I posted the same on the Captivate forum but would like some input from you guys...
My Captivate locked to Rogers and running Official 2.2 for his Desire Z Unlocked running Official 2.2
Both phones are like new and perfect, though mine comes with the original box.
I don't have a clue about the Desire Z, is it more powerful than the Captivate? How about the Slider mechanic...will it become loose?
Please share some insight on this, I really like the look of the Desire Z.
If a hardware keyboard doesn't greatly excite you, stick with your galaxy s. It's slightly more powerful and has a nicer screen. Desire z has a much higher build quality, but if you don't love it you'll probably regret it.

Cool thanks man. Like I said I just had no clue about the Desire Z. But after looking into HTC devices I think my next phone will have to be one, build quality seems to be unmatched.

I would do it in a heartbeat. My friend got his Galaxy S right around the same time I got my Desire Z. Comparing the two, the only thing I would say the Galaxy S has over the DZ is the screen.
DZ is made of metal/aluminum materials versus plastic with the Galaxy. The plastic makes it MUCH lighter but also makes it feel cheap.
As far as power, I would say that the DZ is as powerful, if not more powerful than the Galaxy. Running at stock 800mhz they are about the same. When I OC my phone to 1.2 or 1.5, it runs circles around his.
For me, the keyboard is a must have, and the DZ has one of the best keyboards I have ever used. The Z hinge that everyone complains about, allows for plenty of clearance between the top row of keys and the bottom of the screen, which has been a problem in the past with other slider style phones.
Just my 2 cents.

I know what you are saying but this is the Captivate Galaxy S, the back is Metal. The plastic backing is the other Galaxy S devices...
But yeah I like the design of the HTC, looks nice. I will have to think about this a bit.
Does the Desire Z have Gorilla Glass like the Captivate?
well hold the phone man the fact that the desire z in unlocked is a plus, if your interested in the value of the phone, keep that in mind
yeah I would do it without hesitation. The Desire Z gets better dev support, better manufacturer support, better looks, dedicated camera button and hardware keyboard, it's just an all-around better device.
Buddy the g2 is much better device both hardware and software wise. For anyone saying you should get the captivate please explain to me why? The phone has an outdated slower processor, horrible build quality and its samsung...the worst customer support phone company besides motorola. Seriously the g2 is an amazing device why would you want to go backwards?

Geez guys, I know we all love our G2s but I disagree. Don't get me wrong, I chose the g2 over the vibrant and don't regret it for a second. I'm going under the assumption that he loves his captivate and was just intrigued by the desire z.
This is all a matter of personal preference. I personally like the htc made sexiness that is the g2, but going on guts alone I think galaxy s still holds slight advantage. Slight. And its samoled screen.
I concur on the avoid samsung rhetoric, just make sure you buy htc next time lol.

had an epic 4g.. keyword had. my g2 is much nicer, is faster, has little things like.. an led notification (the epic has this but the captivate doesnt), better support.
to this day i still have yet to see a shred of evidence that the galaxy s lineup has gorilla glass... but if you are asking if its as scratch resisent then yes indeed it is
So I ended up keeping the Captivate. I think looking at the 2 in a store brand new, I would go for a Desire Z but the phone was still technically used and I have no idea about the history behind the phone.
I do like the Captivate, but the Desire Z just looks so much better. The only thing I was conserned with was the Sliding mechanic...oh well.
I will buy a HTC next time I get a phone though, the build quality looks amazing and HTC looks like they actually support the device lol
I wish the Desire Z would have been new in box...instant trade. Damn it...now I can't stop thing about this damn phone! Again I just don't know is anything was wrong with it, could have been dropped...or repaired by a 3rd party...who knows.
And I BABY my phones, so knowing mine has always been in a case unless in use I simply could not trade : (
Thanks anyways guys...
Respectable choice op. Believe me the g2 is a wondeful device. I agree with you that buying anything used is always a risk. Although the g2 has great build quality, your right in that you don't know what the original owner might have done to his phone. Have fun with your next htc purchase though. Believe me you won't be dissappointed!

