Wow that was painful to read.
Why don't you just delete less stuff? The streak has tons of internal storage plus the sdcard, and several of those things dont run in the background without first opening them (for example: live wallpaper, keyboards, and widgets).
Indeed. I still have 1.2GB left in the internal SD and have only deleted Dell Stage, Dell Sync, and several pieces of bloatware like Oovoo, Evernote, Pageonce, Amazon MP3, and Zinio Reader.
dotdevil, did I mention that I hate stream of consciousness posts? You don't have to be perfect but you DO have to make an attempt to post in full sentences so that we can read it. You'll be more likely to get help that way in the future.

Well my friend it sounds like you and I are very much alike. What I would suggest is flashing StreakDroid 1.9 but with the noapps option in the install.txt file and that will get rid of bloatware. As far as storage, I changed out my factory 2GB class 2 card with a hot 4GB Class 10 and it's a different animal, along with the bone stripped StreakDroid, the perfmod AND SetCPU at 1190 mhz, my Streak screams like never before....
That's my personal suggestion.... It would be pretty damn hard to install 4GB worth of apps
How did u replace the on-board memory?

Yeah man, it took me about 20 minutes to cut into the Streak because I didn't have the tools to take it apart. I used one of those model knifes and was really careful about it. There's nothing left to do after that except replace your chip. You put it in and boot up and the Streak will take care of the rest, formating and partitioning. Then flashed a new ROM. Entire process took about 35 minutes. You can find the thread over at MODACO under something about changed the LCD screen. It begins with a guy taking his Streak apart but about the 5th post down another fella mentions exactly where to cut, although I was a little more precise with my cut and even was able to keep the little border that keeps the SD chip tight in its spot
EDIT: Here's the link!!http://android.modaco.com/content/dell-streak-streak-modaco-com/336477/lcd-replacement-and-internal-sd-upgrade/
Go down to the 7th post from Techneut and he mentions it and in post further down you get pics

One question : do u find the 4gb card consumes more battery current than the original card?
Sent from my Dell Streak
To answer both questions presented to me:::
I don't see any difference in battery consumption with the new card.
ANd yes, the Streak will do everything.... At that same link he posts screenshots of what the Streak is doing as it's setting up the card. It used to be that with older versions of Android, special scripts had to be written to format and partition a card greater than 2GB but now you can go up to 4GB with no extra input.
You install the card and boot up and it starts the process on its own. When it gets done, you boot into recovery and reinstall your ROM, that simple
Question..... I can't find a class 10 in store..... I think there is only one other place to look... but is it a must that the card be a class 10??

Honestly I wouldn't fool with it if you weren't going to class 10. Have you looked on NewEgg for the Patriot LX series, that's the one I used.
What I'm having trouble finding is the 16GB class 10 for the external memory. The best one is supposed to be the a-data and it's out of stock everywhere
Hey what's up...... I found the memory card... class 10 4gig..... and I swapped... n everything...... I cannot lye...... you was 100 percent correct....... this thing is fast now..... lol..... very fast..... I can tell by the responce time just by touching ... or typing.... that everything is faster...... this should be pushed more to be done..... this is awesome .... the only thing that go me nervous was taking of the top n bottom tabs off.... but that wasn't even a big deal..... soon as the screws come out... the rest pops off... and the card is right there in ya face..... I gently lift the card up over that rubber and wiggled it out.... and powered on..... configuration the card it self....done!.... after that it attempted to boot.... but I cut it back off and flashed the rom..... good to go...... I thought this was my baby before...lol..... I can't take it outta my hand as if I'm the father and it was born a minute ago....lmao

Any one else having issues with the photo album,
I'v taken out the crappy supplied transcend micro sd and put in a sandisk one in instead.
The album takes for ever to load up the pictures, then when you click on one album, it freezes forever and then 5 minutes later tells you

