2.3.3 --> 2.3.4 migration is really easy, so it's not really surprising.
SGS 2 is the best smartphone at the moment (at least Samsung phone) so it's not shocking they won't abandon it in first two months
Hopefully WiFi battery drain fix is going to be included in the next 2.3.4 ROM

No drain from my WIFI. I actually get more drain during idle from cellular packet data signal. You freeze all the crap-apps using Titanium yet?

Anyone got a link to something showing the changes in 2.3.4?

Sorry, no link. But 2.3.4 is supposed to fix
Android OS eating battery life for ALL dual core devices.
Optimisations in battery life and wifi.
and hopefully, somehow, it'll speed up the lag/wake up issue with the GSII (although I doubt that)

Wonder if they will do a OTA update or release a newer KEx with 2.3.4 through kies.
Either way if it improves the battery life that can only be a good thing

well, the guys from samfirware also announced froyo for sgs and in 24 hours was online ( the betas, not the kies version ). so i'd trust them with the news. all we can do is wait anyways

I wouldn't expect 2.3.4 if SGS2 is not explicitely said, it was not in the line that was expected to get the update.

The SGS2 is their flagship, of course you will see it updated and most likely before all other phones too

"new Samsung phones"
I interpret that as SGSII

They supported sgs really well-all the way to gingerbread so i think its a no brainer well get this. Id put money on it well get ice cream early next year too.

I wonder how people like myself who don't use kies, will get the heads up on when the update is available if it's not going to be distributed through OTA. It'd be awesome if it was an OTA update though.
I guess only time will tell.

LOL, OK, so now we know for sure that it won't be out by Friday. Or ever.
Do we have to play this game again? I think everybody already know the answer considering our froyo wait.
I hate "Top Flight Security Mods"
I have a friend who works in the Sprint retail store and he told me that developers at Samsung are currently working on a Gingerbread for our Epic4g. He said the latest build was ZM>9000 and that they let him test it and it was pretty awesome.

It will feel horrible because it will be a buggy mess. Let them get Froyo sorted out before they begin to use this as a buggy base of their Gingerbread build. I do believe Samsung will deliver Gingerbread, but dont even think it will be before Summer 2011. I have nothing against Samsung really. They could do better with software support though. And you will find ridiculous skepticism among people at XDA for anything positive that is "supposed" to be coming from Samsung in the future.
Thats true, well then, I guess, well just wait and see, anybody else want to share opinions?
updates!
I personally do NOT think we will ever see another update past froyo...
We might get a froyo update to fix bugs and what not but as far as 2.3 ect, they will leave the epic by the wayside and focus on the galaxy S2 series and other newer phones. The epic was just a complete failure and they know it, thats why they are come out with galaxy S2.
well idk, its a tough call...
took a long time for froyo...
but then you can look at it like "well samsung sees how the US folk are all pissed off so they might start trying to release more updates bla bla"
if the epic does get gingerbread, dont expect any update past that..because past that Samsung will expect us to do our part and buy another Samsung device.
I think personally Gingerbread will come just to rebuild some goodwill with the people of this country. Then maybe with that, we would buy the next uber Samsung phone. At least by getting Froyo, my Evo owning friend can now shut up how his Evo is soooooo much better than my Epic because it hbas Froyo (even after showing him my pics and videos look better, screen looks nicer, can play more vido formats natively) because that was the only thing he could point at. Now we're even.
If Gingerbread comes, it's not going to be for a while; otherwise, why would they have bothered releasing FroYo?

Galaxy S Gingerbread update soon. Due at end of March!