I've got my G2 and my wife's Vibrant *Same Galaxy S* that I always work with and overall I way prefer my G2... except the Vibrant's screen lol
The G2 feels like a BMW where as the Vibrant feel's like a Hundai
The Vibrant is pretty good with the Voodoo Lag Fix, made it a good bit snappier, but my G2 seems to handle things a little better overall.
The G2 is a lot better on benchmark results, but the Vibrant is a GPU monster. Here is a video I took the other night of comparing the Nenamark scores

That matchup in the link is not really fair. As much as I love my G2 it would get destroyed in a matchup against a SGS phone with similar roms, say both on Froyo. Just look at the Nexus S its scoring 3500+ in quadrant at 1.4ghz with gingerbread, our G2 with say CM7 is scoring just 2500ish at 1.5ghz. The PowerVR sgx540 is just a beast. I don't think the adreno 220 is gonna be better than the next gen sgs gpu unfortunately.

I know i am a little late here since you made the choice already for now.. but maybe keep this in mind for the future...
I have an sgs Vibrant and my wife has a G2. I have both of them modded with the newest roms and mods.. Even though the g2 puts up a bit higher benchmarks the Vibrant (sgs) defiantly out preforms it. When playing games or even browsing the web with flash enabled, the vibrant seems much smoother... However this could simply come down to preference.. since the 2 phones are in-fact very similar in specs, but the hummingbird in the sgs is a better model in my eyes..
As far as the build quality goes to be honest just because it is made from plastic and much liter doesn't mean it is of lesser quality.... In-fact it feels much more solid than the G2 if you ignore the weight difference, not to mention the G2 feels heavy in my pocket now. i could never go to such a heavy phone ever again..
Lots of people have this crazy thought that Samsung doest support their devices but HTC as well as Motorola have just as many devices that have been left behind (not just with android) or taken a while to update (longer than it took for the sgs line to start getting updates)... The vibrant now has an official update to 2.2 and the time it took was about the norm as far as updates go from release date.. 5 or 6 months only not really that bad..
I did a quadrant advanced benchmark on the Vibrant and I've apparently gotten it to the top of the list too... I'm amazed how large the IO is on it. But processor was a very small part of the bar lol
What do you guys think? The difference in price is $100 between the two I just got to make a decision thanks guys
The biggest deciding factor is the hardware keyboard. Can you live without it? If I were in your situation, I would go for the DZ. Not because I have it now, but because hardware keyboards kick the snot out of virtual keyboards. I've typed on the Moto Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, BB Storm, HTC Hero, iPhone3GS and iPhone4 and NONE of their keyboards (all virtual) can compare to the accuracy of the DZ's hardware layout. Just my 0.02.
Incredible s is much better in specs and design. If you really need a qwerty keyboard then get desire z but i really think the incredible s is much better.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
My neighbor has an incredible S that I've spent quite a lot of time with since he was new to smartphones and needed a little help setting some things up. I will say that I think the screen on the incredible s is gorgeous. Deep blacks, and great color and brightness. That being said performance within android is almost identical between his incredible 2 and my g2...
I'd say if i had to pick one i'd still keep my G2 because I love the keyboard. The incredible's screen is definitely better but not by a large enough margin to negate the keyboard. Even quadrant standard scores aren't too far off between the two when they're each stock and with the OC provided by g-lite my G2 scores are actually better.
I think both are great but I'd still take the G2...
I have my Desire Z since February and I'm totally addiced to it, nothing in the Smartphone world can beat a hardware keyboard.
I switched from Motorolad Driod to Desire Z and next phone would be Android with Hardware Keyboard for sure
Incredible is also a nice phone but a totally different and for a other type of user.
If u don't text a lot = Incredible / Sensation
If u send a lot of SMS/Mails/Chat = hardware keyboard for sure
Hi all, I'm not new in the android world.
I had a t-mobile htc g1 that now is borken, I don't know if I should buy now an htc desire z for 220€ or if I should wait some time.
I know that android ice-cream will be available in october-november, so I'm afraid that the old terminal will be devalued, and I'm afraid about the compatibilities of android 4.0 with the htc desire Z.
The desire Z is beautiful, but the specifications are not excellent for the standard of this days (no dual core, "only" 512mb of ram, not really good camera).
I love olso myTouch4g slide, cause it have the specifications of a new phone (dual core, 768mb of ram) and the keyboard.
The problem of MT4Gs is the keyboard, that is said is not good.. droid 3 have the problem of the ram (only 512 for a dual core), of the software (motorblur..) and the screen that is a simple LCD (the minor problem).
So my question is:
1) Wait for new devices after the launching of android 4.0 or bu now a device?
2) Desire z will be updated to android 4.0?
3) If I decide to buy now a device, what to buy?? (Desire z vs mytouch4g slide vs droid3)
(I'm Italian, but I can buy droid3/MT4GS from the USA on ebay and use in europe)
Thanks

