[Q] How to know why install failed? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi guys! sometimes you try to install an APK file and the only message you see is "INSTALL FAILED" or "INSTALL UNSUCESSFULL" but there is no explanation of why. There is any way to see why it don't install on a particular rom and work on others?

I suppose you could use logcat (you're gonna need the Android SDK installed on your computer first), a lot of the time a reboot fixes the install problem - unless you're out of memory to store the application on.

i Got the sdk, but dont know how to user logcat to monitor installations. : /

Installing 3rd Party Apps

Here is how to install 3rd party applications. I'm not going to go into detail for every step so a little more research may be required if you don't understand all the terms. Search around, it's how I learned.
1. Download and extract the Android SDK. Once it is extracted copy it to the root of your C drive and to make your life easier rename it to sdk. So in the end it should be C:\sdk.
2. Download and install HTC Sync.
3. After the install of HTC Sync is complete connect your phone to the computer and select the HTC Sync option for the connection type on your phone. It doesn't matter if it fails to connect or gives you any error. When I did it the phone told me it couldn't find HTC Sync on my PC but I just hit OK and moved on.
5. Copy whatever 3rd party apps you are looking to install to the tools folder. (C:\sdk\tools). DO NOT rename the files, I had problems after doing that.
6. Open up a command prompt on your PC (In windows it's start, run, cmd) and change to the tools directory.
cd\
cd sdk\tools
After you change to that directory the prompt should say: c:\sdk\tools.
7. Type adb devices to verify that your computer can see the phone. If everything is working you should get a response that looks something like this:
List of devices attached
HTxxxxxxxxx device
8. Once you verify that the computer and phone are connected type the following:
adb install nameofapp.apk (obviously changing the nameofapp part to whatever the file is named).
You should see it copy the app then install and at the end it will say successful. All done!
Feel free to add to this if I missed anything....
KB
Thanks KB for the update, an easy workaround that I don't mind performing at all. Now if only we can remove those pesky AT&T bloatware they slapped on it, and get a nice Root going, we'll be in business!
Heck, I'd be willing to buy an extra Aria for someone around here if they could get a quick root/2.2 update going for this thing.

Step 6 may seem a little unwieldy, but here is a trick I learned.
1) Create a shortcut for CMD.exe on your desktop.
2) Right click the CMD.exe shortcut and go to Properties.
3) In the Start in: bar, type in the directory for the android SDK tools folder you put on your computer. For example, my start in address is:
Code:
"I:\HTC Hero\android-sdk-windows\tools"
Now everytime you open this CMD.exe shortcut, it will start in the correct folder to perform adb commands.
As far as Swype goes, you can get an e-mail for the installer through here.
I did run into a problem, since Swype will not install correctly because it needs to download and apply another .apk, which AT&T's blocks will not allow. Swype really isn't important enough to me to get it otherwise, as I'm happy installing the other apps I've been missing out on.
Hope that helps!

I'm sorry I can't be more technical, but I use an easier way to install 3rd party apps, even multiple installs at once. Everything above is the same except AFTER step 3.. go to http://de.codeplex.com/ and download droidexplorer, once you have it, connect your phone to the pc, execute droidexplorer (droid explorer can take up to 2 mins (or maybe longer) to load so be patient), select drop down menu tools either addons (-batch install) to install multiple apps.. or Manage Packages to install single app. There are lots of other functions using droidexplorer but I think most of them need the device to be root.
(it's been a while since I first installed droidexplorer, so I'm not 100% certain if I even needed the android sdk, but HTC SYNC is definitely needed, if someone wants to give it a shot without installing android sdk to verify, that would be great, let me know and I'll fix up this post.)
THIS HAS BEEN VERIFIED TO WORK ON THE STOCK ATT ARIA by myself, as I just purchased the aria on sunday and already installed over 30 apps.
hope this helps someone.. post any replies if you need help, I'll try to help in any way I can.
thanks for the instructions KB. Getting my aria soon and can't wait to ditch the iPhone
Anyone know if/how you can delete the built in AT&T apps?

I'd suspect you would need root access and then you could simply use shell rm /system/app/attbull****.apk
Yup....Same thing I did with my Incredible..
Ok, I got the Swype installer onto my phone, but then it stops me again. Thoughts?

