a given industry criteria BUT Sony at the same time write not to expose the tablet to chemicals? Swimming pools contain the some of the very chemicals Sony write we must avoid?
To me the water resistance is just a protection against accidental contact with rain or tap water. It is Sony themselves that show clips that are in reality contrary to their own set of criteria. Make no mistake if one uses the tablet or phone in the sea or swimming pool and the seals become corroded Sony agents will be the first to refuse warranty work if the phone or tablet becomes damaged. All the Sony agents need to do is refer to the basic user manual.
Like it or not some owners are taking their tablets and phones surfing, white water rapids, swimming, in the sea, sauna etc. There are You tube clips of some owners cooking their devices in soup and some utter idiot cooking the mobile in chocolate?
To close. I agree we are free and that freedom has come at great cost so lets respect that freedom and use it with responsibility in particular when posting on a public forum?
I thought the purpose of the ASF was not to prevent the glass screen from shattering/cracking, but to prevent shattered/cracked glass from falling out, and potentially causing damage to persons holding the device.
I am very careful with my tablet (it was not cheap), I am confident that it will not be damaged. I have removed the ASF and agree with qshoo - the screen is much smoother, and clearer, and best of all it does not attract dust. I previously had an anti-glare screen protector on my tablet, but decided that it did dull the screen, and was less virbrant. For the moment I am happy without any sort of film on the screen.

I had some trouble, and kind of chipped away at the edge of the ASF, then it came away, I was a little worried to start with. I used a very small orange handled kitchen knife:fingers-crossed:
I used a cutter with a new blade moved out some centimeters, working only with the first segment of the blade. A 9 mm blade is a little flexible and this helped coming beneath the ASF without cutting the tablets body ...

i agree fully with your point of view. As a matter of fact i wont even think of removing the shutter proof covering since sony has reasons for applying it in the first place. it has been stated that this cover is very expensive ( costs some $40/50) and will void the warranty. but still if people choose to remove it its their prerogative.
honestly speaking for me the argument that the feel is great, scrolling is easier, viewing is great is all propaganda to give validity to their decisions.
Propaganda?
I was ready to apply a new protector if the protector-less operation wouldn't work out and if the people who advocate removing the protector would be wrong.
But This - Was - Not - The - Case. Bam. I would feel the application of a new protector as a deterioration, a ho-hum compromise. But why should I? I always handle devices very careful and am not afraid of screens breaking. And if it should happen - my god, such things happen, the world won't end. I'm not like these overly German Germans who look for security, security, security in all areas of their (boring) lifes and even drive bicycles with ludicrous helmets on their heads...
How can you judge it if you yourself never tested the tablet protector-less yourself??
... so I'm one of the few Germans who removed their screen protector? ...
why not sunbath naked in a beach at noon without any sunscreen and then boast i love to experiment.
jokes apart, for me $599 is way too much to experiment. but yes if the screen cracks coz of my mistake with or w/o a screen protector or with or w/o a case i will be sad coz it was my hard earned money.
p.s my XTZ is not covered by any warranty.

Stay clear of Ghost Armor

Dear god what a frigging fiasco. Not only does every speck of dust adhere to the back of the screen protector, despite the application solution, but said dust particles seem to ave seriously deformed the plastic, so now the screen protector has zits.
Moving on to the entirely insufficient carbon fiber skin, there's not enough pieces to cover the sides, and the back piece is cut too small, always leaves a couple of millimeters of glass visible around the edge.
Moral:do NOT buy for the Xperia Z3!
I'm overnighting a new Skinomi setup....

Thats your opinion.
I have it as just a screen protector and it is fine. Much better than other protectors because with a case on it, it doesn't lift the screen protector edges.
The only issue I have with it is the screen oils up bad from fingerprints, easily fixed with one or two wipes over fabric
I guess this is an opinion too?
All that shows is you suck at applying screen protectors... lol.
You're supposed to install screen protectors in a dust free environment. Try turning the hot water on in the shower and waiting ~10 minutes, then try to install it.
Clearly you don't know very much.
Ghost Armor is the absolute worst of the wet-applied screen protectors. The whole idea behind wet-applied ones is so that the fluid captures the dust so it can be squeegied out from underneath the screen protector. Ghost Armor's adhesive, however, seems to grab onto every speck of dust it can find (apparently it's also got a static attraction component) and literally will not let go. Not even tape pulls it off, you have to soak it down and then scrape it off with a fingernail...at which point more dust gets pulled in and adheres. Any dust. Even in a humid bathroom. Horrible design.
Skinomi, Zagg, ArmorSuit, all of them work wonderfully in the same environment and under the same conditions. Ghost Armor? They can't even measure phone dimensions or create properly cut and sized skin pieces, so I guess asking them to create a proper wet-applied TPU screen protector is too much to ask.