1) well youu can get some of the newer devices now because they will probably be upgradable to ics
2) most likley not. But the community will port it anyways and you will soon find tons of roms wjith ics as the base
3) i would say droid 3 is the best. it has pretty good specs and its design looks good. The mt4g looks real bad. If you dont **** motoblur, then you can just flash another rom. Also it only has 512mb of ram because the motoblur skin is pretty lightweight.

I hope that ics will not need of more ram and CPU/GPU to run smoothly... :\
The problem of droid 3 is the ram. The only better thing of droid 3 is the CPU dual core.. it really feels the need of a dual core??
The desireZ keyboard is perfect, droid 3 is perfect too but in another way.
Droid 3 screen is bigger and have more resolution, but is tft..
So droid 3 has better processor, screen (but tft) and camera but no sense (before a good port of sense we have to wait a lot I think)
MT4Gs has better processor, perfect camera(!!), more ram, but worse qwerty.. that is important for a qwerty device. (and yes, is ugly... it seems a toy )
And desire Z is cheaper 220€ is good for a new desire z, I think.
I'm afraid about possible desire z successor with the coming of android Ics, (new htc device with qwerty + dual core + 1gb ram) but in the last years HTC seems slow to release devices with slide qwerty for the global market (I remember only dream/g1, desireZ/g2, and the USA myTouch xG Slide ).
If I buy desire Z and after 1 or 2 month HTC release a new qwerty device, I'll hate HTC for ever
I would think you could get one cheaper than that

Less than 200€ is hard to find here
180€ would be perfect, but 10 month ago it was 550€..
myTouch 4G Slide is a great device (and I don't just say that because I own it!).
The keyboard is better than the G2/Desire-Z's, at least for me. The keys are just a little bit smaller, but farther apart and I can type way faster/more accurately than on the G2. I always hit too many keys at once on the G2/Desire-Z.
And the hardware Android keys on the MT4GSlide are great!
Good morning,
I'm looking for a mobile-phone with a physical QWERTY keyboard; running the android operating system.
So far I've found the HTC Desire Z (Vodafone/3), Samsung Galaxy 551 (Telstra) and the Motorola Milestone 2.
Which should I get? – Alternatively, can you recommend a different one I can buy from a shop in the city tomorrow?
Thanks for all suggestions,
Alec Taylor
If you haven't already, try these phones out in person before you pick. In particular, the Milestone 2 (Droid 2 in the US) feels really cheap and plasticky, and with a clunky keyboard, compared to the Desire Z. I'm not too familiar with the keyboard variant of the Galaxy S (although on carrier in the US has it, but not mine). But while the Galaxy S phones have very nice displays, their housing seem cheaper and lower quality than the Desire Z.
Without any doubts, the Desire Z / G2.
Best hardware, screen, keyboard, and it's very unlockable, you can use whatever rom you like, and do everything with your phone.
I know all of the devices and have a G2, and love it.
Though, i put in my mind that i want a 2d cellphone....
Thanks, I'm taking a look at the specs now...
=Samsung Galaxy 551=
Processor: 600Mhz
Camera quality: 3MP
Weight: 156g
Dimensions: 111.0 x 55.0 x 16.3mm
=HTC Desire Z=
Processor: 800Mhz
Camera quality: 5MP
Weight: 180g
Dimensions: 119mm x 60.4mm x 14.16mm
=Motorola Milestone 2=
Processor: 1Ghz
Camera quality: 5MP
Weight: 169g
Dimensions: 19mm x 60.4mm x 14.16mm
But you're saying the Desire Z will last longer because it's better built?
I remember trying the keyboard in a shop once, wasn't too impressed... (compared with my TouchPro2)
The SOC in Desire Z has a newer technology or something like this, that even with a lower processor speed it's better.
Another thing, is that Motorola roms are buggy, and the Milestone 2 is trapped in Froyo, and the DZ has Ginger 2.3.4. The T-Mobile G2 has a cleaner rom than the DZ, which is the one i have, and used root to remove a few apps that i don't have use in my country.
And as Desire Z is a Htc, it has a much better community, and no locks, or so easy to beat. You can root easily, and put the rom you want because of almost "no locks".
I had a Touch Pro2 before this G2, and the performance is so much better, far better than the TP2, and the keyboard is better too.
If your a geek and want sim unlock, root, any custom rom u want, engineering hboot, etc. Than the g2/dz is your only choice. Plus its got gorilla glass