To elaborate. did "install adb swype-installer.apk" Got the success message. Tried to run swype installer on my phone and it got blocked as a third party app.
So, you can just use the Incredible root and it'll work for the Aria?

No no, he was saying he was able to remove the Verizon bloatware from his Incredible after rooting the phone. DO NOT use the Incredible method for rooting on your Aria, as you will possibly brick your phone.

Are you sure you have the right apk? If you got success it should already be installed. Check it by going to settings then language and keyboard. You should see Swype as an option.

yep did "adb install swype-installer.apk" Got the "success" - nothing there. The swype installer is now on my phone. Click on it, log in to it, click download - third party deny message.
Also there's no swype on my phone in the downloads, only the swype installer. I figured I might have to do the same thing for the swype installer and swype, but the file isn't there. What exactly does running "install swype-installer.apk" accomplish? I figured it would allow me to download the actual Swype program, and not just the installer.
Tried again in CMD "Install_failed_already_exists"

I tried this too. Apparently Swype-installer.apk is an Android program for you to download and install the REAL Swype software. I was able to install the swype-installer but the next step fail since it's trying to install Swype directly. Does any have the actual swype apk file? Do you know where I can find it?

[Q] [Question] Install Apps and Recovery mode

Hi!
I just passed to an android nand rom, before i had android from sd. It was very simple for me to install apps, i just passed the files .apk to the folder Android Apps in the folder of Android Sd and when i reeboted the phone the app was installed.
Now my question is, i have nand android and tried to place an .apk app in the root of the sd, reeboted, and nothing was installed.
I tried to search for an answer but nothing, can somebody please explain me how to install apps in this nand version?
And also.... how can i remove boot sound? i cannot enter in recovery mode... in the sd version i had the option to reebot in it by holding the power button (but really never worked), and now in nand version i have only the option to Reebot, Shutdown, or Put in silent mode.
Thanks!
Hmm..are you talking about installing typical apps or some special apps? cause for most of apps you can install them as simply as coping the .apk file to your SD or even download them directly from the web to your SD,then browse to where you copied/downloaded them using your file manager and simply click on the app to install it,or there is the hard way by using 'adb' and the command " install -s yourappname.apk".About that recovery issue, you can't access recovery mode from the power menu on HD2 android, however we do have a working recovery image in some other way,so you might wanna do some reading HERE first. Hope i helped or even understood you correctly,if you need more help just be more specific and i'll be glad to help you further.Cheers!

hummm..
hi, i'm really glad you answered and i thank you..
my problem now is.. i don't have a file manager because i cannot install this famous apps like i did in the past with sd version. Usually i placed the apk file in AndroidApps and the app whas installed in automatic when i reeboted. Now in this nand version i don't have this folder and in rom i don't have a file manager... (still i don't understand why android doesn't have one in stock like wm had).... and so i cannot install nothing... i neither cannot access to phone storage because if i select the option when i connect the phone to connect with Htc Sync the phone gets stuck searching for Htc Sync in my computer... I don't know which is the solution now and i don't understand why nobody in forum speaks about this problem i have.
Thanks!

It's not really a problem, dude. simply go to market and install ANY file manager you like then you would be able to do whatever you want,i would recommend 'esfile manager' it nice one and works almost with every build. You can also do it using 'adb' on your pc.
"(still i don't understand why android doesn't have one in stock like wm had)"<--That will always be a wonder to me,it seems kinds stupid not to add it,maybe they depend on you to access market and get one yourself.
thanks
ok, thankyou mate. in all cases i'll try to flash another rom with the ClockworkMod Recovery, i've seen the video and it seems a very good program, also because of the backup and restore option, i really like it.
Ight, just make sure you are downloading a rom with the '.zip' format for clockwork not any nand build, not all of them are packed into '.zip' at least not yet.Glad i could help.

last question
a last question, i've seen that if i pass from a daf rom to a zip rom it's better if i whipe the system before flashing, maybe not wiping can cause issues, you know how to?
thanks
Sure, after you install clockwork you will find an option inside it's sub menu 'called wipe...something something' don't really recall, but it's there you will find all the instructions for clockwork in the thread for it.