Firstly, I don't like facebook nor am I even signed up to it, I make my friends in real life,
remember this is a website to help people out, I don't understand why you had to make the comments you'v made, if you think I'v done something wrong by making this thread, either ignore it or report it to a mod.
Anyway back to the point,
yes, it does indeed literally hang for nearly 5 minutes, loads one or two pics but the remaining 99% stay blank, stays like that, screen wont respond and so on.
And if it took even 10 seconds to load, I wouldn't mind, as I also use Windows Mobile which can be laggy, but 5 Minutes.
An yeh barryallott, please to do not respond to this unless you really have something constructive to say, I dont need you to tell me how much a waste of time this thread is.
Mine hangs occasionally on the albums, and can take up to 10-15 secs to load each album. I reckon it's just a fact of life at the moment- I can remember the first real implementation of HTC Album on the Touch Dual, and the program has come a long way since then on Win Mob. This is the first Android implementation and for the most part it works well for me.
If you are seriously getting 5 minute lag (or anything over 30 secs), I'd suggest getting a taskmanager from the market (I use "Task Manager") and check how many apps you have open, and what resources they are using. It took me a little while to realise that Android leaves stuff running in the background in a Win Mob fashion, which is ace as multitasking is a must for me, but it doesn't half take up resources if you aren't careful!
the other app I'd consider to be essential is '3g watchdog' which you can set with your data limit, and it keeps a tally of all your use in mb and as a percentage- Orange aren't getting a penny out of me for going over the 500mb limit! I wish it wasn't a trade off in the UK between awesome data bundles and no reception with T-mobile, or just about bearable data bundles and amazing reception with Orange...

point taken..
On the G1 and Magic, on first use of an app that stores stuff on SD, it seems to take a while, and this seems to be mainly down to it creating a thumbs database on the device. Once created, the subsequent access times are MUCH faster. I don't know that this is true for the HTC album, but part of the issue might be this, especially if it never gets time to completely load the pics so every time its trying to finish making a Thumbs database for you.
From the sound of things I think its a combo of issues - the quality of SD card probably having an effect, the creation of a Thumbs database on first access, and possible glitches with the HTC Albunm software that need ironing out. Good news is they all sound very solvable - So give it some time to load.... and think about getting a class4 or class6 SD card.
Much love

Yep your right, theres a folder called .thumbnails in the DCIM folder.
I'v got an Sandisk 8GB class 4 Micro SDHC, so that isn't the issue.
I agree with you that it's most likely to do with the album software.
I exchanged my phone today at the orange shop, and the guy told me that the delay for the release of the Hero was because they had to send the handsets back due to the reading/loading issues. And he happily exchanged it.
Problem still persists, but I'm sure just as you said, that future software revisions may iron things out.
Thanx
I have been playing around with ATT Android phones over the last several months. I started with a Nexus One, nice phone very fast. Then purchased an Aria for the fun of it... again fast phone but too small. Lastly yesterday I picked up the Captivate, and with a 1ghz, the Aria seems faster than this phone. Seems to lag between screens and boot. Is it just me or anyone else see this? Is there a quick fix for this? Anyone?
Oh I hate touchwiz, worthless crap for a UI.....loaded ADW launcher instead
thanks
Larry
It really is a software thing with Touchwiz. After I installed Launcher pro I never looked back and it has been a lot faster.
There may be a bunch of apps running slowing the phone down. I have Advanced task killer, and kill a bunch of app every once in a while when It starts feeling slow.

Where did you find this Launcher pro, and how much faster is it than stock?
Check #17 out in this post. The Euro version owners have known about this for some time.
There are some fixes - but, most likely not until we can get some custom ROMS.
Launcher Pro helps a lot, just search the app market for it.
Ive been doing side by side comparisons of my N1 running CM6 and the Captivate all day. The Captivate is faster 95% of the time. Both running ADW launcher.
You can load ADW or LauncherPro from the Market. When you set as default home, you will not be able to use "Touchwiz" widgets.......

A crapload faster. After installing it, the device is like lightning , haven't had any pauses. Just search the market. Think it is a beta.
Yes to all new samsung galaxy S owners get rid of the ****ty touchwiz launcher it sucks and its laggy as hell, get launcher pro instead.
whats the best widget pack to replace the touchwiz ones
is there a way to port sense widgets? (push from a htc/pull to captivate or something)

eventually. Widget packs.. hmm you should just try out new stuff, explore and what not
Also, new news so to speak - LauncherPro will be coming out with a lot of integrated widgets that are similar to the SenseUI widgets.
Koxx - here on xda has made some really great widgets. I think I have purchased them all. MoonSpoon (used to be a very active themer and now is a lurker due to being busy elsewhere) made themes for all of Koxx's widgets.
If I just want to go back to the default Android drawer can I install the Launcher.apk from a Cyanogen 5.8 rom?
Even with Launcher Pro there seems to be some lagging issues. On the Vibrant thread, the a subject on Fixing Stalling/Lagging. On the vibrant it seems you can partition your SD card and have the files run off of it. They said that it runs faster on the sd card then the built in memory card. I trying to do this procedure but kind of stuck. I can't seem to get the phone in download mode. Still searching around if i can find out i let you guys know. Meantime check out the thread and if you find out or know how post it up on the Captivate side. Not much instructions on "HOW TO MOD CAPTIVATE" in our thread.