I have used Ghost Armor many times, but have quit using wet-applied protectors in favor of glass protectors. (If I use one at all)
I guess your dust is more dusty than my dust.
I installed cheap mumbi display protectors on the front and back when i got the phone. Both without a single spot of dust or air under them. I don't even want to install my screen protector made of glass, as i then have to pull of the perfect installed normal protector.
Before installation, i had to wipe the screen several times as there was always new dust on it, i did not apply them wet or in my bathroom. Absolutely no problems, so i don't understand how there can be so much dust under the protector if anyone knows what he's doing.
Again, I can get any brand on completely dust-free, except for these things. Ergo, something is wrong with these things.

It's completely possible you had a bad install...
Perhaps they use a better adhesive. I've never had any problem installing Ghost Armor, or any other "brand" screen protector.

Maybe so. I think I read at one point that their protectors could optionally be installed dry, so maybe they're designed that way. But better isn't necessarily good. And I notice their instructions specify a wet install now.
Incidentally I just tried scraping off the dust and reapplying the thing. Only this time in my relatively dust free datacenter. And guess what? It managed to find some dust from somewhere. Damn, they should compete with Swiffer.
Anyway my emergency Skinomi will be here on Thursday. In the meantime this screen is driving me nuts though.

Interesting, I have used it on four phones, and not a single spec of dust on any of them if you prepare your surface correctly, I normally keep the phone screen facing the ground to stop dust settling on it, then apply holding the phone sideways as to keep as smallest surface area exposed to falling dust

Best Full glue/adhesive tempered glass ,case friendly for s8/s8+/n8 Discussions

I want to open a discussion about full glue / adhesive tempered glass case friendly. What do you think is the best and where do you buy it? let's discuss!
I have tried the following, all without success:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074HZV81Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_7adlAb2B1WK44
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075XN6L5Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_SbdlAbD6GRT26

Glass ones felt ok, but left an air bubble (gap) between the two pieces of glass. Adhesive not very sticky, fell off very easily. Took off completely after 2 days.
Rubberized ones showed imperfections very easily, and felt weird. Definitely reduced the appearance of the phone. Very distracting. Took off completely after about 15 minutes of use.
I fully suspect these adverse experiences have nothing to do with a particular brand, but the solution in general... Currently have no screen protection on at all now.
This is the best full adhesive. It's alittle thinner than the average glass believe its .28

May not be exactly what you were looking for but, I used this.
Pros:
Perfect install, no air bubbles. No adhesive showing. The best one I've used ever in all the phones and screen protectors I've owned.
Cons:
Its expensive. The price went up since when I bought it from $30 to $45.

19 STEPS to the install process!? Intense...
And comes with a free Apple Magic Mouse stand...
So you have one of these installed? If so, please share more: how long, any imperfections after install, how durable, concerns about removal later, etc.
Thanks

I've had mine now for about a month. Looks brand new still. The only main thing to be sure of is getting rid of the dust and any particles on the screen. They will show up. The kit comes with alcohol swabs and dust stickers. Removal is quite simple as it peals of like any other protector would. With clean up such as alcohol wipes. I should also note, that any minor scratches on the screen will be filled with UV glue that is supplied with the kit. This causes the screen to look brand new when the protector is applied. So that's a nice bonus if your screen has any scratches. Not sure if it could hide a deep scratch though.
If you get it, you should watch the official video first.

Read all precautions. Be patient and the results are perfect.
Then, this one. This is the newer 2017 install kit. (Which is what you will most likely receive.)

I'm pretty happy with it. You may be able to find a better deal than on amazon. You'd have to look around though.
There is some light bleeding from the edges of the protector, and is indeed quite apparent on light backgrounds. To me however, this is a small price to pay for the perfect tempered glass protector. This is the best protector I've ever owned.

The tempered glass screen protectors you linked are not full adhesive. The OP was asking about full adhesive protectors.
As far as the rubbery wet install protectors, if you only left them on 15 minutes then it's no wonder you weren't happy. If you read the instructions, they explain they can look bubbly and distorted for the first 12-24 hours. I'm currently using the Armor Suit one on my Note 8. It's smooth as glass, crystal clear, and you'd never know it's on there. My wife has the Illumishield wet apply protector on her S8+ and again, you'd never know it waa there.
Install it at night before you go to bed. Make sure to get all the dust off the screen, use plenty of of the application solution, and take your time lining it up. Then squeegee all the liquid out from under it. Once installed, let it set overnight. The bubbles go away after 12-48 hours. I've done these enough, I rarely have any bubbles at all immediately after installation. Any rubbery feeling goes away after a day or two.
