My MyTouch 4G is running Android 2.2.1, can I upgrade it to the latest version of Android?
How?
Easy go to cyanogenmod.com and search for your phone then go to wiki and find the guide to root first and then install gingerbread....
HTC has not released an official OS upgrade for the MyTouch 4G yet, you're stuck with Froyo (android 2.2.x) for now.
If you don't want to wait for HTC's release, you can root the phone, turn S-OFF in your bootloader, and flash a clockworkmod recovery image. Then you can flash custom ROMs made by developers outside of Google/mobile carriers/handset manufacturers. Many of them are based on Gingerbread (android 2.3.x) source code. All that stuff can be found in the Development subforum for this device. I recommend you READ ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING before you attempt anything.

This may be a dumb question but here I go.
So I heard that android 2.2 is coming out and I was wondering if there was anyway to revert my mytouch 3g back to its original state if I wanted to? (de-root) lol
Or should I wait for developers to make new custom roms with 2.2?
But I am still curious if it possible to reverse a rooted phone?
1) 2.2 is not out yet.
B) there's a big honkin' 2.2 thread already
3) there's also a "how to root/unroot your mt3g" thread over in developement.
1) 2.2 source is released now
Proper 2.2 running on our devices is a long shot. But hope for the best
Cyanogen is already working om CM6 which is Froyo based and he said that amongst its targets is the Dream, the Magic/Sapphire/Mytouch 3g and Mytouch 3g Slide
Hello there.
I'm currently having a rooted HTC Hero with the 1.5 ROM. I would like to upgrade it to the latest version for the Hero. The phone says I have one new system upgrade but I'm unable to complete the upgrade because I have a rooted phone.
So is there any XDA-guide to follow for upgrading a rooted device?
Best Regards
SH

there isn't an official upgrade to 2.2.
you could install a custom froyo rom (such as froyd villain) or upgrade to a more stable rom (such as chocolate eclair or vanilla eclair)

You're right. The official is 2.1 but how do I upgrade to that version with a hacked device?
See http://villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=375 for a guide. As you are rooted, just follow the how to flash instructions.
Instead of using the rom it mentions, which is old, flash the zip for froydvillain or whatever you want using patched recovery
Dear All Experts,
I'm a newbie for Android and do have some questions to ask you guys. I have a rooted MT4G.
Dump question (possibly)
Do custom Roms come equipped with latest device software update ( Froyo and soon to be Gingerbread ) or I would have manually update my device software again once Gingerbread is out before I could flash new custom Roms again?
Flashable roms include all the software you will need. If/when gingerbread rom comes out - all you will need to do is wipe and flash.
Your apps are updated through market, rom has nothing to do with it.
Thank you very much for your comment.
Hi there!
For the mytouch 4G phone from t-mobile, it doesn't come with vanilla android (the stock android O.S).
So, once rooted, is it possible to flash it with the Stock Android 2.2 O.S? That does not have T-mobile's junk? If so, where or how can I find it?
I came upon several links, but wasn't certain. Also, what does it mean by RUU rom?
thanks!
I have no idea what RUU to be honest, never used one but I think it's the factory image that's used to bring phone back to stock, not sure if there's one for MT4G
There's no official vanilla 2.2 rom for this phone. The closest thing you can have is CyanogenMod. 2.2.1 is in RC2 stage and is very stable. 2.3 (gingerbread) is in unofficial alpha stage. It's very stable (as far as people say) but has it's bugs and there no official support from CM for it, only community. All other roms out there are sense based. All roms are in Development section.
Obviously, you need to be rooted to flash any of those.
Good luck.
RUU = ROM Upgrade Utility. It is essentially the rom that ships with the phone. You are correct in saying there is no true vanilla Android ROM. OP's best bet is to go with CM as you suggested as it is Vanilla Android with some features added and closest to pure android you're going to get.
I was wondering if someone could goto the effort to clearly outline the steps how to root my android 2.2 streak and install the streakdroid 1.6 custom rom on it.
My problem when reading the guides is a run ubuntu and there hasnt really been a clear guide for ubuntu yet.
Been wanting to install a streakdroid custom rom for ages now as the performance on the official one just is not up to scratch
thanks guys