According to Android Central: http://www.androidcentral.com/european-galaxy-s-gingerbread-update-coming-end-march
Link to Samsung Romania post: http://www.facebook.com/SamsungMobileRomania/posts/189412624430604
A post on Samsung Mobile Romania's Facebook page seems to suggest that Romanian Galaxy S phones (and presumably other European models) may see an official update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread by the end of March.
Translated into English and cleaned up a little, the post reads:
"The update to version 2.2.1 for Galaxy S will be available until 20 March, and Gingerbread (2.3) until the end of the month."
Our Romanian is a little rusty, but we think it's safe to assume the last part of that statement means either "it'll arrive by the end of the month", or "it won't arrive until the end of the month". Either way, it looks like the European Galaxy S could soon claim bragging rights as the first non-Nexus phone to get an official Gingerbread update. HTC has announced that Gingerbread will be coming to some of its older phones, but these updates aren't due until sometime in the second quarter.
Samsung Romania also adds that two of its budget phones, the i5500 Galaxy 5 and i5800 Galaxy 3, will be updated to Froyo by Mar. 20 and Mar. 31 respectively. [Samsung Romania Facebook via Crave]

The universal kernel is for 2.2 and 2.2.1 ROMs only.
Also, it's not a universal kernel, it's a universal settings.apk that's been fixed for us.

I don't really know the history of the Vibrant, (Picked it up off Craigslist 2 months ago) but this at least gives me some hope.
God, getting Gingerbread on the Vibrant would be AMAZING. It would increase the speed, and once the source is released, we would see some awesome gingerbread ROM's for it.

Hopefully somebody will be able to port it quickly if T-Mobile foes not roll out the rom in the same timeframe...

Was thinking the same, plus they seem to be miles away from a good fw release, since day one the major issues have been the AOS bug, the pink spot camera, the gradients, all still present in KG3, which even added more bugs like the fc while playing flash content...

Keep in mind the tweet's from samfirmware, not Samsung. Since May, he/they have posted about five "X is coming by X" messages and they've been wrong all five times. With phone's already shipping with 2.3.4 in some parts of the world I'd say we'll start seeing updates soon. Maybe I should tweet that - it would be as accurate a guess as samfirmware's.

Why should they? They've committed to nothing at the time we bought the phone and publicizing dates and then potentially not hitting them would just piss people off. Besides, this way, it's kind of like Christmas.

I was talking with Samsung today and I asked "so we can expect the 2.3.4 in next 30 days for sgs2" and Sammy guys told me it will be before but they dont know exactly when still no information... They dont know the date ...
Also they said that they are planning to release Ginger for SGS next month (or this for some countries dunno) and 2.3.4 version in september - October
which firmware KIES need detect to make the 2.3.4 available?
2.3.3 with 2.3.3 kernel and 2.3.3 CSC??
i am interested in the answer to that last post also.
i updated my s2 to KE7 through odin as KIES wasnt offering it to vodafone handsets quick enough. will kies even offer it to me when it is available?

LOL, ICS.
Even if it is released October/November, we still will have to wait quite some time for it.
I am not quite sure but, despite the fact that Nexus S and Galaxy S are almost the same phone, it took Samsung like 3-4 months to update to Gingerbread.
(If I recall right the Nexus S was released in January and the update rolled out in May)
Whatever, I hope there will be leaked firmwares so we can update anyways.

SG3 is not planned for Gingerbread firmware SamFirmware confirmed

Hey friends!! Like all of you i wanted to know if our beautiful device will eventually receive an update to Gingerbread 2.3 in the future, so as we (Pocketdroid) promised to contact SamFirmware. We got our answer and they said such update is "NOT planned," for Samsung Galaxy 3 Apollo (GT-I5800).
Short and precise answer from them which is very disappointing but at least now we know what to expect. Check the screenshot I've made with SamFirmware answer via Twitter account.

Humm, I don't know, I hope I'm wrong, but I see it pretty clear (No Gingerbread). Let's pray for CM7 port...
I think everybody expected that there will be no official gingerbread update
doh! very sad 2.2 sucks
that was expected, not surprising at all...what is sad is that many much inferior phones have got gingerbread...
I can understand Samsung but I'm very disappointed.
But why should they bring Gingerbread to our "low level" phone and support their expensive phones on the same time. They just want to sell their expensive phones so in their mind if we want Gingerbread we should buy a more expensive phone.

Exactly, that's the point. They provide a few updates in the first months/years of the "phone life", and then, all of their resources goes to the new or more expensive phones, and If you want the last Android version, you have to pay for it... in the form of a brand new phone. That's bussines. And it sucks