He right. I did quite a bit of research b4 buying an Android phone. I came from the Motorola Cliq and man was it a good phone but the OEM restrictions was killing me. HTC Devices are notoriously open/rootable. Dont let the 800 MHz fool ya. It clocks the same speed as the 1GHz single-core processors, just uses less power while doing it. Funny enough it was manufacture designed to run at 1GHz anyways, they just underclocked it in default roms for battery life. Most of us rooted run it at around 1.0 to 1.2 anyways.
Like others mentioned, I liked the Samsung Galaxy S keyboard variation (Sprints Epic 4g). Screen is VERY GOOD looking but its stuck in android 2.2 still. Plus it feels cheap outside that screen clarity. Like same plastic U would fine in the play phones of the Toy/Baby section in a store. Moto infamous for leaving devices without updates. While Samsung well known for intentionally holding updates behind to push there new product instead.
Most important is S-Off so easy wit this phone, its ridiculous.
Look at the Development page and ull notice all the Roms are cutting edge and completely stable for this phone. Most officially supported, lol.
CyanogenMod 7.1
Muiu
Pure AOSP
Sense 3.5
TMobile Rom, just optimized and Prerooted.
Cant really ask for more.
also, the Galaxy 551 has a tiny 240x400 screen, are you cool with that?
I would go for the Desire-Z over ANY phone
Thanks
Due to your advice and others (as well as the Milestone 2 not being available in any Optus store) I have gone with the HTC Desire Z from Vodafone.
Another reason I went with the HTC is that the software seems to be much much better than anything the Milestone 2 could've provided, as well as being easily ROMable.
If u cld live without a keyboard htc amaze is the best but i say dz

Desire Z will probably last longer, and it just feels better, with the aluminum and soft touch plastic body. Obviously much better build quality. If a phone feels cheap and crappy, its probably because it IS cheap and crappy. And that is how the Milestone2 feels.
Agree that the keyboard on the Desire Z is a bit of a step backward compared to the TP2, in terms of key spacing, key travel/action, and missing the top row of keys. But it still feels much better than the Milestone2. The Moto keyboards just feel cheap and inferior.