I did it. It works great.
No more stalling at the moment, and my Quadrant score went up 100 points as well.
But be sure to follow the steps, and make sure you have enough room in data/data, and keep in mind that you can still fill data/data up with app installation. Google Earth is particularly bad about eating space here.
And keep in mind that the Galaxy S people that did this find that eventually it starts to stall again, so this is a band-aid.
When I get home tonight, I'll try the better, more effective SD card method, don't have an easy way to make an /ext3 partition on an SD card at the moment.

You need an external SD card, a program that will let you partition the ext3 format, and then you just need to follow their commands. Where are you getting stuck, maybe I can help guide you.

There's a few tools, but most will require a live CD to utilize.
Obviously I'm gonna root it straight away. But are there and must do's when you get a new N1?
Check for obvious hardware mal-functions before rooting (well unless your not gonna unlock bootloader).... Basically use every feature on the phone (GPS, WiFi, BlueTooth) then make sure you have no stuck or dead pixels in the screen, then make sure headphone jack works well as well as the trackball.... After that, I personally called it good.......

Yeah, wait at least a week before rooting.
Do these right away:
> Put a screen protector on. I recommend Clarivue. They got lifetime replacement warranty.
> Buy a case from Case-Mate, Seidio or Otterbox.
Skip the case and screen-protector. If you want you can use the included pouch. No need to make it ugly by using a case.
While in settings, enable USB Debugging and Unknown Sources.
Definitely use a screen protector if you don't want to clean fingerprints off the screen every 15 seconds.

Charge it well, Protect the screen, get a case if you want.
Upgrade to stock Froyo if it's not running 2.2
Install a lot of stuff make yourself a good idea of what you like and dislike, then once you know what are the apps you will be using reformat and start from scratch.
That would be the point where I decided to root, but I did test a few rom making sure which one I preferred.
Also partition your SD card with a EXT3 or EXT4 partition so that you can use up to 512MB of memory for your app, this is off course if you are the planing to install many apps, if not you may be happy with google extended partition.
Take note that so far only maybe 20% of application are configured to use the google move2sd feature, this may change with the current wave of froyo OTA upgrade for quite a few handset.
Once your rooted, get titanium backup you can also consider rom manager and root explorer. You may also consider wavesecure that allow you to recover your phone if lost or stolen...
If at that point you are still not happy get a gun or an Iphun...
Well for me screen protector at least, and a case maybe. still undecided. I'm coming from a hero so I know around about what apps I want to be using but Ive been researching some more cpu and graphically hungy stuff that I couldn't use on my hero. Gonna give psx4droid a whirl and see what its like
Thanks for the tip on the partitioning. I'll give the stock rom a go and root it after a week like you suggested. Is there any particular rom that stands out from the crowd as being the best?
Trust me. You would want a screen protector AND a case.
Good investment for a good phone.
I've tried 'em all and I always go back to LeoFroyo. No junk whatsoever.
check if your N1 has an AMOLED screen or a Super LCD.
What I did was completely sterilize it with rubbing alcohol cause I got it off ebay. Second, I waited like a week to root. And Now I am running CyangenMod. Have fun my friend
How can I tell weather its super LCD or amoled? And which is better?