[Q] installing fixes

i just wonder how you install the fixes thats beeing released here.
e.g videofix for DHD NAND (the stream shutting of)
i downloaded the fix, but dont know what to do with it?
also the fasterg GPS (you select Europe istead of something else, or something)
where do you install these, and how?
be so kind and make a little step by step instruction.
have a nice day everyone
normally the instructions are in the thread, you either install it from CWM or there might be a batch file you need to run to push the files
first thing is to read the thread where you got the fixes from
done that... doesent tell
i now people like to be comfortable, but please... everyone does not know how to fix some stuffs. espec. if its your first time
As far as I remember, you install updates the same way you'd install full rom - copy zip file to SD, then CWM, Ad Recovery and Install Zip from File
yeah, but i dont have CWM - does that matter?
have DHD NAND magldr 1.12
Sorry, but I've used only CWM ROMs - have no idea how updates for DAF should be done
if you mean this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959927 then it says you need CWM installed to be able to update it
also the faster gps is CWM installation only

[solved] Unable to download anything from Marketplace using MIUI Rom

Hi,
I have downloaded the MIUI rom from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=969661
[Mar 11 ]HD2 MIUI 1.3.11 SD/MAGLDR ROM (Kernel-AmeriCanAndroid r3.01)
Now I am facing the following issues......
Setup
I am booting this ROM from SD; so when starting it's booting to Win6.5, and I have to launch it from Win6.5.
Issue 1
okay, in Android
- marketplace
- searched for Angry Bird
- hit download, and I can see that Android passed the download link to the "download manager", and download manager quickly remove it from the download - no error message
was wondering if I need to create a folder for them to put the file?
Is it possible to download the "Angry Bird" application on my computer, USB sync it to the phone, and run the application from the phone?
Issue 2
- i registered for beta version of swype
- i download swype, and tried to install it using it's installer
- swype is unable to let me generate a license for it;
===> do I need to set up permission for applications to access my SD storage?
Issue 3
I just discovered that this ROM has links to MIUI Market Place! very similiar to Android marketplace
and this time when I choose to download software from it, it says failed to download (in chinese); I can surf internet and receive emails from gmail though.
Has this got something to do with my cluster size? It's currently at 8kb
PS: I couldn't get any response/support from the development forum, so I guess someone could help me if I were post in the right forum?
I don't know about the market issues, but u can definitely download apps and games from the network ,go to options>application and mark unknown sources so u can install non market apps-games, enable mass storage in android, transfer the files to the sd,access it with astro(any file manager) or any other program u have and just press the file u want and it will ask u if u want to install it.
about the market issues maybe switch to another rom.
after download some apk and installing them into the mobile, and after a few restart/reboot, I can download from market place now.......

[Q] Changing Rom

Hello All
First i am very new to android platform.
yesterday i bought HTC Tattoo, and i found there is no market app in it, i contact htc and they said i have Middle eastern rom so thats why i dont hv market app, i tried to install market app but my phone does not allow me to do so, HTc said ii need UK version rom to install market app..
My android version is also old (1.67.xx), and i dont feel good using it. so i want to upgrade my android version.
i searched alot on forums regarding this, and found that i hv to root, flash my phone to do so,, even i found very material to do so, but still i am dumb enough and i am afarid to do so.
Can you please guide me as a beginner how can i install another version of android on my htc tattoo, plus recommend me (+download link) of any rom that would work very fine and fast with my phone and will allow me to use all the features of the phone...
I dont want to brick my phone, so please tell me an authentic and easy method to get it all done successfully..
Looking forward to hear from you soon.
First, you must have HTC Sync and enable USB debugging. Then flash recovery menu (Attached the script - extract it to system C, go to C:\rtattoo, run RecoveryTattoo.bat). Then copy ROM file and reboot to recovery menu (run C:\rtattoo\reboot2Recovery.bat). Wait 5 seconds and tap menu button, find and tap wipe data/factory reset and then wipe cache partition. After all, choose install zip from sdcard - choose zip from sdcard and tap yes at the question "confirm install?".
After all actions tap "reboot system now" and thats all
If you have any questions - feel free