Every keyboard on every other cell phone since the TP2 is a step backward from the TP2!!
Don't pick Milestone, it's too big in hand and makes uncomfortable.
Samsung phone with a keyboard is not as good as HTC series, especially this Desire Z is one of the best in rare HTC phones with keyboard. And Desire looks super!
So my suggestion is to Desire Z
Thanks all, I had purchased the Desire Z on Saturday.
Glad to hear it still rates #1 :]
You can tell by my username what I think, lol.
HTC Vision(G2), meXdroidmod Ghost Chili AIO.
Congratulations!
You are gonna love this
the ONLY thing i wish my [email protected] had was a front facing camera. But I'll live. if you can live w/o it too then get the G2.
Milestone 2 : not very popular, hard to find parts and good roms.
Samsung : slow and low resolution.
G2: still a fast and good phone on the actual market. Overclock up to 2.0 ghz or 1.5 ghz stable.
What about GPU? Maybe take a look on wikipedia. If I remember, G2 has Adreno 205, witch is not that bad for the year.
Due for an upgrade - been holding out for the HTC Desire Z as I love my keyboard, but have been offered the HTC Desire S.
I want some feedback in helping me decide...
Do you have a Desire Z? Is it aw awesome as it looks?
If you had the same choice, which would you choose?
Right now, neither.
i am using the desire z as my main phone now and it is a very good phone. the hardware keyboard is working fine and the hinge problem isn't such a problem as everybody says.
But...
if i would buy a new phone now it wouldn't be a desire z or a desire s. i would go for a phone with more power like the SG II. Don't get me wrong, the desire z is a awesome phone, but it lacks at raw power nowadays.
hope it helped
dz is kinda dying... people (talking about me) buy dz and overclock it, becausse its getting kinda slow (relatively to other phones)
—————————————————
I'm a 9gagger, if you are one... pm me
Get something with at least 1.5ghz+ to see something with moderate improvement over the DZ/DS. The era of ~1GHz phones is going to get phased out eventually when the devs are moving on to what is hot.
In Jan 2012 right now, that'd be the HTC/Tmobile Amaze, SGS2, Or the Optimus 4G, but dev support for that is limited.
I wouldn't pick either Desire Z or Desire S unless I knew I was going to get a good resale value. They're both pretty much the same hardware-wise.
Thanks
Thanks guys, but now I am confused.
I need a phone with a qwerty keyboard - are there any other, better, alternatives?
It is all subjective by what you mean is 'better'.
Yeah, there are a few out there:
- Motorola Milesone/Droid 4 : Dual 1.2Ghz, PowerVR SGX540, 1GB RAM
- HTC/Tmobile MyTouch 4g Slide: Dual 1.2Ghz, Adreno 220, 768MB RAM
- Samsung Captivate Glide: Dual 1.0Ghz, Tegra 2, 1GB RAM
Are they better than a Desire Z speedwise? Marginally, I don't think most of us will notice the mhz difference especially if we overclock the DesireZ which most roms do to ~1.0Ghz.
If you need more RAM for what you're doing, then it's definitely better. However if you ask which is better development wise? It's just left to the Desire Z and Mytouch4G now.

It depends on what you want to use it for.
If it just making phones calls, listening to music, writing e-mail and playing games then the Desire Z will be good enough for you (or alternatively Motorola Milestone 2).
Getting a dual core phone is not essential if you just want to do the above. On this forum, we like our specs. So in our eyes the better the specs, the more impress we are. But if you just want something practical and functional, then the Desire Z will be good enough for you.
As a Desire Z user, I'm happy with my phone and there isn't a phone out there at this point of time that is a worthy successor to it.

I agree with the previous poster... I've been using the G2/DZ for a year now and it still runs brilliantly (in part due to the fantastic ROM I'm running, ILWT CM7). I actually just bought the HTC Sensation for a family member. I rooted it and flashed a custom ROM... so I've spent some time with it, and I can say that despite the Sensation's Dual Core 1.2GHz processor, my G2 seemingly runs just as fast and smoothly (my G2 is overclocked just a bit at 1.1GHz). This is to say that I would still recommend this device to someone who was interested in a hard keyboard. It's been the most dependable phone I've owned to date.
I agree with others, had the desire, the desire hd and now i got the z with the weakest cpu. But if you're writing a lot it's very nice, i can write nearly bling with the keyboard meanwhile. I'm using ilwt-rom and it's much faster than the desire hd with sense. But if u got the decision, i'd advice you the galaxy s2 or the galaxy s plus because of amoled and the better batteryperformance. Bought a mugenakku for 30€/45$ and i'm very happy with my phone now. I think i'm gonna use until it won't work anymore. For the dailystuff eg youtube/sms/whatsapp and other stuff it's enough and very fast in my opinion. If you would like to play with your phone you should take the galaxy s2.
All in all it's the perfect phone to me

The Desire Z is a great phone! I've had mine about a year and while I was tempted inially when the Sensation came out, the lack of a hw keyboard made me think twice.
DZ has a few limitations, though. It has no front camera, which is not a deal breaker for me but would have been nice.
It has 512 MB RAM. If you're planning to root it and run a custom ROM based on Sense 3.0/3.5 I would recommend another phone with at least 768 MB RAM.
Sense is just too memory-heavy for DZ to run it smoothly and fast. Eventually you will have apps that you want to keep running falling out of memory, maybe soft reboots and hang ups all around.
It does run AOSP based ROMs perfectly well, be it CM, MIUI or other.
I love my DZ and will probably keep it at least until fall running some ICS ROM.
If hw keyboard is important to you it's a no-brainer.
The Desire Z is a great QWERTY entry level phone even if it has old specs. I still have it since it came out. It has great support from the Dev community as well