Hi guys I finally got my arc today. In love with it more than I was with my x10i and desire hd. Anyway I have a couple of enquiries.
First of all what is the 2nd mic used for?
Secondly, does the noise reduction option in call settings help and if so how? What difference is there in it being on and off?
Last but not least...ive seen two or three threads regarding 0% battery...what is this issue actually about?
Thanks and looking forward to join in with discussions and other threads.
Sent from my LT15i using Tapatalk
The 2nd mic is used for the noise cancellation - it record the background noise separately from the main mic then will subtract the one signal from the other to try and help reduce/remove it.
As for how effective it is, I've never knowingly used it, so I can't comment.
The 0% battery issue seems to be some sort of problem related to trying to flash/root the handset in a particular way.
There are solutions out there, so if you're afflicted by it there are ways of sorting it but I wouldn't worry unless it happens.
your second question is the answer to your first. the 2nd mic is on the back and is supposed to monitor the sounds of the area around you, to then cancel that noise whilst on a call. can't say how effective the noise reduction is, but i guess its working well since people rarely have any issues hearing me in busy, loud environments.
the 0% battery issue is only if you're rooting or flashing on your handset from what i understand. so if you wish to stay with stock SE firmware, you wont have this issue. SE is updating their firmwares reasonably quickly anyway, so if you don't root it, its not a major issue (well not for me anyway).
hope you like your arc, love this phone <3
Thank you so much guys. For a newbie to this phone can anyone give me any tips and tricks? And have any of you guys experienced the crack that everyone is on about?
Sent from my LT15i using Tapatalk
Yeah, I've got the crack(s).
Never noticed 'til I went looking for them though, so it's not worth worrying about IMO.
So far I've dropped the phone on concrete and tiles about 4 times and haven't got the cracks, so I've been pretty lucky. I do have some rough corners as a result, so make sure you take good care of it!
I find that the phone has nowhere near enough internal memory, so if you download many apps, you'll need to start moving as many as you can to the sd card. Note that apps stored on the sd card cannot have widgets, so if you want a specific apps widget, it'll need to be on internal memory
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App
I have the cracks over the sensor that others have experienced, despite never dropping my phone. I think the plastic is not the best quality and tbh you can feel how fragile it is when you first pick it up. My old phone was HTC HD2 and felt like a brick compared to my Arc. I'm still umming and arrrring about sending it in for repair......
As for any tips? There is a thread here which you might find useful

It's not worth worrying mate, it doesn't get any worse and it doesn't affect the phone in any way.

Cheers mate. Just another quick question to everyone. How many apps have everybody got on their device? My reason for asking is because my internal memory went really low. I dont really wanna move apps to sd if I can help it. Edit: I have 70 apps installed in the downloaded section ofmanage application including market youtube and maps. Is that good? Keeping in mind two or three of them are either licenses eg titanium pro and some widgets

I have 146 apps installed in my Arc and I moved it all to SD Card, if possible..
I have ~150 apps in total installed and have 41Mb free on phone memory. All have moved to SD card (where possible) using Apps2SD. I'm sure I could get rid of alot of the older I apps I don't use as much
As mentioned above, I wouldn't worry too much about the crack. It does not affect phone's performance and most people will not notice it unless you point it out to them.
I was thinking of sending mine in for repair, but last night when I got home opened car door and my Arc fell out of my pocket on concrete floor. It bounced a couple of times so I feared the worst. After close inspection, there are 2 small scuff marks on side and that's all, no damage to screen nothing.....thankfully, maybe I got lucky, but will no longer be sending it in for repair as SE will say it was caused by dropping it.
Yep second mic is used for clever phasing to cancel out the external noise.
thanks guys...yesterday I updated via SEUS in order to root and hopefully update to 2.3.4 however I am still on 2.3.3 with firmware version 4.0.A.2.368...in SEUS it said that the home screen will now support landscape mode but ive not seen much difference.

I remember reading this in an old firmware update changelog. It seems SE actually meant that there was landscape home screen support when screen mirroring via HDMI (ie. when you hook up your arc to a monitor/TV, you can see the phone on the monitor/TV in landscape). on the phone however, the home screen is always in portrait
im sorry to keep bugging everybody with question after question but i wanted to know how much space do apps take on sd card? for example if an app on internal memory takes 1mb will it be the same on the sd card? Im just wondering because even though my sd card shows hidden files, both on Astro and Windows i can never see the app files.
thanks you everybody for your cooperation
Pretty much the same space, yeah - they still take up a small amount of memory on the handset (a couple of KB or so) but basically it's all just shoved onto the card instead.
Hey all:
I have been traveling on business all week, and was just wondering if there was new news about GB being in the playbook this week? I have a feeling if it were, it would be top of the forum, but just in case it is in a "unobvious" thread, I thought I would ask.
Here is my next question. My Samsung Epic is completely stock, except for being rooted. I have noticed it is really slow when switching to the home screen, and switching to and from apps. It is ESPECIALLY slow when bringing up the TwLauncher sometimes. I have tried clearing data on the TwLauncher to see if there was corruption, but same thing. I have about 110 apps installed on my phone, and all of the apps that can be moved to the SD card are already there.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No, and what is the question on the second one?
No news on GB.
Other question....your homescreens are taking longer because it takes longer to access and find all the apps on your sd card. SD card access is slower so the more apps on it the more it will slow down. Clean some apps off your homescreen that are on the sd card that you don't use and see if that speeds it up a little.

ouch. I had a feeling this was the case. Let me ask this.
I have the stock SD card in my phone (class 4 I think). If I bought a class 10, is the phone capable of utilizing those faster speeds, and would I notice the difference?

