[Q] FROYO and Custom ROMS - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear All Experts,
I'm a newbie for Android and do have some questions to ask you guys. I have a rooted MT4G.
Dump question (possibly)
Do custom Roms come equipped with latest device software update ( Froyo and soon to be Gingerbread ) or I would have manually update my device software again once Gingerbread is out before I could flash new custom Roms again?

Flashable roms include all the software you will need. If/when gingerbread rom comes out - all you will need to do is wipe and flash.
Your apps are updated through market, rom has nothing to do with it.

Thank you very much for your comment.

A few questions about Custom ROM's

I'm a noob and I have a few questions about Custom Rom's. First, what is Cyanogen? Is it a standalone Rom or is it a platform for Custom Rom's to run on? I have an X8 and I have Link2SD, if I flash the CM7 ROM in this forum will the apps in the EXT2 partition disappear? Also, I live in China at the moment and I flashed the operating system to an American Version... Which Rom will work better for me in China, the Cyanogen or the one ported from Sense? I bought my X8 in China. Thanks for the help~ oh and one last question, will SE really stop upgrading the X8 or is it just for the moment?
Sent from my X8 using XDA App
CyanogenMod is a popular custom Android ROM. It includes features that aren't normally built into Android.
The apps on the EXT2 partition will not disappear, however they will not appear in your app drawer. You'll have to re-install them/re-link them.
It does not matter where you bought the phone, the ROM will work exactly the same. The ported Sense ROMs are not completed and barely work.
SE has only stopped upgrading the X8's Android version (so we will never see an official 2.2 or 2.3 firmware). We will still see future 2.1 updates.
Edit: Also, this was posted in the wrong section.

[Q] Beginner questions about custom roms

Hi all,
I'm very new in the Android world, so please reply as if i'm a complete bastard
I've got a Galaxy Apollo (i5800), without simlock, running Android 2.1 from Samsung (original rom).
Now I read many thing about roms, jpm, jpf, jpg, jpw, jpz, jpb, etcetera etcetera. Now I really don't know what these terms mean.
The only thing I know, is that I would like to try a good custom rom, with easy installation. Do you guys know about a very user/beginner friendly rom?
And also, do I have to root my phone before I'm able to install a custom rom?
Sorry for my bad english and poor knowledge.
Thanks in advance for your reply

Hello, welcome to the android world!
jpm, jpm, etc are firmware builds of android 2.2 (froyo)
All custom roms have easy installation (with odin).
You dont have to root your phone before installing a rom!
Kyrillos
Check out the Flashing Guide and Videos on Youtube. ..try InDroid Rom or Kyrillo or Lestat Rom..all are good...

What do you guys think about this rom? youtube.com/watch?v=NY1cySzOh0U
This rom is based on XXJPM.
Will it work on my i5800, currently firmware version: PDA:JG6 / PHONE:JG3 / CSC:JH2 (BSE), language: Dutch?
Will it be buggy, laggy? Will Samsung Kies still be able to detect my phone after flashing this rom?
And, when I don't like this rom, how easy will it be to get the stock firmware on it?
Last, but not least: is this rom going to drain the battery life of my phone?
Many thanks for the replies

Take a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=986831
You can't update with kies if you have a custom rom. you have to flash back
Thanks for the replies! I'm currently running Indroid 3.0, and it's working perfect!
It was very easy to install the custom rom, which I didn't expect.

Hy, i have also a question:
- If i flash with a custom rom/kernel can i then install official rom from Kies? Or it's irreversible?
Kies only works with official roms as far as I know...
If you flash a custom rom with odin, kies doesn't recognize the phone (and you can not install official rom from kies).
You can however flash an official rom with odin (rom from samfirmware).
- With the official rom kies also works again.
Thanks, i will be watting for the official rom for the 5801 and then i will install custom rom depending on the users feedback.

[Q] Returning to Gingerbread

Hello,
You'll have to excuse my relative anonymity with regards to Android. I've always been a BlackBerry user and I've recently switched to a Note and couldn't be happier, but I know little about ROM's, development and so on.
I've rooted my Note and loaded a Custom ROM - imilka's CyanogenMod9, which has been working fantastically. However, I do miss some of the stock TouchWiz applications like S Memo and S Planner. Also, I'd like to return to Gingerbread and simply wait for the official ICS update from Samsung. Custom ROM's are nice and efficient, but for daily use I'm starting to think a stock ROM might be better for me.
My question is, how can I return to the latest stock ROM of the Note, without losing root or bricking my phone?
Thanks in advance, and I apologize if this has been covered someplace else but I couldn't find it.

Installing Roms on 4.1.2

Will all of the custom ROMs in this forum work with the new OTA update? Or will we need to wait for the ROMs to be updated for 4.1.2 before flashing?

my understanding is that the custom ROMs would be replacements - not necessarily additions to a certain ROM. that being said, I think there is a new kernel update (reason for the improved WiFi connectivity), so there could be problems if you flash an older custom ROM over the new update.
I'm hoping that some of the developers will be issuing an update to their ROMs - but we'll just have to wait and see. I'm in no rush though, no sense in turning a gourmet chef into a short order cook.

Just got ZE552KL, few questions..

I've asked a couple of questions in various threads but haven't received answers, so I'll try again in a dedicated thread.
1. I want to unlock bootloader, root, and install a custom ROM (Lineage). For the unlock step, is there any disadvantage to doing the official unlock if I don't need OTA update notifications for stock ROM?
2. Are Lineage and ViperOS the only custom ROMs available for this phone?
3. Are there any features in the stock ROM that I would lose going to a custom ROM because they require something inherent to ZenUI? I remember on my S4 some features would not work when I switched from Touchwiz rom to vanilla android.
Thanks