1. No news
2. You are running out of memory.
No, I had a class 10 card (recently got corrupted and I changed back to the included Samsung sd card) and I still had this issue.
I've heard that the biggest reason we see this issue with the home screen is because the Epic uses the RTS (murderous) file system. As you are rooted, I believe you can search for the solution someone had that puts a 1GB swap space on the SD card that uses EXT4.
This is interesting.
I wonder if a Class 10 card would help if the swap file is on the SD. I almost wish I would have installed the stock ROM without the bloatware, as I think that would also help my situation, since my internal memory is down to around 60 megs...
hmmmmm.

I have 140 apps and 98% of those are on my SD card - the other 2% that "can" go on the SD card, I don't move because those apps are in folders on my home screens and if moved to the SD card, on next boot the icons change to a default Android icon instead of the normal app icon.
With that being said, I am stock and rooted like you except that I have a kernel so I can overclock my cpu. My phone is fast and stable in every way and so is my wife's epic which I have set up almost the same way - I have no problems with speed in switching or opening apps.
I would try overclocking but stay stock IMHO.

Can you point me to a good way to do this? Do you find that OC affects your battery life??? Mine is terrible.

I think you mean RFS. And yes, some people worship ext4.
But really op? 110 apps?! I have 25...

I dread doing this. I use two paid backup programs (Titanium and MyBackup).
Neither of them seem to backup the actual data that the applications use. What do I mean by that? I am talking about the saved login information for an app, as well as preferences, etc. It is never as easy as it should be.

I would only do the kernel and not a rom yet, baby steps! Read the OP at least 3 times so you can understand.
Make sure you make a nandroid before you try this, just in case somethings goes wrong. When overclocking, don't mess with undervolting until everything is stable, then baby steps.

I run exactly whats in my signature. I have duplicated the same setup on my wife's phone with the exception that I keep hers clocked no higher than 1.3ghz. Where I float back and forth between 1.3ghz and 1.4ghz, because I am testing battery life. I get as good or better on battery life and a snappier phone on 1.3ghz and a little less battery at 1.4ghz, but that is only when I play a game at 1.4ghz. Under normal daily usage, I would still have to give the edge in battery life to 1.3ghz, but 1.4ghz sure is fast!
I have the free version of Titanium Backup and my App Data restores perfectly.
I'm thinking same as one of the other posters, more than one instance of your apps are killing your ram, what I do is chop down on apps, and look at what apps are running under processes. Remember that out of those 110 apps you have installed, not every single one has optimized programming code, so in theory, half of those are making new bugs that your phone has to bitterly endure. For titanium backup I do batch restore apps+data. Maybe you're just not restoring right. There's so many options that I find it possible. Imo opinion, I don't reccommend OC if you want battery life and for your epic's overall life to end sooner. As for gingerbread news nothing new yet, but it'll come out when we least expect it, I'm sure.

I have MyBackup Pro and I don't even use that anymore, as I nandroid every 3 to 5 days or when I am going to do something drastic that could cause problems from the unknown. As an example my last unknown that was kind of glitchy was when I upgraded to Superuser went to 3.0
If you are rooted, just do a nandroid, if you have a crash, it will bring everything back just like it was when you made the nandroid.

And "that" is why I said to just flash a kernel first. I am almost sure he would go nuts, because he has to flash SRF 1.1 first then SFR 1.2, then a kernel and make sure he has been converted to ext4 from rfs, than probably have journaling on, and the list goes on.
Go kernel first! And if that works and is stable and your phone works perfect after a week of use, then you can go on to the next step!

That is awesome advice. That is what I did back in November. Genocide was the first thing I flashed after rooting to change my bootanimation.
Its due to apps on sd card having a shortcut on a home screen or on a folder on a home screen. I don't think file system, kernel, or ROM will improve that very much. I would hate for you to go to all the work to find no improvement.
The cache and speed tweaks could help and a faster card could help. You might also give a new launcher a try. In the end, I decided to just keep apps on internal memory that I needed on home screen. Same as the 98% - 2% guy above.
